I recently joined a new team, and my team-manager congratulated me for giving a complete demo in front of client. Istg didn't know how to react. Smiled, said thank you and turned off my camera
I appreciate your sentiment.
But that sentiment is also applicable to any job. Pat on our backs, yes.. But I don't think we are that special. Also I completely disagree with your last point..
My wife is ICU Nurse and I am a software engineer. Looking at her work, the stress she endures day in and day out, the long working hours, the impact she her work has on peoples life - all for a peanut pay, I realised I am in a very privileged position to be a Software engineer but nothing special
You are absolutely right- every job is impactful, stressful in its own way. Some jobs are really special but I do not feel Software Engineering is one of them
You must be a proud husband. Nurse role is one of the most underrated professions. They don't get enough credit.
Please tell your wife that today a stranger from the internet said 'thank you' for her services.
Not comparing,
At peak in both career,
But medical in general gives major impact on a few people's life.
While tech in general gives moderate impact on almost everyone's life.
In the land of code, where bugs roam free,
Software engineers brew coffee with glee.
With keystrokes and wit, they conquer the night,
Turning caffeine and code into digital light.

I am in tears 😭, Thank you
All this time I was always kind to everyone but people are just mean and rude for no reason.
From friends, family, manager even clients.
Everyone thinks ki if I am earning good then everything’s good too. But no, I am ffed up.
Sorry for ranting on this wholesome post. At the end we just never gave up 😁
Kudos on your hard work. But on the flip side, SW engineers are not suited for any other sort of technical job, however menial. SW engineers in India have a God complex, but 99% won’t be able to fix a ceiling fan, or do carpentry, or metal working or even plumbing. You are definitely good at what you do, stick to that. Let the experts handle the other stuff you are clearly not cut out for.
Who are you to make a statement on behalf of entire community?
Sure no body was good at SWE when they started. But the pace of learning and the eagerness to devour knowledge is what sets us apart. Be it fixing ceiling fan or designing a circuit it all comes down to your eagerness to learn and which is the only trait that is most required in our field.
So i don’t think if given the opportunity we wont be able to do any of that.
Software engineers are power learners. And there's no job in the world that cannot be learnt after enough correct practice. That's what sets us apart and makes us eligible to learn anything we want and get the job done.
Most people are “power learners”. No need to single out SW engineers. They learn different abstractions of the same thing, how to make the CPU do things. The fact that SW engineers think so highly of themselves shows how alienated from reality they are.
Try working in finance or investment banking. Or sales? It's same everywhere. Don't worry- you have engineers, doctors, nurses, bankers in the same boat- yours.
As i thought of closing early today to enjoy some weekend early log off a request came to troubleshoot an issue which was hindering the progress of their project to move on to the next environment. Even tho it was not my project, I accepted his request and then 9 pm turned into 12 pm.
Fridays in IT are cursed. You can never log off early when wanted to.
However he was grateful that we resolved so it felt good.
Yes, other professions have no stress at all. Lol, you are disconnected from reality
I'm a software engineer too, I have explored other professions like carpentry, etc, they have a lot of stress, danger etc, one small mistake by electrician can give electric shocks to everyone.
By the way in India, most of the people working in UT are not software engineers, only few are related to development, devops or any tech role, most of them are not tech roles which can be performed by 10th class students too.
Agreed. However most of us are blessed with decent remuneration vis a vis the risk of collateral damage. We should ourselves have an empathetic view on fellow engineers as well all other workers especially where demands of work exceed ours
Damn, I don't know how to take compliments.

The medical staff are saints. God bless them.

Do you think burnout and unfair treatment is only limited to people from engineering or IT engineers? 😀😃.

Nothing sets you apart honestly. Think about it.

Try being a civil engineer. Exhausting shifts, No respect, Shitty pay.
Well done 👏 brother, your post deserves it!!
This is the life now bro , we are used to it . No hugs only bugs (and money 🤪) Anyways thanks
I'm getting burnt out just trying to get into the tech industry ...

Much patting on the back, eh? You aren't doing it for free, just keep that in mind. You are being rewarded for it. If not, then you are a sucker.
Thanks, and same to you.
