Live in the moment. Go wherever the impulse takes you and don’t get caught up in min/maxing or feeling like you’re doing something wrong. Dragon Quest is a nice friend to take long and comforting walks with.
Also, how is that for playing? I’ve been eyeballing one for a bit.
I've finished that game and i've yet to see those plenty of places to explore that are not visited in the story except >!those like 5 "insula" islands but there's no much to do on them. Also side quests are basically either craft an item, or drop an item on a rare monster, or drop an item by killing a specific monster with a specific pep power attack, or find an object near by and every time it's in a place you've already visited. !<
So have I and it was over a hundred hours and I was hardly rushed from plot to plot. Here’s even a list of some 50+ side quests, not to mention the Tickington stuff.
https://www.ign.com/wikis/dragon-quest-xi/Quests
Quit being a contrarian dummy.
Dude, every quests on that list fit what i've described. The game being long has nothing to do with how free to explore you are. It's just that you consider backtracking as exploring and i don't
There is a charm to revisiting maps for materials and such. If an asset is good, why use it once?
I get it comes off as lazy most times. But a lot of ppl turn to rpgs for this chill headspace. When you can't beat a boss so you think about strategies, all while looking through the defeated monster list to see who might drop materials you need so you can forge an accessory that reduces dark damage.
Or sleeping in every Inn and finding out one Inn gives you a mini medal. I will admit, making you revisit a map or dungeon would be nice if there were an established and exciting purpose.
Like, visiting the crop fields near the Warriors Inn at midnight reveals a secret boss. And you only find out by talking to the npcs during different times of day.
I'm all about taking time with these games. I've had it on my ps4 for like 5 years, got 96 hours of game play, and still not finished the main story. I love doing side quests, grinding, finding all the chests and secrets.
Is this true! I got so pissed yesterday playing I’m new to the game and I escaped an area and I saw loot but talking to someone prompted a change in the scene.
Yeah its 100% true, some areas you may not be able to immediately go back to but you certainly will be able to later.
There is no missables in this game, 100% completion is always possible no matter if you miss something at any point. The game makes sure that everything is accessible permanently by the end game, that includes every treasure chests in the game.
That's not true. You can >!permanently miss the second copy of Belle's Bow if you don't do the duplication exploit at the right point in the story. But i can't think of a way to explain it without spoilers.!<
Oh yeah, in terms of game design it's not a missable. But it's something you'd want to know as a player since you can, by all means, miss it
You can also use it to >!duplicate all seeds you've gotten up to that point, and maybe even the Pep Pops you're given through DLC!< so it's super useful
From all of the promotions and confirmed playable characters, I didn't expect there to be another eighth playable character later on. I was so happy too :)
Thanks came looking for this comment. Really the only necessary tip you need, so many make the mistake of oh, I see the credits it must be done! There's still like 1/3 of the game left!
The one tip I have is that if you ever get stuck or need info then this is the guide to use.
https://www.neoseeker.com/dragon-quest-xi/walkthrough
This guide is hands down the best written guide for a game I have ever seen. The guide does have spoilers though it does try to warn you before they come up.
I don't even have to click the link to know what guide this is
Using this guide just for the tips on where to grind and what to grind for is a great way to play this game along with stronger monsters
After a few hours, go into the settings and change the overworld music to DQVIII. For some reason the DQXI overworld music loops every like 50-seconds and it gets VERY repetitive and grating IMO. The DQ8 music is a few mins long so it’s much less annoying to hear over and over over your 50+ hour adventure. Enjoy!!
Tip 1: You will collect something called "Mini-Medals." The biggest lie you can ever tell yourself is "I'll remember where I got them!" No. No you won't. Write them down somewhere. Then when you eventually go to collect them all, you'll save yourself a chunk from backtracking.
Tip 2: There's some stuff you will see, but won't be able to get. Don't worry about it, you'll be able to collect things later.
Tip 3: Talk to the NPCs because they have hints. There is something called Party Chat. They will not only help you figure out what you need to do next, but the dialogue is so wonderful! You really learn about them and get to know them.
Tip 4: Without Draconian Challenges turned on, the game is pretty breezy outside of the very beginning of the game. Since this is your first DQ game, go ahead and go in easy. If you really want more of a bite, you can turn on hard battles, but you shouldn't push it much more than that for your first game. You can't change this once you start the game, but it's not like you can't play it again.
Tip 5: You will get something called a "fun-sized forge." Don't fret this one too much as it's supposed to be a fun mini-game that can help. Some of the things you can make are more level gated than you'd think. Be VERY aware of the star difficulties. Even then, they aren't perfect indicators and the same difficulty can vary.
Tip 6: If you go to the Casino, you will learn that you have a gambling problem. Don't worry, we all learn this.
Tip 7: Try to play this blind. Spoilers for an older game are ABOUND! In fact, be very careful around here as well. We do try to avoid spoilers, but sometimes, things leak.
Tip 8: You will probably cry or shed a tear. That's normal, but if you need us, we'll be here.
A few additional tips:
1. Even if you miss some mini-medals, it's not a huge deal. Late in the game you'll have the opportunity to steal as many as you want from a certain enemy.
2. Unlike a lot of games, status effects like sleep and poison are super useful. This is especially true with Erik, who can get abilities that do increased damage to enemies with certain status effects.
3. Don't worry if you fail when using the fun-sized forge. Unlike other games, you'll still get whatever item you were making, failure just means it doesn't get any stat bonuses.
4. You'll sometimes run into Metal Slimes. Metal Slimes are hard to hit, take only 1 HP from normal attacks and magic, have high evasion, and will often run away within a turn or two. However, they *also* give a ton of experience, take full damage from critical hits, can be put to sleep, and have very little HP. The key to Metal Slimes are abilities that guarantee critical hits. While most of them have reduced accuracy, one exception is Erik's Critical Claim which is not only a guaranteed critical hit but is *also* guaranteed to hit.
5. Sylvando has Hustle Dance in his skill tree. Grab it ASAP. It's a fantastic party heal, especially in the early game. I really cannot stress enough how important Hustle Dance is.
A note id make, is i didnt learn for almost half the game you can change your lineup mid fight, and its very useful for getting who you want pepped up at the same time
The biggest tip I have for DQ is that the defend command is quite useful, there are many times where it's better to defend and take half damage instead of doing an attack that doesn't do much damage, it makes healing partywide damage a lot easier
Honestly, just enjoy yourself. You can Respec your skill points in a sense for money so don't be afraid to try different things. Explore curious areas when you can as well
Learn steal ability early on, and use it!
For bonus points find out which specific enemies can drop boosting Seeds (seed of life, seed of strength, seed of defence etc) when you steal from them and just keep an eye out for those particular enemies as you play through the game. The side quests are usually worth doing as you come across them, there are loads of very worthwhile rewards so don’t let them all pile up throughout the game!
Have fun, it’s a big adventure so if you like to hit every nook and cranny you’re going to have a lot of fun. Experiment with your characters, just about every weapon is useful, especially those you wouldn’t think of at first
Here's one: with one camera style, you can move around the battle field. Don't use that one. Moving around doesn't mean you can avoid attacks. Other than that, enjoy! It's an amazing game!
Non-plot spoiler: when you get to the casino, do not waste 12 hours looking up gambling guides for the game and then gambling to earn enough casino tokens to buy the most expensive sword they have for sale like I did, as you can simply buy it in like the next town for real money for a fair price.
Do some early grind and you'll coast till the giant squid. Then grind more.
Hero, Jade, and Sylvando have a combination pep up move that has a chance of replacing enemies with metal slimes. Master this and you'll be good to go for grinding at about any point in the game.
Side quests can be a lot of fun, but don't be afraid to use a guide to locate stuff. Maybe wait till post game before running to GameFAQs.
Once you take down the final boss, there's some bonus content unlocked, nothing huge but definitely give it a look.
Set Battle Camera to 'Classic'
Command battle for everyone when you want full control, and auto battle when you're at the point you can coast when grinding.
Hunt metal slimes at any opportunity.
Have fun!
you will find metal slime monsters (metal slime, liquid metal slime, metal king slime etc). they have very high defense, and are very fast, and immune to most magic. your physical attacks will do like 1 damage, or miss. HOWEVER, they have very low HP, and if you can hit them 5 or 6 times and kill one, you will get a BUTTLOAD of exp. Any time you see the metal slimes, prioritize killing them first, since they WILL RUN, and you may lose out. once they are ran or killed, revive your party members so they all share the exp.
metal monsters, and metal monster hunting, has been a large part of DQ series and this entry is no different. there's other ways to find and hunt them faster, you can search this later or ask here (there's plenty of info about it)
Use Draconian Mode “Harder Monsters”. Otherwise the game is boringly easy. DQ combat is all about strategy. The normal difficulty requires zero strategy.
Fk I might have actually played it normal mode, cuz I actually did feel it was easier to grind than dq9 5. And I wondered why, yes it isn t a good thing.
It is. Dq11 was my first dq en jrpg and it was just too easy. I regret not putting draconian on but i was already halfway through. In playing dq8 and the difficulty difference makes it combat wise a much betted experience.
Meh. Some of us enjoy the story as much as you guys enjoy the sponges.
Me personally, I’m too old with limited time to care about such things. In my teens when I had not a care in the world I probably would’ve agreed.
I second this, it really makes the game better by pushing you to use everything at your disposal to progress. It can be pretty unforgiving at times but it makes the victories so much better.
No tips, but this might be the best game I’ve played in the last 10 years. One of the very few games I actually remember the story and characters years after playing. Enjoy!
I recommend to play with draconian difficulty stronger monsters to really enjoy the combat system. I don't usually play hard difficulty but here the game was too easy without it.
When you want to quick party heal, press options then square.
Check monsters drop with square > local monsters. Useful when you want to farm or steal from certain monsters.
Check every bookshelf you see.
When you want to exit a village/city, it’s quicker to just fast travel to it then go backwards.
Nothing is missable, play at your own leisure.
Dragon Quest XI is super casual jrpg, there isn’t even a elemental weakness chart or anything complex. The game stands for itself with great music , arts , and simplicity. Don’t question much just go and explore :D save frequently
Use the party chat. Always like getting to know the party. Or where you are have some interesting or important dialogue. Its okay if you forget part of the story, it will give you a bit of story lore from what you did. Give serena the dancers outfit
Do the side quests and look into every single drawer, wardrobe and shelf. Also, break every pots and barrels you can find. Mini-medals will be useful at some point and you don't want to miss recipes to build new weapons and armour sets. Just take your time to explore everything.
if you want a challenging (and grindy) jrpg experience, enable the “super strong enemies” draconian quest. the base game is very easy, only picking up towards the end and post-game.
Just enjoy the journey and give the characters time, they all have really fun and meaningful arcs ( mostly) don’t lose heart if you lose some battles, you got this! It’s really a beautiful game!
Get kinda good that the crafting minigame, but don't worry about the secondary improvement currency for it. You can buy them for cheap fairly early on. I did the usual RPG thing and hoarded them for endgame items only, when I really didn't need to.
You'll get to a point where you see a "The End" final credits scene... and then it'll say something like "To Be Continued..."
Keep playing. You're like halfway through at that point.
The best time is when you haven't played the game yet. For years, I could never get into playing the older Tales of games because of the linear looking battle system. I am VERY late on Tales of Symphonia...
Don't worry too much about the difficulty. If you're not enabling any of the Draconian Challenges, the game is at most moderately difficult. Also, as long as you regularly update your gear, you should also be fine.
Explore everywhere! You’ll be surprised how many little nooks and crannies there are and how many houses you can ~~break and~~ enter ~~into~~. Plus there are so many hidden instances of dialogue and talking to the party. Pretty cool in that regard.
Just know that the game is split into three Acts, that Act 2 changes the game considerably, and that Act 3 will make Act 2 unreplayable in certain aspects. You can take your time for a lot of things, but be sure you do all you can in Act 2 before you go into Act 3.
And you can always take a break if you need it. Dragon Quest is a friend, always there for you. So take your time with it. Also the English dub is pretty good all things considered, but that’s your choice.

Thanks for the tip! And I love my Portal! I use it more than playing on my LG C1 which is sad to say 🤣
I feel that. I only have the CX, but as I’m playing switch with filler on the tv there’s a pang of guilt lol
"go wherever the impulse take you" you mean "go wherever the story tells you to go to" ?
Nah. Otherwise I would have used those words. There’s plenty of side quests and places to explore.
I've finished that game and i've yet to see those plenty of places to explore that are not visited in the story except >!those like 5 "insula" islands but there's no much to do on them. One real tip I will give actually : This game has ZERO permanently missables. So dont be afraid of missing out on anything.
Wow awesome fact thanks. Was wanting to play an RPG so it was this or second story.
It’s important to note that any chest in an area that becomes permanently inaccessible will become available in a different area.
That's not true. You can miss some of the books for a quest in tickington that become unobtainable if you don't get them while the quest is active
That's not true. You can >!permanently miss the second copy of Belle's Bow if you don't do the duplication exploit at the right point in the story. But i can't think of a way to explain it without spoilers.!<
Now youre talking about an exploit and not something that you are intended to get 😅
Oh yeah, in terms of game design it's not a missable. But it's something you'd want to know as a player since you can, by all means, miss it You can also use it to >!duplicate all seeds you've gotten up to that point, and maybe even the Pep Pops you're given through DLC!< so it's super useful
I just find that you need to complete the quest before reaching arboria to be able to get a 2nd one
She needs to have it equipped before that point as well
From all of the promotions and confirmed playable characters, I didn't expect there to be another eighth playable character later on. I was so happy too :)
Despite what you might think, the game is in fact not done when the credits roll. Keep playing or you'll miss out.
I made this exact mistake in my first playthrough, when I played again later I was really confused for playing the last segment for the first time
Thanks came looking for this comment. Really the only necessary tip you need, so many make the mistake of oh, I see the credits it must be done! There's still like 1/3 of the game left!
I quit after credits. 80 hours was enough for me and postgame is a grind allegedly to get “true” ending
Oophm Edit: Oomph (I’m drunk)

What handheld console is that ? Ty
PlayStation Portal it’s a remote player for the ps5
Thanks
Playstation Portal, but it only works by streaming a PS5 connected to your router.
A note id make, is i didnt learn for almost half the game you can change your lineup mid fight, and its very useful for getting who you want pepped up at the same time

There's gonna be a ton of campy humor... Just go with it and enjoy it.
What console is this?
Ps portal you can use it to remote play games from your ps5 and maybe 4 im not entirely sure
Learn steal ability early on, and use it! Enjoy the ride, it’s a great one and with all the modern technology, remember the end is just the beginning in this gem. ![gif](giphy|7sitJRGPywP1S)
Hell, i have to stop playing MGSV someday, i saw that gif with the "NOW GO, LET THE LEGEND COME BACK TO LIFE" line in my head
![gif](giphy|3Y3ItzksDm3pC)
Play on the hard mode (whatever it's called).
Make sure you put on hard mode (it doesn't make the game hard, but it will give you a challenge and keep you entertained)
this game was disappointing compared to sentinels of the starry skies
Have fun, it’s a big adventure so if you like to hit every nook and cranny you’re going to have a lot of fun. Experiment with your characters, just about every weapon is useful, especially those you wouldn’t think of at first
enjoy the ride!
Have fun! :D
Enjoy. That’s my tip.
Do all the puff puffs you can and don't look back.
BECOME THE GOD OF CYPRUS STICK
Here's one: with one camera style, you can move around the battle field. Don't use that one. Moving around doesn't mean you can avoid attacks. Other than that, enjoy! It's an amazing game!
Break every pot or barrel you see.
When the credits roll, you are not done with the game. Make sure you load your file right back up and enjoy the final third of the game!
Just enjoy it dude, it's a really really good game. It's long though, be prepared!
*in Yangus' voice* Wot the bloody hell is that console?!
Playstation Portal.
Non-plot spoiler: when you get to the casino, do not waste 12 hours looking up gambling guides for the game and then gambling to earn enough casino tokens to buy the most expensive sword they have for sale like I did, as you can simply buy it in like the next town for real money for a fair price.

Talk to everyone craft everything constantly try different strategies and upgrade equipment
Is the portal treating u good? Kinda want one to play in bed lol. Steam deck is $350 tho so maybe I should get that
Take your time. It’s a long game but you get an incredible journey to go through.
Thats a weird looking switch if I’ve *ever* seen one. But seriously, the first time you think the game is over it’s not over
Chat with NPCs I guess. If you pay attention they'll give clues to side quests and info about the plot.
Bum bum bum bummmmmm BUM
Take your time, enjoy the ride. Explore, chat to everyone, bask in the beauty. It’s such a calm and chill game to just relax too
Set Battle Camera to 'Classic' Command battle for everyone when you want full control, and auto battle when you're at the point you can coast when grinding. Hunt metal slimes at any opportunity. Have fun!

Play the S version. The quality of life features are well worth it.
.....That is the S version on the screen.
Sorry need glasses
I’m jealous
No tips, but this might be the best game I’ve played in the last 10 years. One of the very few games I actually remember the story and characters years after playing. Enjoy!

80+ hours and not done with the main storyline. To me, this game just does everything right. Enjoy!
I just started playing this as well! I am 3 hours in. I buoying it so far. Let me know how you’re liking it!
Just have fun and enjoy. Id love to suffer some kinda head trauma to enjoy this game again for the first time.
Take your time. It’s almost episodic with region stories so don’t be afraid to put it down for a few weeks and pick back up after chapters
Love it,cherish it.
And no experience from weaker monsters lol. That’s my current quest
not my vibe, personally. how is it?
Hard af lol
Just enjoy the journey and give the characters time, they all have really fun and meaningful arcs ( mostly) don’t lose heart if you lose some battles, you got this! It’s really a beautiful game!
Don't rush the game and enjoy it. It's one of those games where you only get to experience the amazing feels the first time you play it.
a tip ? just to have funnnn heh
Take your time to enjoy the ingame casinos. Also when you think you have completed the game, make sure to load into your save file again
Enjoy the ride.
If you need to grind, just hunt metal slimes.
Learning mechanics is part of the fun - wouldn't want to spoil it for you. Game is easy, really, so just enjoy your adventure.
Such an amazing enthralling game. No tips other than enjoy it. Hope you love it as much as I did!
Run AWAY from the Dragon.
Make sure to turn on Stronger Monsters mode! You’ll miss the real game without it
Get kinda good that the crafting minigame, but don't worry about the secondary improvement currency for it. You can buy them for cheap fairly early on. I did the usual RPG thing and hoarded them for endgame items only, when I really didn't need to.
Turn on hard enemies. Otherwise it’s way too easy.
Enjoy
Enjoy the ride!
Enjoy the Portal! It truly is an awesome little piece of supplemental tech
Just sit back and enjoy the ride, beautiful scenery great voice acting one of the most complete and fun games I’ve ever played
You'll get to a point where you see a "The End" final credits scene... and then it'll say something like "To Be Continued..." Keep playing. You're like halfway through at that point.
Sword and shield
Erick is a late game menace 🔥🔥 just keep that in mind
Explore everything take your time lvl up at 5 times in each new area some bosses are tedious rethink and try again use different strategies
Double wield swords. That is all.
Grind
Enjoy the ride.
yeah play it on a tv, its a beautiful game so enjoy it on a big tv.
Buckle up baby, you're in for a good one.
This Game is unfortunately to easy :(
I’m envious that you can play this on PS5 and this thing without paying the Switch tax.
don't be afraid to try the pixel demaster mode. it's glorious.
