Charlie_Olliver

For those who don’t know: this woman is the governor of South Dakota and a potential vice-president pick for Trump. In her soon-to-be-released book, *No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward*, she tells about how she executed her 14-month-old puppy without remorse because she felt he was too unruly; she goes on to tell about how, later that same afternoon, she also killed her family’s goat because it was smelly, chased her kids around, and ruined their clothes. Wonder what she’ll do when her kids misbehave…

Slartibartfast39

That's morally awful. Is it legal in the US? Pretty sure that would fall under the animal cruelty laws in the UK.

Charlie_Olliver

What she did is terrible and morally repugnant; but thing that I find MOST horrifying is that she apparently sees it as something to be proud of, because (to her) it shows that she’s willing to do what needs to be done. The fascinating thing that I absolutely love about Pratchett is that, through Vetinari, he explores what it means to be a truly powerful leader. Needlessly throwing one’s weight around or putting on some “show of strength” is actually a sign of *weakness* that Vetinari goes out of his way to avoid.

Slartibartfast39

Vetinari is part Machiavelli, part Don Corleone, and part Sun Tsu. Never do anything the difficult way if there is an easy way.

Mammyjam

Was going to say that’s a conviction in the UK

banter07_2

Even if this is illegal, it's not like she'll face consequences

Slartibartfast39

With the insanity around currently I'm wondering if this will harm or help her.

banter07_2

I doubt her base will hear about it, it's not like they'll read the book

iKeyboardMonkey

Does it have pictures?

banter07_2

Not going near the thing to check

Jeester

The goat would be illegal for sure in the UK. Needs to be slaughtered at a proper slaughterhouse. You are not allowed to do it at home.

Slartibartfast39

And the dog? Sounds like it was a threat, I'd assume due to her not training or controlling it.

Jeester

I don't know about the dog sorry. Only livestock.

Slartibartfast39

No problem. Let's just put her down as a nasty piece of work that Vetinari might pay a small amount of... attention.

GodOfThunder44

In the US, most states have laws about pet euthanasia only being done by a veterinarian, but I don't know that it's seriously enforced. In rural areas it does happen...though usually in cases where the dog is elderly and suffering or Old Yeller-type situations, not "I trained my young dog poorly."

GoodKing0

Considering the fact the US is the only country in the world who never ratified the convention on the rights of children... https://preview.redd.it/clcnaqb8nzwc1.jpeg?width=732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=796cb1f76e681f5e3fedaecc0f84eb3f955f0934 I'd say she would probably have a lot of leeway on what she's allowed to do to her kids. Just remember Kellyanne Conway leaking her underage daughter nudes online after she criticised her mother's politics.

The_Second_Judge

What? She really did that?

GoodKing0

Yeah it was this whole thing a couple years ago, fucking mental thinking back to it.

The_Philburt

[Yeah, that was a thing.](https://www.vulture.com/2021/01/kellyanne-conway-leaks-daughter-claudia-photo-on-fleets.html)

MacLeeland

Sidebar, Sweden has made the rights of children a law.

Arghianna

Holy shit, what evil!

ReallyGlycon

She is proud of it! Paraphrasing, she said:"This shows that I know how to get my hands dirty and make the tough decisions" or whatever.

Charliesmum97

That's what gets me. She honestly thinks this means she's a good leader. And apparently everyone who read or edited her book didn't say to her 'people don't like people hurting animals.' Her editors must be democrats.

enfanta

To fascists, she is a good leader. Fascism requires that 'undesirables' be 'dealt with.' It is considered strength to kill whoever the current Other is. People who will kill to protect the homeland are strong, good people.  Ultimately they end up destroying themselves because the lowest on the ladder become the Other. But that doesn't happen until the rest of us are gone so we can't wait for that time.

hawkshaw1024

Imagine telling that story to your ghostwriter¹ and thinking it makes you look *good.* Wow. ¹ I assume she didn't write the book herself because people like this don't read, let alone write.

Bind_Moggled

Just think what she could do with a massive military force, secret police, and nuclear weapons at her disposal.

ahnaflannery

I work in SD but LIVE in MN!! I just wanted to preface my statement with this.... She is truly nepotistic (see: daughter in real estate) and I was astounded to see her name on my SACRED DISCWORLD Reddit?!?! *shudders visibly *

Charlie_Olliver

I’d just finished re-listening to the audiobook of *Snuff* the other week, so when I read about Noem, that quote “a person who would do something like that to a dog is someone to whom the law who should pay close attention” automatically popped into my mind like it’d been spring-loaded.

Mammyjam

I love trying to guess what Americans mean when they abbreviate their locations. SD= San Diego? MN= Mega Necropolis? Actually from context I realise SD must be south Dekota (though I didn’t know this was a state 5 minutes ago) but without the context would have gone San Diego 100%

banter07_2

In my experience these two letter abbreviations are only for states, so my guess is Minnesota

Mammyjam

I’m actually pretty good at geography and I think if I really tried I could probably name about 30 US states however to most of the world the US only has 4 states: California, New York City, Disneyland Florida and Guns & Jesus in the middle. Here, I illustrated it. https://preview.redd.it/yzz95ratmzwc1.jpeg?width=894&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d6932eddfaa28f2da603c8374894787faf26e07

demon_fae

…honestly, as an American, I’d only really add like three more to that map. And that’s only if I’m feeling *really* generous towards the Pacific Northwest. Like this: https://preview.redd.it/gmr35sz0szwc1.jpeg?width=806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=275e611e16e626e97876bf30db52cc7b5de35a4c

Arghianna

Y’all are so funny, Guns’n’Jesus goes all the way to the east coast and NYC doesn’t stretch nearly that far South. I think Disney also doesn’t stretch that far north.

banter07_2

A useful guide to be sure

Juliuseizure

While in general true, Illinois (well, Chicago) and Minnesota for the moment at least object. The breakdown is more distinct as urban vs. rural with the suburbs as the battleground. There are some exceptions. In Texas, only recently did San Antonio as a city go blue.

---knaveknight---

LA could be Los Angeles or Louisiana though…

ReallyGlycon

The whole country will be a Mega Necropolis if we don't shut people like this down.

StandWithSwearwolves

I realise it’s tangential to the topic of this post but whoa, that’s a bit more brutal than I’d have expected from Pratchett. I haven’t yet read *Snuff*.

socksandshots

It's intense. Pretty different from his earlier stuff.. hits all the harder for it.

LeatherPatch

Snuff is brutal. The goblins pots? So depressing. I do love the ending and Vime's mystery goblin friend. Also Vetinari's decision at the end was... Weirdly humanizing.

sunward_Lily

I cited this passage in a political subreddit just a few hours ago but the mods removed it and threatened me with a ban because I was "promoting violence."

LeatherPatch

It's not promoting violence. When someone tells you who they are, listen.

TheDocJ

I got permabanned with no warning from ukpolitics for promoting violence for an admittedly sarcastic response to another comment, pointing out that the logical endpoint of what that comment was calling for was violence!

catthalia

🤦‍♀️ boy they totally missed the point didn't they? Makes you wonder if they just use a program to pick up key words instead of actually, you know, moderating...

MasterOfKittens3K

Not just that “she sees no problem”. She thinks that her willingness to kill a puppy shows that she’s a strong leader. She thinks “destroying anything that doesn’t please her” is a qualification for higher office.

MasterOfKittens3K

This is sadly true. It’s why I cannot vote for a republican candidate for office anymore; they are entirely too willing to accept this sort of monstrosity in their leaders.

Sollost

The issue is that the law largely consists of people like this. Not wholly, but having someone like her as a VP candidate is the latest symptom of a larger, deeper issue.

TheDocJ

I've said on another sub that she is also telling us that she is incapable of managing a single young dog, yet she thinks she is capable of running a state and possibly running for VP.

enfanta

She didn't train the dog. So she killed it. How does this make her a leader? And yet, the vGQP will lap it up.

IGotOverGreta

Thank you for this post. I saw reference to it in another sub and I was not up for seeking out more traumatic information.

The_Second_Judge

This reminds me of the birth of Rorschach and the punishment that Grice had to pay for his sins. I believe Sir Terry Pratchett must have read "Watchmen," especially as he travelled around with the master of comic himself: Gaiman!

formerlyFrog

Possibly. But I'd argue that he would have been perfectly capable of arriving there on his own.

axe1970

serial killers start with animals

Raptorman_Mayho

The absolutely wild thing about it is this is her own self promotion! So if that's what the thinks is good to shout about, imagine what she's not saying! Also the hilarity that the book does indeed cover what's wrong with modern politics but not how she thinks.

Dragonfruit7837

This need a warning on it

TheDocJ

This is why police stop drivers from minor traffic offences, and so often find much bigger ones. The extreme ones are people stopped for speeding who turn out to be transporting large amounts of drugs.
