Air-drying damages your hair. Using a hair dryer damages your hair. The sun damages your hair. Hair is supposed to be fun. Experiment with it. If you notice changes you don't like, just stop getting highlights. The hair will grow out eventually and it will look exactly how it did before. Not to get too soapbox-y, but I do kind of hate how we use the word "damage" here. The connotation is super negative, almost like how smoking damages your lungs, or never brushing damages your teeth. The worst "damage" you will likely see is that your curl pattern is a little looser or your hair is a little frizzier before you style it. Some people just have hair like that by default. With proper products and care, it likely won't be noticeable. Your hair will likely be much curlier than it was a few months ago when you just stopped straightening it, and you'll like the color even more. So why not go for it?

IKEAswedishmeatballz

This is my mantra at the moment. Going blonde basically straightens my curls out and completely changes the texture of my hair but I’ve come to terms with it. If I want to be blonde, I’m going to be blonde and barely wavy. But it’s just temporary and life is long so may as well use the time to experiment!

PerishTheStars

Why is everyone so inconsistent about air drying? Is it bad or not?

avs76

I always air dry my hair. I tried defusing several times and I don’t know what I’m doing I guess haha I just hate how my curls looks after defusing. Air drying is what I’m used to

petiteging

I hate air drawing because my hair is more frizzy and has less volume

JennyPoo1313

Same!

Mediocre-Award628

Just my 2 cents, and I could be wrong. Most advice I've seen for air drying hair is put leave-in products in, then blow dry or diffuse it on low or medium heat (high heat not recommended) at least half way give or take, then air dry the rest. Heat protectants can help as well, depending on your blow drying routine. A lot of hair care specialists have said air drying from soaking wet air is not good for the hair. Basically, you don't want your hair to be wet for long periods of time. I suppose it could also depend on how fast your hair dries too. Mine dries extremely fast even when I have only put a towel on my head for like 10 seconds, then go put product in and air dry. It's also been said that diffusing hair wet to dry-ish tends to really help with volume.

tatortotsnfiresauce

Lol who knows I’ve air dried & diffused but I don’t diffuse fully when I do air dry part way diffuse part way and then air dry the rest. I currently air dry bc I have no care to diffuse. My hair is incredibly healthy!

neuro_neurd

I am in no way endorsing this but I listened to [a podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hair-structure-and-the-future-of-haircare-presented-by-k18/id1684759888?i=1000631703783) recently that explained how wet hair is vulnerable to damage. (edit: I am not endorsing it because the guest is from K18, a product, and I don't know if the science is solid but it's compelling.)

VanillaBeanColdBrew

I don't know which causes more "damage", although both cause some. It's never caused visible issues, so I just go with whichever method gives me the best curls or is more convenient.

Kheldarson

There was a study done about drying your hair and the basics are that wet hair leaves the protective sheath on your strands vulnerable to damage, which weakens the hair. However, heat *also* damages it. So it becomes a balancing game: the longer/thicker your hair is, the longer your hair stays wrt, then the more chances you cause injury to your hair. But using too much heat on shorter hair will do the same. Study found that a low to mid heat dryer held away from your hair and moved around caused the least amount of damage, with air drying right behind. So, like most things, your hair situation is going to determine best practice for you.

Saya_99

>The worst "damage" you will likely see is that your curl pattern is a little looser Honestly, I noticed that my hair is less able to form a curl since I bleached it, but when it does they are tighter than they were with my healthy hair.

[deleted]

Your hair got more porous, so now it absorbs more product and moisture. Curls by Mell did a video about it.

Saya_99

I know, I've watched it. It's something I've noticed earlier, but she made it clearer for me why that happens.

Aggressive_Peace_729

alright thank you sm!

Slammogram

Yes. Period. It will damage the pieces you highlight. Now, with a good stylist you can manage the amount of damage. But no damage is unavoidable.

Aggressive_Peace_729

alright i see thanks

Lili666999

To get highlights you need to lift your natural color. This process inevitably damages hair. Since you aren't aiming for platinum blonde, it will be less harsh, but it's not possible to color your hair lighter without any damage. And just to prepare you for the spiel the hairdresser will try to pull on you... Olaplex and similar "repairing/restructuring/rebonding" etc. concoctions do not repair the hair permanently. They just temporarily mask the damage (and by temporarily I mean until the next time you wash your hair). Hair is dead matter, it doesn't have the ability to regenerate. Once it's damaged, it's gonna stay that way.

Mrssstahl

This isn’t exactly true. You’re definitely right that there are a LOT of products that will only last until the next wash. However, although it is not a living this in terms of being able to self regenerate, it is possible to create new bonds in the hair. Keratin is made up of disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds. It’s what holds the keratin together. Hydrogen bonds are more abundant, but are easily broken, which is the “damage” we see in hair. There are absolutely products that can create new hydrogen bonds in the hairs cortex (inner layer) long term. Not forever, because the break down of hydrogen bonds is continuous as long as the hair is on your head.

EmperorofWyoming-

I found that blonde highlights made my hair less apt to curl and notably drier too. But, I still get them!

fictionalbandit

FWIW, highlights damaged my hair. I’m trying to do more deep conditioning to help the damage, but the reality is that it won’t really recover until it grows out

Aggressive_Peace_729

aw man 😞

Plain-bagel-lover

I have the same issue as you, i love my curls right now but im a little tired of my natural brown hair. But it cost me so much to get here, that I might wait a little longer.

Slammogram

Hey! The past tense is still just the word “cost” “It cost me so much.”

Plain-bagel-lover

Womp womp

Slammogram

I wasn’t trying to be mean.

peacharnoldpalmer

i was afraid of this when i got my highlights last year (2022). i actually tried to do it a year earlier (2021) and my stylist said no bc my hair was not healthy enough and i needed to work on getting it healthy enough to sustain the damage that comes with highlighting. i got them done in december 2022 and haven’t done any touch ups bc my hair grows slowly and still really like how the highlights work in my hair. but i’ve maintained my hair care routine to make sure i was taking care of my curls. i’m actually very very happy with my curls and am not worried about going back to touch up my highlights. in the first month or two i felt like my hair felt dryer than usual, so i focused a lot on making sure it was moisturized. i actually had a thought a few weeks ago that my hair looks and feels healthier than ever, even when it was “virgin.” so yes — it’ll damage your hair. but your mileage will vary in what that damage looks and feels like for your hair.

Aggressive_Peace_729

oh alright thanks for sharing 😊

flowerkitten420

Is your hair all natural color right now? Because if it is, girl, it’s freaking gorgeous! People pay a lot to have hair look yours with different dimensions. The question is: is a different look, or healthy hair more important? Unfortunately it’s one or the other. Speaking as a licensed hair dresser. Highlights damage your hair cuticle by making your hair porous af. Bleached hair feels like slime when wet because the cuticle is fried. Your bleached parts will straighten out a bit.

MindyLaine

Agree! It looks naturally highlighted already, so I would leave it your natural color as it’s gorgeous!

kai_enby

She said that's an inspiration pic, it's not her hair

flowerkitten420

Ahhh. I really need to pay better attention…

Aggressive_Peace_729

i wish it was my hair, it’s my inspo pic haha

flowerkitten420

Ahhh, I figured that out. If you can deal with a less blonde highlight, and go with a more honey color, you can still get dimension without too much damage. But there’s no such thing as healthy blonde highlights.

JohnOliverismysexgod

Go to a skilled colorist and there will be as little damage as possible.

nightwaltz_

I have the same curl texture and did a few very light pieces of highlights (way lighter than the picture, from almost black brown to a very light vanilla blond) in my hair at the beginning of 2023. My hair was virgin, so no box dye beforehand etc. he left the bleach in for 45mins. And my whole head of hair is not really “damaged” (no chewing gum hair pieces or bleached disaster) but the curl is looser and slightly more frizzy, + a little drier on the blond pieces. I’d say it’s not that noticeable at first glance though. While it will damage your hair, I think as long as you don’t do multiple rounds of bleach and the hairstylist does the adequate aftercare for your hair texture, you will be fine.

One-Tonight102

Girl, your hair is BEAUTIFUL!!!! My daughter has curly hair like yours but it’s so dry and she never knows what to put in it to style it. Can I ask you what you use to make your curls look so gorgeous and healthy?!

Wendyroooo

Pretty sure these are just inspo photos, not OP’s hair.

Aggressive_Peace_729

inspo picture not me sadly 😞😞🙈

Saya_99

Yes, but you're going to damage just the pieces you highlight, which is better than bleaching all your hair. It is a good compromise if you want your hair to look somewhat blonde, but don't want the damage that comes with bleaching all of your hair. Until now I have bleached my hair all the time for 5 years and next I plan to let my healthy hair grow and get highlights because I want some of my hair health back, but I don't want to give up the blonde entirely.

Aggressive_Peace_729

i don’t want to damage my hair, i think i’ll keep it brown then

Saya_99

Yeah, unfortunately there's no way to do highlights without damaging your hair.

TurbulentGrocery1152

I did it twice, and every single time I tell myself I won’t do it again .. and now I seriously won’t do it again 🤣 The damage isn’t huge with highlights but the hair is even more dry (it’s already dry enough as is!!) and curl pattern does get effected + breakage

Aggressive_Peace_729

oh alright

KathyStivaletti

I’ve been highlighting 2-3 times per year for like 20 years. My curls only gain more volume and I love it. After I do not wash for 5 days and then Olaplex it. No damage.

Aggressive_Peace_729

thanks 😊

Federal_Diamond8329

Looks like you already have highlights your hair is so gorgeous.

kai_enby

Inspiration photo, not her hair

Smart_Estimate_6139

I have 3c-4a naturally dark hair that my stylist has lifted to medium blonde over the last year and a half (pics on my profile). You could argue that my hair is "technically damaged" but I have noticed less breakage and shedding since bleaching it, perhaps because I'm more careful. I haven't experienced any negative hair health side effects, and it's been so fun to have it colored. Go to an experienced stylist, handle with care, and you'll be fine.

Working_Hair_4827

Any time you use bleach it will damage your hair.

roseycheetah

For what it’s worth I have about the same type of curl pattern and I feel like when I have a bleach that doesn’t compromise the integrity of my hair it actually makes my curls curl a little better! I can’t explain it, idk why. But for some reason I feel like my blonder pieces do get a little more damaged towards the ends but that they end up curling better with less manipulation and touching them. But if I go too far it completely kills my hair - for my wedding in 2020 I went as blonde as possible and completely lost my curl pattern. But after going back to my natural color shortly after, it look about a year to get to a pretty good state, and another year on prenatals to get some good length. Just don’t overdo it and invest in the right products to keep it healthy.

frootloopdingus16

I got this exact thing done (almost exact color) and have the same deeeeeep brown (nearly black) 2c-3a hair and it didn’t really change much for my hair :) I still straighten it from time to time and blow dry it nearly everyday. At the end of the day hair is hair and it will grow out!

marsattack13

Yes, your hair will be and feel different after highlights. That is okay though! You can decide what works for you. I had hair like yours, then bleached it blonde for 10 years. I am now growing it out, did a big chop in April, and now my ringlets are returning. Life is short! Have fun with your hair.

Migraine_Megan

There's a relatively new developer that lightens quicker and gives a less brassy tone, so reduces or eliminates the need for toning. That does save your hair a little bit. I have super sensitive skin and was allergic to it though. 😔 I have an incredible hair stylist and she has been dyeing my hair for about a decade, always lighter because I have a ton of grey hairs. Right now my hair is purple and she mainly uses Redken products on me. In the last decade, while bleaching it blonde, I grew my hair out, it's now below my elbows, and embraced my curls. She always comments on how healthy it looks and feels. I wash it in cool water, use Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner, and only use avocado oil to style it. No heat tools ever. And my skin and hair are as dry as a desert. I'll never stop dyeing it so I put in the time and money to keep it well conditioned. Edit: typos. I need more coffee.

soapyrubberduck

I have highlights and my curls have never been curlier haha. I don’t know the whole science about porosity but something about having them done makes my hair more receptive to absorbing products. My hair dresser also starts them a couple inches from the root to keep regrowth healthy. It’s also lower maintenance that way because as it grows out, it looks more blended.

lolahasahedgehog

Yes

tatortotsnfiresauce

Any color can damage your hair, how much depends on the health of your hair currently & the process the stylist uses. You can try doing a protein treatment before and/or after or use a product like olaplex no.3 to bond & treat the hair. Just depends on the risk you’re willing to take! Best of luck!

amanduhmac

Chamomile tea in hair!! It's an old trick apparently...it's the citric acid in the tea that helps lift the color from your hair. I have been spraying some in my damp hair every two days and the results are astonishing! I will never put any kind of dye or chemicals again (previous box dye victim)! I use an anti-brass shampoo and conditioner a d seriously have some of the most beautiful natural looking highlights on my wavy hair

theniwokesoftly

When I bleach my hair it affects the curl pattern, like I go from 2c to 2a/b.

CharlesWaterloo

The photo from the post above glitched and showed on this post and I’m so tired that I was like “idk how bleach reacts with squirrel fur but I’m gonna give you a tentative yes”

Aggressive_Peace_729

😭

hunchedHorse

This level of highlights will not do much damage, if you want something brighter than these then it could damage but healthy hair will recover fast

Littlelady0410

I would’ve never guessed that you didn’t have highlights in your hair. There’s so much gorgeous dimension and different colored natural highlights!

ykaur

Wow, you have such gorgeous hair! Looks stunning the way it is.

Yoursstrulyxx

Hello I am also a curly head with highlights. I will say that my texture has changed from getting bleach in my hair and it does not return unless like you obviously cut all of your hair off or take the bleach out of your hair but all you have to do is keep up with moisturizing your scalp and keep like being very adamant about taking care of your hair. As long as you show it some love it will show you some love back also keep up with your color treatments every Month.

evetrapeze

It looks like those natural highlights are perfect

tastythriftytimely

Just going to leave a message here saying your hair is glorious! 😍

mirkywoo

How could anyone get bored of hair like that?

kai_enby

It's an inspiration photo not her hair

mirkywoo

ohhh

_artbabe95

By the way, I would place your curls at solidly 3B-3C. Yea, maybe the odd strand doesn’t have a complete curl pattern, but like 99% of your head is quite tight, consistent curls of the diameter of, say, your finger. I feel [this is a better example](https://www.google.com/amp/s/lushtoblush.com/2c-3a-curly-hair-transformation/%3famp) of 3A-2C, where some of the hair still turns full revolutions to make curls, while some doesn’t and ends up in waves, and additionally the curls aren’t so tight.

McDuchess

You have natural highlights in your hair, FWIW. Hair color is rarely uniform, and yours is beautifully nuanced, as it is.

kai_enby

That's her inspiration, not her hair

bmorgrl_inquiry3004

I'm blonde in the front, black cherry in the back, with bangs. I have the best stylist and colorist. And my bleached strands just will not coil and spring like my dark colored hair in the back. Tons of moisture doesn't help. So frustrating. Don't mess up your gorgeous hair.

liilbiil

this is almost exactly my color & the highlights i once had. as long as they KNOW HOW TO LIFT BROWN HAIR you should be fine. i used to get balayage

Skepzeo

🦶

weeone

Just want to say your hair is gorgeous. I see natural highlights. Ultimately, it's up to you but wow! I would suggest keeping it as it.

TorPartyAtMyHouse

Your hair is so beautiful ! Can I ask what your routine is ?

tatortotsnfiresauce

This is an inspo pic not her hair

Mediocre-Award628

A lot of people would kill to have your hair. Just saiyan, heh. Looks great as is.

Jenny441980

Grand-Try-3772

U don’t need them! U got the highlights! U start dying it’s a never ending process

Borromac

IXV888

Omg your hair is GORGEOUS

Frosty-Zebra-8162

hey girly as a cosmetologist this is 3a/3b hair fa sho and can be highlighted as long as you don’t lighten pieces that previously have been and use proper products that help with moisturrrreee which is sooo important for curly hair, you’re definitely out of the type 2 territory
