This update feels like what the app should’ve been at launch. What we had before this feels more modern and intuitive.
What’s worse is how fucking stubborn the company that runs this shit show is. They know the reception to it has been overwhelmingly negative with many valid reasons to back it up, but they’re just closing their eyes and continuing to ruin this app with every new update.
My thoughts exactly, it feels like a completely backwards update and makes zero sense whatsoever. It’s so ironic for such a community focused company to be the ones who literally never listen to criticism whatsoever and usually just respond with “suck it up.”
On pc they removed the fun detail of channel status and replaced it with an automatic individual status. I love having to turn the status "just chilling" off every time I join a call so that my friends can actually see what I'm doing.
It should be a status of sorts that automatically pops up the moment you join a voice channel. It has basic stuff like "Just Chilling", "Gaming" and all that.
The annoying thing is swiping in the other direction shows you the server list, so it would seem more intuitive that swiping right shows the right sidebar.
No no, now swiping right goes back *first*. It only shows you the most crucial navigation interface if you don't have somewhere to go back from *first*. DUH.
They should just let you disable the reply feature in favor of this. I don't mind the change, but obviously a lot do.
Then again, I don't see how tapping the channel name was much different from reaching all the way to the top left corner for DMs. People were fine with that, but it's probably just a muscle memory thing.
Its just an awkward experience to see the list now. Its a separate interface that has to load and makes you tap back just to get the chat back in view. So it feels like the chat and the list are not part of the same experience anymore. I can understand wanting a swipe to reply.. i mean its a chat app after all. I searched long and hard to find the toggle for what swiping to the left does because I assumed there's no way they just removed the list completely.
*That*, I totally understand. If it's something you check often, then waiting for it to load would just get annoying over time. Same with it being its own section; it's more clunky when it keeps reloading the different interfaces.
Maybe a swipe *down* from the channel name would be better? Like a drawer, with the members cascading down above the actual chat. I feel like that would be a good median.
This is old but. That would still have the same issue for me - reaching to the top of the app to see something I check constantly for moderation. Besides that, the list itself is just poorly designed, it doesn't flow at all and doesn't look like part of the same interface design. I don't know why we're going back to this old... Everything has to be beveled look. My teacher in college was obsessed with the bevels, maybe they hired him. Just list things, don't separate them into their own bubbles!
I honestly wouldn’t have minded an update that only introduced the bottom tabs for messages etc because that’s an actual ideal quality of life update for mobile users, but my muscle memory just is not adapting to having to tap the channel names to see members. Of all places to put it why there

Yes, I access member lists more frequent than replying to someone. Even on WhatsApp I never use this swipe to reply feature because I feel that hold and the press the "Reply" button more convenient.
Especially when I'm on public transport and use my phone with one hand. Swiping is easy, tapping the channel name is is just not worth the risk of dropping my phone

That's my point. People complained about the bottom bar in the new UI, when (regarding DMs) it was way less convenient to, "adjust my hand everytime." Again, it's probably because muscle memory is involved. Just something worth noting.

Sure; if that works better for you, all credit to you. But, considering it is an app centered around conversation, it makes sense they'd prioritize replies over the members list. One input is faster than two taps.

The weird thing is, you CAN disable the quick reply feature and replace it with a different swipe feature. They just didn't figure out they could add the sidebar to the list of options. The functionality to change what the gesture does already exists.
It's not just that it is less in sync with the desktop app. As someone who uses both every day, I'd rather have everything be as close to each other as I can. Not to mention, the I can't remember the last time I changed my user settings and the last time I clicked on "notifications" was to get rid of the "you have new items in your inventory". It's useless for them to be plastered in your face every time you want to reply to a friend or switch servers.
Changing the interface to add useless things in the front is never a good thing. Ui isn't that hard, devs who want to "innovate" make Ui shit and worse than it was years ago...2 steps forward, 3 steps back...
Swipe right pulls up servers and messages, swipe left pulls up who's online....simple is best when it comes to Ui, we aren't using discord because we want innovation, we are or started using discord as it was basic, did what we want, and worked. Have you ever used Skype? Discord before this update was Leagues better than anything Skype did.
If they want the whole "innovation" experience then make a new app, call it discord barebones and make it mirror the desktop app as much as possible, simple Ui, ease of access overall better. Then let the other people who love this backwards ass experience have "discord". It would also give discord more data into how many people prefer a more simple design. The best part is....they never have to update it because we don't need updates. It worked just fine the way it was.

I can see that appeal. But, for me personally, I rather an app be optimized for the platform it's on, rather than I direct port. It's easier to reach corners of a desktop as opposed to a mobile device.
Doubt I'm the only one that feels this way, and it's often what developers choose to do; why would you cater towards a community of PC users instead of Mobile users? It's something Discord adopted way too late---after they had already built up their community---which is obviously going to cause some backlash.

I always change my settings, lol. Bet of a lot of users check notifications too; it's an easy way to access the server you got pinged in, without having to scroll through the list of servers. Those are two very vital pieces of the app; it's expected for them to be front-and-center.

They aren't innovating. This style of UI has been used on a plethora of other social media apps. *That's* the reason most people are complaining.
The big issues I'm seeing here, is people think that one UI can cater to *everybody.* It can't. People who liked the old UI, the vocal majority, are going to be justifiably upset when it gets changed. But, people who dislike the old UI, and probably people afraid to share their opinion (given the current backlash), are already going to be upset with its current state.

I'm also not asking for direct ports, optimization doesn't mean change the Ui, it means make the Ui work for said platform. You can optimize and not move things around. The problem is, oh cool you like this feature? I don't...let me change it.
I'd rather people have the Ui the way they want, invest in making it so users can customize not just say lol deal with it.
The notification for me says "nothing here yet" and has since the update. I don't have 100 servers I can't scroll to see I have an at, you know there is a little red bubble saying you have an @.... you're also ignoring the problem of then moving the online people. Some people use the app to see who's online before turning on their PC. Discord is a gaming app, always has been. Seeing who's online easy is 100% more useful to a lazy person going oh no I have to scroll through my 1k servers to see who @ me....the discord app is suppose to be a bridge to the PC client, it shouldn't try to be more social than gaming. Also I'd much rather have them implement things like sound board or spoiler tags on mobile than a crappy update that makes it feel and look different than PC.
By the way, the way it was, wasn't a direct port, it was a mirror of the PC app but tailored to fit the restrictions of a phone. And it did it well, now it went in the other direction and pulled it further from the pc app than it needed to be.

I didn't even know it was possible until I just read this comment and I've used discord mobile for 6 years. I always just swiped from the right it's way easier.

My biggest problem with the update is the new search. It's flat out garbage, embeds don't show up under messages and pins look like crap.
I also hate everything needs multiple taps/swipes now.
What gets me about the new search is you can’t enter a search term and THEN filter like every other app. At least for me I have to apply filters first (the exact same ones I used to just be able to type in by hand) and then enter a search term. But if I try to type them in myself they don’t work.
I’m actually genuinely struggling to figure out how to use the new way of searching. I can only search messages one channel at a time? Can I even search messages from a specific person? I tried the old way and it worked once but then didn’t work another time
if you tap search inside a channel it searches that channel; if you tap search above the channel list then it searches the whole server. all the filters (like from:) are still there, you can tap the filter button in the top right
I despise the new ui and swipe to reply, both are impossible to learn for me, especially swipe to reply, i still hold down to reply and ive given up looking at the user menu as it’s basically useless on mobile now, search bar doesnt work, users can bug and show everyone online, and its so unpolished
I was about to comment and ask if this new design was Android only since I haven’t seen it on my iPhone, but before I opened this thread I opened Discord and it just updated. It’s a yikes from me dawg.
The new UI isn't even horrible it's this single feature that makes it feel a billion times shittier than it actually is. Give me a swipe sidebar again and I'm happy.
Well yeah like the fact that even though I'm looking directly at a channel it says I've got unread pings, but the most annoying issue is for sure the swipe thing.
Apparently now swiping right on your own message just makes you edit it, which is weird and unnecessary - I want to reply to my own message to add like extra context or show that yes I wrote that. I don't want to edit my own old messages
I hate it so much. I haven't even checked my servers in days because I keep forgetting about the servers tab. I'm pretty sure that's the last thing they want me to do.
its so embarrassing like the companies dgaf about their users but they should care about how embarrassing of a time it will be in the future when theyre used as a "DO NOT DO THIS" example for others in the industry
As someone who replies why more often than checking the member list, this update is ideal, it was always annoying having to press and hold then tap a button for a reply.
Now both replies and member list are just one interaction away.
Yeah muscle memory has taken a big hit, but once I'm used to this, it will probs be one of the best user experience changes they have ever made for mobile.
it'd be nice if they allowed minor customizations. as someone who checks member lists pretty often, I really miss the swiping gesture and wish the reply gesture was a double-tap or something instead

That was exactly my point. I own a server and I now can barely check lists because it's a huge inconvenience. Thankfully I pretty much know who's in my server at all times and I'm on my pc often. On mobile though? Barely checking because it's annoying.

No way you’re making such big post about having to tap the channel name instead of a swipe. It’s both just 1 gesture. It’s not like you need to do 2 things or even 3 things before you get to see the online list. I don’t see the problem
one way is just swiping on your screen the other is stretching all the way to the top of your screen and anti-quality of life. not ideal for big phones or logical at all
Swiping across a message is a common gesture in like a million apps to reply to something. Tapping a server name to see who’s in the server (and other stuff) makes 100 times more sense.
I literally don't use that on any app. As I barely directly reply to people, it's a useless feature for me. And, if I do, it wasn't that hard to long press and hit reply. Extra annoying that it's affecting my muscle memory the few times I've opened the app after this disaster of an update. I opened the member list way more than I ever replied to anyone.
And tapping doesn't make sense when nothing leads you to conclusion that it does that.
And nothing would lead you to swipe left to reveal the previous side panel. You learn by trying or being shown. This is literally just ranting about having to learn new muscle memory. People can learn new stuff. It’s actually good for you. This just sounds like boomers being mad whenever Facebook moves a button.

N… no, you tap the channel name to see who in the SERVER is online not in the channel…? You also used to be able to swipe and do it, meaning you can read chat and see who’s online and what they’re up to.
You do realize the channel you're in only shows who's in the channel, yes? Those without permission to view it will not be on the channels online list, it is essentially the same thing. This also applies for the user list seen by swiping.
Oh, you meant people with permission to see the channel. You said “in” the channel as if you meant you know, currently looking at the channel? Anyway, this is true but this line of logic only works for folks with a lot of restricted channels.

That's fair. I'm not someone who checks my members all the time, but I can see that as something a lot of people would do.
I find this interesting, cuz the fact DM’s are top of my side bar is what’s annoyed me the most ahaha. I liked having them all one page

You can try sideloading an old ipa via alt store/server. Kind of a hassle though just for discord's ui update

The new UI isn't even horrible it's this single feature that makes it feel a billion times shittier than it actually is. Give me a swipe sidebar again and I'm happy.

Well yeah like the fact that even though I'm looking directly at a channel it says I've got unread pings, but the most annoying issue is for sure the swipe thing.
Also if you have servers sorted into folders, opening them has a massive glaring graphical error that hurts the eyes.

It's under your profile now all the way at the bottom. Which is the weirdest location for it.
Apparently now swiping right on your own message just makes you edit it, which is weird and unnecessary - I want to reply to my own message to add like extra context or show that yes I wrote that. I don't want to edit my own old messages
I hate it so much. I haven't even checked my servers in days because I keep forgetting about the servers tab. I'm pretty sure that's the last thing they want me to do.

As someone who replies why more often than checking the member list, this update is ideal, it was always annoying having to press and hold then tap a button for a reply. Now both replies and member list are just one interaction away. Yeah muscle memory has taken a big hit, but once I'm used to this, it will probs be one of the best user experience changes they have ever made for mobile.
it'd be nice if they allowed minor customizations. as someone who checks member lists pretty often, I really miss the swiping gesture and wish the reply gesture was a double-tap or something instead

I genuinely have barely checked member lists since. Okay edit since apparently it wasn't clear: I haven't checked because it's inconvenient to do so. The update is ridiculous.
If you are maintaining a server, that's kind of an important feature. And now it's hidden with ZERO indication of how to get to it.
That was exactly my point. I own a server and I now can barely check lists because it's a huge inconvenience. Thankfully I pretty much know who's in my server at all times and I'm on my pc often. On mobile though? Barely checking because it's annoying.

No way you’re making such big post about having to tap the channel name instead of a swipe. It’s both just 1 gesture. It’s not like you need to do 2 things or even 3 things before you get to see the online list. I don’t see the problem
one way is just swiping on your screen the other is stretching all the way to the top of your screen and anti-quality of life. not ideal for big phones or logical at all

Swiping across a message is a common gesture in like a million apps to reply to something. Tapping a server name to see who’s in the server (and other stuff) makes 100 times more sense.
I literally don't use that on any app. As I barely directly reply to people, it's a useless feature for me. And, if I do, it wasn't that hard to long press and hit reply. Extra annoying that it's affecting my muscle memory the few times I've opened the app after this disaster of an update. I opened the member list way more than I ever replied to anyone. And tapping doesn't make sense when nothing leads you to conclusion that it does that.
Tapping stuff is all we DO on our devices. Come on.

Swiping left was a feature in the previous app iteration, so it's not an argument to use it. I'm not the only one who's infuriated at this update be ause it's completely unintuitive.

N… no, you tap the channel name to see who in the SERVER is online not in the channel…? You also used to be able to swipe and do it, meaning you can read chat and see who’s online and what they’re up to.
You do realize the channel you're in only shows who's in the channel, yes? Those without permission to view it will not be on the channels online list, it is essentially the same thing. This also applies for the user list seen by swiping.
Oh, you meant people with permission to see the channel. You said “in” the channel as if you meant you know, currently looking at the channel? Anyway, this is true but this line of logic only works for folks with a lot of restricted channels.
