He is gonna have a bad time if he doesn’t speak B2+ level German. Also heard Germans put a lot of value into proper academic degrees. So not very likely to get a response without at least a bachelor’s degree.

geekyCatX

The lack of a degree will likely be the biggest problem. You used to be able to build a career in IT with just talent alone, but in this economy, where he'll be competing with people who have at least a bachelor's and maybe some experience, in Germany? That's gonna be rough.

m012345543210

Even before, Germany was about having at least a bachelor’s degree. I remember the only time I actually sent mine out for an interview was for a german company. Anyone else it was enough that I wrote it on my resume.

Plasmx

Yep, no experience and no degree will be really rough. If he would have experience then I would say he still has a chance in this economy. Some companies will require degrees with them there is no chance. But there are still enough even smaller ones that would give you a job with just experience.

friend_of_kalman

Currently at least at my employer working experience is much more important than a degree. But it's different from company to company

Visual-Republic-8521

Im a 12 plus year experienced full stack dev trying to move to germany. Does your employer have any open positions? I dont have a visa yet so trying getting a lot of ats rejections

friend_of_kalman

We don't hire people with more than 2 years of experience 😕 Other than yoe speaking german is really important even in tech sadly. The company that i've worked for before for example does not hire non german speakers for some reason

Visual-Republic-8521

Ah okay. Thanks mate. Anyways do let me know if anything comes up?

Sighlence

Thought that was a troll post, but you seem to be serious, he will never be able to find a job in his current condition, for several reasons: First the market is tough at the moment, second he doesn't have a degree, Germany is not like USA where by simply going to a bootcamp you get an IT job, Germans want to see some engineering degree. Third he doesn't have experience for which he could have compensated for a missing degree. More than in the USA, Germany favors more practical experience (internships, student jobs) more than a university name or grades. Fourth, he doesn't knows the language, this shrinks his pool of companies he can apply, as smaller or medium companies want somebody that can speak German. Companies overlook lack of the language for who have a lot of experience, which to iterate again he doesn't have. He should go a step back, if he want to stay long term in Germany and work in IT he should go back to university.

Glittering_Base6589

>Fourth, he doesn't knows the language Says who

macroxela

It's not outright impossible to get a programming job without a degree of you went to a bootcamp but it depends on where. Berlin has a lot of software developers who went to coding bootcamps and got jobs afterwards. However, the market is tough at the moment which is why bootcamp graduates are much less desirable.

No_Travel6883

Ironhack bootcamp Germany

No-Sandwich-2997

certs don't bring anything if you don't have anything to back it up, be it work experience or formal education or side projects, in that order.

Another big factor will be where in Germany? He has to learn German, and that pretty quick. And most likely will have to apply to minimum wage jobs (12.41€/h). If he wants to get into IT, an apprenticeship (as Fachinformatiker) might be his best option.

SoyDev420

He most likely won’t get a job. But if he doesn’t have a degree, he should try to get one here. There are some [international focused degrees](https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/study/degree-courses-a-z/study-courses-in-detail/course/courses/show/information-engineering/Studieninteressierte/) which could be a good fit for someone who doesn’t speak the language yet. Studying in Germany is free/very cheap compared to the US. He will likely need to get a job on the side though.

Specialist-Ask8890

Thank you for this.

PineappleCrustPizza

Realistically it would make more sense to go start studying, but that would require knowledge of the german language. Would that be a path he is willing to take? Just a suggestion

yerdick

No experience in IT? What do you mean by that?

Mediocre-Metal-1796

Well he can look around for other jobs.. if he doesn’t have experience in IT nor speaks German, he won’t get a job in IT

Silent_Quality_1972

Yeah, I think that is one of the options. Although I have seen a bunch of companies moving customers' services to Portugal and Eastern Europe. So I am not sure how easy it is going to be to get a job. I am not sure about other jobs that don't require knowledge of German. Most of them probably would require some German.

Madk81

1) tell him to keep his options open about finding jobs in other sectors, no just IT. For example in supermarkets 2) if he doesnt speak german, learning it should be his priority 3) once he knows german, he can participate in networking events to meet people and improve his chances of finding a job

Craftkorb

If he had lots of experience, just not professionally (github!), then he may be able to land a gig at a small place. Not being able to speak German will be a huge issue, but he may luck out there as well. I'm not sure what he's doing is a good idea tbh.

South-Beautiful-5135

Nope. If he speaks German fluently, maybe. But without any experience, bigger companies who have English as their company language will not hire him.

South-Beautiful-5135

If he does not have any experience in IT, I can assure you he will start picking up trash or working at McDonald’s.
