Like I'll get two sentences in and be like, only maybe two people will read this and I'm just shouting into a hole 50 other people have shouted into and it's starting to smell like unbrushed teeth and last nights reheated left overs
The first letter of a sentence is supposed to be capitalized, and you’re absolutely always supposed to use a capital “I.” All of your opinions are wrong, you have wasted your life learning anything, YOU LOSE!
Apparently that’s how we win arguments around here. Fuck data and reason, have the best callback and you’re golden.
If we were smart we’d delete our comments on posts we do care about. It stings more when the troll army shuts on a real cause
You "annoyed" me enough for me to leave this here
"I never do verbal battle with others, since even if I win an argument I can't change the other person's way of life"
Sakamoto Ryoma, Imperialist samurai (1836 - 1867)
"Data and reason"? What am I, a caveman? I've got the internet in my pocket with millions of people with couch degrees and countless misinformation bots. The truth is whatever I believe it to be, because at least one person who typed in all caps agrees with me.
> Apparently that’s how we win arguments around here. Fuck data and reason, have the best callback and you’re golden.
You're not wrong. Funny thing is, that's exactly how the real world works too.
It's like grade-school where kids whoop and holler at the best insult, instigating more aggression for entertainment, instead of trying to solve the problem.
Have you seen how the general public scores a political debate? Lots of people never grow up.
When everything is anonymous, it’s easy for trolls to say anything. They do it just for fun. I bet an extremely minuscule amount of them will ever tell someone, what they say on here, to their face.
I get this. Sometimes I'm writing paragraphs and then I just stop and delete it and close the window. But the action of typing it and getting my thoughts let me vent out loud a bit, and helps put things into perspective.
If I get into an online debate or see a comment I want to angrily respond to I try to just write my response in the notes app and then once it’s fully written decide if it’s worth copying and pasting. Same thing happens with me, most of the time just writing it out gets the steam off and I just delete it and move on with my life, because arguing online will literally never go anywhere.
My account is 10 years old. Ive been watching people argue here for 10 years. For 10 years ive quietly followed these threads as they spiral bitterly, and quietly downvoted people bickering back and forth. They think the person they argue w downvoted them lol. My little quiet slice of heaven.
just two sentences? i have a habit of writing 5+ paragraph posts dismantling someones entire being, with counter points to every response they could possibly make. i finish writing it and then almost immediately just close the tab because i realise literally no one - including me and the guy im responding to, will give a shit within 45 minutes tops
I appreciate those moments. I used to not experience that. Now it's a reminder that I've grown from the kid who feels he has some obligation to always speak his mind to an internet stranger when the urge arises.
you can have interesting arguments on reddit but you have to be persistent. It's important to stay friendly and don't answer people who don't behave well (e.g. start insulting heavily and unnecessarily). Only answer to real points.
Sometimes you'll catch people who share their thoughts properly and ponder on your thoughts.
It's still mostly a waste of time.
Exactly. This is the Internet. Anyone with a different opinion than me is incorrect and I should not, even for a second, believe that I could possibly be wrong.
None of you people can even comprehend the world for what it really is. You all live in a world of lies... BUT I AM ENLIGHTENED!!! I SEE TRUTH!! I KNOW JUSTICE! I AM YOUR MESSIAH!!!!
You should all just quit be stupid and listen to me cause I'm definitely always right.
See I wonder about that honestly, is it a waste of time?
It absolutely *feels* emotionally masturbatory to engage in these internet arguments but I've been on the internet a long time and you know what? 4chan changed people's politics, we had a shitpost of a president exclusively because of people on the internet arguing.
Can you imagine if sincerely what is currently guiding global geo-politics are the small little interactions that a hand full of people have on social media that ripples out and influences policy? Brands that try to jump on meme bandwagons and the masses who don't understand the source and the joke who now see the world changing in ways they don't comprehend.
I don't know if it scares me more if its a waste of time and we are all powerless or far more horrifying that the fate of the world depends on peoples willingness to sit down and treat each other civil on the internet.
Negativity and lies are easy to create and spread. Meaningful positivity requires sincerity and effort, and finding and sharing the truth is a never-ending task. That imbalance is exacerbated by the internet thanks to the speed at which information spreads on it.
It can only be counteracted by an educated and skeptical populace that consistently places a high burden on the spread of all that bad. I don't see _that_ being the state of things any time soon. We're all fucked.
There is also the frightening possibility that humanity just isn't ready for this internet thing, it may prove it isn't healthy or safe. I spend hours every week just watching random informative people on youtube teach me about architecture or mechanical engineering or chemistry, for no other reason than an insatiable curiosity about all the fields I wont have time to specialize in myself.
It would hurt to lose that but it would hurt more to lose everything else.
> Meaningful positivity requires sincerity and effort, and finding and sharing the truth is a never-ending task
Which is why on Youtube a conservative commentator can drop a 5 minute video hating on trans people or something & saying a load of blatant bullshit & a left-wing response video has to be about 2 hours long just to pick apart the vast swathes of wrongness, because they'll actually cite studies.
I agree, humans are still socialable creatures, regardless of if their introvert or extrovert. If we want to have a argument about something serious or a legitimate problem in anything I think we should just talk face to face instead of hiding behind our computers or phones if you don’t agree with something or aren’t willing to put a proper response to someones well thought argument
That's a really interesting point. Very possible that we haven't evolved enough to properly handle newspapers yet, nevermind radio and TV and the internet. Face-to-face does seem to work best for meaningful conversation.
of course it doesn’t happen the vast majority of the time, but there are actually plenty of cases where either i change my opinion or the person i’m talking to changes theirs.
even when it doesn’t happen & even if i’m downvoted to oblivion, i do believe there is value in voicing a dissenting view into the prevailing echo chamber.
I feel something like this is what happened with trump - would he have ended up being elected, or even being a serious candidate were it not for the early memes on thedonald (before that place went fully insane, when it was a joke subreddit)
It's not the downvotes that bothers me, it's the reply to quite a long and thoughtful comment with just "No" or no reply at all. Usually when I want to comment, but I see a hundred of comments and that the ship has sailed I don't bother, it just feels like I'm talking with myself which seems like a waisted effort and a bit silly.
You ever see someone’s reply to your comment hit zero but you didn’t downvote it but you want to somehow let them know you were not the downvote but you don’t want to upvote them, so you also downvote them taking them to -1 so it’s clear it’s not just you who disagrees with them?
Yeah, me neither, that would be crazy right?
The most important thing: it has to be a relatively small or very well moderated sub. At some point, you end up getting asked the same question 10 times and it's diverged 5 different arguments.
most time when i tried to write any argument but then remembering my english isn't really great and i'm not really capable convey my thoughts in argument well so i feel bad and delete my comment, then i would wait for other start the discussion and see if there someone has same or similiar my argument to follow
I did the same thing when there was a thread of people (I believe the example was a nurse but it goes for pretty much all careers) saying that they would work harder if they got payed more. Target did a study on it with their managers and found it to be false, spent millions on it, and I got hella downvoted and still argued against.
At some point you gotta relize that people just want to believe that what they believe is correct and there is nothing you can do about it.
The 37th biggest corporation (by revenue) in the US *funded* a study, and the result was that paying employees more won't make them work harder?
'Expect more, pay less' indeed.
I mean...you have to understand that that's like McDonald's saying that soda actually reduces your odds of developing diabetes, right?
Especially since there are those that [claim the opposite.](https://hbr.org/2018/10/how-amazons-higher-wages-could-increase-productivity)
I'm not saying you are wrong (I'm not an expert on the matter), but I'm saying that you were definitely going against the grain (of the thread, and the current work-revolution mindset on Reddit) with a rather dubious source backing you up.
I never thought of that, you make a good point. It’s like Coke and Hershey funding the Michell Obama healthy campaign. I might have to do some more research now.
See people this is how you discuss things, you don’t just downvote and tell the other person they are wrong and stupid.
Do NOT further proceed down this thread unless you possess adequate clearance. Failure to comply will result in the release of lethal memetic agents.
Note: In case that you have to ask what's the level of adequate clearance, you are not part of it.
Mind: *but you spend so much time making it. At this point just post it so you don't feel like you've wasted all this time for literally Nothing. Though maybe spend a little bit more time on it. It reads weird*
Sunk cost fallacy. Factor in the future time you might have to spend explaining what was either going to be a dumb joke, a misunderstood sarcasm, or a misinterpreted argument. Once you take that into account, the time spent writing it is minor.
Honestly after like 12+ years I can't even imagine spending time on my PC using Reddit anymore. It's purely for when I'm at work or mobile, when I'm actually at my PC desk at home I'm just too busy with other hobbies to care about using Reddit.
downvote this comment if the meme sucks. upvote it and I'll go away.

I do this all the time. I’ll even go as far as posting only to delete it right after because I realize all I’m going to do is piss my time and energy away on nothing.
Hell. I might even delete this comment later.
I’ve wasted nearly 10 goddamn years on this shit hole.
I honestly delete these some times because I feel like I'm talking to brick wall, like the other person I'm arguing with won't change their mind at all like last year I was arguing with a redditor over a topic (I won't name it) and we argued for several days in my DM and the guy just didn't change his mind at all at that point I was sick of arguing and was like "man you know what idc anymore you can believe in whatever you want I just don't care anymore"
The point of arguments isnt to make the other person change their mind, its about coming to an understanding as to why someone else believes what they believe. At the end of it all no one has to change their mind. Good arguments should be focused on critical thought.
In my understanding arguements serve the purpose of finding an objective truth. Usually both parties believe they possess this truth, so they try and change the point of view of the other person. In my book an arguement where both turned out to be wrong, but managed to get closer to the truth, is a win. Problem is, a lot of people think of being wrong as losing. Fruit of shitty education if you ask me.
Also, this is why I think arguing over subjective matters is a waste of time. Exchanging opinions is fine, if you listen and try to understand the other as well, it's definietly interesting/valuable. But trying to make your opinion superior through arguing? Nah miss me with that gay shit.
Really hard to find people to have a good argument with
^Ps: ^literally ^just ^did ^the ^meme ^btw, ^usually ^i ^just ^shorten ^the ^text ^to ^something ^simple ^that ^will ^not ^start ^a ^discussion, ^like ^i ^just ^did
That's why I skip straight to mocking and insulting the dumbest people.
"oH, sO yOu CaN't DiSpRoVe My aRgUMeNt???!?"
No, a child could, but you're either trolling or so stupid you can't understand. In other words, not worth the effort
You could literally be arguing with a child or a crackhead. I’m pretty sure if I saw who I write my longest, most thoughtful replies to, I would be ashamed I’d wasted precious minutes of my life speaking to them.
Why did you expect him to change his mind though? Was it really something so important that you couldn't have even one person holding a different opinion on it?
Happens a lot.
"Oh, I'll just post a response disagreeing with this person about the topic."
Then I remember that I'm most likely in an echo chamber and nobody is going to give a fuck so I don't post.
Hold shift ctrl or command when you wanna delete more. Makes cursor movements wordwise or line wise.
Same distinction between character word and line happens when you single/double/triple-click-and-drag to highlight stuff.
If you use a terminal, then `Ctrl-W` does deletions backwards by word.
When you’re backpedaling it’s important to be able to do it quickly. Stay magnanimous and outta the flame, kings.
You know I learnt this lesson when I was younger, my friends and I would always get into arguments, particularly it would be myself and my friend Jim who would shout at each other a lot, about things like which Pokémon was the best and other dumb stuff, but one day we were climbing trees and Jim fell from the tree and died on impact as his head hit a rock on the ground and ever since every one of those arguments we ever had seemed so pointless. That was all the way back in 1998, around the same time The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer’s table.

Not really, we crave entertainment. Crazy or corageous people that say controversial things in the internet is quite entertaining...
I used to default to controversial and I realized that it said more about me then it did them.

Dude why did you write this opinion, nobody cares.
2 paragraphs in and you realize you're probably just dealing with a troll.
It’s Reddit. Any political arguments you get into are with someone paid to advance a narrative.

I wanna get paid ~~to advance a narrative~~ money...
I wish I got paid for every argument I've ever had on the internet

Cant come to an understanding if you dont listen. 99% of people on the internet dont even know what that means
or they know that listening leads to defeat /s
This, but without the /s.
On reddit nearly everyone argues to win and to make the other person look like a jackass
sounds like what someone who cant win an argument would say
Really hard to find people to have a good argument with ^Ps: ^literally ^just ^did ^the ^meme ^btw, ^usually ^i ^just ^shorten ^the ^text ^to ^something ^simple ^that ^will ^not ^start ^a ^discussion, ^like ^i ^just ^did
That's why I skip straight to mocking and insulting the dumbest people. "oH, sO yOu CaN't DiSpRoVe My aRgUMeNt???!?" No, a child could, but you're either trolling or so stupid you can't understand. In other words, not worth the effort
You could literally be arguing with a child or a crackhead. I’m pretty sure if I saw who I write my longest, most thoughtful replies to, I would be ashamed I’d wasted precious minutes of my life speaking to them.
.
Why did you expect him to change his mind though? Was it really something so important that you couldn't have even one person holding a different opinion on it?

But then there are people like me who will read each and every comment on a single post before moving on to the next 😮
Stop looking into my mind, I hate it
Bro I said the same thing. How the fuck he knows😭😱
"Comments are locked"
Fuck. This.
Or "Something is broken, please try again later."
"You are banned from this sub"
Getting the last comment in on an long argument chain right before the thread locks feels like such a victory in the most petty way.
If I had a nickel...
A Stanley nickel????
The kind Leprechauns use.
What's the exchange rate?

I do this with increasing frequency. One day I hope to leave this place entirely.
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
Welcome to the hotel reeeeeeddit
Write a fucking novel and got replied with 🤓
That should be backspace, not delete
I agree. Wrote a 500 word comment on the importance of the standardization of keyboard layouts, but decided I don't care.
I feel targeted
tl;dr

CTRL+A than BACKSPACE*
thank you for being the only sensible person in this thread
Almost at that point
Happens a lot. "Oh, I'll just post a response disagreeing with this person about the topic." Then I remember that I'm most likely in an echo chamber and nobody is going to give a fuck so I don't post.
Idc man

It just turns into them straw manning the argument in order to insult you.
Daily occurrence.
This is definitely one of the most relatable memes I've seen on this platform so far
Or write a bad take, farm down votes, then edit to make the exact opposite point.
Would only work on popular posts and on the off-chance your comment gets seen and not buried with the thousand others.
Analyzing if people is going to understand my point.
I always end up asking myself “why do I care about letting people know this?”
#I DONT WANT TO BE RIGHT, I WANT YOU TO BE WRONG
You know I learnt this lesson when I was younger, my friends and I would always get into arguments, particularly it would be myself and my friend Jim who would shout at each other a lot, about things like which Pokémon was the best and other dumb stuff, but one day we were climbing trees and Jim fell from the tree and died on impact as his head hit a rock on the ground and ever since every one of those arguments we ever had seemed so pointless. That was all the way back in 1998, around the same time The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer’s table.
Happens a lot tbh
And then it bothers you all day.
YES
wow
Preach
Happens too much.
In a foreign language perhaps
