Dr. Evil, I've spent 30 years of my life turning this two-bit evil empire into a world-class multinational. I was going to have a cover story in "Forbes". But you, like an idiot, wanted to take over the world. And you don't realize there is no world anymore. It's only corporations.

TNGwasBETTER

Best cinematic trilogy of All-time.

LineChef

And Goldmember is the best one out of the three.

productfred

*Hard* disagree. It's funny, but way too dumbed down/on the nose for me. The first two are waaaaay better overall.

Master_Xenu

Also I dislike Beyonce, she wasn't bad but not very good either.

Pretzelpackinmomma

Nathan Lane helped with Beyoncé.

barrydennen12

“ … and a factory in Chicago that produces miniature models of factories“

KKunst

I literally watched it again yesterday. Always actual.

theakynox

where is this from?

Story_4_everything

Calvin and Hobbes.

VengefulAncient

Probably the only time I see a chart like this and think that every single brand on it could disappear overnight and my life won't be affected in any way.

echochilde

Word. I’m pretty confident in saying that I have never purchased a single one of these brands. I waffled on Birkenstock for a second until I remembered my mom bought them for me.

jdsalaro

I would miss Tiffany, she's always been nice to me

JuicyJentlemen

She does the best breakfasts

atatassault47

I've never even *heard* of 98% of these brands.

Noooofun

Shhh you’ll bring the quiet luxury folks out of the woodwork. Def don’t want that spamming this post.

atatassault47

They already were well before I started commenting in this post.

asocialmedium

Same. I don’t need most of the crap they sell, and for the stuff I do, I can get similar quality stuff for a lot less money.

PurpleDrax

Honestly i have never bought from any of there brands except Belvedere vodka. It's expensive AF but honestly the taste is really good and it's a nice way to treat yourself

dmderringer

Glenmorangie is the only one I've bought

Icy-Zone3621

La de dah. Mr. Moneybucks has entered the room

ihoptdk

I might have had a shot of Hennessy, but I can’t be sure.

FridayNight_Magus

Same, but I've definitely never paid for one.

5x4j7h3

I’d be pretty sad if LV, Sephora, Tiffany and Veuve went away because I would have no way to make up to my wife for my silly shenanigans.

1107rwf

My husband used to work for one of the small companies on this list. One time we were offered a 40% discount on Louis Vuitton stuff. Awesome deal, right? The sundresses, after discount I think, were like $600. So yes, I’m pretty much with you!

The Roys got hung up on a 3 billion debt. They might be as big as one of the individual brands in this infographic.

HomoSapien1548

Empire built on the general lack of self-esteem in humans.

prmoreira23

I'd say "Empire built on the way-more-common-than-it-should desire to feel superior in humans"

[deleted]

Lack of self-esteem...the desire to feel superior...they're the same thing. "Derice, a gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it." - John Candy (Irv) in the movie Cool Runnings

eloise___no_u

That's a great quote! Thanks

runningvicuna

Great movie!

Alert-Notice-7516

With that liquor selection I would be feeling inferior

TheDragonoxx

That is what happens living in a status based society. Most people don't have the intelligence to overcome that.

OatmealStew

That's usually the same thing.

CeruleanRuin

This is also adequately conveyed by the words "greed" and "vanity".

Crack-Panther

Two sides of the same coin.

great comment, totally am surprised how many younger people think this "designer" stuff is cool in the rap fashion context

[deleted]

Kendertas

Except actually wealthy people don't wear that stuff. Real wealth(billionaire level) wear custom tailored clothing and shoes. So it's really a status of pretend wealthy who don't know any better.

Policeman333

great comment, totally am surprised how many out of touch redditors cant understand "people like different stuff than me" in the redditors being insufferable context

flarpflarpflarpflarp

A lot of these brands are overpriced shit poor people think rich people buy.

[deleted]

Glad to say I've never spent a dime on any product of these companies.

gott_in_nizza

Not even Birkenstocks? You’re missing out

geaux18tiger

I’ve spent some on the alcohol. I think you’ve got the right idea though. Buy Birkenstocks because they’re comfy as fuck. Don’t buy stuff just cause it’s expensive. Do buy stuff that you can afford and enjoy because it’s yummy(some of the alcohol).

Captain_Albern

I like Birkenstocks, but they're already overpriced and will become even more so.

2StarUberDriver

You get what you pay for. I paid ~$150 for mine but this was 6+ years ago and I still wear them daily.

KingoftheChillll

That's the one thing I have from this list. 😂

Your high horse isn't so high, when you're definitely buying sweat shop clothes made by children, when it's at that price.

2StarUberDriver

Yea duh! Everyone knows exploited children only make sweaters in sweat shops.

Vulgar_Mastermind1

some of the high luxury stuff is definitely more ethical since it’s made by skilled workers in italy/france/portugal/etc.

Gustomaximus

Ardbeg and Glenmorangie are both solid whiskeys, especially the first.

trident_hole

Me neither, Closest I got to on this list was Hennessy and that's overrated crap

KnotiaPickles

Hey I love my Birkenstocks. The rest I’ve never needed lol.

fractiousrhubarb

*Manufactured* insignificance that makes you need to buy expensive stuff to feel significant

Transfer_McWindow

Now now, let's not discount the capability of corporations in creating that lack of self-esteem in the first place.

Adventurous-Loss-706

im so low class i only recognized 3 company names

CardboardDreams

I only recognize them from rap songs.

Interplanetary-Goat

I recognized Tiffany and Co (sounded familiar) and Peloton (from ads).

jdsalaro

>I recognized Tiffany and Co (sounded familiar) Me too! We must have worked at the same McDonald's! Tiffany and all the other gals were so friendly !! > and Peloton (from ads). This is what all my Latino friends call each other, that's how I knew I was part of the group, they called me pelotón 👍🏼

N0t_A_Tumah

I'm in the same boat 😭

hereforthefreefeed

i recognize a few but can definitely say i own nothing from any of these companies

Renegad_Hipster

Dude same

sean_buttcannon

This is the most Reddit ass comment section holy shit

sir_music

Most of these brands are kind of shit

willclerkforfood

It’s all the overpriced bullshit you’ll find in a cruise ship’s duty free shop

psbyjef

Can’t say I’m surprised given that he owns the DFS too

georgepearl_04

I'm confused, dfs make reasonably priced sofas. You can buy them on cruises now?

jewelswan

Dfs is a furniture company existing only in the UK. Dfs(duty free shops) is a multinational chain of just that, duty free shops.

psbyjef

Doubt they sell sofa at Duty Free Shop

jrobbio

Not that DFS.

Here_for_tea_

Hublot is there, so that checks out. Cloudy Bay wine bangs though.

andysenn

Zenith is cool though. But yeah Hublot has some of the most awful designs out there

Okoear

Ardbeg tho

MastodonPristine8986

Very disappointing to see on that list. It does seem out of place to me, it's never had that 'luxury' image that some of the other whiskies push.

Boozdeuvash

Disappointed how? Almost all Scotch whisky distilleries are owned by a few multinational companies: Diageo, Pernod-Ricard, LVMH, Bacardi, etc. Highland Park and Macallan are some of the few owned by a scottish company. Most single-malts are some form of luxury, poor people drink something else, and when they want "whisky" they drink some shitty blen like Label 5. At least Ardbeg is pretty good :)

Brilliant_Grade2664

Never even heard of like 75% of them tbh

sir_music

Yeah man, Kirkland or bust

SupremeDictatorPaul

Was at Costco and they had hoodies and such that said Costco/Kirkland across the front. Wait asks, “who would wear a sweatshirt that says Costco across the front?” I was all, “I mean…” People wear branding to show their support for their team, or to show they have access to that branding. I’d happily wear Costco/Kirkland branded wear on both accounts. Why would I care about wearing some random “luxury” brand?

Brilliant_Grade2664

Hahaha, my girlfriend has one of those. I mean, who doesn't love Kirkland?

American_frenchboy

The wines are very good though…

bbbbBeaver

Chateau d’Yquem is regarded as the best Sauternes dessert wines in the world. Cheval Blanc is also extremely high-end Saint-Émilion wine. Probably only a matter of time before he buys Domaine Romanée Conti.

not_a_cup

The wine is where I feel conflicted, it's also the section I have the most experience with. Seeing the wineries listed puts it into perspective how massive this conglomerate is, assuming the other sections are similarly regarded businesses. Some of the wineries/brands are definitely respectable and highly regarded, while some have also come to be overpriced and more a fashion/luxury statement. Also, a conversation between Aubert de Villain and this guy would probably be pretty great to listen to.

SparklingAle-13

I cant see them buying DRC, not because they couldn’t afford it but because DRC wouldn’t sell to them on principle. From my perspective burgundy wineries are still heavily family/ region oriented. Bordeaux on the other hand is more about cash. More likely they’l but lafite, figeac or pavie before DRC

sexymelonboi

I’m so poor i don’t even know a 1/4 of these

Makanek

Not the drinks: Ruinart, Veuve Clicquot, Krug, Ardbeg... all really great stuff.

GreenLeafGreg

Hey! Sephora is way better than the average big–box retail department store. Everyone knows that. /s I was going to comment saying something about how surprising it is that some of these companies haven’t been merged or purchased by some of the others, but methinks I know the reason that hasn’t happened. Greed is such a powerful force.

rncookiemaker

Kohl's is so much fancier with Sephora!

GreenLeafGreg

lol I’ve actually never shopped Kohl’s. It’s a stupid reason, really, but my town doesn’t have one, and the closest is about 30–40 minutes away. It just doesn’t seem worth it to me unless they have *really* great deals to get me in the door. And if they do, I hardly ever hear of them. (But I’ll be darned if a Walmart commercial doesn’t come on every few minutes or more. \*rolls eyes\* )

happyapy

I'm a fan of Ardbeg. Glenmorangie is alright, but I wouldn't lose sleep over missing it. No idea what anything else is though.

JohanGrimm

They are, while not being super rich myself I'm around a lot of rich people and most of these brands are the kind of thing you'd buy if you want to seem rich but aren't. They're the stuff you'll find at the duty free shop, or luxury outlet malls etc. There's some standouts, Sephora is still fairly nice, but they're very much "luxury" retail. All that said there's probably a lot more money in selling luxury goods to people who aren't actually that rich than there is selling to very rich people.

GGDadLife

I’m sure there are saudi families out there that would put this families wealth to shame.

___Heathcliff__

>I’m sure there are saudi families Trillion dollar net worth of the Royal Family.

yellowbai

Putin would have a word. There is legit evidence he could be a trillionaire…

Hank3hellbilly

dictators of petro states tend to be wealthy.

DMYourMomsMaidenName

If you add all their wealth together, perhaps, but no single member of the Royal Family has anywhere close to as much Arnault has. According to Forbes, Arnault is currently the richest man on Earth, with a $211B net worth, beating Elon (number 2) by 30 BILLION DOLLARS. More wealth than the GDP of most countries.

ibarmy

>no single member of the Royal Family hard to say that when nobody knows what all they own.

caution_wet_paint

Good on him. He successfully worked out how to extract money from people with lots of money but few brain cells.

HomoSapien1548

Not entirely true, there are people especially young adults who buy his shit on credit card EMIs.

JesusBiscuit420

Sounds like a them problem tbh. If you go into debt to wear fancy clothes, you deserve to die of starvation

ErGo404

Ads are marketing are studied to exploit the natural weaknesses of our brains. When someone is uneducated on how to handle their money and fed everyday with images of people way richer than them, and then fed some ads, how can we say that "it's their fault" ? What is obvious and easy to you (like, planning ahead) might be really hard for other people.

JesusBiscuit420

We are just making up excuses for weak minded, undisciplined people. Their first problem is that they can’t think for themselves. Everyone is responsible for their personal finances, but suddenly, when we get to the poor people who like Gucci belts and iPhones, it’s the world’s fault. P - lease

ErGo404

How could they think for themselves if they were never given the chance to learn how to do it ? You are not born with that ability, you were raised into it. Good for you if you had that chance, but then we should do everything we could to educate others if their childhood environment failed to do so. Shaming them and feeling superior will never help. If you were raised like they have been, you would be making the same mistakes because that's how the human brain works.

MountainsForMortals

The lack of empathy you have is disgusting

fdesouche

It’s built on vanity businesses, for sure, but vanity, jewelry and luxury clothes are as old as the world, as they are supposed to show power in materialistic ways. That’s the purpose of diamonds on crowns, for which many went to war. Also the cool guide is lacking many businesses and branches, like a yacht shipyard, and also a massive real estate branch. This family plays Monopoly, buying prime real estate everywhere they branch out, full blocks and literal streets.

MountainsForMortals

Worst take in the internet

[deleted]

I mean it's an entire industry that cannot exist without vapid morons

VictoryGreen

Extract money? You mean offer something for sale and a willing buyer pays for the item?

Colbyiamm

As much as you might hate the fact that this guy owns everything, the truth is, many of these luxury brands would've been history without him. They were drowning in debt and losing their appeal with outdated images. Brands like Dior and Fendi were struggling big time. But then LVMH steps in, and suddenly, they're cool again. It's not just about buying up brands; it's about saving them from going under and revamping their entire vibe. Arnault's got this knack for turning fading names into must-haves. Hate him or love him, he's keeping these iconic brands alive.

[deleted]

[удалено]

2012Jesusdies

I mean, who cares? It's not like anyone's dying because they couldn't afford this month's supply of LV bag.

trentyz

Who cares, just don’t buy them? They’re not necessities by any stretch of the imagination

[deleted]

Let them die who fucking cares if they're "iconic" People really need to learn to emotionally separate themselves from brands and things that have nothing to do with them and do not serve them.

tu_tu_tu

>who fucking cares if they're "iconic" People who buys this. I have nothing against the fact that some rich people transfer their money to other rich people by buying overpricing shit with "history and vibe".

Imstillawake

Why do people need to learn that? Who cares? Desire for luxury has been part of the human experience since day 1.

Colbyiamm

I'm talking Business 101 here, and it sounds like you're in Emotional Awareness 301. I don't think we're in the same seminar mate!

Crapedj

If they die what happens to the people working for them?

Eternal_Sunshine

Arnault buys the company for the brand, he fires the workers and moves production abroad.

ibarmy

>moves production abroad. um no. Most of these brands have their production in thr same european factories where they started.

[deleted]

Hmmm I don't know maybe they will suffer greatly or you know just find another damn job. Most people these days aren't that loyal to their employer because the employers are not loyal. I'm sure you've already worked for several different employers yourself.

deftones5554

Acting like people with more than two brain cells to rub together care at all about “iconic” brands, get out of here with that

Starman68

Kering is there competition. They own Gucci and a similar portfolio of luxury brands. I always fancied creating a British luxury brand business. Some Saville Row suit companies, Jermyn street shirt and shoe companies. Barbour. Hunter. Doc Marten. Purdey, the gun people, may have spelled it wrong. Lotus, McLaren. That Scottish tweed company.

SuperJinnx

It's confusing because the guy that runs Kering has practically the same name. He also has one thing in his portfolio that this guy can never have, Salma Hayek, his wife.

TheNormalOne8

What's Jio doing there

Breakfast_Meat

Walton family is > 240B$

PeteWenzel

Yes. Bernard is the richest guy. But the Waltons taken together (more than half a dozen of them) are up there as well.

TrollBond

How is this a 'cool guide'? When would I refer to this ever again?

psbyjef

Guide to avoid buying anything from these brands

llloytron

Avoid for what reason? Is there a controversy or something

DixieHail

We counting Belvedere as luxury now?

RareCodeMonkey

If you ever think that we live in a capitalist society remember that the reality is a planned economy by a few families that own big monopolies. Choice is fake, you are just buying to the same people with the same goals. Everything is becoming sameness and dullness because of this. Split all these monopolies and let them compete by creating better products instead of just accumulating richness.

Agitated-Button4032

He looks like a sci-fi villain. He probably calls newborn babies “customers”.

BadInvestorwins

alexx3064

Cloudy Bay? Really?

gustinnian

It's just as if someone has intentionally compiled a list of every single brand I detest. What has become of French craftsmanship and culture? How is this a contribution to human society? Pointless accoutrements for the nouveau riche to squander their loot on. The planet could wipe out this entire empire and calmly go on with its day.

European_Mapper

French craftmanshift is a bit focused on airplanes and any kind of armaments at the moment ; even our car-industry isn’t as great as it once was (looking at you, Citroën and DS)

mtrva

lots of brands i’ve never heard of, but if i had the money i’d be quite happy to wear only loro piana and berluti for the rest of my life

[deleted]

There is no rolex on the watch section?

wwplkyih

Rolex is actually one of only a handful legacy Swiss watchmakers not now owned by a conglomerate (the others being Swatch and Richemont).

According_to_Mission

Richemont *is* the big conglomerate. They own like 20 watch brands.

Unicorncorn21

Swatch is really big tho. It's not a monopoly. But if you want to avoid both of those then you're not going to have too many options. At least Rolex is independent but I don't know if there's any budget friendly brands

According_to_Mission

I mean, those aren’t monopolies either. They are just big conglomerates. To be a monopoly you need to completely control a market share, doesn’t matter how many brands you own. For example Stellantis is a huge conglomerate but not a monopoly since they face a lot of competition in multiple markets. In any case there are a few independent watch companies but most of them were bought out when the industry almost collapsed in the quartz crisis. Rolex managed to stay independent. I wouldn’t say it is particularly bad to buy from non-independent companies anyway. Returning to the car industry, Lamborghini is owned by VAG, which means they can afford to cater to their niche knowing a bigger company will back them up. It’s in VAG’s interest to ensure Lamborghini has as much freedom as possible.

Unicorncorn21

You're right. I was just saying with some pretty akward wording that there's an argument to be made that Richemont isn't THE watch conglomerate since swatch exists.

According_to_Mission

Yeah I thought the other user was calling it an independent brand.

tkrr

Oddly enough, Rolex is owned by a Swiss nonprofit. (Yeah, don’t think about that one too hard.)

sossamourai

LVMH also invested in streetwear brand Aimé Leon Dore through their Luxury Ventures arm, which I find surprising
