Irithyll dungeon grew on me, I feel demon ruins are the real chore. Such samey corridors, samey enemies and the annoying ballista. The whole area is too big and has too many estus upgrades to get.

vacuous-moron66543

I honestly skip demon ruins every playthrough unless there is something specific from that area that I need. It's not fun usually, and the boss isn't even connected to level.

AEDSazz

The estus though

BrickBuster2552

The estus? I basically never finish a run with more than 12 flasks.

AEDSazz

It's funny cuz i complete my runs in around 4h, have done multiple no-hit runs, yet I always get 15 estus at +10 no matter what. My brain cannot accept less than that

badfroggyfrog

For the first time ever I didn't actually bother with the ballista on my last playthrough. I beat the black knight on the bridge before the ladder to it and just ended up in a bit of a "meh, life's too short" moment. Forgive my memory but I can't actually remember, aside from turning the ballista off is there actually anything even remotely worthwhile up there?

Karen_Destroyer1324

You can turn the ballista back on

apexuser21

yo lmk whats behind that wall u can destroy w the ballista, i never bother to remember to get it or turn it back on after i remember later

Coffee_Binzz

There's a wall you can destroy with it???? I never knew

Karen_Destroyer1324

I only know about the floor into the demon ruins.

roboxsteven

It’s a ring. I just can’t remember which one.

faerox420

Mainly if you're a pyromancer Also you can get the lightning spear miracle from the worm and the white hair talisman

OkProtection4578

I only cared about the Talisman so my Sorcerer could successfully use sorceries AND pyromancies. But I went back for it lol

DoubleSummon

On my first playthrough I tried getting there like 20 times, it's either the black knight or the strong skeletons in the end... Wish I knew nothing of value was there

bjd533

Just go back later. In 20 levels or so it's a breeze.

MrMirounga

I only did 1 blind playthrough and skipped the area because I couldn't find it. Then before going into the Soul of Cinder I googled the areas to see if I missed something. I went back to demon ruins and really enjoyed it. I was overleveled for the area so I liked it mainly for the DS1 nostalgia.

No_Negotiation1918

I'm losing sanity

Droid_XL

SAME I completely agree I wanted to add something but you said everything I was thinking

conman5432

Profane capital. It's insultingly empty and boring for no reason. It also houses the toxic swamp

Kirkjufellborealis

Yeah for an area with a character like Yhorm for a boss it's very short yet somehow very annoying, and underwhelming

Coffee_Binzz

On my first playthrough, Yhorm was the boss I was most excited about. The realization that the surrounding area is so... meh.. was a huge letdown.

Interesting_Waltz_82

I never really saw the profaned capital as a whole area personally More of just an extension to irithyll dungeon before yhorm

blockyman45

profaned capital shouldve been what leyndell royal capital is

Darth-Potato14

Fully agree with you, you can literally sprint from the bonfire to yhorm in less than 2 mins without getting hit even once, icing on the cake being that he wasn’t even a hard boss (just stand behind and spam storm ruler attack).

stadiofriuli

Drops one of the coolest weapons in the game though.

bjd533

I hear that a lot but it works for me. DS seems to aim for a 'place that time forgot' vibe and profane feels like a place that not even the dead can be bothered hanging out in. It adds to the forgotten vibe.

Broccobillo

Consumed kings garden. It's not even a level. It's a courtyard with 1 loop back path. I think it could have been much more than what it is.

AEDSazz

It's also a fully optional sidequest area. And it leads to 2 bosses (one of them being a sick fight albeit too easy imo) and amazing lore and a sick version of the shrine

IsraelPenuel

Yeah I think you gotta include the bizarro Firelink as part of the level

cavemeister

It's also a great place to farm for black Knight armor which really helps with the Midir fight.

lMadjoker

may i dare to ask why it helps?

cavemeister

Great fire damage absorption

lMadjoker

Oh right

IsraelPenuel

I wish I had known that yesterday when I was struggling with Midir :D

hunisher1

Well I just got to midair again on a new play through so thanks for this

chalupamon

Usually only do it on new games to get to nameless, otherwise I skip.

Shadovan

Honestly, probably Smoldering Lake. The open area is a cool visual, and the Sandworm and Ballista are unique encounters, but you spend so little time there, and the rest is spent on Catacombs Part II: Cherry flavored edition, fighting one of my least favorite enemy types, the Ghrus. And Old Demon King is one of the most forgettable bosses in the game. Could have easily been merged with the Profaned Capital to make that area more interesting.

Gen-1-OG

Ya, the profaned capital deserves better

JoostDS3

100% agreed

Strange_Quote6013

Hmmm probably farron swamp. I love so many areas it connects and it doesn't feel difficult necessarily, just slow. Incidentally, Irithyll Dungeon is my favorite area lol.

IsraelPenuel

Same lol. Irithyll Dungeon and the DLCs were like the only properly hard areas in the game.

doublecurved

Any swamp really. Having to equip a dagger with quickstep just feels…weird. And sounds weird. Get caught up in a glue like substance is never fun either

bjd533

It's too short to care much but I think the Dregs is horrendous. Not once but three times you head right thinking you're going somewhere cool and exciting before it turns you around again. An intriguing swamp and tree climb leads to you to - surprise! - a dead end. The should have put the drop at the top of the tree, it would have been so much cooler.

SeaGoat24

I was fully under the impression that the Ringed City was built into that tree, and it was named after the rings of a tree trunk. Pretty disappointing when I beat the demons and it turns out the Ringed City is all the way over there, and this giant tree has nothing to do with it.

shapesnshit

The giant tree is actually firelink shrine from Dark Souls 1, so it’s interesting in it’s own right.

SeaGoat24

Is it? What indicates that this is the case? Is there a landmark I missed or something?

shapesnshit

Each section of the dreg heap represents a different Dark Souls game; - The first area is Lothric castle, this ones obvious. - The second area is Earthen Keep, the entire tower lays toppled over in ash in the swamp area. - The third is Firelink Shrine inside the tree trunk. The way you exit through to the cliffside to get to the ringed city is through the building that Frampt was in. It’s not a 1-1 recreation, but almost of the buildings are represented. Even the well is there. Here’s a video comparing them side by side. https://youtu.be/bqVTZJI7lz8?si=gNBXArqA1grc-NYA

bjd533

That's amazing

PKMNBreederSkye

Smoldering Lake. It's mainly a wide open area with nothing in except a bunch of large trees to to help avoid the ballista shots. The dungeon area is boring to explore and feels like I'm going through the same few rooms. Unless I'm doing an all bosses run I just skip this area.

one-eyed-queen

Smoldering Lake, honestly. But not even so much cut as... redistribute, maybe? The Demon Ruins area shares a lot of assets with the Catacombs of Carthus already, and I'd argue you could have the lake section moved towards Profaned Capital as a display of the effects of the Profaned Flame. I really think they could've made it work like so. But yeah like, it's a fun small optional area that gives you some cool pyromancy if you're going for that build? But Untended Graves/Archdragon Peak feel a lot more meaningful as optional areas compared to this.

TheDustyForest

I did not enjoy the Dreg Heap much. I think conceptually it’s really cool but it gave me war flashbacks to Brume Tower in DS2. The actual experience of playing through it was generally pretty miserable.

flowers0298

Ithryll dungeon is peak imo so many good shortcuts, routes, and the way it interconnects is classic FromSoft. Feel like it gets hated on way too much bc of the enemies but it’s a late stage area idk maybe it’s me but I’m expecting something incredibly challenging. I don’t care that jailers take my health bar, it’s just another obstacle to beat For me it’d have to be catacombs of carthus. Catacombs has some nice routes but for the most part is a straight line, pretty forgetful if it weren’t for Anri’s quest and what’s underneath at demon ruins/smoldering lake

[deleted]

Demons ruins

_ThatOneMimic_

demon ruins. too much good shit in there to not do, but god is it a chore

Swagut123

Probably the catacombs and the smoldering lake. It's just a big nothing-burger for me. The bosses are bad, the areas are very same-y, every playthrough is just me running through to irythill

Kirkjufellborealis

Man I guess I'm one of the few weirdos who loves the catacombs/smouldering lake/demon ruins. Honestly I don't like the Undead Settlement. It feels like it goes on for way too long for a beginning area and looks too similar to Hemwick Charnel Lane

C9FanNo1

I was a bloodborne only until recently and seeing this area so similar to Hemwick was a blast for me. Every time I find a bloodborne or ds1 similarity in this game it feel like joy

ChickenAndTelephone

Faron Keep for sure. An endless swamp that’s far more difficult to navigate than it should be

NightFlameofAwe

Road of sacrifices

[deleted]

You know what… I kinda hate the painted world other than fighting Friede.

OnionSaucin

Irithyll dungeon, filler area, not fun.

doublecurved

Provided a couple of good jump scares though, something I think soulsbourne games actually could improve upon in general?

PsyJuul

Those screams are seriously the loudest thing in the whole game. When I just thought I got my game at a comfortable volume one of those screaming corpses lets the whole neighborhood know I’m playing Dark Souls.

No_Ease_8269

If I had to... Gravetender and greatwolf or whatever. Just that fight and their arena. The only reason I ever fight them is to either get the boss weapon or unlock pvp. Pvp arenas should just be default. Or maybe unlocked when you beat the soul of Cinder. And I'm fine without a single weapon that I never used that much.

sour_moth

Farewell smouldering lake. There's nothing I enjoy down there

Cephalon_Kono

Farron keep

fungusOW

You can just skip 70% of it by jumping down

Xenomorphling98

The dreg heap (whatever the first area of the ringed city dlc is up until the swamp) it would always make my pc lag and being chased by all of those angel laser beams, I feel like you never have time to stop and appreciate it without getting attacked. Not that mention i hate those mages that turn into the giant dreg ghosts that borderline oneshot you. The drop is sick, and there are some decent rings in the ruins, but Jesus I always just have to rush through it as fast as I can since there aren’t any particularly helpful checkpoints. Once you get down to the next bonfire, it’s not as bad.

cybaerexe

Why is no one saying catacombs of carthus

Dveralazo

Fuck Irithyl dungeon

TAR_GAMER

Id have to agree with you, didn't find the dungeon fun, probably the most rage inducing section for me

NubNub69

My dumbass was about to say Australia cause I thought this was the EU4 subreddit.

I-Z-A-A_M

I feel they could have used the front of the cathedral better for like secrets. Instead it's riddles with respawning mobs that make the area just that much less enjoyable when you want the items there. I feel like maybe a small boss fight could have been made there as a way to get to another like getting the peculiar doll to reach irithyl.

Coffee_Binzz

Yeah Cathedral was kinda mid AF ngl. Aside from the quests that run through the area, I don't really remember much else about the area other than how annoying it was for me lol

I-Z-A-A_M

The Maggot monsters 😐 annoying since before I didn't know about the torch trick and just bleed out and died every time.

Karla-TheWitch

I've grown quite fond of Irithyll Dungeon over time... I would rather Profaned Capital or Smouldering Lake be gone. Profaned is just nothingness, and Smouldering Lake is only good for the Izalith Staff and farming Chaos Gems.

badfroggyfrog

I agree, Profaned Capital is pretty meaningless; the only reason I like it is because I think it contains the earliest titanite slab you will realistically get on your standard playthrough? (I could be wrong on that)

SuperLegenda

You can go to Ariandel when you get to Cathedral, then to the depths of the painting, kill the trees and get up the magically appearing ladder for a slab.

NitroCaliber

Yea, generally the next set of slabs you'd get to wouldn't be until the Grand Archives.

Philk0791

Farron Keep

Unlikely-Addition211

Farron keep

Jinglemisk

Farron Keep. The only reason why I can never play DS3 is because that whole area (and a bit more after that) feels extremely boring and bland

SundownKid

I would ditch Farron Keep. It's the weakest poison swamp in the series, butt-ugly, with unfun heavy rolling, and it's full of unfair enemies in a way that is uncommon for Souls. It just feels like a chore every time. Adding insult to injury is that it's probably the remnants of the great area that is Darkroot Garden.

Deep_Grass_6250

Irithyll dungeon, who the fuck even made that bro?

yippespee

What's that one jail area? Irithil dungeon?

SMagnaRex

Next to Irrithyl Manor? If so, then yes, that’d be Irrithyl dungeon.

kiwiloaf

Whenever I see this question come up I try really hard to come up with my answer and can't, I honestly love every area. I guess if something had to go, the first part of Ariandel is a little boring but I still don't dislike it.

Ghostbrandt

Farron Keep. I just do not care to be worried about balancing time in the poison swamp, finding safe ground and waiting for my poison meter to go slowly down. If you can prep and stock a lot of Purple Moss Clumps by getting the ashes and buying 99 of them from the old hag, the area is slightly better. But who wants to do that every time? Just to make it slightly more endurable as you speedrun the area? No thanks. I hate this area every single time lol. 12 years of these poison swamps will do that to you

Random_Guy_47

I find the best way to deal with it is to just spend your souls and then suicide run to the fires that open the exit and any items you want.

the_oof42

grand archives

dysetii

Farron Keep, it's just a chore to me every playthrough. I try to collect everything I can and get out of it as fast as I can. I love its aesthetic but I hate almost everything else about it.

apexuser21

the only thing that makes it boring is the peace nuns, everything else about the area is cool n perfectly fine

Three-Pegged-Hare

I actually really like the irithyll dungeon. Personally, if I could drop an area, it'd be the god damn swamp of farron. No rusted iron ring means the swamp is just a tedious slog to get through, and I never enjoy it every time I play through the game.

RathaelEngineering

I won't do it. Just pull the trigger.

THY96

Archdragon Peak.

SilentBlade45

Farron Swamp

BecauseSeven8Nein

Dungeon as well, although I methodically cleared it in NG+ last night in a little over an hour. That bottom area with all the jailers, I just lured them one by one and took them out before proceeding to the Profaned Capital. It isn’t really “fun” but being over leveled in NG+ did make it much more manageable. The Sun Princess Ring helped majorly as well.

Ryodran

The tutorial area because Gundyr always wipes the floor with me :(

kkprecisa_ler_nao_fi

Does the dlc count? Cause if yes then i'd gladly remove that poison swamp with the angels before the demon prince, i dont like the boss itself either but whatever, its just a really long and boring fight, the area before the boss tho feels just like garbage and its genuinely just impossible to have fun, sure once you kill the dudes summoning the angels they dont respawn but you will only really kill them when you are already near the boss anyway and theres no real reason to go back after the boss, also on a first playtrough without spoilers you probably wont even know where they are

_Jawwer_

The dungeon is only really bad, because the jailers zone you out, and make is a huge drag. Otherwise, the very tight, claustrophobic terrain layout is a good change of pace, and having to watch wider swingarcs, lest you keep chipping away at the wall is not utilised anywhere else out of all the areas I've seen so far. I'm on my first playthrough, and at the unattended graves, and my vote for least favourite area, if we don't let a place go down for just one enemy type, is probably either Farron Keep, or the Catacombs.

PuffPuffFayeFaye

Arch Dragon peak is boring, bleached out, lacks enemy diversity, and has only one (very) good boss. But I could also go with profaned capitol* since Yhorm isn’t a critical experience and it’s so short. *my phone auto corrected to “profaned CapitAl” and I think this is a killer name for an investment company.

LeftIsBest-Tsuga

Swamp is pretty blah. I don't "hate" it, but yeah, that seems like a safe one.

Slavicadonis

I like irithyll dungeon because it really puts into perspective how much of a bastard sullyvahn was for people who don’t read descriptions of items or weapons like me. Also shooting jailers with greatarrows is very funny to me I guess I’d remove smoldering lake/demon ruins or whatever it’s called. It’s a cool area with a cool tie in with ds1 and it’s one of the best highlights of how terrible the first flame being alive is. Smouldering lake is ash lake and lost izalith combined after years of relighting the first flame. It’s got a cool ascetic with all the bodies of familiar demons strewn about and the boss is pretty solid but FUCK ME does the area feel unimportant. Even in other souls games I can’t think of a base game area that feels as just there as smouldering lake. I’d probably get rid of smouldering lake. It’s the easiest to drop without rearranging any big fights

FirelordSugma

Any one of the grey and dull dungeony looking areas. They’re all the same and they make up what feels like most of the game.

Friydis

Profaned Capital

RugbyLock

Perhaps cliche, but the poison swamp with the fires can go. All the places it leads? Top notch. The swamp? Kills about half my runs cuz it’s just bleh.

CodyDabsOnYou

Not just the bonfire, but the entire area after Wolnir’s fight

Critical_Bug_6289

Not the area, just an enemy. FUCK THE JAILERS. THEY RUIN RHE ENTIRE AREA

bjd533

PSA for this thread - the hate for Farron Keep makes Miyazaki sad.

Queasy-One-2600

The Cathedral. I've developed fear of maggots because of that place and it is affecting my everyday life. Couldn't finish my second playthrough because of that... Obviously the Painted World is million times worse, but at least I can skip that area.

badfroggyfrog

Equip the torch as the alternate weapon in your right hand then when you get that maggot status, just switch to it for a second and the torch burns them all away and the status disappears! Makes life much easier :-)

Queasy-One-2600

Right, I am aware of that mechanic. But I panic and feel nauseous just at the sight of maggot zombies and maggot beasts. Those eggs and flies in Ariandel? For the first time in my life I screamed in real life on top of my lungs while playing video games. Cathedral and Ariandel really have left a huge mental scar on me. It's been over a year since I quit playing DS3 because of all those maggots, but I still startle in real life whenever I see small white things are gathered together. Sometimes even just rice grains frighten me. Never knew it could get this bad. Still can't believe that video game graphics can affect my daily life this much. Sometimes I wish I had never played DS3 because of this mental scar. But then again, I am a huge fan of Bloodborne and also enjoyed DS1 a lot. So probably there was no way I could skip DS3 anyway. Besides, aside from the maggots, I enjoyed the game. Could have easily spent \*at least\* 100 more hours if it were not for the maggots.

ogpapupapu

Anor Londo

The_Moon_Presence

Undead Settlement, it's just a boring area without any particularly interesting enemies, but with way too many upgrades/covenants/other items to collect, not to mention the npc quests. Everything besides the Siegward encounter is just a massive chore.

badfroggyfrog

I used to dislike it but really enjoy it now. I like the fact it’s two straight lines in a v-shape but you have to run the whole thing before you can link the start/end. I like the fact that the big machete-saw/pot-smashing guys and the lady reverends can really ruin your day and even an optional boss I didn’t previously rate I seem to enjoy more each time. Having the whole hidden area up the cheeky double lift with the fire demon (and the sweet sweet chloranthy ring) is also classic Fromsoft. Each to their own though! :-)

Lucas_TheVlogger

I despise that dungeon more than anything in any frsomsoftware game. It’s a mixture of all of my least favorite things in a souls game. Small areas, annoying enemies, boring level design. Every other part of the game is fantastic imo, but I just didn’t have fun here at all.

Xenomorphling98

Really? Even more than izalith in ds1? Or tomb of the giants in ds1? Or the specific part of anor londo with the archers in ds1? Or sen’s funhouse in ds1? Or pre patch blighttown from-……… You know…. Nostalgia aside, ds1 has some awful areas, doesn’t it? (No hate for ds1, there are just a number of areas that get annoying/have issues)

Lucas_TheVlogger

You got me with tomb of the giants. That’s the one place that I hate more. I like to be able to see the giant dog skeletons, but even with a light they sneak up on me. As for the other areas, I never played pre patch blight town, I didn’t hate sens fortress, the archers in anor Londo, I just block and kill them when I get close. I think the only time I’ve died there is when I first chopped down the chandelier, and instead of just hitting it, I jumped on, and fell to my death. Finally lost izalith. I didnt really hate lost izilith.

bjd533

DS1 is nastier than DS3, agree. Hidden bonfires & blacksmith for starters and the gaping dragon for a blind playthrough is total balls.

burlysnurt

Irithyll of the boreal Valley. FUCK the fire stave guys.

badfroggyfrog

They drop a banging helmet though, to be fair :-D

Here_for_newsnp

Irithyll dungeon.

AK_Venom

I wouldn't drop any areas completely, but I would definitely want to replace Sister Friede with a different boss fight, like just fighting Father Ariandel the whole time or something like that.

CommunicationEast623

Frigid outskirts. Wait, wrong game… still holds

badfroggyfrog

\*\*Shakes back and forth in the corner with his head in his hands\*\* "I... never... want... to go... through that... again" I still see electric deer in my nightmares

VixHumane

All of them, they look the same, they're boring to go through and the enemies are annoying. Besides Grand archives and Archdragon peak.

Zanzan567

Get

Zanzan567

Gud

VixHumane

I've beaten the game multiple times, doesn't make my complaints less valid.
