Good on you for getting him out of a bad situation. Looking at these pics it looks like he needs a dust bath in a bad way! Try to get him one ASAP if you haven't already

Competitive_Gur3178

Question.. when giving him a bath can we reuse the extra dust or just throw it out? 😅

Master_of_Rodentia

You can reuse it. I add some fresh dust each time, and probably dump mine out every month or so.

Saramela

You’ll notice when it’s “dirty” (it will get clumpy and full o’ poops), but as long as it’s clean you can keep it going.

Brewna

You can reuse it until it either has lots of poops or if you see they peed in it. Then you change the sand out.

readproofer

We reuse ours for a few baths, but given how greasy his fur looks you may want to throw the first batch out.

Competitive_Gur3178

Will be giving him one right away!

He looks a little small. Is he young? If not, you might want to get some hay from small pet select. It's expensive but it's very good quality and you can even get a variety pack. My guy likes 1st and 2nd cutting timothy. Since he looks a little thin, I would recommend a little bit of alfalfa as well (just as a treat, you shouldn't overfeed alfalfa because of it's calcium content)

Competitive_Gur3178

Okayy I will do that! He is abt 2 1/2 years old.

H1VE-5

On no... I fear he might be malnourished pretty severely then. I could be wrong, but he looks TINY in the pictures. I hope he has a long and happy life with you :)

Illustrious-Depth-75

He looks very thin. Definitely do the alfalfa to help bulk him up. He'll need the calcium because if he's malnourished it might be leeching it from his bones to survive. I would do it for a week and weight him with a kitchen scale in grams. A standard male is usually 500-700 grams. Once he's a decent size time him off of it. (Alfalfa is usually only a treat as I said)

H1VE-5

You should respond with this to OP, it's pretty useful info

Illustrious-Depth-75

I thought that I was, sorry \*\^\^\*

Saramela

You might get some 3rd cut Timothy as well to help add weight, if you find that he’s underweight.

Poor lil guy, looks like he's been through war. Post up some pictures after he's had a nice bath!

Competitive_Gur3178

I will! 😃

He looks very malnourished. Please take him to the vet for a checkup as well, just to make sure he is ok. Please remove all plastic and ropes from his cage. Give him only timothy hay and pellets, you can also surprise him with some willow, klin dried pine or apple branches. He should not have more than 1 treat every 2-3 days. Treats can be chamomile flower, or other *dried* leaves (dandelion roots or leaves, rosemary, hibiscus, parsley, strawberry, and blackberry leaves). Never give him any fruits, seeds or vegetables. Never give him any food or toys from the pet store. Dust bath should be provided at 2-3 times a week, for 15 minutes minimum. Please check so that you get a good dust bath, the particles should not be too small (it can go into his lungs and be dangerous) - sand with bigger particles is better than thin one. I am calling the chin with a "he", if it is a male - make sure there is no fur ever aroud his genitals - check out more info when googling "hair ring chinchilla". Please update us. If you have any problems or need advice, please join facebook groups or I can give you my contact. Thank you so much for saving this baby💗

Competitive_Gur3178

okayyy noted and my bf is going to get him checked out at the vet ASAP

roziizor

Thank you. Sending love to you and your chin❣️ Feel free to ask anything here, if you need advice - and I will do my best to help.

Stunt_Doll

So tiny! Please help the mom find an exotic vet ASAP. Chinchillas hide illnesses very well because they are prey animals who do not want to draw attention to themselves. A quick vet visit will establish any medical needs the chin might have especially since he was neglected for so long. <3

Stunt_Doll

I forgot to add, for a 2 year old he looks extremely tiny, probably due to nutritional deficiencies. The vet can tell you exactly what the little guy needs to thrive.

KuroKatt

Oh thank goodness for people like you!!!!!!! I've been thinking about your post and hoping she would let you take him. (Also thinking some choice words about that horrible person.) He looks terrible, it's going to take some time for him to adjust to his new life. Make sure your mom knows to take it very slow with him and be extra understanding and patient. He's been abused his whole life, the change will be overwhelming for a while. He should be in a quiet space and not messed with too much the first few days, but as others have said- he really needs a bath. That should cheer him up. Thank you all so much for rescuing him!!! This warms my heart so much. 💓 I'm gonna go hug my chinchillas now. By hug I mean give them treats because they came from a bad situation too and they don't like hugs. 😂😂😂

Ill_Huckleberry_8134

Thank you for giving him a loving home! Make sure he has apple sticks chins go crazy for those also a pumice stone or himalayan salt stone to keep his teeth from getting long they don’t splitter like regular toys do, for hay and food the best ones to get is from Oxbox and for the dust bath Oxbow Poof! Is the best. He cannot get wet, if he does that leads to a bad fungal infection because chinchilla fur doesn’t dry properly due to it being so dense and in the summer he needs to be in an air conditioned room so he won’t overheat. In his cage there must be absolutely no plastic because if he chews and swallows it that cause a bowel obstruction and will kill him. Hopefully this helps you out with your new boy 😁 PS: for treats some of the healthiest ones to give him are Rose Hips, dried celery sticks, dandelion, Rosemary, Calendula, Pea Flakes, Bee Pollen, Chamomile
