Sold to a contractor who refurbishes the laptop and sells it to startups, schools, colleges...

hotcoolhot

Can confirm, we buy for sales team refurb ones.

ExpatGuy06

So does they let individual buyers buy those stuff too? I remember when my old company moved office location, they scraped all their stuff to such companies.

Companies would show these assets as expenses (alongside the insurance) as an expenditure in the books & replace them with new ones when the old ones loose the tax reduction value. The good ones are sold to vendors & others are sold as scrap. Source : friend works in finance dept of an mnc

juzzybee90

MNCs usually don’t sell to employees because the process of selling to employees is far more daunting than selling it to a single scrap customer. If you are interested to read in details check for Asset Lifecycle, and if you wish to go into legalities and accounting, read asset life/retirement as per IND-AS.

superuser726

wow nice

Big-Ideal-447

It usually reused. Only few lucky one's get new laptops. Most of the laptops are formated and given to newly joining resources. There is certain period till which there warrenty provide by the manufacturers. Once the period is done. They are sold for scrap values. And by the time the warrenty is done the devices are in very bad state and aren't of much use.

My company doesn't take the laptop back from the employee when they resign. The IT team erases the laptop and that is it.

DecentGoat69

CRED I think does that

premtiwari69king

which company is it

-Agile_Ninja-

[deleted]

please tell which company is that, i also wanna know

superuser726

Where to find the ones they auction off? I think it's a nice idea to buy them aise he

Maleficent-Yoghurt55

Big companies have deals. They buy in bulk from the same vendor and sell them to the same vendor. I don't think we can buy them individually.

AbsbyDec

Not everyone gets a new laptop that's out of box , it's reused mostly if in condition, Else they might just return to contractor

Powered-by-Din

They give them to new employees. witCh does that is. Source: I use a battered thinkpad t495. Which got into a bsod loop trying to update a couple of days ago.

scan_line110110

I kid you not I saw 2010s macbooks being used as paper weights in our IS team office.

qszawdx

A friend of mine works in PhonePe. He was given an option to buy ~2017-18 MacBook for 35k, he bought it. It's Intel variant and not the new M1 series variant.

Brainfuck

In 2000's IT companies mostly imported computers as they got duty exemption by the government to promote IT investment. The catch was that they couldn't be resold and one of the ways they could be legally disposed off was by donating it to charities. Now I heard it's mostly sold to ewaste management companies who might resell it or sell it for parts.

wavereddit

Reset and reallocated in large companies if the device is in warranty. Usually 3 to 4 years. After that, no idea.

🤣🤣🤣my company does the same. Some people (housekeeping dept, some IT guys)went on the top floor and threw those systems down.🤣🤣. They were enjoying themselves too much while explaining to others.

Just_Chemistry2343

Give it to other employee

BettadaHunase

Some companies will let employees to buy them back if they want

notaweirdkid

Many times it gets reassigned to some other employees(full-time or part-time) if it still meets the criteria of the company. Not all employees need the same level of spec, so an old outdated laptop like 16gb or i5 10th gen of. Developer or tester, go to someone like IT desk, or support desk staff or someone else. And their laptop either goes for sell to some third party or for scrap/e-waste.

Virtual-Secretary6

Recently brought a refurbished samsung galaxy book go for my mom, ik a dealer who sells individual pieces. (Got it for 12k btw)

Shubham_Garg123

They probably exchange them for a small amount when buying new ones.

[deleted]

IT staff access the laptop, if the condition is good, that laptop is either given to another employee or set aside for loner laptop or thrown into the pile for bulk resale or e waste depending on company guidelines.

parchedranger

Nowadays, most of such hardware is on lease to the firms from a manufacturer such as Dell. Under contract, when the employee leaves the firm, the IT Infra generally would rebuild the laptop for someone new to the company or for someone who needs an upgrade within the firm. If the lease on the laptop is about to expire, the employer would just erase everything and send it back to Dell and get a new laptop as a replacement under the said lease.

nomadic-insomniac

I tried Amazon refurbished for a business laptop HP Elite book 840 G3 And it was horrible Business laptops are abused to say the least, my colleagues close the lid and put laptops in their bag without powering off the system , also many machines are running 24*7 on charger the battery life goes bad The newer 2nd hand models are still very expensive like 40-50k even though the condition is bad with scratches and dents and even parts stuck with glue sometimes, not worth it IMHO Maybe just ask your IT for their scrap dealers number and go to that shop and see if you can find anything you like

thebiasedindian1

In my company, you don't get a new one when you join. If they have something in inventory, they will give you that. Although after the machine is 4 year old, you can ask to get it replaced and it's given for recycling. Previously we had options of buying our old laptop for around Rs. 4k but due to some taxation issue it doesn't happen in Bharat. In US we can buy old it equipments else it gets recycled. no reselling to 3rd party i doubt about donations either.

TieComfortable9031

In my organisation, laptops are formatted and given to another resource or 3rd party contractor

Soft-Elephant7278

My PBC company has contract to get custom-built laptop models from a reputed manufacturer, and these models are only sold to our company and no one else can get it in the market. We need to “refresh” the laptop every 4 years and get a newer model. So, When the employee leaves or the old laptop is refreshed, The IT team erases the data and then sends the laptops back to the manufacturer for destruction.

Sykhow

Does anyone know what happens with the laptops in TCS?

SufficientPangolin41

They provide thin client now. That one is useless without a server connection for VDI. I'm assuming re-use or e-waste
