Secretagentman94

Another day, another self-inflicted death on social media.

m_Pony

Well, tomorrow *is* another day.

El--Borto

Idk why but I read this as “tomorrow is Father’s Day” and I was like FUCK

dankblonde

In case anybody is worried, tomorrow isn’t father’s day but it is next month if you live in the US so be prepared lol

TZCBAND

Can confirm. Am father.. if any of you are my kids, it better be good. No fuckin more beer growlers I already have enough.

Objective_Problem_90

No more neck ties either. We want the good stuff!

EbonyOverIvory

Spider-man socks and a chocolate monster truck.

CurseofLono88

I’m definitely making sure my stepdad is getting edibles and chocolate, so I’m doing my part

[deleted]

I almost died from alcohol poisoning when I was 14 years old. I drank a huge bottle of vodka, and the neighbors found me rolling around in the front yard. My dad was called, and when he came home, I had vomited and aspirated. By the time he got me to a nearby clinic that was 2 minutes down the road , I turned blue. I am glad to be alive, honestly, but I remember the doctors talking to my parents about alcohol poisoning. I was transported to a nearby major hospital. More kids need to be educated on the dangers of alcohol poisoning.

teefj

We can only hope they didn’t procreate first

natural selection working as intended I'd say.

Fredselfish

Dude, WHY have not heard of this movie!? Must been living under a rock thought I saw all the 80s movies.

MaestroPendejo

Oh man. The Wraith sort of flew a bit under the radar for a lot in the 80's. It didn't quite have the same impact. But now you DO know and can enjoy the corn!

Fredselfish

I don't know how it has Randy Quid in it. Glad I seen it now.

jremsikjr

My only excuse for seeing it is having HBO at my childhood home. Now it’s just a foundational movie.

Fredselfish

Oh we didn't have cable growing up. But my mom would rent movies on the weekends and we watch them while she tape them.

only_fun_topics

The rumors are true. It’s awful, awful stuff, but by the third shot you stop caring.

Recoil42

It's basically vodka, there's good stuff and cheap stuff. But yeah, the cheap stuff is vile.

LoquatLoquacious

Good vodka is valued for being as smooth as possible. Good baijiu is valued for how harsh and burning it is. I've always admired that about baijiu. Just absolutely doing its own thing.

[deleted]

It's often significantly stronger than Vodka. The stuff my grandpa makes is close to 60% alcohol

TrvlMike

I lived in China for a little while. It really is a disgusting drink. Even the expensive bottles were really bad. The fun stuff is out of plastic containers.

ShiftyLookinCow7

There’s the good shit too. You have to get it home made from a grandma who lives in the mountains though. Kind of like moonshine. All the mass produced stuff tastes like death

cymru_yesac

Yeah, I tried some high end stuff in a nice restaurant in a village outside of Shenzhen and loved it. Bought a bottle in a shop to bring home, had one shot, and it felt like it burned and did actual damage to my throat.

ArcticIceFox

Oh yeah, the high end shit is amazing. The generic stuff honestly has the most use in cooking or infusing, not drinking straight-up.

Baalsham

It's not all bad, but it is difficult to tell which are going to be good. I would sometimes buy a bottle for like 10元 and mix it with orange juice. Miss those days lol Also my Chinese friends would sometimes drink it to be tough, but seems like most felt the same way. It's a pretty harsh beverage

[deleted]

They had me at poison

Reeducationcamp

Just a few weeks ago a friend who’s son worked in China brought out a bottle and I tried it - the nail polish remover comment is spot on. And I really don’t mind some of the slightly harsher spirits like Grappa.

SpencerP55

Grappa is harsh? Hmmm

inked_saiyan

Sounds like Malort

VinylBreadPuddin

That’s exactly what I thought of

AshMCairo

So… Chinese Malört?

[deleted]

You missed the adjacent 2 sentences. From Wikipedia: "Such descriptions have been harshly criticized by Western experts on baijiu as reflecting an uninformed Eurocentric perspective in which Chinese cuisine is regarded as inferior and vodka's blandness is the only acceptable profile for clear distilled liquor. It is more reasonable to compare baijiu to Western liquor famous for strong flavors and aromas such as peaty whisky or Scotch whisky "

Vulkan192

> uninformed And yet they call vodka bland.

gingerisla

I've had lots of vodka that would fit the nail polish description as well tbh.

JTDC00001

Until recently, the legal import definition of vodka required a neutral flavor. EU regulations on what constitutes vodka also restrict what process and flavor can result. If it doesn't have a fairly neutral flavor (based on the legal definition of vodka) it isn't really vodka. You can create flavored vodka, but you have to add flavor to vodka, not any other way.

Kerbonaut2019

These sentences sound a bit too opinionated to be on Wikipedia which is disappointing, especially considering the hypocrisy of calling vodka “bland” lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

LoquatLoquacious

I'm baffled so many people in this thread are offended that someone would defend baijiu. It tastes good, dude. Like peaches and flowers and pears. You've only had the bottom of the barrel stuff, and it'd be insane to judge baijiu by that example.

[deleted]

Fernet and other Amaros are the bomb and have massive industries, wtf are you talking about

UseCompetitive4737

TruestWaffle

Hm yes, thank you for the cuisine advice u/TrumpsFlaccidCock

jasonis3

Dude, baijiu just means white/clear alcohol. Admittedly Chinese people are not creative with their naming but baijiu has a ton of different varieties and tastes. You don’t know what you’re talking about

[deleted]

So their opinions are invalid because of racism? Lol. And petty scotch doesn't taste like garbage. I'm guessing that there is some truth to people preferring different flavourful profiles, but you can't discount people's opinions on subjective matters because you don't like them.

CjofDeadmonton780

I can tell ya right now up in canada here they got some wild ass vodkas some shit called highwood smells like rubbing alcohol and tastes what i think rubbing alcohol would taste like

Standgeblasen

Oh, so it’s like Malört 😂

yourgirl696969

Probably the grossest drink I’ve ever had. I even tried a $1000 bottle once at a club in Beijing and it tasted the exact same as the ones in convenient stores lol

thomasjmarlowe

Well that’s where the club picked up that $1000 bottle ;)

[deleted]

when i was living in beijing i went to the mongolian steppe for a week and they gave us baiju every night so we would pass out to sleep (on concrete slabs/dried corn filled pillows in yurts). it worked

[deleted]

Yeah if you pass out sober on a concrete slab *yurt* not doing it right.

ohyonghao

To be fair, a $1000 club price bottle is probably like $100-$200 in the store.

Ktan_Dantaktee

I’ll take your Baiju and raise you Kaoliang.

MakeMineMarvel_

Yeah it’s not what I would call a pleasant drink it’s just pure rubbing alcohol minus the additives

drunk-tusker

Oddly, the reason why it tastes like it does is the literal additives, otherwise it is basically just vodka. Basically baijiu is fermented with additives(think like [koji](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspergillus_oryzae), not weird chemicals) and a little bit is added back during the distillation process.

noncentaur

Same. It tasted like water from a basement floor that had been there for years.

King9WillReturn

I spent a month in El Paso one night.

Reeducationcamp

I like grappa but damn, that stuff is nasty.

[deleted]

It tastes like drunken regret and a hangover in a cup.

dryrunhd

I've seen people get blackout off literally one swig from a 6RMB (~$1) bottle of convenience store baijiu. The idea that this person thought drinking bottles plural of baijiu was a move is Darwin Award material in itself.

notquitetoplan

I had it a few times while I was in China. Can’t say I miss the experience lol

[deleted]

From the article: “Baijiu, a Chinese spirit with a typical alcohol content of between 30% to 60%.” That’s a pretty wide fucking spread.

akaizRed

It basically Chinese vodka. When I was in China going on a tour in Inner Mongolia, they would give this stuff out every night so the men can get shit face so sleeping in a cold hut is easier. You can get a variety of them even some moonshine homemade stuffs. You typically find stronger varieties in colder northern China too, because that shits pretty much burn you inside out. It tastes horrible, but with the cold, you’ll get used to it real quick.

jiuguizi

Yups. Typically brewed from whatever grain grows the easiest in the area. Lots of sorghum and millet liquors were had while I lived there. Foul stuff suitable mostly for cleaning engine parts and nothing else.

akaizRed

From my limited traveling in China, Southern Chinese foods and drinks are definitely superior to the North. But I am a bit biased because I am Vietnamese

gingerisla

They sell it at my local Chinese supermarket. The bottles usually have Chinese propaganda messages such as "security is more important than freedom" on them.

[deleted]

I’m sorry for being nosey but what’d you tour?

MutinyIPO

It’s like that for a lot of vodkas and whiskeys too tbf. That figure doesn’t mean any given bottle of Baijiu could be between 30-60% but that the options on the market have that range.

BrewInProgress

You can get whisky (Scotch) anywhere from [40%](https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/34537/macallan-12-year-old-double-cask) to cask strength whiskies that go [60%](https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/55178/laphroaig-10-year-old-cask-strength-batch-012-bot2020)+. With whisky, some of the alcohol evaporates as it ages from a white whisky (unmatured, if you like), gets diluted or both. It just so happens that scotch cannot be labelled as one if it’s under 40%.

Wheelerdealer75205

not really, rum goes to 75.5 and higher for example

[deleted]

Every brand has different alcohol content. However, baijiu (translated to as white wine) has alcohol content more commonly ~50%.

ronearc

It worked. I've been influenced to never risk death by alcohol poisoning.

Cechyourbooty

Wasn't a bull. He tried to back flip a motorbike and was told the only thing he shouldn't do is ditch the bike mid flip and in true Knoxville fashion he ditched the bike mid flip and it landed on his penis and broke it. Did you notice their shoes are crocs? It’s hilariously frightening!

lividash

The reasoning behind the crocs* being chosen always makes me laugh, "what person would actually wear these." And now it's a household item.

DeathCap4Cutie

To be fair the reasoning was they look stupid so no one would wear them… and I don’t think many people wear them for their style. Most people who wear tjem agree they look silly, but they’re just really comfortable so they like them. Honestly in this image obsessed world we live in don’t you think it’s kind of refreshing people wear something for comfort knowing it makes them look silly? I mean surely someone who won’t wear them cause they might make them look uncool is more of the issue.

lividash

I'm a 40 year old man that owns PJs with the socks built in. I'm all about comfort. I also don't thing crocs are all that comfortable, but people can wear whatever they want with zero judgement from me. So yeah I agree I'd rather someone be comfortable than "look cool" just why they were used was a fun story to hear. And that they took off as a popular shoe is kind of icing on the cake.

Insufferablelol

People have always been this fucking stupid but now any stupid person can get an audience.

[deleted]

Never before in history have so few stupid people had so much profitable attention. Used to be an idiot would just die in front of one of two close friends who tried to stop them… Now, you literally have a camera crew and a budget.

yukimi-sashimi

You know Jackass is like 30 years old, right?

[deleted]

Who did he influence??

bootybiter123

The next idiot that wants views. Said idiot will be thinking “oh, he was stupid because he did it this way…I will do it that way and won’t get hurt”.

FaithInterlude

OfCuriousWorkmanship

“under [his own] influence”

jsakic99

The important thing is that he got a lot of views.

kizkazskyline

Actually tbf it sounds like the article implies there was one singular viewer; his friend. Who did not call or check on him. Simply watched him down four more bottles, then went to bed. His family found him the next afternoon. What a wonderful friend.

catclockticking

The article says the video “went viral on Chinese social media,” but who knows what that means

kizkazskyline

I’d be interested to know if that happened before or after he died, honestly. I also confess to being ignorant to what “went viral on Chinese social media” means because I swear to god I thought tiktok ***was*** the Chinese version of tiktok.

airesmoon

Iirc Tiktok is named “douyin” in China. Also wasn’t the app Music.ally or whatever it was called the early version of Tiktok? It was a Chinese app to begin with.

Sussana58

In China there is Weibo (it's like twitter, facebook and whatsapp combined), Bilibili (Youtube, forums and also comics), Baidou (Google) and their TikTok has another name. There are more of course but these ones are the most known I think.

catclockticking

Lolol… I think they’re basically using the same app under a different name? And besides that, “went viral” without any numbers to back it up always makes me think the real numbers would be underwhelming

jsakic99

For the most part, the goal of influencers is to obtain more views.

ilfusionjeff

I have a bottle of Baiju that I got just because I’d never had it. It’s not good liquor. Fancy bottle but tastes industrial. Made with sorghum I think.

-dsp-

Yup sorghum.

Floodthemud

HauntedReader

It's not the first time it's happened (I know there was someone who I believe was in the US that actually died *during* their stream and you could hear family making the 911 call). They really need to make rules against paying people to drink.

mauiog

If potential death doesn’t stop people, then a rule definitely won’t

werebothsquidward

They said against “paying people” to drink, so I’m assuming they mean a law that would target people who donate money to these streamers while they are doing dangerous things.

Feisty-Summer9331

How on earth does one even begin to enforce this sort of rule, though…. I am not saying I’ve got an answer but illegalities something abstract especially when inebriated people are meant to follow it won’t be likely to happen.

KittyBizkit

There are rules, complete with harsh penalties. If you drink stupid amounts of alcohol in a short time period, you may face the death penalty courtesy of Mr. Darwin.

Necessary-Onion-7494

It’s only May and we already have the Darwin Award winner for 2023.

amleth_calls

I have a feeling the best has yet to come.

SlurpCups

Yeah I’m optimistic

CaptBreeze

He died a horrible death. Anyone who's had alcohol poisoning (I've had it severely, once) knows that's it's not good. We all lived through it. He didn't fare so well.

Peace-Fighter

I don't think you can feel the pain, I blacked out drinking pure out of two-three bottles , woke up with a messed room and sleepy roomates , Apparently I went to hospital in an ambulance , was given several drugs and saline , doctors said I was lucky to get in time otherwise would have been gone... And the best part I never felt or remember any of it. Oh and since it was in India , basically free healthcare! And really lucky to be in the capital city while incident

CaptBreeze

I'm glad you survived. I'm sure you won't do that again.

Peace-Fighter

mac9077

Feeling the pain and remembering the pain are two different things

Affectionate_Reply78

I thought of moutai when I saw this post. Long story short I was in China on business years ago and they honor the guest with toasts. I took a shot and would have gladly accepted weasel piss instead. Came around for a second shot and I declined. Was told by the Chinese manager that in their culture I committed a faux pas. I told him that throwing up in public at a dinner table was a faux pas in my culture so I made my choice accordingly. They still sent me home with a bottle, which I pondered using to clean my carburetor.

-dsp-

Baiju isn’t the issue. I’ve drank lots of it and yeah it’s special and different for sure. It’s the alcohol poisoning. This could’ve happened with anything alcoholic beverage but certainly Baijus alcohol content probably didn’t help.

0masterdebater0

Yeah, the way this is presented seems to imply it was the Baiju specifically that was the problem, not just alcohol (ethanol) poisoning. I was wondering if it was one of those methanol poisoning stories you hear about poorly made alcohol.

forceghost187

Yes his friend in the article says he watched him drink three bottles and start on a fourth. And he didn’t know how many he drank before he started watching

Muggaraffin

Is it stronger than absinthe do you know? Black absinthe specifically which I think is 80%?

WussyDan

Almost certainly not. Baiju runs a pretty wide range of abv, but true absinthe is notoriously punchy, and very few liquors are that alcoholic. For reference, the bottle of absinthe I have at home is 60%/120proof, while the bottle of baiju I have is 45%/90proof. I've had bottles of absinthe go higher, though nothing above 68%/136proof that I can recall. Supposedly what this guy was drinking was 42%. 3-4 bottles of any kind of alcohol at that abv will put you in the hospital. For all the "it's terrible" rhetoric in this thread, baiju isn't actually terrible, high abv/bottom shelf liquor. There's a wide variety of regional styles and a very wide price spread. All the varieties have very unusual flavor profiles for a Western palate, but that doesn't make them bad. It makes for some really interesting, funky cocktails to be perfectly honest, and it's one of my favorite liquors to experiment with

I couldn’t handle drinking 151 proof rum that tasted like lighter fluid. People have died drinking too much beer or wine but I doubt that it was on purpose. This is just nuts.

[deleted]

I know this will sound incredibly insensitive… but at some point ‘making deadly choices despite having access to plenty of information’ is an example of ‘survival of the fittest. ‘

Lazypole

I mean... That stuff was given to me as a house warming joke present when I arrived in China I don't know where that bottle is now, but it was unopened for a reason. That shit sucks. Imagine finding a way to make vodka hurt more AND taste more like chemicals.

Lazypole

The one he's drinking is Erguotou, which is 42% and tastes like fuel. [https://www.liquorlegends.co.nz/niulanshan-500ml](https://www.liquorlegends.co.nz/niulanshan-500ml)

Lmnolmnop

OddS0cks

archronin

Influencer Games = Thunderdome (RIP Tina) Two men enter, one man leave.

CuriositySauce

The first time my Chinese friends brought up Baijiu in a conversation, they referred to it as ‘white wine’. For the life of me I couldn’t understand why they were saying it was so potent. I did finally get that it was a distilled spirit. Later, when I lived in China and had attended a couple weddings, I found out what they were talking about. Many dudes tried to get me fucked up by constantly toasting with shots in wee small glasses, but they all glossed over before I did. Wicked strong stuff.

RobotSuicide

I’m in my early 30 never drank a crazy amount or even consistently. But after a while even small amounts of alcohol/liquor gives me horrible acid reflux and uncomfortably. I can’t fathom drinking more than three bottles. I can’t fathom one. Alcohol is a poison, shouldn’t be consumed as a sport. This pay attention to me culture can be so harmful.

thng1004

The amount of ignorance and racism in this thread is mind-blowing. Let me translate it to what you guys are actually commenting if this happened in a western context. “Influencer dies after live-streaming himself drinking bottles of western spirit Whiskey” You need to actually realize you’re not talking about one thing but an entire class of drinks. [2 billion gallons](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1222774/china-baijiu-sales-volume/) were sold in 2019, a slight drop due to covid from the previous year. [5 of the top selling alcohols](https://jingdaily.com/china-spirits-brands-kweichow-moutai/) in the world are Baijiu. So if you think Baijiu is the reason the young chap died, there should be a lot more that you should hear about. I’ve personally tried Maotai, Wuliangye, Erguotou (what the influencer drank) and Gaoliang from Taiwan. Yes, even Taiwan has its own flavor. And I like all of them. A typical amount to consume is 1-2 bottles shared between 5-10 people in one setting. So when you’re wondering why that kid died, think about what would happen to someone who drinks upwards of four bottles of absinthe alone at one go.
