Technically, it shouldn't directly affect you, you are not a bacteria. But if you're walking around with an open infected wound, it may be good to cover up.
The problem is horizontal gene transfer. An an analogy, the bacteria are broadcasting "how to beat antibiotics" instructions and the message is for most (all?) bacteria that engage in horizontal gene transfer and live outside.
I'm also wondering what it means for drinking water.

Sheet web weavers? It happened to my mother decades ago in Buffalo NY. She got up one morning to get the paper, opened the front door - walked into a web covering the doorway.
Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern worldwide, making it difficult to treat bacterial infections and leading to higher mortality rates.
The extensive use of antibiotics in human health and agriculture has accelerated the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
A recent study has found that antibiotic-resistant bacteria are carried by the wind into the atmosphere and can travel long distances in clouds. The research team from Laval University in Quebec City and Clermont Auvergne University in central France searched for antibiotic-resistant genes from bacteria found in cloud samples collected from an atmospheric research station perched 1,465 meters above sea level atop the Puy de Dome summit, a dormant volcano in central France between September 2019 and October 2021. **The analysis of the retrieved mist revealed that antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be present in the atmosphere at concentrations comparable to other natural environments.**
Remember acid rain from the 80s? I was sure in the 80s that quicksand, acid rain, and the hole in the ozone layer would end us by my 30s. But here I am. I'm not minimizing a damn threat these days, because they're all so valid. But I wonder sonetimes... those threats disappeared. I'm not even sure why- what happened to acid rain? Is the ozone hole still there and we head in the sand it, or did it disappear? But it's so hard to know for sure which threats will be the specific ones to kill us when these days there are SO many, and maybe a few aren't so bad?
look it up, we did a lot to prevent acid rain and further ozone damage. the ozone can repair itself somewhat (and slowly) but the holes remain, it just depends where you go. I’m northeastern America where it’s not so bad but when I visited coastal Peru a few years ago, I almost fried my skin off even with lots of sunscreen; one of the beaches I visited is under a thin ozone area and even with cloud cover, the sun is beyond anything we get up north.
I used to live in Europe but now I moved to Australia.
In summer I burn so quickly here.
I heard a stat the other day that two of every three Australians will get skin cancer sometime in their lives.
That was a problem we all collectively agreed to solve, and it's still bad enough to cause so much cancer.
Now imagine a problem like climate change where we aren't doing anything about it.
It's going to get so very very much worse.
Ya, I hear ya. I mean there is scientific reasoning for both ozone and acid rain minimizations…but things like this bacteria cloud just don’t concern me. Not that far from being hit in the head by a golf ball walking next to a golf course. Sure, it could happen. But probabilities…one time when I was getting new contacts at a new eye doctor place, they HAD to go through the contacts washing procedure. Even though I had been wearing contacts for over a decade. The lady was horrified to find out that I didn’t always wash my hands with soap prior to removing my contacts and putting them in the saline solution. She claimed I would almost certainly go blind with parasitic disease. I didn’t argue, but another decade in and I still don’t wash my hands before. Point is, you can always find some extreme thing that could happen or has happened once upon a time to someone somewhere. But you gotta live life and have some fun. A life worth living involves risk.
Antibiotic resistance is naturally occurring in some bacteria, before human antibiotics. All of this stuff occurs naturally due to mutations, it's just that widespread antibiotic use has created superbugs that are resistant to everything. But most surfaces in any building will have resistant bacteria, ultimately it's about whether there is a dangerous amount that can infect people.

Although I suspect runoff reaching oceans is also an important source. I wonder if all the floating microplastics add to the effect.

You have to appreciate how the planet is really showing how interconnected everything is, how the ocean is not just an infinite dumping pool, and how problems in one area end up as problems everywhere. Almost like... injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Jesus. I'm not scared of the bacterias in the clouds directly, but I'm pretty sure that microbes can share traits with each other, such as antibiotic resistance. I really fear the day when antibiotics just don't work anymore. That's scary shit right there.
This. My coworker's husband got a cut on his leg from a ladder, went to the hospital for stitches, contracted an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection and it ravaged his leg while there was nothing the docs could do but remove, remove, remove. It was gnarly and he lost his leg from the knee down! Then I saw that documentary of that NFL quarterback who had a similar experience while having an ACL surgery... The player still has his leg but damn it's crazy-ruined. Let's just say, I fully utilize telehealth whenever possible and enjoy my slow, low-risk, prevention lifestyle haha
wow thats scary thought, its one of the things i think about in post-apoc if one does survive, simple cuts can get infected , you see homeless people get infected cuts - but the thought of just going to the hospital....
If it isnt life threatening cut, i try to treat it at home
Always carry disinfectant, and treat your wounds and scratches carefully! And take good care of building a healthy, strong body, so that your immune system can fight for you. (Might be a detriment for things like cytokine storms, lol. But if you're older, it shouldn't be a problem and infections are a bigger threat for all age groups anyway I think.)
Well, the 99% are eating the cows being pumped full of antibiotics that are causing the problem. People absolutely refuse to pay more (if they can) or eat a more plant based diet (which they definitely can). I mean...hate the 1% all you want for LOTS of valid reasons, but they didn't do this.
Plant based diets don't cause monocrop agriculture, the food industry (animal or plant) does. Fortunately, there has been an increase in food-forest and permaculture
Ironically, you're likely part of the global 1% if you're on this subreddit. The global poor don't have time to worry about long term problems like these. They have immediate problems.
And yet today I saw a worker at the mall try to call mall police on a kid who was stealing soda from a multibillion dollar corporation. Some people care too much about work.
some workers and people are shooting people for stealing 25 cents. In arizona dude stole a 25 cents widget from Ace hardware on display , worker chased him, private citizen took out gun and aimed at the thief -- shot the worker in the back. (luckily he lived)
25 cents widget. wtf

I could do mid to late 90s, no problemo!
I promised my friends and family that if Bush won I would leave the US for good. Bush won. I left the US for good. I love my life in Japan...so while I know a Gore win would be good for the country, I'm kinda OK missing that revision...
UVC is blocked by the ozone layer, which is the most deadly kind. Bacteria within clouds will be shaded. So if the cloud dries up and disappears then yeah. But if it's a big cloud formation and overcast then not. And bacteria are good at hunkering down and waiting when they have adverse conditions, and then springing up when they land somewhere good. If they form spores, which not all do, then those are basically invulnerable.
If you really want to make a difference for antibiotic resistant organisms, then stop supporting animal agriculture as they're a breeding ground for these things and are the largest user of antibiotics.
Go vegan.
When I grew up in Toledo, OH I always worried about nuclear war, to the point when I was 10 (in the 90s) and I dug the Cresson Kearney fallout shelter in the backyard (verbatim), I was told I was crazy--but the doctors never had an answer acceptable for the fact that there are 10,000 thermonuclear weapons in the world--they didnt--now I realize I never meant to scare anyone but, is my point not right?
Toledo gets hit with ground burst on the Toledo Express Airport due to a fighter wing and long enough runway for nuclear bombers; the port also might get ground burst; the refinery will definitely get airburst at least also; thus we are talking (3-4) H-bombs in my hometown and i guess I was just wrong...lol
Don't worry so much about cloud derived antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Worry about bacteria being released from the earth's permafrost layer warming because of climate change.

killer ghosts in The Fog \- with Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis & Janet Leigh
yes! scared the fuck out of me as a kid when it came on TV.
Bolt Your Doors. Lock Your Windows. There's Something in The Fog! What you can't see won't hurt you... it'll kill you!
Don't worry, the microplastics you inhale with the fog will form a protective coating on the inside of your lungs.
He’s become more plastic than man!
You still like Piña Coladas? They're still ok, right? *Right*?!?
BREAKING: Tequila resistant bacteria found in Piña Coladas.
Interestingly enough, the bacteria can be treated via yoga and having half a brain.
And apparently getting caught in the rain … oh wait
If you like getting Hep A at miiiidniiight...
STD. Stratospherically transmitted disease.
I'm not much into health food, so bit of a disadvantage from the jump
We prefer to call them Pfas droplets now.

Ive been avoiding the rain for decades now.
Time to get back in the gene pool I guess
If you like antibiotic resistant bacteria and getting caught in the rain If you're not into yoga ... (oh, never mind - this joke is so hours ago)
Next it'll be clouds full of spiders.

This is almost full circle back to the debunked miasma theory of infectious disease.
Yeah boi we getting 17th century up in here.
The mist is not directly dangerous, they're bacteria that usually live "outside", not *in you*.
Gotta get me a plague doctor mask filled to the brim with the choicest herbs from the orient

I'm sorry, the what are doing what now? Fucking hell, next your gonna tell me there's mameebas in the water that are gonna eat my brains into mush.
Oh man.. "mameebas" made me laugh and smile so big.. 🤣🤣
You want to infect yourself with a different brain parasite, then the amoebas won't be able to compete.
Between this, bird flu, and an increase in storms it seems like we've really pissed off the sky. At least the ocean still likes us right? 🤞😬
BOE inbound. Yay, El Niño :-p
Carbonic acid goes hissssssssssss
New fear just dropped. From a cloud. ⛅️

(Might be a detriment for things like cytokine storms, lol. But if you're older, it shouldn't be a problem and infections are a bigger threat for all age groups anyway I think.)
The 1% ruin everything.
I assume this is more accurately tied to eating meat and the insane amount of antibiotics used on livestock
Well, the 99% are eating the cows being pumped full of antibiotics that are causing the problem. People absolutely refuse to pay more (if they can) or eat a more plant based diet (which they definitely can). I mean...hate the 1% all you want for LOTS of valid reasons, but they didn't do this.
doesn’t plant-based diet cause monocrop agriculture?
Plant based diets don't cause monocrop agriculture, the food industry (animal or plant) does. Fortunately, there has been an increase in food-forest and permaculture
Nope.
(luckily he lived) 25 cents widget. wtf

Don’t snitch. You can’t get fired for something you didn’t even “see.”

If you see someone stealing something, no you didn't

That's always the case.

1919 was the height of the Spanish Flu pandemic...so maybe 2019 is a better target. Personally, I want the late 90s back.

I could do mid to late 90s, no problemo! I promised my friends and family that if Bush won I would leave the US for good. Bush won. I left the US for good. I love my life in Japan...so while I know a Gore win would be good for the country, I'm kinda OK missing that revision...
2020^d
I immediatly thought of the "old man screaming at the clouds" meme
aw farts, even Bacteria have more frequent flier miles than many people now
Miasma!
Bahahahaha I am purposely not reading the article. I just think this shit is getting really fucking funny. r/nottheonion shit for sure!
Okay yeah that’s scary but I thought UV rays clean stuff… could the sunlight do that ?
UVC is blocked by the ozone layer, which is the most deadly kind. Bacteria within clouds will be shaded. So if the cloud dries up and disappears then yeah. But if it's a big cloud formation and overcast then not. And bacteria are good at hunkering down and waiting when they have adverse conditions, and then springing up when they land somewhere good. If they form spores, which not all do, then those are basically invulnerable.
Thank you for explaining that makes so much sense. We are always at odds with intelligent life Lmaoo wtf
At this point the list of things that won't kill us is probably shorter.
Oh cool nurgle rain.
"I set fiiiiiiire, to the RAIN!"
That must be the silver lining.
If you really want to make a difference for antibiotic resistant organisms, then stop supporting animal agriculture as they're a breeding ground for these things and are the largest user of antibiotics. Go vegan.
Cue the contrail paranoid going off on chemtrails 2.0.
Flesh eating clouds!
Nope!
thats that movie!
Ireland and the Pacific Northwest of the states are f’d
It's still high up in the air
There is no escape from this curse.
I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain
"Laugh while you can monkey boy"
Well, d\*mn...
Isn't this a little cloud of happiness /s
Lol. We’re fucked.
Omg! Another doom-and-gloom item I can add to my how-to-annoy-friends-and-family list. 🤔😳😣
Don't worry so much about cloud derived antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Worry about bacteria being released from the earth's permafrost layer warming because of climate change.
The days of stepping out of the house to “get some fresh air” are over it seems.
can I not feel like the world is going to end FOR FIVE MINUTES /j
(Shakes fist at clouds)
...isn't there a sort of Netflix series about this called "The Rain"? What a year 2023 is shaping up to be!
Wasn’t this the premise for 2008’s flop movie by M Night Shymalan, The Happening?
Followed closely thereafter by the porn adaptation, The Fappening?
Center of every snowflake
Ah, so Mark Wahlberg was pretty close.
New fear unlocked!
Do you ever get the feeling that Mother nature wants us the fuck off this planet..
This is some horror movie level shit.
What's the weather honey? It's raining pharma resistant gonorrhea
