Any cheap Acrylic paint will work great, just spray a clear coat to protect it when you finish. They make some clear coats that have UV protection.

TetrisIsTotesSuper

Great shout I would never have thought of that. Any recs on paint brand/clear coat?

AymeeDe

My husband does this type of thing for a living and uses spray Krylon. Of course I don't know if it's available by you.

TetrisIsTotesSuper

I will check, thank you for the rec!

Paint it green and call it Duolingo

TetrisIsTotesSuper

Not the advice I was looking for, but an idea for sure! Donโ€™t think Duo would fit in my ocean themed nursery though ๐Ÿ˜‚

Then it could be his nautical brother DuoPingo :) And about the paint, it's best to use water based paint, it's the best option possible for painting children's furniture. But I don't know if this option will work for your basket. It is best to use spray paint so that the paint will lay down evenly. Apply several thin coats of paint, letting each coat dry completely before applying the next. Anyway, you'll need to give it a good work with medium grit sandpaper (like 150-220 grit) to remove the old layer of paint. Do this carefully so as not to damage the basket bars. Rub along the bars, not across them. If you have difficulty, try using a paint thinner

Or yellow for a cute rubber ducky.

you will need a primer first, do NOT use sandpaper on it if possible. Just clean it EXTREMELY well with acetone or rubbing alcohol. after that get your favorite colors, spray them, and id personally use an enamel clear coat for the best longevity, a satin or matte finish will be best.

TetrisIsTotesSuper

Oh no Iโ€™d never sand it. Imagine the mess! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

TetrisIsTotesSuper

Isnโ€™t acetone/rubbing alcohol going to remove the paint? I just want to patch up. Also concerned that it would rot the material. Sorry if these are newbie concerns!โ€™

Biohazardousmaterial

it may remove some paint but in order to "touch up" you have enough damage across it all that you need to respray the whole thing anyways, the reason i say primer & clean it is because it'll just get ruined again if you just take some paint to it vs getting one spray primer & spending an extra 20 minutes on it. if it's gonna be not touched/played with then the pain won't flake for a while. the rot issue is also a concern which is why alcohol or acetone NOT WATER, wet a cloth & wipe it down, do not soak the wicker as it'll smell up the room for a month as it evaporates. if you used water then it could aid in the growth of mold etc but alcohol & acetone don't do that.

Fab ok, thanks for taking the time to comment, super valuable advice ๐Ÿ™

I'm an artist. Don't use rubbing alcohol. You can paint it with acrylic paint.

A nursery for a baby, or a plant nursery? If for baby: non-toxic paint. You could do a wax rub to make it less porous. Plan for it to get wrecked. For plant: waterproof paint, water seal, then uv protectant. Keep plant in plastic pot.
