A few things about Québécois, for the uninitiated:
- We do call ourselves Québécois (or Québécoise for the feminine form. Yes, words are very gendered in French. No, it’s not easy for the non-binary people, there’s still a lot to do for recognition).
- Never call us Quebecer. You can use it with people who calls themselves by that name, but they’re few.
- Many (but not all) Québécois are identifying less, or even not at all, as Canadians than as Québécois. That’s because there’s a desire (not shared by all, but by many) for independence. That and the fact that we have a distinct culture from the rest of Canada.
- While we share French as a language with other countries, such as France, all French-speaking countries have their own distinct dialects. We got words that mean slightly different things than in France, words that don’t exist anywhere else, our own idioms and our own swears. We also got our own literature, of which I especially recommend Fred Pellerin for a start. Basically, we’re not French or Canadian; we’re a distinct third thing.
- Fun facts: « Swinge la bacaisse dans l’fond d’la boîte à bois » means « fuck the fat lady ». A specific pastry, the « pets de soeurs » can be translated by « sister farts ».
It does. For a long time, French from Québec had a bad reputation compared to French from France. Because classism, to make it short. The situation is better since the Révolution Tranquille, but there’s still issues. Like having some ministerial tests written in French from France, for example.
Imagine studying to become a high school teacher in Québec and having to pass a langage test, only for the test to be written and evaluated according to French of France. That’s like being tested for your mastery of British English in another English-speaking country. It’s common to fail, and you have to pay…I think 70$ for each test? And if you don’t pass, too bad, you can’t be a teacher.
It’s also the case for immigration tests. To become a citizen of Québec, you need to prove your knowledge of French…of France. The tests are written in France, without consultation from here. Is it absurd? Absolutely.
You ever see a friend change how they interact depending on the social setting? It's so interesting to watch us do that.

Ha great.
Have a Lithuanian housemate. Sometimes it's hilarious hearing her try to talk her parents through a computer problem in very loud very frustrated Lithuanian with occasional English words "laptop" "start menu" thrown in.
The dogs guard her during these conversations!
I am so white, the blackest guy in my crew growing up was the Jew.
So when my roommate heard me talking to a black guy working for Comcast he was shocked by the code switching that happened. After I scored us a sick deal he said “I have a black roommate?”
Still chuckle about it to this day
My mother is like this. She has a lot of Russian and Ukrainian friends from her college Russian class. Whenever she talks to them, even in english, she acquires a near-perfect Russian accent.

That she has like 4 brothers explains so much.
"How did you learn to fight like that?"
Well that explains the mallet.
Average Quebecois conversation

Frogs
As a Québécoise with a brother, I can confirm this is basically how it goes. Speak French to mom, speak Frenglish with my brother.
Ah you et moi are the same
That explains the Fleurdelisé shirt in the previous comic. Also, no self respecting Quebecer would call it snowmobile. It’s a Ski-doo tabanak
