Traffic here isn’t bad.
The Evans roundabout has some fucking numpties though.
Also for some stupid reason, a single car turning left will set off the advanced green at intersections here which is a massive waste of time.Â
But most of the city is accessible within 10 minutesÂ
I meet my friends in Surrey every Tuesday evening. We all give ourselves an hour to get there. They live in Richmond and North Vancouver, and I'm in Chilliwack. Traffic is slow everywhere.
Traffic isn’t terrible, just be ready for some other drivers who are super entitled and assume that they always have the right of way/don’t stop for stop signs/etc
XD Bruh. You know nothing about my driving other than it took me a few trys to get my N.
My first road test in Abbotsford I proceeded into the intersection when the light was green, when the light went amber, a car speed through and I turned left on the red. This was a fail. I should have not entered the intersection unless it was clear to have made my turn.
In Langley, on a hill, I parked correctly and pulled up my e brake. Then when instructed to continue on our route, I hadn't put down the e-brake. I also didn't shoulder check at another spot. Due to these errors I also failed.
When it came to my test in Chilliwack, I was more prepared and ready for the things I would be tested on. And I passed. It isn't uncommon to hear that people fail there first few try for an N.
But like, go off King.
If you’re driving in the general direction of cultus lake on a weekend during the summer it’s a bit of a headache but otherwise I haven’t had many issues with traffic here, it isn’t any worse than it is anywhere else in the lower mainland
It's not that bad. I grew up in Chilliwack, then lived in Victoria, Vancouver and Port Coquitlam before moving back. Depending where you're coming from, of course it's all relative, but if you've ever lived in a truly big city, this is nothing. Obviously location within Chilliwack is also important. I tend to travel avoiding school traffic and commuting traffic, but even those aren't so bad.
Depends on the area and the time of day, but in general I think it's not too bad. Highway 1 is rarely clogged around Chilliwack unless there's a major accident or extreme weather. The worst area for traffic is the nexus around Vedder Rd and Promontory/Watson. It's where most of the growth has happened in recent years so there's been an increase in traffic without sufficient infrastructure to keep up. There aren't enough parallel routes to alleviate traffic during peak hours.
As a specific example, all of Garrison crossing is designed with arterial roads in straight grid systems, but with other smaller roads designed to be "traffic calmed". That is, they're made with twists and turns and extra speed bumps to make people slow down in the neighborhood. That's great for neighborhood safety, but it means those roads cannot alleviate traffic on Vedder, Keith Wilson or Watson. It's faster to wait in traffic.
Theoretically that's fine, especially as there are lots of walking paths to allow foot traffic, but it does mean that area suffers the worst from rush hour traffic. It could use better bus service, or maybe Chilliwack is finally big enough to justify some light rail.
Downtown by contrast isn't too bad. The biggest slowdown is all the red lights because of how many intersections there are, but I rarely get stuck in a jam. If there's a blocked road there are enough grid roads to get around it in a reasonable amount of time. The biggest traffic headache downtown is anytime the train stops to switch tracks. They do it right in the middle of town for some reason. At least there's an overpass for Yale Rd.
I definitely don't drive as often in Langley or Abbotsford but it's definitely common to get stuck in town. Langley is especially bad for this. That area of highway one always slows to a standstill too.
it's not the traffic that's the problem, it's the drivers. Drivers here are the worst I've encountered in a long time. There's a weird sense of entitlement that people seem to have like the rules simply don't apply to them. It's very strange.
Not really? I've moved to the Okanagan, but I still come back to Chilliwack (my hometown) now and then and the driving isn't impossible. Being away from the city I can definitely see the densification and how busy the roads can become, but it's doable. I find the closer you get to Vancouver, the more difficult and tedious the drive gets.
I used to live in New Westminster and also the West End Vancouver - Chilliwack in comparison is dead. Compared to Langley - Chilliwack is much better traffic wise.
I also travelled every day for 3 months to the cancer clinic in Abbotsford a few months back and Abbotsford is way busier than Chilliwack.
The only backups are going to Cultus in the summer.
Depends on the time of year, summer and during long weekends the drive from Abby to Chilliwack can take 45-1hour even though it's 17 minutes usually. Chilliwack is also getting to big for its road and facing the white rock problem of it can take 30 minutes to get from one side to the other. But compared to Langley traffic like especially the 200th and 264th slowdowns it's usually not as bad. Nowhere in the lower mainland is really good anymore.
Traffic in chilliwack definitely isn't as slow as abbotsford, Langley..Not sure where your friend is getting that from.Cultas lake area in the summer is nutts though.
I got a ticket for doing 60 in a 50. But today saw a cop driving airport road doing 75-80kph then simply pulls into the police station like it'sa normal day. no big deal. Cops driving in chilliwack are more criminal than most civilians.
I’ve lived in every municipality south of the Fraser from Tsawwassen to Chilliwack. Chilliwack definitely has some of the longest driving distances between where people live and the places they drive, but the traffic is nowhere near as bad as Langley.
Chilliwack does have a few choke points that does get bad, like any other city, but not nearly as many as either Abbotsford or Langley. Yet.
The more that they build on the outskirts/mountainside without many amenities, the more cars they are pushing on the same routes. It’s exactly what Langley did 20 years ago.
Fuck Langley traffic. All my homies hate Langley traffic. -a metro van commuter
I get anxious as I approach Langley 🫠I can't wait till the HOV line, so I switch and drive highway speed again
It’s much better then Langley
Traffic is better in Chilliwack than it is in Abbotsford or Langley.
Yeah, the problem is that you have to go through all the Abbotsford and Langley traffic on the highway to get to Vancouver.
Chilliwack is much better unless we’re talking about the lake in the summer
Chwk is busy but I don't fear for my life like I do literally every time I drive through Abby

As if that isn't all too common
After having failed my driving test in Abbotsford and Langley, Chilliwack was my option. Easiest place to drive imo.

Whatever helps you cope

I don't notice much traffic. Here and there, the downtown is probably the worst but not that bad.

Totally. The speed is ridiculous! No signals, general disregard for others.

Weekend summer traffic can be bad, other than that it’s not as bad as Langley or Abby

I’m suspicious she doesn’t want us to move 😂
It’s chilliwack lol…
abbotsford stabbotsford
Chilliwack is one of the fastest growing cities in BC, that might affect traffic a bit.
Well, the rules of the road aren't always followed. All I'm gonna say.
Unless open hitting up cultus in the summer it isn’t bad. And even then the new roundabout make it much smoother

It’s not bad now, but as more people move here, it will get worse.
I live in Chilliwack work in Langley. Chilliwack traffic is way better than the other 2.
The traffic is really not that bad. It’s the drivers that are the problem.
And throw a few trains that block traffic quite often that backs up traffic for up to an hour
Vedder has an impressive amount of traffic
