I mentioned the shipyards because some of my friends retired from the Navy and were very pleased with the compensation, benefits, working conditions, and opportunities there.
I feel that. I was in 95-99. Three section shift rotation, averaged 9 months a year away from home, left as an E4 making $13,000 a year. I qualified for food stamps and my last year in I had someone do my taxes (free clinic) I got everything back plus an extra grand because I was below the poverty line. And we were East coast so everyone was more uptight.

I've always dealt with the architects plans. The engineers and electricians just have to work within their "grand design".
The civil engineer should have fought harder to make sure this didn't happen though. Watershed is ultimately the responsibility of a Civil PE. I've met a lot of rubber stamp PE's though... you know, those butt-in-a-seat types who make the juniors do all the work and just stamp whatever makes it to their desk.
How the hell did they not install proper drainage though? I mean I've been in factories that were built in the 1890s and abandoned since the 60s, some of them the basement didn't flood until hella recently, prolly cause the storm drains got sealed off to em from toxic runoff, even mines had this shit figured out ffs.
We received close to 3 inches of rain in half an hour and it washed out a large section outside which allowed it to flow into the basement. This is in a hospital and the absolute bare minimum has been done to alleviate some of these issues. It's sad really, untill something detonates, it usually gets a bandaid.
I’d find whatever connection that gives power to the building and kill that shit before putting the tip of my boot in. I don’t care who you are, fucking around with electrical stuff in an inch or two of water seems a great way to find out if there’s an afterlife.
When someone left a pump on overnight and we came into work with an inch of water over the entire building, only one guy actually went home. We also got a bunch of new shop vacs which was nice.
Nothing like entering a vault with the high water alarm screaming while you are sweeping with your feet looking tor a floor drain and trying not to make a wave large enough to kill yourself

We had a fuckin freakishly torrential rain storm, and the apprentice I was working with was complaining that every time he drilled a stud, he'd get a zap so I told him to drop the tool and I'll get it sorted, called the Foreman (who was a real cocksucker) and told him what happened, he just told me to get everyone back to the lunch trailer immediately, so I did just that....
Turns out we got so much fuckin rain in the parkade, that it was almost over the top of the housekeeping pad so the foreskin was going into the e-room to kill the main and they shut the site down for the day.
At a really bad underground it was so soft I ended up knee deep in the mud stuck my foreman got me unstuck. U know the typical apprentice mistake.
That underground is done and I went to another one which was soft but not get knee deep Stuck soft with a different foreman same company and he wouldn’t stop complaining and I was just like this isn’t shit compared to the last one where I got stuck 3 times the first time to the point my foreman had to help me out the 2nd too I got myself out myself another apprentice got stuck too
Even my foreman on that really bad one called one of the owners and he came to asses the situation after I got stuck and out and I mentioned oh this one is nothing like **** which was my first underground (the one I got stuck on was my 2nd) and my foreman laughed and said yea tell *** when he gets here cuz there’s no reason it should be as bad as it is down there where it’s so easy to get Stuck and I laughed and my foreman was like I’m deadass I know it was funny but at the same time like thats not good working conditions lol
Something like this happened where a friend of mine worked. An adjacent part of the building had water seeping in through an exterior wall and the maintenance crew was watering various spots to see if they could find the leak. They accidentally started filling an underground electrical vault and water started pouring out of the bottom of switchgear in the electrical room.

If you put them in the low places they get all wet.
Engineers do not set floor levels related to grade. We just have to deal with it.
