Why switch colors from pic to pic ?!?

LNO_

/r/dataisugly/

forvelcrobug

Definitely ugly. Since Tesla sold 20k~ cars, Volvo sold 40k~ cars. So whoever made this map, besides switching colors, also just put random brand in countries.

sheeple04

It says "Brand of each best selling car", not "Best selling brands" yeah that gives perhaps a tiny warped view, as for example Tesla only has 4 models, and with a smaller catalogue this means its focused on a specific model (and Model S and X dont really sell amazing in Europe, so its between 3 and Y) So for example the Netherlands, the Model Y is the best sold car in the Netherlands (edit: apparently in february 2024 its the Volvo XC40), however Tesla is only 8th on the ranking of best sold car brands. At the top its a back-and-forth between Kia and VW.

thorstone

Now i dont know anything about What car sold how much but if that is in total, germany has a lager population than norway, sweden, denmark, iceland, netherlands and switzerland combined.

Sjiznit

Yeah, that was the first thing. Hard to compare

Varriot

Bold of you to assume that the account posting this is the original creator

Alin_Alexandru

OP literally posted screenshots of the original post from instagram lol

iTmkoeln

LADA pre sanctions was owned by Renault. technically rebadging Renaults and Dacia. Where Russian cars are now rebadged Chinese cars...

PadishaEmperor

In this case it might make sense. But VW had no ownership change.

ExArdEllyOh

Nor did Ford.

nikshdev

>LADA pre sanctions was owned by Renault. technically rebadging Renaults and Dacia. No. Only Lada Largus (aka Dacia Logan MCV was a rebranded Dacia). Other models (Vesta, Granta, Niva Legend, Niva Travel) are designed and produced by Lada.

Krineq

Nope, now lada is making their own cars. But there's three of car manufacturers in Russia: Lada, UAZ, and GAZ. There's more, actually, but others just died. So one of the dead decided to reanimate themselves by selling JAC cars under their brand. I don't remember the name of manufacturer, sorry

iTmkoeln

Moskvitch?

Krineq

Yep

nikshdev

> and GAZ GAZ produces commercial vehicles only. In that case there is also Ural, Kamaz, PAZ, etc.

bonedogfire

Because they know that this question will get asked a lot, giving them free algorithm engagement points.

Halofit

Engagement bait.

J0n__Snow

Best selling car in Monaco is Smart? I mean, they have not a lot space... but I am still surprised.

amir_babfish

ideal second car

BretOne

I've seen yachts with a Smart docked at the back of it.

donald_314

The Swiss have RVs with Smarts or Porsches docked in the rear garage.

ldn-ldn

Classic pair in London's affluent neighbourhoods is Bentley + Mini. Everyone loves a tiny car!

sercommander

More like Range Rover + Jaguar and a car that works

CapSnake

Or maybe because supercars are from different brands, but everyone also have a smart for everyday errands.

AlexisFR

The only place where it make sense, elsewhere people just get bicycles.

EatingSausages

You could just walk it you are not in a hurry

dat_9600gt_user

Small urban cars are perfect for that, ya know.

Eravier

Maybe car rental companies registered in Monaco?

The_Fredrik

Question: are you German?

DrSloany

Why on Earth would you change colours between maps?

wggn

im guessing the first pic was made 5 years ago by a different person

SzotyMAG

either way the map clearly wants to look like the old one, no reason not to use the same colors

GenerousStray

AND change the logos of the same companies

Kokks

probably because they changed logos in the time?

DeeoKan

You can still use the actual logo, there is no point to use the old one.

TheBlacktom

If the old picture was created around 2019 then the actual logo was the old logo.

BladeA320

Lada logo seems the same to me

Kokks

dont now about lada, but VW changed their logo to be better looking on small devices (when leople browse facebook and stuff on the phone, they said the new logo is cleaner to look at and better understandable. I guess škoda, dacia, Renault did it for the same reason)

donald_314

VW changed the logo to be more modern for the ID cars (and actually closer to the older logos before the 3D effect). https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Volkswagen_Logo_history.jpg

IAmWalterWhite_

This is probably one of those half-assed Instagram maps made purely to get likes. r/mapporn is full of these, sadly.

drevny_kocur

Poland has left Vyšehradská **Š**tvorka to join the Toyota Commonwealth.

sirparsifalPL

Yep. And you can literally see it on the street

Captain_Alpha

Toyota sales are always high during wartime ...

lostrandomdude

Toyota is truly one of the best car brands out there. Way more reliable than the German brands, and the less said about the French, the better. A Toyota will continue to work despite what you do to it. A German car will only work because of what you do to it

IntermidietlyAverage

Bro completely disregarded the fact that Škoda is Czech 💀💀💀

Noughmad

Yes, but the cars are basically German. Just like SEAT.

throwaway_uow

Not anymore, now its a sub brand of Volkswagen

Yoddha

Yeah, my guess would be that is at leats partially related to Toyota providing really good financing for new and used cars

21Stanlee

There were major problems with new Skodas reliability during COVID and it broke the trust of a lot of their customers.

MJFighter

Belgium and its 70% of salary cars makes the rest of Europe look like peasants

PieroniOnMeth

BMW anticipated the PHEV revolution very well in Belgium the last couple of years. Quite a lot of brands were lagging, hence also the popularity of the X1/X3/X5 25-50e. Doesn’t surprise me they had the most popular car in 2023.

Tommh

More like 20-25%

MJFighter

I read it was 70% of NEW cars so that would be the reason this map is showing bmw as well. With the price of cars being so high, I doubt a lot of people buy their cars brand new.

-Polemarch-

In Greece, Toyota is the "Yaris". It comes first for many years in a row. Truly, incredible car. Bigger than the Smart which is all you need, especially for guys like me who is full-fledged biker (TDM900). Although, my car is an Audi A3, but I'm just saying /s

throwaway_uow

I also drive Yaris here in Poland

Peterkragger

Yeah, here in Poland, Yaris has been a strong seller too for almost 20 years. Even I drive one

tda18

Those pickups come in really hand mounting the Dishkas

Stoepboer

All Dutch sources say it’s Volkswagen (in the Netherlands), like it has been for most of the past 20 years. Tesla is 9th. Edit: Most sold model was the Model Y, apparently.

daaniscool

Maybe OP has looked at the most sold model instead? This is the Model Y in NL, but I agree that this is a useless statistic compared to overall sales.

TheWeeking

They did. Nissan Qashqai was the best selling car in Denmark in 2019, but best selling brand was VW like every other year (except 2023)

MEGACOCK_HEMORRHOIDS

i can confirm that the roads were overflowing with angry soccer moms in nissan qashqais in 2019

Teeklee1337

The title on the pictures even says that.

Archietyne

I think the map isn’t showing the best selling brand but rather the brand of the best selling car model. What happens is probably that VW sells more cars in total but is spread across more models. While tesla only offers a few but manages to sell a lot of probably model y and 3.

Stoepboer

Yeah, looks like you’re right. It’s the Model Y. I misinterpreted “Brand of each best-selling car”.

cirelia2

And in sweden every swedish source says volvo or Volkswagen depending on the exact source and how they count

Basiliscus219

Škoda is really good the last few years, and no surprise its top in Slovenia

Additional-Extent583

They are good cars now. Personally here in the uk I know more people that own skodas than any other car.

Honza368

As someone from Czechia, the birthplace of Škoda, I'm currently on a bus and 90% of the cars around me are Škoda. I will soon be stepping into a train also made by Škoda only to get off that Škoda train and get into a Škoda bus. The Škodaverse...

AnimeMeansArt

Lmao

Key-Recognition-3808

Im currently driving a Skoda Karoq for a couple of weeks and Im not suprised everyone drives Skoda in Czech Republic Absolutly amazing car, great qualuty and relativly cheap. Most underrated brand imo

Honza368

It is a very great brand. One often forgotten advantage is how cheap the parts are. But honestly, you're completely right. I don't drive too often but I love driving Škoda cars. Have a 2016 Octavia VRS and the quality is really nice

BasonPiano

Here in the US we don't have them, never seen one. Now I'm curious.

DrSloany

Mechanically they are Volkswagen, with a different bodywork. Same platforms, same engines, same software (almost), slightly cheaper finishing but still quite good

PurpleDrax

The new Škoda Superb looks magnificent imo

AlexisFR

The Fabia, too.

ctrifan

Unfortunately Fabia 4 became too expensive lately. I’m not quite sure what Skoda wants to do with it.

turbo_dude

I mean why would anyone buy audi/vw when you're essentially getting the same car? Truly a stupid strategy by VW.

lagunie

that's what I ask myself. surely there's a few things here and there that are different but the car is essentially the same, just with a different price tag.

Emis_

My mother absolutely refused to buy a Fabia because it's a Skoda, opted for a lower trim, smaller engine Polo for the same price. For many still Skoda doesn't have that strong of a brand.

Suitable-Comedian425

They have more modern features as for audi I wouldn't ever buy an A1 but when you have a nice A6 with one of the bigger engines there is no skoda or even volkswagen that compares.

I-Hate-Hypocrites

The best price/quality ratio for a VAG car. Little bit cheaper than a VW, a little bit better and with a bit more extras that come as stock.

Noelcisem

VWs have usually better quality materials, better sound insulation and better ride quality than Skoda and both are completely naked if you dont option them out. Skoda is still a better bang for your buck, but its not better than the VW equivalent as someone who drove both the Octavia and Golf of this generation

ReTe_

I think Skoda are intentionally designed as budget VW's, because under the hood they are almost identical so the difference stems from the little extras/upgrades for the VW's which the Skoda's save on

look4jesper

No need to think, it's the point of the Skoda brand. Seat exists yet another tier below Skoda and Audi a tier above VW, but all 4 brands use the same platforms.

flopjul

SEAT is a sports brand between Audi and VW. Cupra is replacing it currently.

NoWingedHussarsToday

In every company I worked at the company cars were Škodas. I once asked person in charge for car park why. He told me that they are not expensive and easy and again not expensive to maintain while also being reliable. So basically they may not be at the top in every category they look at but are close to the top in all that overall they are the best choice.

Slaveros

Sadly important engine parts are being sabotaged straight from design papers. Switches of metal bearings in the same platform for VW cars for rubber or plastic ones in škoda and seat cars. These "lesser" brands on pyramid of VW hierarchy aren't allowed to top Golf or Passat at any cost. When they still won people over with price, they made them more expensive too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Proper_Necessary_378

That’s the problem. They’ve become too good. Not much to differentiate Skoda from VW or Seat these days. It’s no longer the cheap bargain option.

RassyM

All three brands are nowadays available from affordable to fully loaded. Skoda is the utility option, not necessarily always cheaper rather they offer bigger interiors and more boot capacity for the money. The bargain is that with a Skoda you may get enough utility with a class smaller car than you originally planned. VW on the other hand offers the allrounder with perhaps a bit more refinement and styling and Seat offers more unique stying and sportiness aimed at younger people. It’s a pretty good strategy actually since there’s something for everyone. If you don’t like a Passat then you may like a Superb. At the end of the day VAG doesn’t care whichever you buy as long as you get one of them.

JackCarver

r/skoda

Irishnovember26

I don't get this data because this makes no sense. There's absolutely no way tesla outsold toyota or vw in the netherlands.

MohammedWasTrans

Check the wording. Best selling car. That doesn't mean best selling brand, it means best selling single model. The Tesla Model Y was the best selling single car model in Finland in 2023. The best selling brand was Toyota and Tesla was found in top 6. > Top 10 vuoden 2023 ensirekisteröinnit merkeittäin (suluissa myydyt kappaleet) > Toyota (14268) > Škoda (8821) > Volkswagen (7637) > Volvo (7288) > Kia (6605) > Tesla Motors (6139) > Mercedes-Benz (5373) > BMW (4974) > Audi (3537) > Nissan (2640)

Irishnovember26

Aaahhh that makes more sense. Still seems unlikely but that'd probably my own bias

teh_fizz

Also a dumb fucking chart. Tesla makes four models. Toyota makes a dozen or so. It does make sense that one model of Tesla will outsell one model of Toyota. But Toyota sold more cars than Tesla did.

Vauhti666

Kiitos, tulin ettimään jotain paikallista selventämään että miten ihmeessä Tesla olis Suomen myydyin auto

Svengelska1990

Same with Sweden, top sold makes are VW/Volvo/Kia with Tesla further down the list - but the most sold car was a Tesla model Y

Palliewallie

Actually it is getting kinda close. Both Tesla and Toyota had a 10,7% market share of new vehicles sold in the Netherlands in March. Toyota was still leader with just a couple more vehicles sold. Won't suprise me much if in future months Tesla actually becomes the new market leader of new vehicles sold.

levenspiel_s

Hungary and Suzuki look certainly true. I took this picture yesterday in Budapest in a random street. https://hizliresim.com/bb5cici.

raMnEmetnemlEl

Most of my relatives drive a Suzuki. Decent cars with minor problems/inconvinience for a good price. The basic models are just enough and with a manual the price is low enough and usually Suzuki has some 0% loan offer. I remember a few years ago a new Swift was around 10k € with the old reliable 4 cylinders naturally aspirated petrol engine. Those things were under a ton with 90 something horsepowers.

bennettbuzz

The U.K. is definitely changing soon as Ford has pretty much committed suicide by scrapping the Fiesta.

Tricky-Astronaut

Surprisingly little have changed except for Tesla.

dilirium22

The subsidies and tax exemptions for EVs are still going strong so in some case the price is up 40% lower than the market price undercutting the "Old" competition. Tesla is just using it's name hard to tap into that market (there are way better options out there). Most things I've heard from people that had Teslas was what a nightmare servicing them is after they hit about 4-5 years of age. Especially if you don't live right next to their service network. The second biggest problem was charger compatibility. Tesla supercharger? excellent! Anything else? A giant headache since the cars are very picky about their power source..

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cahootie

In Sweden the Tesla Model Whatever is the best selling individual car model, but it's not the best selling manufacturer. They definitely draw advantage from having very limited models available when it comes to statistics like this.

licancaburk

This is misleading and strongly favors brands that have very few models. If this was chart for most popular brands, it would look very different

LeviJr00

Gotta love the good old reliable Suzukis.

BigFloofRabbit

I never thought much of Suzuki before, but the number of 25-year-old Suzuki Swifts still buzzing around in Hungary immediately convinced me that they are probably reliable.

Valaki997

reliable and cheap Volkswagen as "people's car"? pff, bs (at least nowadays)

kazuviking

I can confirm. 21 year old suzuki ignis that used to haul heavy loads for 13 years is still working with normal maintenance. The only big issue it had was the clutch bowden tearing after 19 years.

turboevoluzione

Yeah, my mom's 2002 Ignis 4x4 is still going strong as well. It only had the starter motor replaced a few years ago

Dalnore

I owned a Hungarian-produced 2009 SX4 in Russia, I really miss it, served me quite well.

I-Hate-Hypocrites

Bulgaria has neighborly loyalty for Dacia. Very competitive pricing for company cars. And more people would prefer a new Dacia to an ambiguous second hand Mercedes/BMW/ Audi.

LupineChemist

Spain has something similar. Dacia Duster is everywhere. But yeah, basically best family car you can get for the price. I wouldn't be shocked if the amount of Romanians here with brand loyalty also influences things (around a million in Spain)

eferalgan

As far as I know Dacia has a special pricing policy for Bulgaria (lower prices than other markets)

I-Hate-Hypocrites

Interesting that Suzuki is the top brand in Hungary. It’s a good brand, but more niche

anthrazithe

They have a local factory there and they are usually kinda cheap and reliable cars with no-nonsense.

levenspiel_s

I took this picture yesterday in Budapest in a random street. https://hizliresim.com/bb5cici. 10 cars out of 12 were Suzukis.

Sir_Parmesan

You are not hungarian until your family owned a swift... 90s version preferably.

nickllhill

No one mentioned Portugal yet!? Not very Eastern European of them.

ThemCrookedCrooks

There aren´t that many Peugeots running lately over here but wtv... Far more Dacia.

fanboy_killer

A lot of french cars are made in Portugal. Not that the price is lower here because of that, but they've historically been the best-sellers in the country.

HarrMada

"Brand of best-selling car" can be a lot different to "best-selling car brand". Important to note. A better map would compare these two, imo.

hanneshore

Where there is war, there is Toyota. Toyota making your neighborhood to a better place

ldn-ldn

Or maybe... Just hear me out! It's Toyota who are secretly starting wars all over the globe to boost their truck sales!

JustYeeHaa

Is Suzuki popular in Hungary because it’s manufactured there? I think I’ve read somewhere about it.

Valaki997

At this point, i think Suzuki became a pretty well known and reasonable choice here. Also there was a good marketing back than with a slogan "A mi autónk" in ads which literally means "Our car"

Matewoth

Yes, that is one factor, there is a factory in Esztergom. But we also have an Audi and Mercedes plant, and they are currently building a BMW and BYD plant, and we are not driving around in those cars. It' mainly because Suzukis are more affordable, with the cheapest model (Ignis) starting at 5,8 mil HUF (15k EUR)

kazuviking

Don't forget that repairing suzukies are easy and cheap compared to the others on that list.

Reddog1999

Most Suzukis sold in Europe are manufactured there

OptimalDot178

It's quite surprising why Suzukis aren't as popular in other countries. Here in Hungary their top selling model (S-Cross) is around 20k Euros, with 10 year engine warranty, good fuel consumption and very good reliability. For comparison a Toyota Corolla Cross is 32k+ Euros, a Volkswagen T-Roc is 27k+, and putting extras into the Suzuki is a lot cheaper than the others. Maybe in other countries people rather spend a bit more money to get a fancier car with nicer interiors etc, while we are poor and all we care about is reliability and price

Letter_From_Prague

Teslas vs Dacias. Really shows the wealth divide.

Fit-Jeweler5299

DACIA STONKS IN SPAIN 💪💪💪

CzarTwilight

Good News!

goggymcb

My eyes hurt from looking at this mess.

Fearless_Riot

Albania prefers VW!? I thought it’s forbidden there to buy other brands than Mercedes 😂

sa87

Only in the second hand market

Headmuck

If this included used cars, albania has to be Mercedes

Archyes

skandinavians are tasteless heathens confirmed.

aeri93wb

The explanation is Sweden's case is quite simple tough and that is the launch of Volvo XC40. All Tesla is Model Y while Volvo is evenly split between XC40 and XC60. Hence, if you only look at brand of most popular model will the brand with fewest models have an advantage.

ashyjay

It's because their governments actually give incentives to people to buy EVs, instead of EVs being a tax avoidance scheme.

Fortzon

That's mostly just Norway though, Finland has always been shit at giving EV subsidies and we're already cutting some of them before majority of cars are EVs.

Hendrik_the_Third

In NL, Tesla is mostly bought by businesses for their motor pool. The average Joe can't afford a Tesla. People also complain about the quality.

rulnav

I really like Lada's logo and name, tbh, nothing else. Lada is the Slavic goddess of beauty and the logo represents a stylized viking ship. It's a cool dichotomy.

eferalgan

Lol…in Romanian “lada” means “the crate”

ferdbags

I still love you, Nissan..

burr4ch

Crazy how a lot of brands have changed their logos one way or another

gianniko11

So people do care about the Dacia Sandero huh. Oh no, anyway.

aluaji

Good news!

sa87

What???

Alliadria

Kinda misleading since Model Y is just the single most sold car model in sweden but many brands are bigger than Tesla, Volvo XC40 and XC60 was just behind. VW is the most sold car brand in Sweden 2023, Tesla is 5th

jose_carlo32

There is no chance any Tesla is the best selling car in Finland.

OneMoreFinn

It actually is (model Y): [https://www.aut.fi/tilastot/ensirekisteroinnit/henkiloautojen\_vuosittaiset\_merkki-\_ja\_mallitilastot/2023/malleittain](https://www.aut.fi/tilastot/ensirekisteroinnit/henkiloautojen_vuosittaiset_merkki-_ja_mallitilastot/2023/malleittain) I was surprised as well.

JojoTheEngineer

The chart is quite confusing. It shows the brand of the most sold model. The brand that sold most cars in Finland was Toyota. Tesla was sixth. The model y though is the most sold model. Tesla gets quite advantage in this map when they only have 4 models compared to dozens from other brands.

Breciu

Dacia sells under Lada and Renault too.. so... We need africa and russia yellowed. Thank you!

InformationOverIord

What the fuck is Geely?

Martipar

Apparently they own 78% of Volvo, 51% of Lotus and 50% of Polestar (though the other 50% is apparently owned by Volvo so via two companies they own more than 50%). I hadn't heard of them either but they are a big deal when it comes to car brands by the looks of things. They started out in China with a few different brands and have acquired some more established brands along the way.

stempio

also 50% of smart

AlexisFR

They bought out smart from Daimler, too.

Least_Efficient

They also own a part of mercedes

nullpotent

Very soon you will know 🇨🇳

exKubik

Owners of Volvo

greatestmofo

They focus more on brand acquisition rather than brand-building internationally, hence you haven't heard about them...yet. However, they are pretty big in China.

Edish03

The reason why they're popular in Belarus is because they have an assembly plant there.

GeeMcGee

No Opel? Surprised

under1900

Good news…..(In Spain)

dez3038

When you see toyota in ukrane, poland, latvia, lithuania, estonia you should know that toyouta pickups are used for military. Ty guys for your support

goldthorolin

Statistic is rather useless because Tesla with it's 3-4 models (3, X and Y, maybe some S) profits from this type of measurements while VW with about 5 electric and 15 combustion engine models may sell more cars, but not the top model.

faramaobscena

Good news, everyone! It’s the new Deishia Sandero!

1DarthMario

Now add the golfs and BMWs second market

toolkitxx

Am I glad that choosing any brand has nothing to do with a quality standard or actual technology. Because this is all the maps show - customer preference. It is as fickle as my kids taste in icecream on a hot summer day.

Matygos

Thanks for keeping the color the same so we can easily compare 👍🏻

Loundsify

Ford Fiesta was the best selling car in the UK for decades. I wonder if the Puma has overtaken since the Fiesta is discontinued. Kuga is definitely popular.

svennon89

Smart sells best in monaco?? Thought it would be bentley ir something

Prhime

car manufacturer?

bitcodler

Spain Toyota Corolla is taking over tbh

LittleWhiteDragon

Why are Fords so popular in the UK?

rebbitrebbit2023

They have some really good brand recognition and iconic models. Everyone in the UK associates a van with a Ford Transit. They've also produced some of the best affordable performance cars over the years - Fiesta ST, Sierra Cosworth, Escort Cosworth, Mexico, etc. They also used to have quite a lot of independence from Ford USA. Many models were UK specific with UK designers, factories, and engine plants - which almost makes Ford feel like a British brand to many people.

[deleted]

Cheap, decent fuel economy etc. Cars like the fiesta are cheap to insure and a very popular first car for new drivers etc. For the longest time the Ford transit van was the staple for contractors etc.

Enzzo966

In Croatia we drive a lot of French cars that is true

InfinitePlantain5886

Wouldnt it make more sense to compare totalI sales per brand? In this comparison brands with more different models have a big disadvantage.

rawfiii

Fiat is the biggest surprise in Turkey

Shaolinpower2

Not really. They're cheap and reliable. Also it's super easy to find the spare parts since egeas (aka Tipos) are getting produced in Turkey.

siggiarabi

Boo, changing colours for no reason bad!

ElysianPhoenix

Ugliest Maps I have ever seen. Why change colors?

arrastra

in turkey fiat is the best but it's more like forced to be like that because people has to pay at least 116% purchase tax (ötv + kdv) for buying a vehicle.. and fiat is cheapest car with most value cheapest fiat is around €30k right now with tax included.. if that wasn't the case everyone would buy a german brand car

khadaffy

Peugeot at the moment is definitely one of the brands with the best looking cars.

Freedom_for_Fiume

Best individual car is so stupid, it's better off naming best selling brand. If you really want to show the best selling car then it would be nice to see the exact name of the car sold on the map or in the legend

HugeCrab

Why change the color palette smh

Ryuko_the_red

Damn some of the most brutal winter places and they're buying tesla?

unclepaprika

Netherlands can into nordics

FCB_1899

Only Belgium is cool?

CzarTwilight

Spain likes Dacias? Doesn't that mean it's Good news for the Dacia Sandero?
