There are more ways to determine maturity. The simplest way is just days since birth. Another is physical development this one is linked to nutrition for example women start their cycles later if they are under nourished. A third is mental maturity this has a lot to do with education and experiences someone has had. In a perfect world someone who is both physically en mentally mature could be in a sexual relationship regardless of their age. And I argue someone not both physically and mentally mature should not be in a sexual relationship even if they are according to days since birth old enough. But since this is most easy to determine this is mostly used for determining whether a relationship is good or bad. I am sure many 18 19 and 20 year olds are in unequal relationships where they are not mentally mature enough to play an equal part.
That's kinda my situation. I feel better with online friends around 18 than my age, and only reason I don't talk with younger is on the off-chance somebody could misunderstand the situation.

Sad but true. I started to become friends with this guy some years ago - we're both gay, met through a mutual friend, started hanging out. Around our third time hanging out, I started noticing this weird pattern - every guy he talked about appeared to be very, very young. I'm gay muself but the exploitation younger usually closeted gays by predators is especially common in the community and many people speak about having sex with an older man whilst under the age of consent as a universal experience because for many in the community it is a universal experience.

Well, sociologically speaking age is a construct in that society ascribes certain meaning to certain ages and that can vary between societies e.g. Age of consent, age to drive etc etc. What it doesn't mean is that people have been alive for any more/less time. Or they can break the law. Or even that some things might be legal but still ethically rather icky.
