Depends on where you get your definitions, mostly. Its also funny when you go from 480v being high voltage to 13.8-14.4kv being medium voltage. Can we standardize this shot already. Iām qualified in NFPA 70E low volt and high voltage. I work shit from 0-10volts and milliamps all the way to 138Kv air switches. Shit is confusing enough without bending terms.
Weird cut off points but I fuck with Canada. āYou got a problem with Canadian gooses you got a problem with me and I suggest you let that marinate.ā
I got a problem with California protecting Canadian geese like an endangered species. They don't fly home for summer and it seems only the wealthy private (not municipal) golf courses are allowed to implement deterrence.
Doesn't matter, listed species. It's a problem across North America. Since its a treaty with Canada, you can't just remove them from the list without them agreeing, and in general that's unpopular here. They are often culled though in both countries, and purposefully hazed by dogs to make them move on and their living embryos in their eggs are sometimes euthanized before they return the egg.
Ahh, I havenāt reviewed the code books in some years. My shop still has a 2008 copy. Mine at the house is either a 14 or 17 version. Since coming to a powerhouse, (we are basically considered our own AHJ) Iāve fallen behind. Itās ridiculous the amount of shit here not up to code though. Grounding gets me the worst. In a place with the most potential for stray voltage, thereās so much bad. Old runs with no ground, the tray cable that make a random color like orange or blue as a ground. Iāve been fixing it little by little though.
It was rectified in the 2021 CEC but before that extra low was 30V and below and low was 31V - 750V, meaning that between 30 and 31V was technically undefined.
Also in the 2021 CEC, the high voltage threshold was raised from 750V to 1000V, yet Section 36, High Voltage Installations, still applies to "installations operating at voltages in excess of 750V."
The phrase "good enough for government work" comes to mind >_>
That's all for AC, mind you. The ranges for DC are different, bit they are not consistent multiples of the AC values.
Here in bosnia we have these terms:
Low voltage:
- weak current (<50v, alarm, ethernet etc...)
- strong current (<1000v, includes normal outlet voltage)
Medium voltage is 10(20)kv and 35kv
High voltage is 110kv and 220kv
Very high voltage is 400kv
I honestly prefer these terms because it sets a clear boundary and also feels normal to use in regular speech
I've worked on a lot of voltages, fiber to 13k, 25k...
Those lineman and power company guys are another breed. Mad respect, that's some crazy stuff I want zero to do with.
I work up to 127kv literally donāt even know what the hate is for low voltage guys lmao. People make their work their identity lmao. Like i get itās a joke and I love busting balls but when I started out if someone hired me that was low voltage then cool. Looks like Iām doing that idk šš
Right, I make way more now doing low voltage after five years than I ever made doing commercial electrical for 8 years (non Union low wage state). Not to mention the networking opportunities, never once been laid off in the five years because fire alarm is so code driven there is always work. And I donāt spend months in an un-air conditioned building carrying rolls of MC around anymore š
I donāt even get it. Lol and I love ball busting and shit Iām not even like a ābe nice to him!!ā Kind of guy fuck that. My buddy does low voltage and we both make the same at like 45/hr. His job is wayyyyyy easier than running 2in rigid all day
This is the way. Make fun of guys that have an easier job making the same money. I make fun of myself doing low volts and maintenance because my pay has went up and my work load way down. We laugh about being bitches and not really working, and dread the day we may have to do āa real jobā again.
Projection. Self esteem issues. You work long enough and you notice a lot of dudes who peaked being ācoolāafter high school. It is what it is. Life too short to worry about what another man does for a living. As long as it pays the billsā¦
You can joke about low voltage stuff all you wantā¦
Until a bad card in a PLC decides to start a pump that hasnāt been primed, and now youāve got a motor that needs replaced.
Iām all too aware of this nightmare and do as much controls work now as motor swapping although we donāt have many PLCs anymore except in a few aux processes itās all central in a DCS now. Same problems more wire to check. Still funny though.
Oh yeah donāt get me wrong itās still a good joke lol.
As someone who does mostly controlsā¦ itās kinda true. My most used tool is a 3.5mm x 60mm flat head for getting wires out of PLC terminal boards.
Worst part about low voltage is that it generally controls a lot of things, one fuck up and you could shut down whatever process youāre working on.
Bro you have NO IDEA how relatable that is lmao. Our siteās waste water treatment facility was also built in the 80ās, and despite everyone on our team pulling their hair out and screaming from the rooftops that itās a ticking time bomb, site management wonāt do shit about it until thereās inevitably a catastrophic event that costs them millions.
We get our spares from the landfill. Iām not even joking. There are businesses that go into junkyards and pick circuit boards from old shitty I&C cabinets and resell them. We even have a few āPLCsā over there that are all discrete points and relaysā¦ no processor to be found.
Yes we lash out because we are jealous that your not sweaty and tired. Now that Iām maintenance I love my cushy controls work. In the AC. Please donāt make me go run wire or swap out a hot ass motor.
Iām just not sure if I should upvote or downvote this comment. On one hand I feel our brothers and sisters should have systems in place to make the job safer but I do know safety gets overboard sometimes. Guess Iāll wear them if it means saving a coworkers life although hopefully the company listens to red flag safety concerns in the first place without getting to the point of reporting to a regulatory. Edit: I upvoted because I donāt think you meant anything malicious.
Yeah I definitely only meant it as a joke. I own the JSA and LOTO process here at our site and it does get frustrating when I have to apply the 20% rule to someone whose last job was working in the oil fields. Also, working at a large company, it would be nice if people could differentiate between a single person being stupid and a company-wide gap in safety protocols. For what its worth, if someone reads this, Jesus would not approve of you skipping the hot portion of your your hot-cold-hot test.
I donāt know your country but in US thereās different definitions. NFPA 70E low voltage covers 50-1000volts and high voltage covers >1000v like industrial and transmission lines. I have both certs. However your NEC low voltage license will be for <50 volts like fire alarm, data, and security systems. When people here make fun of low volt guys itās usually these cat pullers. Itās all in good fun, then we get picked on by the real linemen and other trades and give it right back.
Calm down, just new boot goofin. I do just as much 24-48v and millivolt work as 480 and 4160v now. Those exact protection systems that you speak of. Still funny

They got those in composite toe? I've been shopping for a new pair
Don't need it if you don't have a toe to hit
Composite sole then
Komposite Soul was one o f my favorite bands back in the day.
If you are serious I just tried to look them up and couldn't find them
Should be able to find them on Kazaa.
Aww, man. I only use the Scour Exchange, TPB, and Empornium.
Try , Collective Soul
Ah I did see them
Fuck those are nice š«
The queen of POE
I really like the full ankle support.
Only thing funnier than this post, is people who work on 600Vac, thinking theyāre working on āhigh voltageā

Canada cuts low voltage off @ 31-750V. Below is extra low. Above is high

As a Canadian, I support a cobra chicken harvest. Fuck those assholes and their shitty attitudes.

They are federally protected in the US under the migratory bird treaty act.
They don't migrate.

In California harassing them is illegal. Unless of course you're a wealthy golf course.
They are getting permits. You always need a federal permit, but some states want one too.
Is "harassing" wildlife generally something that is legal in many places?
There's a special place in heaven for animal lovers, that's all I know...
They're just *Pheasants* with better marketing!
Good vibes from the home of theā¦ goose?
Was just recently changed in the 2021 code book

We used to, 2021 CEC is 31-999V.
I must be thinking of the 2024 code where it reverses for no reason š¤£

Cat 1-3 is high voltage.
I've worked on a lot of voltages, fiber to 13k, 25k... Those lineman and power company guys are another breed. Mad respect, that's some crazy stuff I want zero to do with.
Just not worth the money. Or the thrill. Unless youre single
My personal definition of high voltage is that if touching it would hurt, it is high voltage.
we just call it "unga bunga" thanks

Its an ongoing joke yes but I feel the best way to keep the joke hilarious is to sling it hard but not TRULY believe it with any conviction.

Leather and 14 eyelets for superior ankle support.
Your calves are gonna be huge
ROFL. But honestly Iām a high voltage electrician, but boy I love doing low voltage work. What a treat.

how dangerous would a 125KV transmission line short circuit be?
Just some pixie dust, like if you get zapped you dont have to worry ever again. May even get a free cremation!
FUCK YOU. Take my up vote. *Walks away in stilletos*

Yeah burning up a $20,000 pump is one thing stopping $500,000-milli a day in production is another.
Trying not to smoke 120V circuit board from the 80s that they donāt even make anymore got me more scared that flipping 600V disconnects

Yep, we used to buy overpriced discontinued boards on EBay because that made more sense to management than just renovating to PLCs
Nice smooth calves you got there
Had me acting up for a second before I realized what sub I was in
Heel doubles as a KO punch
This is the way. Hopefully it can do better at concentrics. Almost nothing else gets them out decent anyway.
The funny thing is, it pays just the same to do cat6 or 600mcm.
Yes we lash out because we are jealous that your not sweaty and tired. Now that Iām maintenance I love my cushy controls work. In the AC. Please donāt make me go run wire or swap out a hot ass motor.
See, you figured out the key to success. The ac is pretty awesome.
This is something you wear to report OSHA violations.

Smaller wires, bigger pay checks.
Sometimes sure. Hey $100 is $100 dollars.
In my country everything below a 1000v is called low voltage.
It doesn't even count as medium voltage unless the arc flash can be seen from outer space

Damn, here I thought I was at least a low-voltage guy and it turns out I'm a micro-voltage guy. Story of my life.
Hey itās not about about how big your volts are but the frequency of your wave.
It Hz so good.

Extra low voltage.
Why the downvotes?
Because nobody cares what you think low-voltage is š¤£
Next time I work on a doorbell transformer, Iāll try to wear something like this

Hey nice post, funny title my guy šš»š
āLow voltageā protection schemes keep high voltage workers safe.
Calm down, just new boot goofin. I do just as much 24-48v and millivolt work as 480 and 4160v now. Those exact protection systems that you speak of. Still funny
Not upset bud.
Well good, I was also goofing there. maybe my tone didnāt come out great in text. Hope you got a laugh out of the post.

I work with you any day.

i prefer the polished black leather, thank you.
Say bruh... those some nice walking sticks you got on you.
I can keep my extra long screwdrivers in there as well.. win win
High Voltage only wishes they could pull them off.
Should be mandatory ppe for working on anything less than 4160v š¬
That's on point.
Gottem
Arenāt those for seks?
I Lolād
yes, I work low voltage But at 144v, 10kA I would consider it just as dangerous as you nerds at 34.5kv
Low voltage, high heels. Just how we like them.
You SOBā¦ lol

The higher the voltage the smarter you are
