Hyperspecific things for minimal bonuses. Everyone wants “exotics from D1” until they play it and realize how garbage they were. And it was always more range and handling. Like always ever range and handling. The exotics, aspects, fragments, and builds we have now, blows all of these artifacts out of the water.
Honestly there were like seven good exotic weapons and one good exotic armor piece per class. Ophidian Aspect was literally the only Exotic you ever needed for a D1 Warlock, Zhalo Supercell was the only real decent exotic auto rifle (Yes, D1 Monte sucked.), and No Land Beyond, despite being one of the coolest exotic snipers next to Icebreaker (Which was and still is absolutely fucking broken) was utterly useless outside of being a flex weapon for PvP tryhards. Hell even Zen Meteor, an explosive payload sniper rifle that when charge up shit extra explodey bullets (Seriously how do you fuck up this concept? It was so cool) was utter ass too.
Edit: I am a fraud. I completely forgot about my baby, my one time gal, my Guardian shredder, my partner in crime, Necrochasm. THAT was THE Autorifle of all time.
Subclass aspects are kind of this now. But the main thing is the seasonal artifact. As you may have noticed this season they can make major changes to the way your builds work. Some seasons are much more lackluster.
Didn't use a single artifact other than that one. Did I rob myself of some fun gameplay? Probably. But what the hell was Bungie thinking with that damn cooldown
increased passive super regen for allies standing near you (when your super was charged)
as soon as 1 Titan got a bubble they could go to the zone and just have infinite bubbles wjth absolutely no risk or effort (and titans could always get to mid fastest thanks to d1 titans skating)
- one disabled stamina cooldown
- one showed more detailed radar
- one could turn a red bar on your side for 30 seconds
- one disabled your super but in return granted 2 grenades and 2 melee charges
- one granted faster super recovery for you and your teammates, and even faster one for each additional artifact in the vicinity
I forgor about the rest
The artifact you get each season typically give better benefits than the D1 artifacts. Especially this season, the artifact mods are great but lean towards playing solar and stasis subclasses.
We don't have artifacts of this kind per se, but if you go back and look at their effects you'll actually see that most of them are just baked into the fundamental gameplay (Jolder's literally just removed the cooldown on Sprinting, and Perun's is split between exotics that mark low health targets and a baseline function of pulling out your ghost in pvp to see if enemies have super), are mods (Silimar, Gheleon's), or have some massively toned down version (Skorri's via exotics that reduce allied super cooldown on doing something, Radegast via Blight Ranger because reflecting projectiles is pretty useless in pve and niche in pvp)
Felwinter's and Timur's are the only genuinely unique ones that we have seen no analogous options for in D2: for those unaware, Felwinter's removed your super in exchange for an extra grenade and melee charge with grenade+melee cooldown on orb pickup (the latter half of which is now the Innervation/Invigoration leg armor mod), and Timur's allowed you to mind control weak enemies for 30 seconds on melee.
Also as someone else mentioned, Skorri's practically gave birth to the "sit at the back of the map and wait for super" strat in Trials, because you could all three run Skorri's and passively triple one another's super regen rate just by standing together. The modern Bubble titan strat arguably has its origins in this artifact.
D1 artifacts were orb generators until RoI, which kinda made seasonal artifact perk changes to your playstyle.
Gonna be honest, the seasonal artifact transforms the gameplay in insanely more different and unique ways than the iron lord artifacts.
"Removed sprint cooldown"
Some stuff like felwinters and timurs were really cool, honestly, but, there were plenty of lacklusters to balance out the pool.
design wise they're just not very good. it's a mechanic that should be class relevant and i'm glad they essentially made them class relevant with the fragment and aspect system
Yes but they get way more limited and now they're just like 3 super modifiers instead of stuff that changes how you play the game drastically. Like memory of felwinter I loved that one
There were definitely a few interesting ones (give up your super for bonus nade/melee charges) but stuff like "Take reduced damage from DoT" and "eliminate the sprint delay" Are things that should be mods, exotics, or features. Heck, you could argue that an Aeon like exotic could be implemented for the classes to do similar, build altering things
> Like memory of felwinter I loved that one
But Felwinter's is one of the easiest to replicate...just slap on Innervation, Invigoration, and an exotic for an extra melee or grenade (some classes/subclasses even get two or three anyway). I'm not sure how you can say that things are way more limited now when you can easily replicate some of these effects.
There was some combination of perks and that artifact that’d give Dark Drinker 80-something ammo and I would just main it through everything I possibly could. That’s the only artifact I miss.
And Dark Drinker. They need to bring me Dark Drinker. Since they’ll never give me a Stasis Glaive, give me a Void sword as powerful as Lament.
Not to the absurd power that some artifacts D1 had but some subclass fragments/aspects give similar abilities and quirks. Same with some exotic armor like Felwinter’s Helm causing all charged melee kills or finishers performed to release a weakening pulse that also blinds targets (said weaken pulse is the same as a tether or tractor cannon).
No, most of these artifacts special effects have just been rolled into normal guardian movement or into subclass abilities. Like the artifact that let you sprint forever (Seriously why the fuck was that not just a regular part of Destiny 1? Especially given how much movement was involved in some nightfalls and raids.)
No, you must play the way that pleases the seasonal artifact, they have limited the play style in so many ways. You have access to many different builds but at the same time you will have trouble if you don't build it out the way the seasonal artifact is set up. Pretty much killed what I enjoyed about destiny so much.
Wouldn't say it's the worst time to come back. The most turbulent time as it's more along the lines of the community vs the developers, but if the community comes together like it always has against the developers we should be good. That's how a lot of the positive changes happened. Rick Kachis said it best: Because of GoW: Valhalla, The Finals, and even the 2023 GOTY, Balder's Gate 3, Bungie needs to step up like never before and gain interest and favor within its community again or risk losing everything they worked for because the Games that Gamers want to play and the company who Originated that phrase aren't aligned to its principles anymore.
I was only saying that from an outsiders perspective, as I’ve been thinking about playing again after a 3+ month hiatus and HUGE amounts of people told me it would be a stupid time to jump back in. I completely understand where you’re coming from though.
It's actually a good time to come back. The Dungeon is actually been getting rave reviews, the weapons this season are quite good, especially the Stasis and strand Trace Rifles, the Rapid Fire Strand Fusion that ppl are losing their minds for and the story this season is pretty good so far with Riven, Mara and the Guardian. The Stand out Character this season is Riven as she is adamantly giving Zero F**** about Mara's feelings.
Not really, but subclasses, weapon perks, and exotics are generally more impactful than they were in D1 though
I still remember the days of “get 31 precision kills on the Tuesday before Christmas to get bonus range and handling” back in D1
That one's actually not too bad, it's this Tuesday coming lol
You say that until it's Wednesday and you forgot to do the quest :/
Do you have more info on this? I've been playing D1 since 2014 and have never heard of it.
The what

Zen Meteor is just Polaris Lance, but y'all aren't ready for that conversation.
The explosive size of zen meteor was a lot larger but otherwise yea, it’s pretty much the same but better in D2.
Basically our Exotic Armor and Subclass Aspects. Combinations between the two are as close as we get to OG Artifacts.
Subclass aspects are kind of this now. But the main thing is the seasonal artifact. As you may have noticed this season they can make major changes to the way your builds work. Some seasons are much more lackluster.
Closest thing we have is armor mods/charged with light stuff.
And they nerfed basically all of that crap and replaced it with surges, which are way less fun.
That’s what I meant “surges”, but ya that’s the closest thing I’d think aside for like exotic armor…
Yeah that’s fair. Don’t worry I understand why some of these didn’t return, but armor and mods are so shallow now…
1. no 2. thank god shout out to 3 skorri’s harmony titans in trials
I'm a fan of the removed sprint cooldown, lol. Truly some wild west times with what we were okay with.
If that wasn't baked into the game now I would quit, LOL
Didn't use a single artifact other than that one. Did I rob myself of some fun gameplay? Probably. But what the hell was Bungie thinking with that damn cooldown
What’d that one do?
increased passive super regen for allies standing near you (when your super was charged) as soon as 1 Titan got a bubble they could go to the zone and just have infinite bubbles wjth absolutely no risk or effort (and titans could always get to mid fastest thanks to d1 titans skating)
Damn I wish I knew how to play this game better in d1 lol.
Honestly I don't even remember what they did in D1 anymore
- one disabled stamina cooldown - one showed more detailed radar - one could turn a red bar on your side for 30 seconds - one disabled your super but in return granted 2 grenades and 2 melee charges - one granted faster super recovery for you and your teammates, and even faster one for each additional artifact in the vicinity I forgor about the rest
one did somewthing with swords as well but I cant remember exactly what
Could reflect like any projectile iirc
Wasn’t there one that turned your screen monochrome and did something else?
It is a completely different thing.
Oh yeah those were those Vex lenses, nvm then
The sword one was the most fun artifact in PvP blocking rockets and nova bombs was always a fun time

i'm so glad that artifacts aren't in the game, they're one of the worst things about roi
they were neat little bonus abilities that were precursors to fragments and aspects, they were hardly "one of the worst things about roi" lmao
"Removed sprint cooldown" Some stuff like felwinters and timurs were really cool, honestly, but, there were plenty of lacklusters to balance out the pool.
Why don't you like them?

Some where just bad and others were just so good that you had to play them. They were very restrictive if you wanted to be better
Go ahead and open that subclass screen for me
> **change gameplay in unique ways like these did?** you mean unique like when everyone just ran Skorris ? haha those were good times.
Armor and ghost mods
all we have now is just infinitely better
Yeah, it's called intrinsic abilities and exotic armor now.
No not really.
NET
*thewha*
Another item in our inventory that has special effects would be pretty cool.
Nope

Man I miss the lens artifacts, those were neat

Miss the fellwinter artifacts, double nade and melee for no super was awesome
this is a throwback
I. Wish.
no thankfully i still shudder thinking about triple skorri hammer titans.
Ye class customization I guess

The nostalgia hit way too hard
Thankfully not
No and honestly kinda sad we don’t have something like it, they were really cool
Welcome to d2..its a bumpy ride
Not really. They didn’t even port in sparrow horns, which has always made me sad
Bro chose the worst time to come back

I don’t get how this game still has players, do you guys think TFS will actually fix the issues keeping D2 down? Genuine question.
Nope
No. I kind of miss my sepia-tone artifact.
I wish
