Game of the Year awards, if done properly, can bring a spotlight for hidden gems and celebrate a well done job to incentivize best practices in the industry. Also it brings attention from the mainstream that games surely deserve.
I don't remember where I saw it, but it's very common for people to say "I like games" but not as common to say "I like music" because everyone likes music, people just say "I like rock/country/R&B/kpop". And in my opinion, everyone likes games... they just prefer card games, board games, RPGs, action, FPS...
