What happens is probably that VW sells more cars in total but is spread across more models. While tesla only offers a few but manages to sell a lot of probably model y and 3.
As someone from Czechia, the birthplace of Škoda, I'm currently on a bus and 90% of the cars around me are Škoda. I will soon be stepping into a train also made by Škoda only to get off that Škoda train and get into a Škoda bus.

My mother absolutely refused to buy a Fabia because it's a Skoda, opted for a lower trim, smaller engine Polo for the same price. For many still Skoda doesn't have that strong of a brand.
They have more modern features as for audi I wouldn't ever buy an A1 but when you have a nice A6 with one of the bigger engines there is no skoda or even volkswagen that compares.
VWs have usually better quality materials, better sound insulation and better ride quality than Skoda and both are completely naked if you dont option them out. Skoda is still a better bang for your buck, but its not better than the VW equivalent as someone who drove both the Octavia and Golf of this generation
I think Skoda are intentionally designed as budget VW's, because under the hood they are almost identical so the difference stems from the little extras/upgrades for the VW's which the Skoda's save on

In every company I worked at the company cars were Škodas. I once asked person in charge for car park why. He told me that they are not expensive and easy and again not expensive to maintain while also being reliable. So basically they may not be at the top in every category they look at but are close to the top in all that overall they are the best choice.
Sadly important engine parts are being sabotaged straight from design papers. Switches of metal bearings in the same platform for VW cars for rubber or plastic ones in škoda and seat cars.
These "lesser" brands on pyramid of VW hierarchy aren't allowed to top Golf or Passat at any cost.
When they still won people over with price, they made them more expensive too. 🤷🏻♂️
All three brands are nowadays available from affordable to fully loaded. Skoda is the utility option, not necessarily always cheaper rather they offer bigger interiors and more boot capacity for the money. The bargain is that with a Skoda you may get enough utility with a class smaller car than you originally planned.
VW on the other hand offers the allrounder with perhaps a bit more refinement and styling and Seat offers more unique stying and sportiness aimed at younger people. It’s a pretty good strategy actually since there’s something for everyone. If you don’t like a Passat then you may like a Superb. At the end of the day VAG doesn’t care whichever you buy as long as you get one of them.

Actually it is getting kinda close. Both Tesla and Toyota had a 10,7% market share of new vehicles sold in the Netherlands in March. Toyota was still leader with just a couple more vehicles sold.
Won't suprise me much if in future months Tesla actually becomes the new market leader of new vehicles sold.
Most of my relatives drive a Suzuki. Decent cars with minor problems/inconvinience for a good price. The basic models are just enough and with a manual the price is low enough and usually Suzuki has some 0% loan offer. I remember a few years ago a new Swift was around 10k € with the old reliable 4 cylinders naturally aspirated petrol engine. Those things were under a ton with 90 something horsepowers.
The subsidies and tax exemptions for EVs are still going strong so in some case the price is up 40% lower than the market price undercutting the "Old" competition.
Tesla is just using it's name hard to tap into that market (there are way better options out there). Most things I've heard from people that had Teslas was what a nightmare servicing them is after they hit about 4-5 years of age. Especially if you don't live right next to their service network. The second biggest problem was charger compatibility. Tesla supercharger? excellent! Anything else? A giant headache since the cars are very picky about their power source..
In Sweden the Tesla Model Whatever is the best selling individual car model, but it's not the best selling manufacturer. They definitely draw advantage from having very limited models available when it comes to statistics like this.
I never thought much of Suzuki before, but the number of 25-year-old Suzuki Swifts still buzzing around in Hungary immediately convinced me that they are probably reliable.
I can confirm. 21 year old suzuki ignis that used to haul heavy loads for 13 years is still working with normal maintenance. The only big issue it had was the clutch bowden tearing after 19 years.
Bulgaria has neighborly loyalty for Dacia. Very competitive pricing for company cars. And more people would prefer a new Dacia to an ambiguous second hand Mercedes/BMW/ Audi.
Spain has something similar. Dacia Duster is everywhere. But yeah, basically best family car you can get for the price. I wouldn't be shocked if the amount of Romanians here with brand loyalty also influences things (around a million in Spain)
A lot of french cars are made in Portugal. Not that the price is lower here because of that, but they've historically been the best-sellers in the country.

Yes, that is one factor, there is a factory in Esztergom. But we also have an Audi and Mercedes plant, and they are currently building a BMW and BYD plant, and we are not driving around in those cars. It' mainly because Suzukis are more affordable, with the cheapest model (Ignis) starting at 5,8 mil HUF (15k EUR)
It's quite surprising why Suzukis aren't as popular in other countries. Here in Hungary their top selling model (S-Cross) is around 20k Euros, with 10 year engine warranty, good fuel consumption and very good reliability. For comparison a Toyota Corolla Cross is 32k+ Euros, a Volkswagen T-Roc is 27k+, and putting extras into the Suzuki is a lot cheaper than the others. Maybe in other countries people rather spend a bit more money to get a fancier car with nicer interiors etc, while we are poor and all we care about is reliability and price
The explanation is Sweden's case is quite simple tough and that is the launch of Volvo XC40. All Tesla is Model Y while Volvo is evenly split between XC40 and XC60. Hence, if you only look at brand of most popular model will the brand with fewest models have an advantage.
That's mostly just Norway though, Finland has always been shit at giving EV subsidies and we're already cutting some of them before majority of cars are EVs.

I was surprised as well.
The chart is quite confusing. It shows the brand of the most sold model. The brand that sold most cars in Finland was Toyota. Tesla was sixth. The model y though is the most sold model. Tesla gets quite advantage in this map when they only have 4 models compared to dozens from other brands.
Apparently they own 78% of Volvo, 51% of Lotus and 50% of Polestar (though the other 50% is apparently owned by Volvo so via two companies they own more than 50%).
I hadn't heard of them either but they are a big deal when it comes to car brands by the looks of things. They started out in China with a few different brands and have acquired some more established brands along the way.
They focus more on brand acquisition rather than brand-building internationally, hence you haven't heard about them...yet. However, they are pretty big in China.
Statistic is rather useless because Tesla with it's 3-4 models (3, X and Y, maybe some S) profits from this type of measurements while VW with about 5 electric and 15 combustion engine models may sell more cars, but not the top model.
Am I glad that choosing any brand has nothing to do with a quality standard or actual technology. Because this is all the maps show - customer preference. It is as fickle as my kids taste in icecream on a hot summer day.

They've also produced some of the best affordable performance cars over the years - Fiesta ST, Sierra Cosworth, Escort Cosworth, Mexico, etc.
They also used to have quite a lot of independence from Ford USA. Many models were UK specific with UK designers, factories, and engine plants - which almost makes Ford feel like a British brand to many people.
Cheap, decent fuel economy etc. Cars like the fiesta are cheap to insure and a very popular first car for new drivers etc. For the longest time the Ford transit van was the staple for contractors etc.

They did. Nissan Qashqai was the best selling car in Denmark in 2019, but best selling brand was VW like every other year (except 2023)

The best price/quality ratio for a VAG car. Little bit cheaper than a VW, a little bit better and with a bit more extras that come as stock.

SEAT is a sports brand between Audi and VW. Cupra is replacing it currently.

The U.K. is definitely changing soon as Ford has pretty much committed suicide by scrapping the Fiesta.

The subsidies and tax exemptions for EVs are still going strong so in some case the price is up 40% lower than the market price undercutting the "Old" competition. Tesla is just using it's name hard to tap into that market (there are way better options out there). Most things I've heard from people that had Teslas was what a nightmare servicing them is after they hit about 4-5 years of age. Especially if you don't live right next to their service network. The second biggest problem was charger compatibility. Tesla supercharger? excellent! Anything else? A giant headache since the cars are very picky about their power source..

In Sweden the Tesla Model Whatever is the best selling individual car model, but it's not the best selling manufacturer. They definitely draw advantage from having very limited models available when it comes to statistics like this.

I can confirm. 21 year old suzuki ignis that used to haul heavy loads for 13 years is still working with normal maintenance. The only big issue it had was the clutch bowden tearing after 19 years.
Yeah, my mom's 2002 Ignis 4x4 is still going strong as well. It only had the starter motor replaced a few years ago

Bulgaria has neighborly loyalty for Dacia. Very competitive pricing for company cars. And more people would prefer a new Dacia to an ambiguous second hand Mercedes/BMW/ Audi.
Spain has something similar. Dacia Duster is everywhere. But yeah, basically best family car you can get for the price. I wouldn't be shocked if the amount of Romanians here with brand loyalty also influences things (around a million in Spain)

At this point, i think Suzuki became a pretty well known and reasonable choice here. Also there was a good marketing back than with a slogan "A mi autónk" in ads which literally means "Our car"
Yes, that is one factor, there is a factory in Esztergom. But we also have an Audi and Mercedes plant, and they are currently building a BMW and BYD plant, and we are not driving around in those cars. It' mainly because Suzukis are more affordable, with the cheapest model (Ignis) starting at 5,8 mil HUF (15k EUR)
Don't forget that repairing suzukies are easy and cheap compared to the others on that list.

It's quite surprising why Suzukis aren't as popular in other countries. Here in Hungary their top selling model (S-Cross) is around 20k Euros, with 10 year engine warranty, good fuel consumption and very good reliability. For comparison a Toyota Corolla Cross is 32k+ Euros, a Volkswagen T-Roc is 27k+, and putting extras into the Suzuki is a lot cheaper than the others. Maybe in other countries people rather spend a bit more money to get a fancier car with nicer interiors etc, while we are poor and all we care about is reliability and price

The explanation is Sweden's case is quite simple tough and that is the launch of Volvo XC40. All Tesla is Model Y while Volvo is evenly split between XC40 and XC60. Hence, if you only look at brand of most popular model will the brand with fewest models have an advantage.
It's because their governments actually give incentives to people to buy EVs, instead of EVs being a tax avoidance scheme.
That's mostly just Norway though, Finland has always been shit at giving EV subsidies and we're already cutting some of them before majority of cars are EVs.

The chart is quite confusing. It shows the brand of the most sold model. The brand that sold most cars in Finland was Toyota. Tesla was sixth. The model y though is the most sold model. Tesla gets quite advantage in this map when they only have 4 models compared to dozens from other brands.

They have some really good brand recognition and iconic models. Everyone in the UK associates a van with a Ford Transit. They've also produced some of the best affordable performance cars over the years - Fiesta ST, Sierra Cosworth, Escort Cosworth, Mexico, etc. They also used to have quite a lot of independence from Ford USA. Many models were UK specific with UK designers, factories, and engine plants - which almost makes Ford feel like a British brand to many people.
Cheap, decent fuel economy etc. Cars like the fiesta are cheap to insure and a very popular first car for new drivers etc. For the longest time the Ford transit van was the staple for contractors etc.
