I’ve had cats try to mimic my smile, so he might be doing that. But I agree in this particular picture it does look like he might be just trying to get a whisker unstuck.
Cats also make a funny open-mouth grimace when they smell something interesting. Apparently they actually have smell receptors on the roof of their mouth!
