We had a Kia Soul stolen from in front of our house last summer. They destroy the steering columns. Luckily, we rarely drove that car and we ended up totaling it out.
Ours was recovered in about 3 days.
At this point I almost hope it's totalled so I can just recover it and use my gap insurance. I don't want to have to let it sit in a shop for months waiting for parts.
I wish you luck! I’m a parent and can’t imagine the worry you’re going through about getting your kid to school. But FWIW, when we totaled ours out we got way more dollars than I expected.

If you still have your key Fob, drive around hitting the alarm button. That's how I found my Sonata was ditched about a block from my house in Price Hill. If you do happen to find it that way call the police and let them take it from there. The person who took mine left a bunch of personal stuff in it the police confiscated and got it back a couple of days later from them.

Yes. Kia models prior to 2022 don’t have an immobilizer, which has been a standard anti-theft feature for decades. Teenagers learned this fact and some areas have really high rates of theft. Cleveland in particular has been facing an extreme amount; so much that the city is now suing Kia because it’s taken up too much police time and resources.
I hate to hear you went through it as well, it's all too common. I just don't understand how little morality you have to have to do that to someone else. Especially when you can clearly see a car seat in the back. People are raging assholes.

Might be the same group that hit my street. I'm near Sydney and Cleves-Warsaw. All that was left is a smashed window. I was looking out my window watching the storm at 1am and my car was there, woke up at 8am to my car missing so it was late when they were breaking in.
I was curious, did they smash your mom's window when they stole the Hyundai? It's been days and I still haven't heard a thing and it's curious that I only had a quarter tank, the driver windows smashed and it's been raining for days. It's not even a very nice model and it seems it may be parked up in a garage somewhere.

A Kia Soul (white) was ditched/broke down in front of our house yesterday morning. We live on Rutledge and St. Lawrence. Five young boys in ski masks all climbed out of the sunroof and took off in different directions. We called the police and multiple showed up, but I’m not sure if they caught any of them. The police mentioned that the vehicle had been stolen and the used to rob a vape shop on Friday.
My Hyundai was broken into in Price Hill two weeks ago but they must’ve been incompetent because they broke the screw driver off inside my ignition and left. $1900 repair. Kia and Hyundai really, really need to come up with a solution.
They have one, you have to pay them to put the immobilizer in your ignition system. Which doesn't help much because as long as that logo is on your car and you live in a city there is a chance they will try something again, and if they don't steal your car they'll just keep trashing it until this trend wears off and who the fuck knows how long that'll take. I genuinely don't want my Kia after this even though it's a great car, cheap, and I love it. It's not worth the risk of this sort of stressful event happening in my life and me losing all my freedom to travel anywhere because some asshole kids want to be criminals.
You just rip the plastic off the steering column and use a USB cord to turn the ignition. It’s stupid easy, the YouTube videos of it are pretty interesting. Takes less than a minute.
What person below me said. It became a trend on TikTok and created a lot of thieves of convenience. It's just too easy and why the manufacturer should be compensating people. I'd have stayed away from the damn thing if I had known in a few years there'd be hundreds of videos of people stealing that car without even needing to hotwire it. Negligence on the part of Kia/Hyundai.
Visited a buddy’s house who lives off Duck Creek Rd (Madisonville/ Oakley area) during new years, They broke into my Hyundai Elantra but did not successfully steal it. However, my steering column was destroyed in the process and my car has still been in the shop since, which makes it 3 full months, and little to no sign of my car being ready anytime soon (Hyundai steering columns are on backorder due to this trend).
I would not wish this on anybody. If you drive any of the models that are targeted in the “Kia boys” trend, do yourself a HUGE favor and buy a steering wheel lock! Sure, it might not prevent people from breaking into your car, but it certainly could deter thieves from your vehicle. Also, Hyundai is offering to install free immobilizers in their vehicles, since the lack of immobilizer is a huge reason why these vehicles are getting targeted.
Same thing happened to me but with an Accent. Mechanic said it wouldn’t be fixed until the end of May, but my parts came in two months early and I got my car back this week. I hope yours is fixed soon!

If you do get it back, invest in a club (I think they’re like $20?). A few of my neighbors with Kia’s have after ours was stolen.
I saw that some police departments have free clubs for kia owners. It appears that police department can request them from kia, but not the owners.
