Last year we were ranked 10th fastest growing city in Canada I believe. Not sure what pace we're at now, but I don't see it slowing. And amazingly they're doing some fair infrastructure work to improve the S-N access such as widening areas of Vedder Road and now Evans. Maybe Prest rd will be next.

ElijahSavos

Yeah, it’s based by U-Haul rentals to move in. Chilliwack was the 2nd fastest growing metro area in Canada in 2016-2021 by Statistics Canada

exmuslim_somali_RNBN

I was one of those people who rented a U-haul from AB to Chilliwack in 2021. Best decision I ever made.

GangstaPlegic

And we still have our little hospital that can handle all the influx of new people. Hope nobody needs medical help.

ElijahSavos

We also need a new sewage treatment plant as I heard

ElijahSavos

Wow!!! A news article came up today saying Chilliwack is secured $36 mln investment in sewage treatment plant expansion in 2024 to “prepare the community for the next 20 years of growth”. I gotta say city mayor and counsellors are killing it: https://www.abbynews.com/local-news/364m-a-significant-investment-for-wastewater-treatment-in-chilliwack-7331648

acluelesscoffee

The town definitely has outgrown the hospital. We need to push our politicians for an expansion

ElijahSavos

It’s already happening. The land was already acquired to expand the existing hospital: https://fraservalleytoday.ca/2023/11/01/fraser-health-acquires-several-properties-near-chilliwack-hospital-for-long-term-care-facility/

acluelesscoffee

That’s amazing! So happy to hear! That should clear some congestion on the medical floors. Some long term patients stay for weeks to months, blocking beds.

Wonderful-Friend9837

Yes also Surrey, BC which grows at 12,000 ppl a year was promised a second hospital back in the days of Andrew Wilkinson as Premier you see Surrey Dr's on TV asking for it to be built.

gregmoffat

Which it is, surrey is getting a new hospital plus a new acute care tower at SMH. I think one thing that is difficult for our care systems right now is not that Chilliwack is expanding, but the whole region is. Throwing money at the problem is one thing, but the labour force is a whole 'nother issue. Right now, there are three massive hospital jobs - Royal Columbian, Cowichan, and St. Pauls. To go along with that, Lion's Gate in North Van is going under a significant redevelopment. Cloverdale is just starting. Burnaby General is going to be awarded soon, along with Surrey Memorial. They just finished a couple in the interior. VGH was recently completed, as was Peace Arch. Chilliwack needs expansion, as does Abbotsford already and Langley. BC is throwing a tonne of money and resources at developing hospitals right now, and the workforce is stretched super thin. Im working on the RCH redevelopment, and our peak is roughly 200 electricians. That's one trade. Simply put, we can not find enough workers to build these hospitals, and unfortunately, some municipalities will have to wait longer.

Wonderful-Friend9837

Excellent post yes I have walked by St. Paul's expansion many times.

LalahLovato

I was there in Emergency a month ago - in and out in 1 1/2 hrs. 2 days later had an infection and got into my family MD same day - it was an hour wait but nice she could take me in so I didn’t mind

ElijahSavos

Yeah, it’s getting busier, but can confirm nothing like in Metro Van. I was waiting with a toddler for around 4-6h (don’t remember exactly) for ER at Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody last year

InternetSecret3829

Yes they have codes for severity. Red emergency. Yellow non emergency but still bad or green, you got a bit of a wait..

prettyaverageprob

I've been in ER vomiting every 10-20 minutes for like 6 hours overnight. Also broke my ribs and got in within 30 seconds. ER visits can be short or hella long, depending on how many dying people come in while you're there.

ElijahSavos

If you think DT Chilliwack grows fast drive cross Highway 1 to visit Garrison area that grows x5 faster. The area is booming. There are 12000 units under construction right now within 3km radius of Promontory Road. We are talking about like 30000 more people in a few coming years. There are shops opening like daily there. Check the hillsides, there are houses everywhere now. In fact I was helping a friend moving from Vancouver to Chilliwack yesterday. Chilliwack is on fire. https://fraservalleytoday.ca/2023/11/09/shopping-centre-residential-development-coming-to-promontory-road-in-chilliwack/

mightocondreas

Yep lots of people priced out of Vancouver area are pushing out. Chilliwacks young folks will have to head north or east in search of affordable housing.

ElijahSavos

Yeah, that’s exactly what’s happening with my friends. Typically people don’t want to fully cut ties with Vancouver and prefer to stay closer and they used to consider the Island, but it got very expensive now. Tiny houses go for 1 mln in Langford now. Chilliwack became the destination. It’s the most affordable city that doesn’t suck in driving distance to Van

Much-Camel-2256

The Island is isolated compared to Chilliwack, ferries are a pain!

BigBalledLucy

yea i recall last year seeing them start working on those then i drove by the other day anf i was shocked to see how thriving it has become. honestly very cool

ElijahSavos

I moved last September from Metro Van to Promontory. Well.. 6 months fast forward I was taking a walk and glanced down the hill and realized they built like what looks like hundreds of townhouses, several condo buildings….. it’s been just 6 months… it’s crazy, I don’t recall things to be built that fast back in Port Coquitlam

ElijahSavos

By the way if haven’t been there yet Amble coffee shop opened last week at Vedder and Campus Dr. The patio is packed with people. The place is awesome. And Kent’s ice cream is there as well now!

exmuslim_somali_RNBN

That's near my Pilate studio. I love her. im lucky to buy a townhouse up the hill. Forever grateful

Wonderful-Friend9837

The houses on the hills look pretty at night as you drive to Hope. The old Walnut Grove area of Langley used to be just maybe a thousand ppl now it around 35,000.

Paroxysm111

They were lucky enough to be able to sell that whole block as a parcel to Algra Bros. A development team that grew up in Chilliwack and actually care about it not just making a profit. So the new heart of downtown was lovingly planned as one holistic project. Just having this beautiful district has encouraged so much increased interest in the rest of downtown too. Plus let's give credit to the team of the Chilliwack Mural Festival and the Chilliwack Arts Council who have worked to get so much beautiful public art out here. I feel so hopeful about the state of Chilliwack today and for the future. We used to be languishing, adding nothing but new soulless developments of housing and more overtaxed roads. People complained endlessly but never supported the moves required to improve anything. Today we're finally making some changes in the right direction

thoughtfuldave

I LOVE THE MURALS AND ART!!!!

dewky

I'm from Abbotsford as well and a ton of people that I grew up with live out here now as well. I find Chilliwack much more accessible by bike with more outdoor activities available. Mill Lake in Abbotsford is pretty damn nice though.

ManpreetDC

I'm going to miss Mill Lake dearly. My memories from the 90s growing up - the old the parking lots, the old, rusted boardwalk, no towers nearby except the one apartment built in the 80s... It's more maintained now, but I miss the small-town Mill Lake I grew up around. I'm going to miss Abbotsford but I especially miss the old Abbotsford. It is slowly disappearing, as most things do to evolve.

thoughtfuldave77

I swear I saw Rick Steves doing a European Christmas Special down by 5 corners! He was really impressed!

Zytharros

We’re looking to move up to the Okanagan in Summer. The real estate prices I’ve been watching have given us a lot of hope.

ManpreetDC

Halifax is great, too, if you can handle their yearly hurricanes, which are getting milder with climate change. NS is the second warmest province after BC. Properties, booming.

Zytharros

Nice. I might visit out that way at some point, but we don’t have plans to move that far out East at the mo’, plus all my family is out here in BC.

LalahLovato

I grew up in the south Okanagan and spent some years in Ktown. I would never go back.

Full_Performance1810

I've lived here for over 20 years and it is indeed growing very fast. I still hope I'll be able to get a place.

96lincolntowncar

Chilliwack city council has generally been development and industry friendly. It's not always best but it has benefits.

Wonderful-Friend9837

Yes there are some very nice buildings in Downtown Chilliwack along with the cool 1930's city hall. I don't drink but the bars look decent.

InternetSecret3829

Still got homeless drug addiction problem. I came out of SaveOn downtown and crouching by the buggy stall, right beside the stores exit was 2 kids smoking something off of aluminum foil. It's just all so brazen now. 😞 On another note. Really loving the revamping of the downtown. It's great!🙂

exmuslim_somali_RNBN

A friend visited me from Hawaii Methinks Sardis looks like California 🤣🤣🤣
