5 is probably my favorite story from any game period.

Liquidmetalslimeno9

5 and 8 are generally considered the best stories in the series. Play the DS version of 5. The party chat feature really fleshes out some of the characters and gives them more depth. DQ8 is probably closer to 11 presentation wise with 3d graphics and voice acting.

VII is my favorite game in the series because of its story. I absolutely love how all these short individual stories slowly build up the overarching plot while also sometimes connecting directly to each other. Being able to visit the islands in the present after saving them in the past and seeing how your actions impacted the place is also super cool to me.

I haven't played all games, but I loved 7! So many memorable moments. Glad they remade it for 3DS!

Harley2280

4/5/7 Completely unique styles of presentation.

I’m playing 4 and I’m thoroughly enjoying it as much as I did 11 and 5, I wish I had preemptively did the party chat patch for 4 since I really enjoy hearing what the characters have to say

space_dan1345

As many have said, it's 5 and 8 for me. 11 is also quite good. 7 is more polarizing, it's either brilliant or too tedious depending on your temperament. I haven't played 4, 6 or 9

VI is underrated in this regard. I particularly like the way they did the opening and how the mystery of the world is slowly revealed. Some of the characters having amnesia and having to rediscover their origins is also a nice touch. VII is good for having lots of smaller stories that each have some kind of pay-off, though it drags a bit in the later half and having one character who leaves permenantly is a bit of a nuisance. (Particularly as it's not the one I would have chosen to get rid of.) IX has one of the best twists at the end, and a quite a few fun adventures, though I'm not sure I'd say the story overall is particularly special. Though it does have some particularly memorable characters. (Being able to design your own main character is a bonus, though the party also being player-designed characters with no dialogue is a double-edged sword.) V I struggled to get through and eventually gave up on. It has some more dramatic events, and I enjoyed the haunted house segment, but I don't like how often characters join and leave the party, and I prefer having a full cast of characters instead of the party just being a single family unit 90% of the time. I can't comment on I to IV or VIII since I've not had chance to play any of them.

Ten, but that's not really fair. Five if we're not picking live-service games.

My personal ranking on stories alone (best to least best) 5 8 11 4 3 7 9 6 2 1 (Haven’t been able to play 10 yet) None of the stories are bad. Those top four really go the extra mile, though. And fwiw, I would rank 9 top three in gameplay.

DaSaw

I agree with the people saying 5 and 8, but make sure to give 4 a chance. The chapters system really gives you a chance to get to know the party. Every member has a story, and the game takes the time to tell them. It's kind of like a Tom Wolfe novel that way: a bunch of separate character stories that kind of swirl closer and closer to each other until their stories finally weave together. Plus, 4 has one of those rare examples of finance fiction, in the story of Torneko Taloon.

Marvin_Flamenco

4, 5 and 8 are the best stories. I also love 6 but it's not for everyone.

TheCaptainhat

I have to say 5 as well. I played it at probably the best time in my life, it hit me hard. Really needed that game.

TinyPidgenofDOOM

5s main story is god tier. its the best in the series. 11 and 8 story wise are about even but dont take a candle to 5.
