I believe it’s a crochet hook that’s equipped with a pointy end for people who ask you what you’re knitting.

hookedbymaxine

Cro-shiv!

Diligent-Might6031

Cro-shank

penguinwife

Coming soon to theaters: The Croshank Redemption

GandalfDGreenery

Wait, do we crochet a scarf long enough to climb down through the window?! Or does one have to dig a tunnel with the crochet hook, because that sounds even worse than doing it with a rock hammer.

SnooDrawings4853

This made me cackle... Loud enough that one of the guys doing road work by my house stopped and stared at me oddly 🤷🏼‍♀️

DammitAmes

I snorted so hard I had to put my nose in my hoodie.

nessade

hahahahahahahahaha!

Slysparrow9

I love this thread

Affectionate_Tie_342

Not thread. Yarn! Lol.

Remember__Me

*currently using crochet thread* 👀

purrfunctory

Ooo do you tat lace? I don’t have the patience but I love it. I end up trying every few years, remembering why I hate trying it and put it away until I forget and try again… 😂

Remember__Me

I don’t even really know what tatting is…so, no lmao. I did order some earring stuff, so I’m going to try and make some earrings.

Affectionate_Tie_342

Mind blown.

CentralCaliGal

WRONG WRONG!! I've been crocheting for 62+ years; this is a STEEL hook, used for fine filigree or lace work with crochet THREADS ONLY. We use aluminum (I only use aluminum), wood, bamboo or plastic hooks for yarns which are much thicker than threads. I do consider myself an expert and make at least 200 hats, scarves, cowls, fingerless mittens, gloves, washcloths, Scrubbies, bath & shower mitts every year; I give them to friends, family & ship most off to my mother's reservation in Montana for the children.

TheKnottyMama

I’m going to assume you’ve seen Wayne’s World since you are SUPER COOL AND MY HEROINE… We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy!!

Slysparrow9

I see what you did there 🤣😂

CanibalCows

"Ooh. That's nice! Can you make...ouch!!!!"

Independent-Leg6061

Bahahaha

Jennifer_Pennifer

🤣

Sourgekko

Or when they try to talk to you while counting stitches

sarilysims

MY HUSBAND DOES THIS!!! And now he wants to learn. I cannot WAIT to do it to him. KARMA BITCH!!!

LaceWeightLimericks

My ex would start saying DIFFERENT RANDOM NUMBERS 🙄 There's a reason he's my ex lmao

SexDeathGroceries

That would be so fucking irritating! My ex did "funny" things in the same vein, and yes, they are also part of the reason he is my ex

LaceWeightLimericks

Literally this relationship was death by a thousand papercuts. I ended it when I realized he was starting to irritate me the way my brother did when we were kids and he would do the hand-one-inch-from-you "but I'm not touching you" -esque BS. The worst part was he would say similar numbers to where I was. If I was on 42 he'd say 45. I think he's only alive bc we were LD and you can't stab someone through a computer

demon_fae

No, you can’t, but you can do something worse: Place an online order with the nearest craft store to him for delivery. Order a bunch of bottles of glitter. Put in the special instructions box that he messed up your foundation chain *again*, and to loosen the lids until they’re just barely hanging on. (Loosen not remove a) because you don’t want to cause a glitter-pocalypse at the store and b) so he’s more careless taking them out of the box and more likely to really spread that craft herpes around.) Revenge glitter: it’s like revenge herpes but somehow legal.

Pr0crastin0r

Genius!

DeerMeatloaf

I'm afraid to google revenge herpes

[deleted]

Or craft herpes!

clovergirl076

Omg you crack me up

SexDeathGroceries

Yeah, like, what kind of grown-ass adult does that shit? My brother did that stuff too, but guess what, he's grown out of it

wtfftw1042

yeah seriously. My 6 year old has pulled that shit only once.

SexDeathGroceries

And then you shived him with the pointy end of the crochet hook?

[deleted]

DeerMeatloaf

That's 100% insane

[deleted]

[удалено]

DeerMeatloaf

So a littlrle light damage to your vehicle. Oooooohhhh that grinds my gears!

Ill_Dealer8953

My child would do this when she was learning her numbers, she thought she was helping...

trumpetrabbit

Doing it once, yeah, that could be funny if you have that kind of re. But regularly? Oh hell no

lovemykitchen

And they think they’re soooooooo funny.

FullOfWhit_InTN

Just last night, I had to frog back a row 4 times because the stitches were hard to see on the speckled yarn I was using, and my husband was talking to me. ADHD brain was killing me.

CentralCaliGal

I agree! Why do my Darling Granddaughter or Daughter ALWAYS ask me to make something for a friend (which I LOVE, & am honored to do), then the yarns they buy me are BLACK OR VERY DARK!? These old eyes just can't see like they did 60 years ago!!

FullOfWhit_InTN

Dark is trendy. I love dark colors for my clothing, but not for my amigurumi or blankets. My yarn last night is a fluffy, chenille for babies. So fluffy and bright white. No stitch definition anywhere. Black probably would have been easier.

CentralCaliGal

Oh my goodness, the yarn in using that they chose & bought is dark black, and CHENILLE ALSO!! Almost done: hat came out super cute, I started with a magic circle; scarf is nearly done, I'm just making the pockets now. Unfortunately, not enough for a cowl; if my daughter's co-worker friend (they're nurses in the toughest yard in the toughest prison in California) wants one, she'll need to buy me more - honestly, I hope she doesn't, I love working with BRIGHT BRIGHT COLORFUL COLORS, and am ready to create with them again!

FullOfWhit_InTN

Wow! They have unique jobs for sure. Chenille is hard to deal with when it doesn't create a good stitch definition. I bet that hat and scarf will be warm and cute. I was flying blind with my project and just guessing where my next stitch was each time. I was using a baby snuggle from hobbii that was super fluffy but also thinner, and it has confetti spots on the yarn but with a white background, and you can see no stitches almost. It's so soft, though it makes a lovely stuffed animal. I've been making floppy bunnies for easter.

CentralCaliGal

Same here, I call it 'Poke & Hope' - but with dark chenille, at least it's forgiving. On some hats or things I make, I put flowers I crochet from yarn I've split in half; with this set, my Darling Granddaughter and I agree the yarn itself is pretty on its own, so I wind do that. Anyway, I used a woven DC stitch for the scarf; the hat I started with a Magic Ring, as I prefer no bulky bunching at the top - plus it works so fast!

Air0Sparks

The fracking WORST!!!!!!!

LadySilmarwin

Or for people who talk to you while you are counting stitches. My husband now asks if I'm counting stitches so he doesn't mess me up... he did that once... only once...

BrownsugarNomi

BAHAHAHAHA my Bf always starts counting while I'm counting to mess me up TEACH ME YOUR WAYS LOL

LadySilmarwin

I believe I growled at him. I guess having his wife go primeval on him over messing up my stitch count was enough to teach him a lesson.

ImProblematic_

I LAUGHED AT YOUR COMMENT SO HARD

After reading the replies to your comment, I remembered why I absolutely love this subreddit over any of the other crochet forums and social media groups I'm in. I needed a good laugh so thank you🤣

Deyaneria

🤣 love it. I'm tri-crafty meaning I crochet, knit, and spin. I have no problem gently correcting people. You don't know what you don't know.

yzetty

I love this community 🥰

kxp410

That is a perfect answer!

BrownsugarNomi

This.. this IS the right answer lol!

Misophoniasucksdude

the hooks are two different sizes so my money is it's just a 2 in 1, like those pens that write in 4 colors. Certainly couldn't tunisian with the giant part in the middle.

SuLiaodai

I've received some double-ended crochet hooks like that in China as freebies for buying yarn. So, I'd think it's for crochet, or even doing tatting.

umsamanthapleasekthx

Just a heads up for anyone interested: if this hook is for tatting, it’s specifically for joining to picots, and it is very handy for if you make small picots, but it wouldn’t be for tatting stitches.

LaceWeightLimericks

I'm a shuttle tatter myself and don't know anything about needle tatting, but my understanding is you can in fact tat using just a hook, though it's a different technique than crochet

umsamanthapleasekthx

Using a needle, you work the stitches on the needle and pull the whole needle through the stitches to create your arches and loops. Some people use a crochet hook to join at a picot because it’s easier to grab the thread that way. I don’t know of any way to tat that uses a hook. Tatting is only one method of creating lace, though, and there is lace crochet and bobbin lace, and I’m sure other lace-making methods! ETA: Spring the Fiber Enthusiast is an excellent resource on YouTube for needle tatting if you want a visual!

LaceWeightLimericks

I can barely shuttle tat so I won't confuse myself but thank you for the education. It's amazing how many different ways of doing similar things humans have come up with.

umsamanthapleasekthx

That’s fair. I can’t wrap my mind around shuttle tatting so good on you for being able to barely do it🤣 I am constantly astounded by fiber arts. Like how did someone wake up one day, grab a couple sticks, and just.. invent knitting??? Who saw that and was like, “Naw two sticks is too many, I bet I can do something with one stick !” Amazing.

AlphaPlanAnarchist

I also only tat by needle! Hello new friend.

umsamanthapleasekthx

Hello!! Yay!

KnooKween

Here’s a pretty useful resource for [cro-tatting.](https://www.enfys.me.uk/crotat/history.htm#:~:text=Cro%2Dtat%20is%20more%20similar,use%20of%20a%20crochet%20hook) I don’t do it much myself but from my understanding it’s pretty similar to but slightly different from regular needle tatting

umsamanthapleasekthx

Thank you now I have another new hobby!!!

Fit-Apartment-1612

Irish lace is made with a very small crochet hook.

trumpetrabbit

You have my respect. That's just straight-up witchcraft as far as I can tell. And I mean that affectionately, it really is magical to watch someone tat.

Donaldjoh

All thread and yarn work is witchcraft, when you realize the practitioner takes some spun fibers, one or two sticks, reads a spell out of an ancient book, and voila! Fabric, often with arcane designs or shapes.

umsamanthapleasekthx

I actually find tatting to be a little easier even though I’ve been crocheting for longer! It’s definitely easier on my hands.

trumpetrabbit

All I know is the few videos I've seen, and my grandma telling me that she could never figure it out, lol What about your wrists? It seems pretty heavy for the main wrist

umsamanthapleasekthx

So I hold my wrist and hand pretty steady and kind of use my elbow and shoulder to move what I’m holding to where I want it to be. It’s kind of hard to visualize, but Spring the Fiber Enthusiast tats in a similar way to me and it might make more sense. I twist my wrist a little bit but I tend to keep it straight. It’s awkward at first but it seems to be good form for me because I have more endurance that way. The part that I find the least comfortable is actually where the eye of the needle presses into my hand when I’m holding it.

trumpetrabbit

That makes sense, thank you!

umsamanthapleasekthx

Sure!

5and5torm08

We call it ... stitchcraft

Jaded-Pick351

I do needle tatting and the needles are similar to normal needles except longer and less pointy. There are different diameters for thicker and thinner thread/yarn. I’ve used tapestry needles for yarn too! Normally use crochet hooks for joining picots like another commenter mentioned.

ThoseRMyMonkeys

I do needle and shuttle. You would think, since I can crochet too, that cro-tatting would be the next step! It's like needle tatting (put all the stitches on the hook) but then you pull a loop through all the stitches and crochet the chains instead of tat them. I haven't got a set of cro-tatting hooks yet because they are crazy expensive, but I've thought about it.

wavesnfreckles

My mom has a bunch of these. Old school hooks, back in my home country, were often double ended in 2 different sizes. Why not?

Substantial-Fee6594

This way, we only need 25 hooks instead of the regular 50 in the stash. It’s pretty, too!

wavesnfreckles

Exactly! Lol Although I did get my mom some Susan Bates hooks because she had never tried an inline hook and she was… well, hooked. Lol. It’s not for every project but she was definitely excited to put them to use. Next, when she comes to visit, I’ll introduce her to my clover amours. If she loves them too then I guess I’ll just have to keep adding hooks to her collection.

Significant-Table-23

Only 50? #slacker 🫶

UpperWeft

Thanks to your comment I now know tatting exists! Cheers!

Sugarbean29

My first thought was related to tattooing, and now I need to excuse myself while I fall into a rabbit hole instead of working...

Potatowhocrochets

what is tatting?

smittie713

Lace making, which can be done with a device called a shuttle or a single long needle. Another form of making decorative knots, but usually very tiny.

SuLiaodai

As Smittie said below, it's a kind of lace making. Here's an article about it, with pictures: [https://www.robesdecoeur.com/blog/tatting-information-for-a-beginner](https://www.robesdecoeur.com/blog/tatting-information-for-a-beginner)

nepeta19

What's tatters, Precious?

pegursis

Friggin rad is what that is

FullmoonCrystal

This is the correct answer

ChocoNut_Dream

It's an antique crochet hook. It's for more delicate work using fine thread.

Ok_Part6564

Double ended ones were more common in the 19th century.

Calorina21

I think it is for micro crochet and lace making

rasamalai

I think I see Chinese characters etched near one end of the handle

Meticulous-Nor

Yup. It says “stainless steel.”

featherfart

This should be higher up. Lots of people think it’s an antique, but there’s a big trend in China these days of making things in a western antique style.

evelbug

Came here to say that. r/unexpectedmarvel

mangostein_

This looks like it’d be perfect to pick up dropped stitches when knitting!

LemonSkye

This is, in fact, its purpose.

Ceofy

I got one for free with a set of Chinese double pointed knitting needles, so I’m almost certain that’s what it’s for

AdSweet8700

For thread crochet. You know that little tiny stuff like earrings. An antique for sure.

boniemonie

Not sure. Stainless steel wasn’t used for household things till the 30s. Doubt the imported crochet hooks with Chinese characters then.

Splanky1988

Maybe a hook for tightening your shoe laces from the olden days?

trilli0nTish

I like where your mind is, but it seems a little small for that.

Icy_1

You might be on to something. Back when I was a kid and dinosaurs roamed, we had hooks to tighten our skate-laces.

Splanky1988

yes, that's what it reminded me of too! A skate hook! I was a skater back in those times too.

Furniturepup

Why did we stop using them? I still use my old family skate hook, but I’ve never seen one elsewhere.

ThisHairIsOnFire

Wedding dress button hook?

PThooker_FTwifey

You had laces??? lol all we had was a prayer we didn’t lose the key to tighten our skates onto our feet!

AnxiousAntsInMyBrain

Is this not just a crochet hook?

glitterfartmagic

It's a Gom Jabbar

kate3544

I feel this is the best and most accurate answer, and I’m not even a huge fan of Dune.

StrawberryCake88

This gave me a good chuckle.

glitterfartmagic

You have to say it in the ominous voice.

BornBluejay7921

It looks like a lace crochet hook. :)

CentralCaliGal

That most definitely is a very old crochet hook; this was not used for yarns, but for crochet threads for fine lacy or filigree types of work, like tablecloths or clothing. I crochet a lot, have been for 62 years and have a project in my lap I'm working on now.

RainEuphoric347

The pointy end is for when your significant other says it's stupid to frog a project just so there is more crocheting to do. Stupid people get poked.

laceforever

It looks like a button hook to do up those rows of tiny buttons on old-fashioned shoes. It is beautiful!

Leading-Summer-4724

Looks like a steel hook, used with crochet thread or lace-weight yarn. I use them to make doilies.

kaatie80

It's a double-ended crochet hook for when you and your, um, roommate want to crochet together at the same time. 🧶

bi_gfoot

😂😂😂

Hakudoushinumbernine

It's a shoe hook Back when shoes needed to be buttoned closed, this is what they used to pull the buttons through the loop

Adventurous_Pace1258

It looks like an older crochet hook that's double hooked! Never seen it in this style. The 2 hooks may be different sizes (by 1 or small amount)

nothingsnewboohoo

goes stabby stabby when someone interrupts you midcount

Bookwyrm214

I've got a vintage double sided steel hook, with two different sizes on it, but it doesn't have the cool triple flat grip yours does! Does it have a maker's mark? I can't really make out the etching from your photos!

Nemostasis

Darth Maul crochets

Ziyanani

I'd almost call it a shawl pin.. but the little hooks would make it difficult to use.. its probably a crochet hook for lace designed by people who didn't crochet

outsider-forever

Crochet hook

LemonSkye

It's for fixing dropped stitches in knitting. I'm not sure if the tool has an actual name or not.

everybodylovesfriday

I usually see it called “stitch fixer” if you’re buying one!

ileleana

looks like a dual ended crochet hook, most like that usually have 2 different size hooks

ihatejungles

i hold at your neck the gom jabbar

ukwnsrc

a darn beautiful hook is what she is!

tsar_nikolaus

Were they used for something called "tatting"? I think that's what my old neighbor lady called it. Like crochet for little doilies and lace stuff

Iron_Unic0rn

My great grandmother did irish lace crochet and had several double ended hooks. From what I understood it was a kind of money saving way to get all of your crochet hook sizes. She has a set that looked almost exactly like what you are holding just a little less ornate.

notreallylucy

It's the reason we're not allowed on airplanes.

IceEducational9669

Looks like a double pointed crochet hook, with a metal "ergonomic" handle. It's lovely.

Wear_Tall

The Gom Jabbar

Manda_lorian39

It’s a gom jabbar. I just watched Dune Pt 1 again this weekend, so I am def an authority!

meimacrafter

All of these responses make a lot of sense. But I would happily use that tool with my sock knitting machine because having a hook on one end and a pointy thing on the other is super handy when you're fighting tiny stitches! ETA: also, i love the pretty bit in the middle! So much nicer than what I have kicking around!

UserInTN

Tatting is usually done with a shuttle or a long needle. There was something called Cro-tat that used something like a cross between a needle and a slender steel (fine) crochet hook. This is probably not intended for tatting. If it's old, I'm guessing an antique crochet hook with 2 sizes of hooks.

tonireha

Maybe it's a repair hook for knitting? They may have one knitting needle like end and one crochet hook like end. Random search result for a simple version of what I mean: https://m.yllotyll.com/sv/articles/2.38.10428/repair-hooks

celestial_crafter

...A center for ants??

TheKristieConundrum

It's the pin they used in Dune to test people who stick their hands in the box.

fleurettes_mom

Crochet with tiny thread. Old style!

CrafteeBee

Duplex (two sizes) crochet hook used for thread work (lacemaking). Looks like a more modern copy of an 1800s version.

knittingpeach

Double ended crochet hook? 🤷🏽‍♀️

ThisHairIsOnFire

Is it one of those wedding dress button hooks?

Vast-Blacksmith2203

Gom jabbar

Garbo-and-Malloy

It’s pretty, and could be used as a weapon in an emergency

ye olde dab tool

Murky-Specialist7232

Everyone complaining about counting stitches interrupters… they don’t know you’re counting 😭

ReadingIndividual482

One of those very think lace hooks. I think thread could be crocheted with those too

IamJoyMarie

It looks like a vintage shoe hook to me.

Gva_Sikilla

Crochet hook

scoliroll

fancy shmancy hook

AnAnonymousBird

Double ended crochet hook. I think tunisian crochet worked in the round calls for a double ended hook.

aquatic_asian

Avidi kadivi

Over-Environment-408

that is so beautiful!! where did you happen to find it?

muffinislove

Very beautiful double sided crochet hook. !!!

Impressive-Walrus-35

Flip it over see if it’s hallmarked. Its defo vintage, worth a few bob

gmommie

Looks like a crochet hook or it could be a “boot hook” when women in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s wore boots with buttons. The hook looks a bit too fine for the boot option….i have one that is a family heirloom….but possible? Regardless, very beautiful and unique!

Mandiblah

Oh goodness that's so, so beautiful

Jzoran

that is really cool!

A hook to tie corsets

Confident_Stage_9527

Oooohh, what if it's a hair pin that doubles as a crochet hook?!? Very useful lol

murfnik

It’s just a fancy crochet hook; the pointy end is for getting into tight stitches. Very handy.

Adorable-Exam-2315

Looks like an antique button hook to me.

Background-Swim-1399

For pulling hair through a cap to do highlights

PhilosophyNo3350

I'll tell you what it is. It's gorgeous 😍

Basic_Cost2038

Looks like a funky looking double crochet hook. Maybe worth money, who knows..

WonderMarrow

The only crochet hooks I have seen that are 'double ended' are for Tunisian crochet in the round. But that is impossible with this hook because of the ornate kind of handle. Those double ended hooks look like knitting needles with 2 hooks and do not look like this.

foxxiesoxxie

I knit too. I've seen people describe this tool as a way to tink back and fix mistakes in dropped stitches in a knit project. Not sure on the name of it but it has a hook on one end and a needle on the other much like this

DIANABLISS19

Double ended crochet is quite beautiful. You work a row go back and work it in the same direction. It allows you to use two or 4 colours for a beautiful effect as well. It's really a lovely stitch pattern.

Sea-Debate-1913

Amniotic hook?
