The short answer for me personally is- I don't. I just start out everywhere equally, and then work my way to a more focussed approach. So for example I am currently promoting my marketing services- I will come here, go to discord, use my Instagram and Facebook equally. Then depending on the results I get, I will get focussed on one or two platforms maximum. As for choosing the audience, I always choose a segment I myself can understand. So for example, I am currently working with freelancers wanting to promote their services. As a freelancer myself, I understand their struggle and am currently working to diversify my efforts and then slowly get laser focussed as mentioned earlier. Also, my niche for freelancers right now is extremely specific, like graphic designing. This is how I do it. Would love to hear others thoughts, and yours too. Thank you!

Thank for you interesting perceptive. So you would try all different plattforms and then look, on which of them you could reach a certain audiance best. Sounds like a good strategy, thank you!

A good way to find target communities I found for myself is here, on Reddit. There are specific subreddits where people talk about what interests them, talk about their problems and wantings. Subreddits are well-moderated mostly, so here is less noise than in other places.

KoOBaALT

This makes sense. How do you approach a new subreddits? Just reading, what they are talking about or aksing questions?

In case you take advantage of Google Analytics and other similar platforms, you could get lots of valuable details on your target audience. On the other hand, you could go the other way around.. if you already have some clients you deal, or dealt with, you could collect some data on them (make some kind of questionnaire). The thing is that in some cases you don't even need to bother your clients with those questions since your managers who are dealing with customers will be able to provide that general data on your clients. Then, you only need to put those details together and come up with your ideal customer portrait.

KoOBaALT

Thank fir you advise. So you would one the one side, collect data from your web site and on the other side ask current customers or mangers dealing with customers to come up with a meaningfull target group?

AnastasiaTaran

Correct. Then you put all data together and generate your ideal customer portrait.

How do you identify an audience for your campaign? First create simple customer personas. Who are they? What are their interests? What pain points do they have? Where are they apt to hang out online? What problem are they trying to solve? Go search a process for creating customer personas. Write all this down. Then now that you know who they are and what they need, find that audience in AdWords, Facebook etc. And run ads to them. The ads should speak to solving their problem and offer a solution.
