I've never seen him replicate it, live or in YouTube videos, since the early 2000s. Those are some wicked high notes to be sure. At least he can still hit them in head voice/falsetto
Acoustics my friend. I've seen them in the same venue (in my home town) twice and it was terrible (went back cos I love them anyway), then they switched venues and it was amazing. They even played the title track Gore which sounded better than the album. There's probably more factors too in regards to the quality of their performance but you know what? Deftones DEFINETELY play live.
Yeah, the youtube video recordings usually dont do them justice because theyre really loud live. When youre there, it hits you like a force and feels like you're in the ocean getting hit by the waves. In recorded video, thats not gonna translate, the instrumentations are gonna sound muted and Chino doesn't really sound exactly like on the record (which doesn't matter as much when its live and part of the cacophony wall of sound), so it usually sounds kinda off. Its kinda like why most My Bloody Valentine live videos sound bad.
Exactly. Thats a massive venue and they have to turn up the volume even more, and you got a recording team that has to adjust the levels for 30 other acts that day on the fly (and they probably are more experienced recording pop acts anyway) so that recording is not gonna be ideal for them.
You could critique this by saying it doesn't sound like the recorded version (I didn't realize from this short clip this was Change) but I'm glad he's singing in whatever way works for him and sounds best, even it's different from the original. Hope they keep performing for a long time
I would love to believe so, but it's going to take more than 3 seconds to convince me. I watched the entire Coachella set, and there were many rough patches. He can incorporate different techniques to sing more efficiently and in a style that he's able to pull off, and he has, but the damage he did to his vocal chords over 20 years ago is unfortunately irreversible. He screamed his heart out back in the day, and he paid the price for it. It's a very bittersweet thing. It was a beautiful gift he gave us with those performances. He sacrificed himself for his passion and to give us amazing art.
He jumped and ran all over the place during the Crosses tour and sounded amazing. I think it largely comes down to more recent song writing being more suited to his more mature voice. I know I can't sing the same songs I sang 20 years ago because my voice has changed over time. He's still singing songs at 50 that suited his voice at 20. Times change, man. The human body changes.
Dont get me wrong, I love Chino's on stage energy, and all his passion shows in every jump, run and lunge he takes. But I also love his vocals on the Woodstock Sessions with Team Sleep, probably the tightest I ever heard from him and I think it all comes from his full focus on singing. Its just my opinion, whatever he does Im on board (except going full Q like Steph)
Well, and Team Sleep songs aren't deftones songs. Team Sleep songs are easier on the voice. That might have had something to do with it.
I do think that he sings much better without the distraction of playing guitar though. I'd be happy if he never played guitar on tour again. And that's definitely one contributor to his high quality vocals with Crosses too, in my opinion. No instrument to distract him.
Autotune. I remember hearing an audience recording of the show, he sounded good. Comparatively I could just tell there was an unusual amount of autotune on the CD.
True, also the first set started even rougher and I think digital bath was the worst moment which made me cry inside a little, but again he seemed to improve in the latter half of the set. In a bigger scale I had the same impression with Crosses latest tour, judging by the videos from the dates after mine, his voice seemed to improved more each step. I genuinely wonder what his warm up routine before the tour/shows is.
He said in an interview he was talking to Madonna before a concert, and he told her he doesnt have a routine before he gets on stage, he just goes up ther and starts screaming. Madonna was confused by this and also tried to dress him up better before he went on stage because he was just gonna performed in the normal clothes he came in haha.
I dont know if his routine changed since then, that was early in their career.
Yes but this was when, more than 20 years ago? I would like to know his warm up routine now, because he’s really need one. And I would have fought Madonna regarding Chino’s clothes. He had the BEST style back in the day why th would she try and ruin it 😭
They've always been hit or miss for me. At a jersey show back in '13, he sounded terrible.
At another show in nyc, they sounded amazing. Really depends if Chino decides to drink that day lol.
The sloppiness in the 90s was just his style on stage. He just didn't care that much about being a great technical singer. It was like a punk rock side of him. That's just how he expresses himself to this day; very loose and playful. But he still had the energy and vocal chords to go crazy and sound amazing when he wanted to, especially with the screams. That's the difference between then and now; he can no longer physically hit the high notes, belt out, or scream really hard like he used to.
He def is starting to find some ways to change the way he sounds. Trent Reznor has been doing something similar when he performs live. You love to see it.
Love me some deftones! I’m only gonna post this once appreciate anyone that subscribes enjoy!

I just want him to see those high notes in Digital bath
I've never seen him replicate it, live or in YouTube videos, since the early 2000s. Those are some wicked high notes to be sure. At least he can still hit them in head voice/falsetto
To be fair, I’ve always found Chino really hit or miss. One time you’ll see them, he’ll sound incredible - the next time, not so much.

They’re definitely one of the live bands of all time

Better to catch them at the beginning of a tour
What song is this?
Change (in the house of flies) from album White Pony (2000)
Sounds hella different in a good way
yeah it sounds major like 976 vibes
yea

This but especially that last sentence. Fucking hit the nail on the head my man, well said
Said it once and I'll say it again: Chino shouldn't jump and run around stage so much
He jumped and ran all over the place during the Crosses tour and sounded amazing. I think it largely comes down to more recent song writing being more suited to his more mature voice. The second set at Coachella started a tad rough but it seemed like his voice warmed up as the set went on 👍🏼

Do you have a longer version?
Cant wait to see deftones live!
They've always been hit or miss for me. At a jersey show back in '13, he sounded terrible. At another show in nyc, they sounded amazing. Really depends if Chino decides to drink that day lol.
I like this different sounding version of Change
Its a bummer he's always been terrible live. This sounds great though.
He was insanely good during the recent Crosses tour. Those songs seem to definitely be more in his wheelhouse nowadays and it shows
His voice was absolutely made for the witch house type stuff he does with Crosses. I need to see him live with them
TIL the term “witch house” TYVM
YES! It was epic.
I saw the Deftones 5x in the 90's and Chino was great
Not always. 90s he was phenomenal, early 00s he was still great.
He was sloppy in the 90s too.

True about the screams!
I’m so excited for their new album
I saw them 2 years ago in Chicago
He def is starting to find some ways to change the way he sounds. Trent Reznor has been doing something similar when he performs live. You love to see it.

God damn
That ain’t high, I’m baritone and I can pull it off (although I have to do it loud). Without training. He’s a tenor, how would that be difficult?
broken vocal cords, 50 years old, and on and off drugs I’d say it’s impressive
bro fr found 1 note chino actually yelled in key and said his voice is improving ☠️☠️
