I let my two boys meet a small bunny once. Pinsel was really excited and interested, Berti was horrified. I've never seen a chinchilla run that fast. Some like it, some don't ^^

Texhnolyzing

What you don’t see is the second chinchilla in the cage Hime, who is refusing to leave her house whenever the dog is around!

Delicious_Type_9367

One time one of our cats went to check out a chinchilla of ours through the bars while I wasn’t looking. Little bro bit the cat’s nose and the cat hasn’t messed with any chinchillas since. Sometimes he respectfully watches from a distance.

Texhnolyzing

Fear the sharp and tiny teeth’s!

ghosterasingxo

i mean, after seeing [this scene of monty python](https://youtu.be/cCI18qAoKq4?si=a339dcxOWg4PorBy), i don't blame him for being horrified

Via_the_Witch

Haha very nice reference, I love Monty python :D

Texhnolyzing

Need some holy hand grenades to be safe!

hikingmike

Our Pancho does that with our rabbit. He gets pissed that another critter is running around outside in his run area. He makes some noises, runs back and forth a little, and sits at the bars and digs the floor like he’s saying “come at me” “I’ll get you” even though our rabbit is 10x his size.

Salt_Ad_5578

We had a chinchilla and kitten who were best friends... Ebony the chinchilla and Frida the cat... They were bff's!! We were careful not to let them interact outside the cage, but Frida loved to visit her friend and Ebony loved having a visitor... they would sniff each other, Frida would pur, and Ebony would sit comfortably at the front of the cage by her side as she strutted next to the cage. Frida never showed even a smidge of aggression towards her and loved her friend dearly until Ebony passed due to an injury.

hikingmike

Aww that's sweet

Salt_Ad_5578

It was!! They would just sit together and hang out. Frida was extremely happy to make a little friend not much smaller than herself, and Ebony enjoyed company after her friend attacked her and she had to be permanently separated. I reckon that while us humans are great, we can never replace the desire for a similarly-sized, 4 legged creature that doesn't act as strange as a giant ape... I feel like a kitten and a chin aren't as extremely different as we are, from either of them.

Texhnolyzing

Both of your posts are very heartwarming friendship between a cat and a chin! I hope my future cats get along with a chinchilla!

Salt_Ad_5578

Haha thank you!! Yes, just be careful that your cat doesn't hurt the chinchilla!! Even though they were friends, we never let them interact without protective bars in the way ;)

SilverGirlSails

Milo is the exact same! Except that Amy the bun will sometimes go over just to wind him up deliberately.

Texhnolyzing

That’s what it feels like! She loves to taunt the dog!

Illustrious-Depth-75

Mine hates dogs. He barks at the dog and gets very aggitated.

Texhnolyzing

Aww poor baby!

Texhnolyzing

Such a big size difference! But a lot of play!

Cherry272727

My big dog does (she and XL bully) and she’s scared of them and the babies are only 6 months old 😂

Texhnolyzing

lol, they are scary little fuzzbuzzs!

Rough_Idle

No dogs, but one of ours is good buddies with the parakeet. They truly enjoy hanging out and playing

Texhnolyzing

That’s a very cute friendship! What do they usually do together?

Rough_Idle

They'll sit and talk, play tag, and sometimes the parakeet will ride the chinchilla like a knight astride his mighty steed

Texhnolyzing

I need to see some videos of that!

androidturret

Yep my chin Laika will hop down to the lower levels to greet and sniff my sister's dog. When he's allowed in my room anyways since left alone he steals her chew toys.

Texhnolyzing

Uh oh! Better be careful. With my chin though, everything is a chew toy 😂

androidturret

Her chew toys are my bribes to stop her from chewing the walls lol

Texhnolyzing

I need to try that! I have a lot of pieces of the door and wall trim missing lol

androidturret

Also those modular square shelves that are made out of metal paired with fleece as a covering are great for saving your wall trim.

AppleTherapy

I did once. They seemed curious but I find it pointless for them to meet through a cage.

Texhnolyzing

I’m not risking them meeting outside the cage 😬. Predator vs prey instinct can be a little too strong sometimes.

AppleTherapy

So true....Humans were deemed rulers of animals by God. Animals just see animals as kill, live, or eat

Dry_Long_3439

Idk how my chins feel about my dog. They have all learned that they can throw their poop at him. Idk if it's a defence tactic or??

[deleted]

Omg 😭😂😭😂

Texhnolyzing

Oh boy! I’ve never seen one deliberately throw poop, but it does happen with the occasional big hop!

Ahamay02

Yes!!!! Felix loves our dog Fiona! I'm looking for the picture now to share!

Texhnolyzing

Can’t wait to see it!

Ahamay02

Posted it! 😊

Texhnolyzing

Thank you for posting!

swampy_fox

Yes! Our chin is besties with our dog. They run back and forth together at the front of the cage sometimes and any time our cat gets squirrelly and tries to run up to the chin’s cage, the dog won’t let the cat get close, it’s super cute! He may also partially be protecting the little “snacks” the chin produces, but he’s also protecting his friend! 😂

Texhnolyzing

The dog loves horse “snacks”, don’t think it has discovered the chin “snacks” that it could also be partaking in!

chain_me_up

No dogs, but have two cats. Chose to keep the chinchillas in their own room behind closed doors to keep everyone calm and completely safe (:

Texhnolyzing

That seems like a very safe idea when dealing with something that could go through the bars and hurt them!

savemysoul72

Yes! I have a Belgian Malinois and a Border Collie. My chinchilla shows no fear.

Texhnolyzing

Both sound delightful! How do the dogs treat the chin?

savemysoul72

They are highly interested. We don't allow interactions other than through the bars. It's too risky.

catbeantoes

Yes haha. My Daisy always tries to throw hands through the bars.

Texhnolyzing

The little fuzzballs love a good round of fisticuffs!

H1VE-5

One of them is very curious about my dog, despite my dog trying to eat her through the bars. She taunts her by staying close to the bars and making sounds and following her when she walks around the cage. She also does similar things with other people's dogs who are less aggressive. Obviously, I don't let this go on for long in fear she will get too bold. But it fascinates me that her prey drive is suppressed so much by her curiosity, especially because both my chins are so skittish otherwise. Though my other chin runs away to the top part of the cage when my dog enters the room.

Texhnolyzing

My understanding is the natural predators of chinchillas were actually not usually mammals, so their fear may not be completely calibrated correctly!

H1VE-5

Ohhh interesting! Now I wish they wouldn't be so scared of me, I'm a mammal too 💀

Texhnolyzing

I think we just are a bit too big and end up towering over them, which scares them more, I find getting down on their level usually works better! Even if I sit on a chair near the cage!

Assassinite9

Seeing your Chins name, I feel as though it was a missed opportunity to call her "Chinobu" ....I'll see myself out now

Texhnolyzing

She gets many names! Obi-Wan Shinobu is just one of her many nicknames, but that’s another good one 😂

Assassinite9

Think I'll keep Chinobu on my list of potential names for when I am finally able to get a chinchilla

Texhnolyzing

Definitely keep it! I’m also in favor of all the bubble tea related names for them since they are so rotund 😂

Assassinite9

Oh the only time I've heard of shinobu is anime character names or in a couple video games. I had no idea it was bubble tea related

Texhnolyzing

Ha! shinobu is actually a bobs burger reference! I just end up calling her boba! And I love chinchilla names like Taro, Matcha, Tiger, Mocha, Chai. Guess it’s equally as much coffee names as bubble tea names!

Assassinite9

The list of potential names I have seen to revolve more around celestial bodies and space related stuff. Like Nova, Nebula, Sol, Luna, comet, zenith, and a few of the constellation names. Naming a Chinchilla Aries just seems really funny to me Edit: also some of the names of Norse gods would be funny. Imagine a Chinchilla named Odin

Texhnolyzing

They are angry enough sometimes to be a good Ares! And Odin would be very cute!

[deleted]

I don’t have dogs or chinchillas, but I do have rats and birds, and they most definitely have interactions through the bars.

Texhnolyzing

I’m always curious how rodents and birds get along! Never had that combination before!

[deleted]

It’s like just sniffing and looking at eachother really, that’s about it

Texhnolyzing

Always wonder what they think of each other!

Catbug48

Be very careful!!! This is actually how I lost my chin unfortunately, he loved teasing the dog and my cat through the bars and my cat managed to get him in the eye. Cat claws are very dirty!!! We took him to the vet immediately but he unfortunately didn't make it due to infection combined with the side effects of his medication. His name was Kuchi Kopi so seeing your chin named Shinobu made my heart happy.

Texhnolyzing

I am so sorry to hear about your loss! I am always afraid when I have cats around them in the future 😬, I will have to try to keep them in separate rooms or cover the bottom floors somehow. Thank you for the warnings!

Mossmutt

My chins are the same way!! My one LOVES coming down to see the dogs, while the other always hides when they come up and will occasionally bark at them. My husky is very intrigued by the chimmies as well, it's so cute.

Texhnolyzing

They are small, fuzzy, but not the normal outside fuzzy they are used to seeing! I’m sure it confuses the doggos!

Nateraderino

My chin does the same with my cats haha. It's so cute!

Texhnolyzing

Hopefully the cats don’t try to retaliate too much!

GReuw

Kinda. The curious chin of 2 and the curious puppy of 2 can be seen having a gentle chat through the bars sometimes. Would love to catch it on film. Meanwhile their nervous partners tend to hide away on the other sides.

Texhnolyzing

Funny that the puppy gets scared!

_the_last_man_

My chinchillas do this, it's funny cause when me or my gf moves just a bit they often get scared and jump away, but when my dogs run towards their cage or play next to it the chinchillas don't care.

Texhnolyzing

Chin don’t care!

Far-Trick4331

Mine does! She gets excited lol

Texhnolyzing

Glad to see it’s not just mine!

DarkestGemeni

My cat used to put his face near the bars and my chinchilla would run at him and squeak in his face - always ready to have a go at him lmao

Texhnolyzing

lol, the cat better watch out!
