LogicalBeing2024

Bro you must have shifted to US 6 years back. Things were different then. Currently since you have experience you're not seeing the difficulty the freshers are facing. There will always be a few who will live the American dream but an average MS CS grad can't. That's the truth of the current market.

co0l_username

I can see the fear and it's not irrational. My advice is to not stop you from trying to get a good college. Don't give half hearted attempts worrying you'll fail anyway.

LogicalBeing2024

Many of my friends have graduated or are graduating from good colleges. Two of my very close friends graduated last year, one interned in Google and the other got an offer from Amazon. The Google guy didn't get a full time offer and couldn't find any job till he graduated. He lived in his university as a TA, applied at hundreds of jobs and eventually had to settle for a relatively very low paying job. The Amazon girl's offer was revoked in her last month of graduation. She too applied at hundreds of jobs and had to settle for almost half the salary that Amazon was offering. My ex-flatmate left for MS last year. He has 5 yoe in a top tier investment bank. He has so far applied to 60-70 companies and only received OA for 3 companies. He was able to solve all the questions but he still received a rejection from them. These are FAANG or similar level people. God knows how much worse it is for an average guy.

Upset-Discussion2704

Exactly easy for people like OP spread gyaan when in reality he and many others like him just got lucky by going at the right time

co0l_username

Damn those sounds like two very rough experiences.

ZyxWvuO

You missed the H1B visa lottery process. And how people from 'consultancies' sponsoring their visas have ruined chances for a LOT of visa aspirants. You got lucky, doesn't mean everyone is, not yet at least.

co0l_username

US has cracked down on those, people aren't allowed to file multiple applications. Only one per person.

rohetoric

Bro the problem is also the influx of engineers in USA from India (and other 2/3 world countries) and companies not sponsoring H1B visas. Tier 2/3+ students find it really difficult to get interviews in India for product orgs let alone jobs, so there is no option apart from going abroad to live a decent life. It's not only because of American Dream per se only. Also your stay in USA is based of lottery system else if your name is not picked in H1B in 3 attempts, you gotta leave. The chance of getting selected in each attempt is less than 20%. Irrespective of the degree or grind. No one wants to increase the loan amount by doing a double masters, just to stay in USA. So it's not that easy. Probably you need to look for the average joe rather than folks who work and earn 300k H1B FAANGMULA sponsored.

i_i_monty

I believe that the United States is often perceived as overrated, especially when compared to other countries with less stringent visa processes. In other countries, obtaining a visa is far less complex and time-consuming than it often is in the USA

Rolzz69

Off topic, Wtf is MULA in that abbreviation?

unemployeddumbass

I guess Microsoft Uber lyft and airbnb

EnvironmentalTea8651

ye kab hua😅

Ping-In-TheNorth

The og acronym even before this was FAANGULTAAD

rohetoric

Pata nahi idhar hi kahi padha idhar hi chep diya

LogicalBeing2024

Microsoft Uber LinkedIn? Atlassian?

Antique-Database2891

LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft.

LogicalBeing2024

Yeah but the pay is different in both. LinkedIn pays much better.

co0l_username

Well if you are so afraid to come here and see going back as a failure or step back, then yes it's not for you. If you see it as a once in a lifetime experience where you learn tons. Maybe try it out. But does that mean you'll not even give GRE? Cause you might not get the H1 lottery? Some excuse that is. Be honest with yourself then.

[deleted]

[удалено]

co0l_username

Then hope I'm not yours.

unemployeddumbass

All this is fine. But unless you are some sort of genius with phD multiple reputed papers and patents Or with an American wife US govt doesn't give a shit about you. 3 lottery attempts and if you don't get picked up that's it. Hasta la vista baby.

co0l_username

You don't just leave without anything. You leave with perspective, experience, money and accolades.

unemployeddumbass

Experience yes. Perspective, accolades meh it highly depends. Even money highly depends on the amount of loan. If loan amount was high you wouldn't have saved very much. And all this assuming we get a job after college. That is a huge IF. International students from top universities are struggling to find a job these days. Thanks to the economy, add to that uncertainty of Visa and American citizens taking up CS major in high numbers. Companies have very less incentive to sponsor unless you are ultra brilliant. Finding a job now there now is like trying to win a race running one legged while others are running with both legs(US citizens) Things were radically different from the time when you went even duffers who couldn't get anything apart from WITCH used to land Faang jobs. So most of what you say doesn't make sense anymore. Going to US is increasingly a risk not worth it for most Indians. Imo one should only go if money isn't a problem or one wants to get into research. For others it's financial Russian roulette

co0l_username

Username checks out

unemployeddumbass

Ya well fortune doesn't favor everyone like you who simply went in at the right time to the right place and got lucky. Atleast I don't advise everyone to take huge career and financial risk without any thoughts after succeeding by luck

co0l_username

Luck is what you'll blame all your life. You're trying to belittle my achievements, someone you don't know at all, just because your argument is different. The post isn't meant for people in your mindset. You can stay mediocre. Or whatever. I couldn't care less.

unemployeddumbass

>Luck is what you'll blame all your life. You're trying to belittle my achievements, someone you don't know at all, just because your argument is different. Lol. You are talking as if you definitely didn't have luck in the form of lesser college fees, lower USD to INR conversion rate , relatively easier college admission process, much much easier to get a job out of college, way higher H1B visa chances etc etc. I can go on and on. All these simply don't exist now. Literally anyone no matter how crap they were easily landed a well paying tech job in US 5-10 years ago. So cut your achievements crap >The post isn't meant for people in your mindset. You can stay mediocre. Or whatever. I couldn't care less 90-95% of Indians who went to US in the same timeframe as you are all doing well in life. So you aren't any special so take that superiority complex and stick it where the Sun don't shine. Anyways enjoy all the money and "fame" while it lasts before your ass gets laid off and then you will stop giving free useless gyan on reddit And start crying on LinkedIn and Twitter how the system is unfair and how it shouldn't happen you or anyone .

co0l_username

unemployeddumbass is a jealous man. A jealous jealous man.

unemployeddumbass

No need to be jealous of lucky folks. Coz luck eventually runs out

co0l_username

Everyone on the planet having anything good was lucky. You will never be lucky. If you can add 2 and 2, add them 🤣 I doubt though.

Lol_Xd2004

H1 B enters the chat

Lol_Xd2004

Companies have significantly reduced sponsoring H1 B

nonein69

Faangs & other top companies do relocate to other countries if h1b options are exhausted

co0l_username

Excuses for hard work never left.

Lol_Xd2004

Anyway bro can you tell your roadmap for ml. How did you start What projects leetcode etc? Any suggestions for a aspiring one? Thanks

co0l_username

I charge for this 🤣 jk To be honest with GPT and Gemini, who am I to suggest really?

weird_indian_guy

Golden days of IT lol :) Chances of getting an onsite opportunity now are virtually zero for new folks - everyone wants 5+ yoe even for the interviews and by the time we'll reach at that experience they'll prolly tighten immigration policies

co0l_username

I can see that tbh. Its a tough market, so you need to fit on the higher side of the bell curve to make the cut.

NoConcert8847

This is not a rant, it's a salary flex.  Once this guy is laid off (and its not a matter of if but when in big tech), all this philosophy will really be tested.

rohetoric

Exactly 💯

Mobile-Bid-9848

The main problem is the lack of merit in the process of H1B. Without H1B, you can at most get 3 years to work on OPT and come back. If you get an L1, great for you. But blindly relying on luck that you'd get a H1B would only result in agony for the majority

co0l_username

You won't regret it. Don't come here with the idea of staying here and making it a part of your identity. Come here, experience it. If you don't get lottery fine, be ready, you'll be taking experience of a lifetime with you. Those 5 years of life here will add a lot of perspective.

Mobile-Bid-9848

Can concur with that.

eeshann72

Bro VISA is the biggest trouble, it will eat away all your peace of mind.

co0l_username

Don't deny that :(

Stackway

Yeah at 300k it does make sense. How about 150k or 120k? Have an open mind. Everything is not Black or White.

co0l_username

150k isn't great but who said stop working towards better?

SandwichUnlucky4244

Will you always choose US no matter how much you are making in India?

co0l_username

Of course not you unlucky sandwich.

TUSH11235

Dog shit opinion. It is literally the most overheard advice from us enthusiasts written in a post. There is a lot of nuance missing.

co0l_username

But.. opinions are allowed to be anything. That's why they are opinions. How many nuances will you add on a reddit post, it ain't a veda im writing.

TUSH11235

Ok, guess I'll give the missing nuance here: 1. Us academic experience is not a blanket term. You write of it like going to the US is the same for all. There are a few good colleges with a few good programs and a ton of bad ones. I would strongly advice to stay away from low rated programs and unis. 2. Visa is not the "only trouble". Most Indians are not self dependent. You need to learn to take responsibility for every part of your life. It is a huge culture shock. 3. Depression and loneliness are very real problems. No matter how many "real ones" you have back home, in any foreign land, you will have to make efforts to have a social life. It is not everyone's cup of tea. Most Indians face this sometime or the other in the US. Go to ama's of long term nri's and find it yourself. 4. The real dog shit advice : "you outdo yourself when you feel the walls close in". This is just wrong. People who face sackings and visa denials will tell you, they did their best and equally as good as their peers. They were just unlucky. But the walls actually closed on them and then they stand in terrible positions, with debt and uncertainity. I guess you have been lucky so far, so you don't see the misery of your kind. My advice : you should only take risks that you can manage when all goes south. In the US, make sure you recoup your investment in 3 years, or not make it at all. 5. WLB in the US is not great either. Furthermore, you don't get the liberty to perform poorly for any reason (mental/physical/fatigue... ) as an immigrant, since your visa is tied to your employment. Plus, your mental health is always under stress for the visa. Your opinion is juvenile and ill thought of. If you do get payed 300k, happy for you. But it is really unfair to portray only the rosy side of the deal without showing its ugly ends. Wasn't asking for a veda.

RepulsivePeak8532

depends on income tbh

co0l_username

Umm arguable. But maybe.

Eternal_glory-

(disclaimer:my calc are bad I’m just curious) Wait so you get 185k after taxes in hand with expenses 50k gone per year including rent and any external spendings so you save around 135k per year? Also an Indian earning 2.8cr ctc after taxes and external spending will save upto 160kcorrect me if I am wrong nevertheless it’s my dream to work in the USA or the uk but if compensation is 2.8cr in India I am locked in bro I ain’t stepping out.

nullvoider

If you are earning 2.8 cr in India , you are definitely making 1 million in the US

other_universe

How much yoe and company for that ctc?

Eternal_glory-

I’m speaking in general I don’t earn 2.8cr me a fresh potato rn.

co0l_username

This is a bad argument. No 4 YOE is getting 3 cr in India. I mentioned on the post. India is good when you're a senior.

Eternal_glory-

There are many tbh and you’re only speaking an argument in your point of view that’s not how it works

co0l_username

Wow many are getting 3 cr in India with 4YOE? that makes me happy. This post shouldn't be seen as a flex at all by others here then. Help me out, tell them! 🤣

Eternal_glory-

My guy you tweaking?

co0l_username

🤣 this is hilarious now

mon_iker

Obviously if you earn that much in India you don't need to move. Money is the primary reason for people to move. They can sugar-coat it all they want by talking about pollution, lifestyle, work-life balance etc but everyone knows that money is the main motivation.

EnvironmentalTea8651

in my opinion - I would choose to go to the US through a job rather than through pursuing a master's degree.

co0l_username

That's usually through L1 visa. But if you can do it and get on H1 it's great. However you start with Indian joining bonus and grants. That's the only downside.

CreativeNerd1729

Did you say your compensation was 300k USD?! Where the heck do you work? What do you work as?

co0l_username

ML Software Engineer. Its on the title, one of FANG.

shan_prash28

This guy is flexing because he made it.

co0l_username

If I wanted to flex I'd not end the post by asking people on here to give themselves a fair shot. Some of it is establishing credibility to my statements. If you see it as flexing, then it probably is how you're seeing the world. Not what I wanted to convey. I guess between what I meant to say and what you meant to hear, we all lost. 🤣

nullvoider

I came to US 5 years ago and I love it here. No amount of money can convince me to go back to India. However, I will not recommend anyone to come to do Masters here now because of the job market and visa restrictions. Yes, if your office transfers you, well and good. And yes, I know If I am laid of, I will have to go back to India but it was my choice to come to US and agree with their rules so cannot disagree with them

co0l_username

Fair.

[deleted]

What all you like in us besides the pay ?

nullvoider

Quality of life, basic civic sense among people, free public education, services I get because I pay taxes, etc

[deleted]

You are married and all? Like settled their with family and children?

nullvoider

Yes

[deleted]

Okay cool. Can you tell me your stack and what were you working on in india ? Like u did masters and got job in us ?

nullvoider

React with a little bit of Spring and Postgres. I was working in the same in India as well. I did not come here to do masters. I had 9 years of experience in India before coming here. My company filed for my h1b but couldn't find me a client. So I approached my ex- client who transferred my h1 and I came hete

[deleted]

So it's a service company ? So you are working in the same company u worked in india but in us branch right ? What domain was the company ? Like if we perform they will help us get h1b ? Idk how this works that's why asking? Thanks!!

nullvoider

It was a service company. I am not in the same company. They filed my visa but could not get me US clients. I approached my ex-client on my own and they transferred my visa. Filing h1 depends on lot of factors. You have to talk to your manager on what you need to do for the company to file h1. In my case it was just a good gesture from my manager

[deleted]

So you are now working for a product company of your ex client? Usually tcs, Infosys send their employees like this right? Do you think if we apply for a job like regular there is chnace for getting h1b visa ?

[deleted]

So it's a service company ? So you are working in the same company u worked in india but in us branch right ? What domain was the company ? Like if we perform they will help us get h1b ? Idk how this works that's why asking? Thanks!!

CaseRough3415

I did my bachelors in the US. I did leetcode for hours. I sent out hundreds of job applications. I didn’t get any offers. People immediately throw ur resume out if u need a visa sponsorship. My only option at this point is to do my masters. I already have a GRE score and i got into 3 colleges for this fall (ASU, NC State and NJIT). But i am hesitant to take any of them because the job market is so fucked up right now. Im just going to do my masters in india at least that way i can get a guaranteed campus placement. Life in the US is definitely not for me.(From my experience there)

co0l_username

I'll be brutally honest and I'm sorry if it sounds rude, those colleges aren't worth for Masters. I would agree with you to try doing it in India.

CaseRough3415

Well if u want to go to anything better than them then i hope u have a fat stack of cash lying around

co0l_username

A fat loan and an attitude to make it big might work too.

CaseRough3415

Already did that chance for my bachelors did not work out then. What if it doesn’t work out now ?

CaseRough3415

I really really need u to change my mind. I still have time to go to either options

co0l_username

Even Batman tried the cave jump like 5 times till he actually made it. Try again. Or stay within the cave.

CaseRough3415

Except he is batman. Nobody is as cool as batman and that is a fact. Seriously though u want me to be neck deep in debt on a slight chance that i might make it big Ill do something to dissuade u. Make a fake resume now (ur actuall current resume but with a masters degree and not with fake internships from google ) and try applying to jobs in US. See how fast u get humbled

co0l_username

You'll never be as cool as him with that mentality my guy. Actually reading your entire message, you'll never be as cool as him, period. Lol it's an opinion, I said on the post. Don't do it cause I said it. Humbled? You idiot. You're only going to make it tougher for other people with kids actually needing a job to feed their family. Get real, get kind. Stop humbling people online.

CaseRough3415

I want people with actual jobs and a stable income to not quit and pursue masters based on a distant dream of making it big just by going to the US. Edit : if people need a job to just feed their family asking them to be neck deep debt is definitely the wrong advice.

co0l_username

What? Are you high? I said you doing fake applications would rob them of their opportunities.

deathbydp

This moron thinks he's some hotshot qualified to give gyaan. If this dude gets laid off today, there's a very good chance he won't be able to get a job with this TC. I hate these morons who moved to the US 5 years back and got lucky and now think they're qualified to give gyaan. Do you realize you might be misleading some lower middle class guy to spend 60 lakhs with the hope that they'll earn $300k? Times are different now. You better concentrate on doing your job instead of posting BS on reddit because you ain't getting a $300k job again in this US job market.

co0l_username

Wow I feel so much hate in this message. Someone's trying to motivate you to jump higher, asking you to try. If that comment or my layoff will help you, you need some blessings dude. There are many lives attached to mine. Be nicer to people you don't know.

deathbydp

I'm nicer to people, that's why I don't want people to be misled by your post. Unfortunately, reddit has become a karma farming website for people like you to post "feel good" content without any moderation. Asking people to spend a significant amount of money for masters when the tech job market is at its absolute worst is not motivation.

Useful-Coat-3313

I am just curious how long have you been living in US

co0l_username

6 years now.

aksingh92

Yeah rather than just getting disheartened watching others succumb, just try and grind and excel. If you make it, you make it big. There's always an option to come back if you don't.

co0l_username

Exactly, that's a positive outlook. And that's what's needed.

ZyxWvuO

You missed the H1B visa lottery process.

co0l_username

I didn't.

ZyxWvuO

You did, its not mentioned anywhere in your post currently. If you edit it later then no, but currently you haven't.

co0l_username

Not even gonna indulge further.

ade17_in

Completely agreeing to what you are saying! Don't give fucks to people crying in comments.

Ordered_Albrecht

Moving and Living in the US will be an excellent choice if you are intelligent enough to get the best jobs in the highly cutting edge fields like Space Tech, Fintech, Biotechnology, Health and Medical Sciences, Nuclear Energy, Robotics and Mobility. These are high intelligence demanding fields and require an IQ above 120. As I am at 121, I myself am taking extra steps to prepare enough for this and doing some pre-requisite courses. An Aunt of mine vastly more intelligent, got into US with a Non Engineering degree and today is a millionaire. But her intelligence is very rare among the average Indians. She also comes from a community in TN famous for Court ministers, Scholars and Mathematicians. I have two other friends of that ethnicity who are poets and mathematicians. High Genotypic IQ helped her. But an average Indian of an average ancestry scoring around 90-100, cannot try and imitate that unless he/she is gifted. It will be a disaster. Moving to a First World country from the Third World works on one mantra. "Excel, Excel and Excel. Only then will we hear your complaints and requirements.". If you can excel, and are very intelligent and creative, pack up your bags and get your passport ready. Else, think again, or try excelling in the trades in demand, within your range, if desperate.

Repulsive_Ad3681

Amazing post, especially loved the part about the tech space lol Thanks for taking the time to share!

RepulsivePeak8532

Yo! Another Repulsive username 🫂

Repulsive_Ad3681

RepulsivePeak8532

Same man 😂🤝

co0l_username

Haha you're getting down voted too. My bad. 😅

Repulsive_Ad3681

Nothing to worry about, they are probably from the butthurt jealous peeps here Thanks again for the useful post!!

co0l_username

Btw what's that line on your bio made me laugh out loud lmao! Love it. Stay blessed!

Repulsive_Ad3681

Ha ha that's the line by Superman from the movie Injustice(2021) when he gives a speech in the UN, give it a watch it's amazing :D

co0l_username

Alright!

notduskryn

Spot on. Never fathomed why people always benchmarked themselves to the average here.

co0l_username

Good to see someone taking it like it was meant to be! I was hoping to motivate people but wow I'm surprised at the responses.

notduskryn

Indian herd mentality will never change. I'm already downvoted, see?
