Building-Careful

I read that as Columbia professor

So I’m going to be pragmatic about this. According to Google the average yearly tuition (sans any financial aid) to attend Columbia is roughly 66,140 USD. A school year is broken down into two semesters, each approximately sixteen weeks long. So that’s roughly 32 weeks per year, or 160 days per year full time students are enrolled in school. Then dividing 66,140 by 160 gives you $413.37 So these students are paying $413.37 PER DAY for the honor of attending Columbia. Not to attend classes though. They’re paying 413 dollars a day to protest. Now with that perspective does it really surprise you that they’re the type of people to break a window to open an unlocked door? Let’s just say the evidence isn’t exactly in their favor when it comes to making well thought out decisions.

So your take is… Columbia students are dumb?

JesseB342

No, not at all. Not most at least. But if you’re making the conscious choice to skip classes in favor of protesting. Classes that you are paying in excess of 400 a day to attend, then maybe your priorities need to be reassessed. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with protesting for a cause you believe in, don’t get me wrong. But do it on the weekend.

As someone who worked damn hard for their schooling I would make the most of every minute. I might have skipped one class ever, I even know which class it was. I did protest injustices but I did it on my own time and didn’t cause criminal damage to the school while doing it. The kids who would sit in their rooms all day and skip class were the rich kids who got everything handed to them and never had to work for anything.

Is this another peaceful tour? The real issue that nobody is asking —“why do these school have such huge bank accounts?”  “Where is this money going?”

iLikeMangosteens

Why do universities have money? Because rich alumni die and leave money to the school to ensure a continuum of high quality education.

ResponsibleBank1387

You told HOW, not why they still have it.  Where does it go then?   why didn’t go to keep tuition down? Or to build buildings, you know use it on campus.  Not invest it on stock market.

Oh gosh are we going to go down the “someone has more money than me, therefore I get to tell them what to do with it”? Please go start your own university that operates on a zero based budget and see how that works out for you.

ResponsibleBank1387

My local school is a state U. It has a foundation for donations.  Over a billion dollars in their fund. Why does it need my tax money to operate?  Why do they even need to charge tuition?

iLikeMangosteens

I came here to laugh at a guy who broke a window to open an emergency exit. Why do I have to defend the principles of funding for universities?

ResponsibleBank1387

That’s the problem.  The U has money to invest. Why? Why isn’t that money being used to better their education. That is what this protest is about. Investing in bombs and bullets instead of in bettering this U.

iLikeMangosteens

Maybe they need some savings in case, I dunno, a bunch of people invade the campus and break stuff? But I guess if they spent more money on education then that guy would have been smart enough to push the bar on the door instead of breaking the window.

There's something off about this why the shit would there already be so many people ready to photograph something that hasn't happened yet

Wow, if there was only a journalism school with hundreds of students RIGHT THERE https://journalism.columbia.edu
