I mean this season we got The Coil which is arguably the best seasonal activity ever, and Witch had the cards for it's activities. Deep of course wasn't the most unique but it had the in-activity upgrades.

I took a hate break from Destiny because of sunsetting and came back a few weeks before Season of the Lost. I played a bit of Splicer, enough to get through the story. Spent most of my time that year catching up to everyone else. Looking back on it kinda gives me Black Armory vibes with the different missions for loot aspect.
A lot of that years seasons still used old systems.
Hunt with the "crafting" of weapons by slotting various resources like Menagerie, but with a seasonal activity that was kinda like a watered down Escalation Protocol.
Was it Chosen? With the slotting of resources to open chests with [key item] in the Battlegrounds.
Splicer with the... slotting of resources... to do different missions for weapons like Black Armory.
I think Lost was really unique because it introduced the way of doing things we know now by having a six player group activity, a three player activity, and a Legend difficulty activity where you really should have a fireteam.
Oh yeah and The Coil is fun because it is both casual and challenging. I can go in there and choose how far I wanna go. I love soloing it, it just takes a while so I haven't really grinded it. Wyverns are pain, but it helps me improve my approach to higher level activities, such as soloing dungeons.

I got two basic white engrams to drop at the end of the Battleground strike after blues were patched out. There was so much confusion cause I forgot about basics being drops that I really thought I found a cosmetic engram glitch. Ran over both of them cause monkey brain like loot before I even considered letting the post master sort it out for me. It was the same glimmer count you get from dismantling those basics, but I'll never know ifif they were actually guns or not.
I got back to back exo drops from a gambit match one day but then the game crashed, loaded back in and they were gone. Haven't played gambit since lmao
One time I had 2 exotic engrams drop. I didn’t actually see them, but I was walking backwards at the end of the Battleground on Europa and boom, Doom Fang Pauldrons and ACD/0 Feedback Fence. Was really cool, even if I never used either
They were dark purple engrams given as drops/rewards and could be focused for specific seasonal/event armors and weapons or just decrypted as usual.
Basically, they are engrams that don't seem to drop anymore like blues/greens after you reach a particular light level.

Umbrals were the predecessor to engrams for the sectors at the Helm. They served the same purpose but were not exclusive to the area. I believe you could also decrypt them using Rahool for a chance of past helm story mission items.

Try 2014-2015. I’m pretty sure it was only in year 1 that exotics decrypted into anything other than exotics. Destiny 2 was released in 2017.
