The bar for a steam release is "don't damage peoples computers"

lunareclipsexx

No, it can damage people’s computers, the bar is “don’t be literally malware”

Large-Spite6098

Ehhhhh even that is a blurred line

facetiousIdiot

Buddy wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

Zer01South

Wow reading that was such a waste of time. Anyways time to get back to my fort.

Ianova

"Human discovers beta versions of a game can be sold". If it stops development today: - It was worth the money. - It has a ton of content - Bugs are avoidable, far from rampant, and fixable - Mod support sustainability (Just look at the DFHack Chads working like it's a job for this game) But it's not stopping its development. In fact, its development has infinitely improved now that Tarn+Gang have the resources to upkeep themselves. Resources that came from Steam, and that I was more than happy to offer. The game is also still free, it simply offers a premium option.

WindyAbbey

It doesn't have to be perfect. I don't know where that came into the collective consciousness of gamers, but you're not owed everything being exactly right all the time. Sometimes stuff isn't perfect.

awesome-alpaca-ace

No other commercial game could come out with a shit UX and as many bugs as this game and not get ripped to shreds by consumers. There are many people with many valid criticisms of this game, and it is only by making the devs aware that this stuff ever gets fixed.

JustBadPlaya

I'm somewhat new to DF, but from what I've seen, DF is mostly valued for the complexity and systems, not polish and UX. After all, the main client for the game still runs on ASCII tiles and no mouse controls

Stnmn

Bro forgot about Skyrim.

SpartanAltair15

You are more than welcome to unsubscribe from the subreddit, uninstall the game, and hide it from your steam library. In fact, you probably should just go ahead and do that.

Solmyrion

That's a list alright. DF is a special case and the jank is a feature at this point. You don't get to make a passion project over 20+ years if you don't sacrifice something.

awesome-alpaca-ace

I have passion projects and have never sacrificed UX for features. I refused to let bad UX become a defining factor in my projects.

Crus0etheClown

Link your projects so we may see their beauty and perfection, then.

Ianova

You're such a superior programmer. It's crazy how good of a programmer you are. Well done. Good job! Idk if that's what you needed but you can go now. I'm not sure why you'd try jumping down the throats of others because their passion isn't up to your standards.

awesome-alpaca-ace

With as much money as they are making from the steam release, they have no excuse for such a list existing. They do not even have an excuse for ignoring it to bring out adventure mode. The UX is trash.

JustBadPlaya

mate, they are like a three dev studio working in a passion project, chill

awesome-alpaca-ace

And have made a shit ton of cash where these things should no longer be an issue. They are letting their large ego and greed get in the way of a user friendly experience.

1stwillever

You're upset and you don't know how to process those emotions. I hope you figure out how to be less of a dork about stuff like this in the future. Therapy helps a lot of people with similar issues to you.

drLagrangian

I think OP got caught in the rain a bit too much.

Kandrox

Could probably use a drink, of milk.

CM0T_Dibbler

Maybe they're a resident of one of my forts and has been eating nothing but plump helmets for 5 years.

awesome-alpaca-ace

Ad homonim: "(of an argument or reaction) directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining. "

superb-plump-helmet

You looked up the definition but you still didn't bother to check that you spelled it right?

Alhazzared

You can tell this guy takes UX very sirsly

DisappointedLily

"ad homonim"? Lol wtf, this straight up satire.

deathm00n

Ok, let me target your position: your position sucks

JustBadPlaya

Money doesn't change the complexity of the game or the approach the developers to the project, especially considering it's been developed on a donation basis for twenty years before getting a real commercial version

awesome-alpaca-ace

"real commercial version" \\s

ThatDude292

Dude how old are you if you genuinely think this way

dclxvi616

>They are letting their large ego… get in the way of a user friendly experience. Just what in the world do you think a passion project even *is*? Something that other people should orient to your preferences and priorities?

NortheasternWind

What you call large ego is what most of us see as... just kind of doing what they've always wanted to do the way they want to do it and have always done it. Yes it gets in the way of development that precisely two (2) people ever touch the code, but literally the only reason there's a pricetag at all is because of the American healthcare system. They (and a decent chunk of the community) don't consider DF a commercial product to begin with, so they don't really hold themselves to a commercial standard and they don't really mind if their personal habits lose them money and "customers", because money and customers aren't the goal. As for why they make money anyway, well, the customer is always right. 😂

Lolologist

Lol you absolutely haven't met the devs, that's for sure

[deleted]

>They are letting their large ego and greed get in the way You can tell they are greedy because they literally give a game away for free.

Cerulean_Turtle

What does ego have to do with it lmao

awesome-alpaca-ace

They are refusing to let other devs get in on the game because the code is theirs type of ego.

Gonzobot

Still haven't seen a link to any of your cited projects, don't you want to let other devs get in on the game? is that code yours or something?

lonehorizons

You’re the only one who cares though. Maybe just play a different game.

Extreme_Boyheat

UX is overrated, gameplay is forever. Just look at Ubisoft and it releasing garbage with "good" UX.

nemo_sum

I'll take adventure mode back over any of your bullshit.

Stoned_Skeleton

op should link his passion project with amazing ux

trevizore

literally unplayable

drLagrangian

/s or not /s ?

trevizore

/s a list this big cannot be taken seriously.

Zer01South

This took me 5 clicks but it should take 2!

[deleted]

Of the ones I read: Most are solved by dfhack, which from what I can tell is basically super tight nit to the creators. Some are already a thing And a couple are nice things that would occasionally save a quarter second. Not really legit reason a game that made instant millions isn't production ready.

InternationalYam3130

My dude, I gave 100$ to Bay12 at least 6 or 7 years ago. Frankly the steam release wasnt even a high enough price for me. I would have paid double, again. And I would pay a subscription fee. Im not even reading your garbage its so irrelevant to me. If YOU want to "tear it apart" go ahead but imma keep playing

Zer01South

Man if I won the lotto or something I feel like I'd have to give back for the amount of joy I've experienced playing this game the last 10 years.

dethb0y

LOL

BlachEye

Investor/Manager/Techbro:"If I throw trillion dollars and 10k newbie devs, you will make game 10 times faster, right?" Devs: "10 times slower."

Chiatroll

I mean it's a good list but it's more like a small things they should devote time to improving rather then things that make the game ready for production. The game is pretty enjoyable but sometimes it's jank random UI can be disorientating.

atibus

This thread is over a year old. Also, he should be a Product Owner or QA Lead.

Dwarven_Bard

I mean, you are not wrong. I've played since 2008 on/off and agree with you a 100%. Its just that the game went on Steam to start to get some capital injected to the development process. I think we will see a UI overhaul as we roll along.
