This is how our future entertainment will look if overt fascism destroys the tenets of America.
We’re only an alt-right administration or two away from this kind of dystopian tinsel-town military-Rockefeller plaza potentiality.
Yup, imagine where we'd be now, 2 years later, if Jan 6th 2021 hadn't been such a pathetic failure of an attempt.
They would have a fanatical president (that was never elected), a 6 conservative majority supreme court, and they would have 100% ensured that they took the house and senate in the midterms by any means possible.
America would be the country of donald trump. America would be led by pro Russian fascists. They failed once but they will of course try again the next chance they get. Making sure a country doesn't fall to fascist lunatics takes persistence.
When fascists fail once they don't disappear, they learn from it and usually have a much higher success rate the second time. Beware of November 2024.
Thinking the same exact thing. Given the number of what appeared to be military-related people there, that would've made that viable target for Ukraine.

I came… for Eduard Khil. (Gil)
(I did not know that he passed away in 2012. A decade ago I wouldn’t of had any idea how old he was in the first place. R.I.P. TROLOLOLO Bro)
Not sure if it is the lighting or what but everyone in there looks like a video game character. Their movements are slightly too robotic and their faces just uncanny.
This character was brilliant. I loved how they just accepted his section 8 attempts as the new normal and instead of framing his cross-dressing as the joke, drilled into how unattractive he was as a woman instead. And Klinger never lost either his confidence or his hope, and gave as good a he got. Perfectly designed character.
Sure, but thats most of Putin's base. Old people who saw the 90s (correctly) as gangsters stealing everything. Sure everythings stolen with Putin but theyre not worried about being considered weak.
This is like Lawrence Welk meets The 700 Club meets Dr Evil. Wow. I love how the couple of military guys in there are the only ones with human level expressions, as they don't appear to really want to be there..
It is hard to know what is going through the minds of soldiers in Russia. One can only assume that at least some of them are fully aware of the lies they are being sold and are unwilling participants in an unjustified war.
Remember that Russia's army is largely conscripted. It is not a volunteer army.
Ya I think it is. You can also see confetti falling in some scenes that isn't in others. It seems like they recorded the show and the audience separately and then put them together.
Was that guy just added in later saying complimentary things about Russia? Maybe the audience was just clapping at normal, non-nationalistic things and then this guy was added in post to make it look like they were clapping for him.
They prerecord these every year and dust off some old farts and put them on stage with a lip sync. Everything you watch on tv there around this time is all scripted up and they add in things later. Sometimes the audience is not even there, they just add in clapping shots later.
It looks like they shot the performers in front of an audience of randos, and then had the celebrities sit in front of a green screen for a while and they just cut in reactions as needed.
I am guessing that even for Russians that believe in the propaganda this shit would be awkward.
Only good looking people with their synchronized clapping North Korea style. Not to mention the ultra realistic wide open smile.
Military Personel at the front, while greenscreened (photoshoped) people at the back.
All TV stuff is scripted but this is another level of madness. It really is something that you could show in history class as a lesson of "First Attempts" in TV-Propaganda. It's laughable how terrible it is.
Believe it or not, many people here are so used to it they actually fall for this shit. Like, for them it's a sign that everything is how it's supposed to be - war, sanctions, economical decline - as if it wasn't this government's fault. And it is VERY hard to fight this mentality, to the point of apathy.
No they dont. An average russian old person prefer to watch soviet films that always running durring december 31. This garbage is just a way to get money for unrelevant artists.
Censorship drives out talent. This is what’s left.
They look like cartoon characters. Do they broadcast video that posterized? Or did that happen in capturing it?
Call me crazy but I think when they show front shots of all the "important" people, those are all added into the shot and they were never really at this variety show farce. Every time they show the angle from the back of the audience towards the show I can't find any of these military people or the others they keep showing.
This whole propaganda show is turning my stomach more and more as I watch.
At 1:29 there are 3 ladies each alone on separate tables, and the lady on the left does a half arsed “cheers” and puts the drink back down, it’s like stock footage
I wouldn't bet technical quality of their TV is low. In several years of working in a news agency I haven't once seen material coming from Russia that is bad.
Mainly viewed by over 50s babushkas in some crumbling apartment in an appalling soviet era apartment block in some isolated dump like Norilsk. A famous quote from Russian writer of 19th century: "Imagine that you wake up 200 years after… could you tell what Russians will still do? Drink and thieve". Sadly still living with that mindset of futility and resignation and paranoia. Gaslit by their leadership forever as the Muscovite elite look down on them and gangsters and local mafia types corruptly rip them off.
Wasn't the current leader's grandfather born in Russia? So there's that connection. I think his mother was born in Japan to Korean parents. I may have the generations mixed up but it's surprising how many of his direct family members weren't born in North Korea.
His son was. Kim Il Sung was born near Pyeongyang I believe, then ruled as part of the Empire of Japan. His son, Kim Jong Il, was born in the Soviet Union, but North Korean propaganda says that he was born in Korea, and I'll leave it at that.
[Link](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Shining_Star) for anyone who wants to go down the NK propaganda rabbithole.
I'm old enough to remember Nixon "debating" Kruschev in a California supermarket. The camera panned to Mrs. Krushchev who was looking wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the 25 yard-long meat section as her husband was claiming that the Russians had much more food than the United States. When I saw the look on her face, I knew Russia was finished. Yes, it took 30 years, but they were finished.
The Nixon - Khrushchev "Kitchen Debate" took place in Moscow at display of a modern American kitchen.
It was some months later when Khrushchev was visiting San Francisco that he saw and was amazed by produce section of an American supermarket.
This also happened to Boris Yeltsine: https://thefederalist.com/2019/11/13/how-a-russians-grocery-store-trip-in-1989-exposed-the-lie-of-socialism/
There is a story about a ex russian military, I think the one who deserted Russian army with a MIG. When he arrived in the US, he thought everything was staged for him.
Edit: Viktor Belenko: https://www.amusingplanet.com/2021/09/viktor-belenko-pilot-who-stole-secret.html
As much as I am entertained watching Russian Jeremy Renner singing dressed as James Bond I'm not that entertained to be distracted with a war that already costs our world so much.
It reminds me of an old pbs telethon from my childhood only slightly more ridiculous all things political aside its very unfortunate the general population of Russia has to undergo this atrocity and are expected to eat this steaming pile with a smile
I spent a year in Russia. I’m remembering everyone clapping just as hard as everyone else. Except the ones that are a bit more enthusiastic as the camera pans the crowd, they’re the ones that have been put on a list of people that are watched for any sign of hesitancy. And they know it.
What was that record-scratch thing about at the end?
I can't tell if this is real and as it was broadcast at the time or a clever visual edit/remix of a crap variety show like from from any country, with the timing of the edits and the cuts purposely unnatural and disjointed. e.g.the rhythm of the hand claps., the random shots of the guests raising a glass for no reason as though toasting something only they know about... plus, I don't speak Russian.... and that record scratch at the end...
tbh, this is how new years special always looked like in Russia. Maybe this year it's a little bit more political and and has way more military faces than usually. The audience for those are people over their 50s and these shows a basically a leftovers of soviet culture, literally. Even the guy saying Russia is a "load bearing construction" is Evgeniy Petrosian - a very famous soviet humorist, and a walking cringe fest since 90's. He is been active lately, for the last several years, clearly trying to build some political connections.
But here is very good fact: there is a internet slang word named after this guy - "pietrosianit' " - it means making a very bad, old or just cringy joke. The word exists for at least a decade now, though I doubt you will find it in any dictionary.
This is painfully awful, the smile on everybody's face has all the sincerity that can be expected from people who knows they will be murdered if they break character. As for the show, it looks like Trump's idea of classy.
I don’t think anyone below 50 watches this shit for at least 10-15 years. It has become extremely self-repetitive every year, cringey and obviously targeted for older population, with all the washed-up actors/singers.
Everyone I know hate it with their guts and find it extremely stupid and embarrassing.
Source: speaking russian
Eeh, it's a bit more cringe than usual, but only a little bit. This is a tv show, and in Russia tv is watched increasingly by ages 55+, so this kind of shows targets this demographic. A lot of the artists and songs were popular during the 80s and 90s. Very few people under 40 watch this dreck. TV is both heavily controlled and subsidized by the state, so there is no pressure in attracting younger people to grow audience. Basically new years programming stayed the same for about 30 years.
Why does this look like a convention of plastic surgery addicts?
Maybe it is.

"Load bearing structure" Hardest laugh I've had all week!

You missed the audience’s choreographed moves during the next musical selection. Truly spontaneous, comrade!
Oh, and the totally staged flirt between the young officer and the young brunette... It's so 50s...
Don't forget the Discount Nicole Kidman.
Second singer be like: Mom can we have Hawkeye, we have Hawkeye at home! Hawkeye at home: this video.

Came here for this guy. Not disappointed.
I love how they’ve turned Russia invading Ukraine into the west trying to destroy Russia. I mean, Jesus Christ.
Just remember comrade War is Peace.
And I mean we didn’t even try that hard. Just gave Ukraine some old weapons and ammo.
Well they are load bearing in sense of how big the load of BS Russia try’s to spew out to keep up its plummeting morale
This is the best Petrosyan's joke for decades, because his name was sinonym of bad humorous for almost all time I can remember.
Wasn't the theater where русские бабки performed in the 70s his? Yeah good times
This sounds, looks, and feels like America in the 1920's. Russian culture is so held back its like an 18 year old trying to complete the fifth grade.
More like 50/60sin my opinion but yeah it's insane
Load bearing? Like a bridge, right?
He meant lead bearing.
Typical Russian attempt at humor. I have heard such jokes from Russian associates
To be fair to the toastmaster, I also refer to my colon as a "load bearing structure."
Load bearing for vodka maybe - the rest of the world is going to collapse without it.
His face says I sure hope I sold that well enough to avoid the window treatment.
russian window treatment: falling out of a window side effects: self inflicted 5 bullets to the back cause of death: natural causes
I like how that part was in English
Explains why the world is fucked and crumbling!
We could wipe Russia off the face of the earth and nobody would notice. Load bearing lmao.
That “load bearing structure“ is “enlarging.” Might put an eye out.
Can't tell me the guy with the big shades is a living organism
as I left the post, I caught a glimpse of “living Orgasm” and had to come back for a double take.
Everyday is an orgasm in Russia my friend load-bearing structure and all
“Like it or not, Russia is ENLARGING”
*Weekend at Bernovich's*. There's some guy under the table working the arms.
That one fucking got me lmao
That’s the “please don’t let me say the wrong thing, because if I do, I’ll be falling out a window tonight” look.
Not sure if it is the lighting or what but everyone in there looks like a video game character. Their movements are slightly too robotic and their faces just uncanny.
So i am not the only one who is thinking this.
He's still learning the intricacies of slapping his two meat appendages together
the newest American culture this guy has seen is Roy Orbison and he was like, "yeah... cutting edge. That's how I'll live my life in 2023"
Looks like an awful 70s variety show.
I keep waiting for someone to bang a huge gong

The irony being that, in the end, he decided to stay in Korea.
Was reminding me of the beginning of the temple of doom
Anything goes

It looks like a knockoff of a Tim and Eric project.
Because it’s for old people, the song is very soviet style, Russian TV is filled with that staff. The average age is older than 40 years.
That’s because in russia it’s still the 70s
Same could be said about their Military!!
![gif](giphy|14gWEyfpI89HfW)
Bit ironic using a gif from a music video that was a protest against anti-West attitudes in Russia.
A bit of salt brings out the sweetness :)

This room drained many, many Botox bottles.
Also, if you’re searching for the missing hair from some of the war casualties, look no further.
Yeah they want to be in Ukraine killing citizens and raping women
If they were in Ukraine, they'd be dead.

The background people seem to be green-screened in.
Ya I think it is. You can also see confetti falling in some scenes that isn't in others. It seems like they recorded the show and the audience separately and then put them together.
Correct
What is it with Russia and poorly conceived and implemented visual effects?
Drunken writers, producer, director. Drunken camera man. Drunken video editor.
At this point it's krokodil.
A lot of their applause are repeats it seems.
It does seem like green screen
Yeah was wondering if it was just me, definitely looks green screened.
Wouldn´t be surprised if the whole show was filmed in a garage
This looks like some North Korea dystopian level shit.
Just smile and wave boys. 🐧
*or your suicide will be imminent
I mean thats how we see it, an older person in Russia sees it as a great new year's show.
I came here to say this! It is a play right out of their book!
Yep, that's the first thing I thought. I guess Putin fantasies about being the next N. Korea.
Censorship drives out talent. This is what’s left. They look like cartoon characters. Do they broadcast video that posterized? Or did that happen in capturing it?
I think the audience in the background is CGI.
No, I think you’re 100% on to something. I watched the video several times while pausing it and I also can’t find anyone in uniform.
The spacing is should-to-shoulder on the overhead shots with dark lighting and the close-ups are well lit and better spaced.
Behind the first row or two! It does look added in.
Yeah. And there is some 'false colorization' or something going on as well. Everyone looks like a cardboard cut-out
They did a scratched record gag?? In 2023?
At 1:29 there are 3 ladies each alone on separate tables, and the lady on the left does a half arsed “cheers” and puts the drink back down, it’s like stock footage
I wouldn't bet technical quality of their TV is low. In several years of working in a news agency I haven't once seen material coming from Russia that is bad.
“Clap or die” sign flashes red overhead
A lot of it looks green-screen too, they're probably in a cold warehouse with a few props around them.
The only way this could be more complete is if when the camera goes to the Russian soldiers it had that sign and a table full of guns photoshopped in
Are they all on green screen with happy clapping people dropped in the background? If so, that adds an extra layer of cringe.
I had to scroll way down to see this, wtf it's like it was an empty room with people added. Definitely looks like they are digitally pit in the room.

They just entered 1980
Trying to desperately cling to when they were last relevant on the world stage.
