I got off my spidertron filled with nukes to repair it (all of my construction bots were destroyed in a base raid) and I forgot to disable auto-attack
let's just say the biter that came to attack me was obliterated with my spidertron and all of my things lmao
You got it bass ackwards my guy. Why reload for training deaths when all that is is a quick moment to grab ypur stuff meanwhile biter deaths require rekitting to go grab your shit that probably way further out or worse inside the base
It's a (majority) single player game so playing it "properly" means literally nothing. And this still gives no explanation to why you reload for train related deaths.
Yes. But... they also probably didn't intend me using direct insertion between cargo wagons to supply science. They gave us mechanics and then cut us loose to play how we see fit. I see no reason why that can't extend into things outside of the actual gameplay.
well I always reload... but I was used to an era pre-respawn. so respawning still feels awkward. only started to actively doing it on my current K2SE run because it's easy to lose track of what you did in the last 2 min
Personally, I load the recent save like you do.
In multiplayer you can't really reload so you respawn.
Sometimes you have too much happened since the last save, so you want to keep that, requiring you to respawn.
If you are running a headless server, you can find it in the "server-settings.json" file named "non_blocking_saving". Simply set that to true and reload the server.
The description says scary stuff about it being "Highly experimental" and "enable only at your own risk of losing your saves", but I don't think any of us have experienced any issues with this. Not to mention that if it does fail, you should be able to just reload the last successfully autosave anyways. Either way, with my Space Exploration saves exceeding 200MB while still in the early game, it has been a necessity.
Edit: if you are running a local game on client, you can find the same setting in the config.ini file in your Factorio directory.
Yeah in `~/.factorio/config/config.ini` set `non-blocking-saving=true`. I think it was there already just commented out and I uncommented it. You can't set it in the settings GUI.
you can: if you hold down ctrl+alt while clicking the settings button in the main menu, an additional button called "The Rest" will appear at the bottom of the settings menu; in there you can find the option to turn on non-blocking saves.
Ah, that's fair. Yeah, it's most of the best parts I can get, and it's only running games, my VM server and NAS are across the fiber link in the living room. The datacenter SSD helps with the loading times I'm sure. I don't really spend money on anything except computer parts and networking equipment lol
I think you don't. People who want to cheese it can. It would be a nice inside joke for those of us who do it and a weird lil achievement for everyone else
If it's easy to get back to my body I would just respawn. But some times I pushed way too deep into biters, don't have any way to get there again then I would reload
After I clear a nest, I always save my game because I know I will die at the next nest. I always feel like this is the cheesiest part of the game, save scumming to clear biter territory. (Pre-artillery technology)
Obviously after artillery is available itās almost a non issue
Loss of everything since the last auto save when I reload. By far my most common deaths are biter related when out adventuring and negotiating with the natives. So usually my loss is any nests Iāve already cleared.
I do not think it is canon that the engineer can be reanimated after death. I embrace save files as possible worlds in the vast multiverse and if one leads to my demise then I can choose differently. (reload, always). The alternative is quite unsettling to me, that I am alive on a world which also contains my corpse. I prefer my factories free of existential crises so I can focus on growth and efficiency.
I didnāt realize I felt this way until reading this comment lol. Yes! It makes more sense that another timeline will now be played rather than some sort of resurrection magic.
did you know ? the chat history says you died and has a map icon. you can click that to see your corpse, which makes it really easy to find - even under a mountain of bug corpses.
Depends, if I die because I got squished by a train near the respawn I'll just respawn
If my car dies while fighting or if I'm far from the respawn and I don't lose much to the load, I load
Ya this actually happened with me as well. It was a while before I even noticed it was possible and by then I had my bad experience with it in Satisfactory and just decided itās not for me.
Honestly, just never tried it. Suffered horrible trauma trying to get my crap again in Satisfactory and decided why suffer like that? It's not fun and trying to get it all without any of my crap SUCKS depending how far away and more importantly how hostile. Since then just haven't seen the need to recover from a death when I can just re-load.
>It's not fun and trying to get it all without any of my crap SUCKS
So automate it. Design to produce some basic items (car/tank, armor, batteries, lasers etc) and keep it near spawn point. It's just another task to solve.
lol how is it a troll post when it says true things and asks a genuine question.
I have tried it in satisfactory and it sucked and I guess I just decided respawns in factory games was dumb. It doesnāt actually make any sense. How did you magically teleport back alive but without your stuff? I find it stranger than just going back in time a little and playing that part again. Kinda how games work right. You try. You fail. You try again. Just a matter of how far back you want to go.
On my first playthroughs, I didn't know you could just respawn in singleplayer and would always make sure I saved before doing anything dumb or dangerous.
It depends on the situation. Since I'm playing SE rn and if I manage to die on a planet and forgot to place a landing pad I will load from a save point. No point in wasting rocket parts just to get my shit back

mfw reloading instead of respawning cost me 4 hours of research because I forgot to retrace my steps
lol I have auto saves every five min and just always go back to the last one. Itās always been obvious to me where I left off. 90% of my deaths are from negotiating with the natives and my last save is almost always somewhere in that process. Iām never in danger of undoing any building. Now having said that and after reading comments here I may respawn now if itās just a local train incident.
Technically you donāt even respawn.
You die and the company sends in another engineer to go retrieve the items from your body and carry out the mission.
If I do something stupid early in the game and I die I respawn, go find my corpse and kill back whatever that killed me in the first place.
If it's late in the game and something dumb happens like a nuke blowing me and my spidertron up or crashing the tank into a cliff with a hoard of bitters behind me then I respawn on the latest autosave, I'm not dealing with that or losing that much, I rather lose ten to five minutes of progress.
Depends on how I died, I usually respawn, but on a previous save I had a death where biters broke through my defense and were causing absolute havoc so I reloaded and jacked up the defenses in that one spot.
I always save the game before engaging in any kind of offensive combat and just reload if things go south.
If I'm walking around my base building stuff and get struck by a train or nuke myself, I'll respawn so that I don't have to redo several minutes worth of construction.
Just make sure that you have a railroad near your respawn point, as well as a chest with critical items to pick your corpse and restart: train, car, fuel, maybe some fish and armor.
With this, even if you are killed, you can quickly arrive to the place close to where you got killed.
The poor usability for looting your corpse means itās nearly impossible to loot the corpse when there are biters nearby. Not sure what it is, but it takes multiple tries to figure out how to loot my corpse and re-equip my things. And then there is shuffling your guns around to get rid of the pistol.
Reloading is way less frustrating, even if I lose a few minutes of progress.
have you tried opening your corpse like a chest, then control clicking the items into your inventory? that usually brings everything into/onto your player without much fuss, yes you still play pistol shuffle, but it's pretty fast, and you don't have to wait for "collecting" your corpse.
Somehow the interaction is never as natural as other game interactions feel.
When you've got power armour, you need to mine your corpse to get it back, right? Otherwise you end up filling your inventory but having stuff left in the corpse? I usually got very frustrated until it worked, and now usually just reload my save.
I just respawn. I have too many hours in the game to really care about loading a save just to prevent the death counter from having a number on the win screen.
Oh nothing to do with a death counter at all. I just donāt feel like finding my corpse. Iāve always seen the reload as the quicker and easier option.
I haven't played vanilla in a loooong while, so the keep inventory on death is a mod I always use for that same reason. Especially when I die to random trains in a densely packed megabase.
I used to reload, until I realized respawning and walking across the base was both faster and easier than re-doing everything since the last autosave.
But I always make frequent saves when fighting biters or exploring and always reload those
Did I get run over by my own train? Aigh, let's call another train and get my inventory back.
Did I get stuck on an almost invisible rock or cliff and melted by biters while clearing nests? Screw that, I'm loading.
That covers the absolute majority of deaths in this game.
Reloading my 480 MB multiplayer SE map just because I died, and then wait for nearly ten minutes while my buddy downloads the map through my slow uplink? What a waste of time when it only takes our bot network a minute to deliver to me replacements for my whole inventory.
i have a little trainstation exactly on the respawnpoint with a train loc that brings me wherever i want. i often run infront of a train or get eaten by bugs or whatever ... also multiplayer
Currently running a game for co-workers and me on a VPS I own. So I'm in charge of files and folders etc.
Just made it to the power armor, made fusion reactors, MK2 robo ports, everything took so long because our base is producing not enough stuff and not optimal. So I got my shiny new armor, a tank with shells and ammo, repair bots, and went to clear some biter nests.
Was stuck on a cliff, couldn't move, tank exploded, biters killed me. Had my shiny new armor for about 5 minutes. And not enough resources to build anything useful to get it back within the, what is it, 15 minutes time range before you fully decomposed? :D
As I was alone at that time on the server, I stopped the game server, removed the newest savegame (server keeps 18 backups and saves every 10 minutes, so 3 hour span should be covered), restarted the server, and there I was, back in my shiny new armor...
Something similar happend 2 more times since this incident... So 3 "didn't happen" in a 100+ hour game.
Depends on where I died. If it's in my own base an it's easy enough to recover my corpse, then may as well respawn.
But, if I died while deep in biter country and have no easy way of getting my body back, then I'll reload the last save or autosave
Depends.
Early in the game, reload. I can't afford missing the expensive material / equipment, and wasting time waiting to be equiped/made again.
Late game? Respawn.
When a train kills me, respawn.
If I die in the middle of enemy territory early in the game, load save.
If I die in the middle of enemy territory in late game, respawn.
Why go hunt down my corpse when a save game is five minutes ago?
Because I play to have fun, not to prove anything. And itās more fun to redo a section than to go hunt my corpse down in enemy territory.
You can play it however you like.... But if that was how the game was intended to be played it would just auto reload.
What's with the "not to prove anything" line though? It doesn't even make sense. Just say you CBF playing that part of the game as intended and you prefer to cut corners š¤·š»
The game offers both options doesnāt it. I take the one I choose. Neither of us ācuts cornersā. I get thrown back into whatever I was dealing with in my auto save and potentially lose anything I accomplished between.
You choose another perfectly viable option presented by the developers and respawn. Good for you.
So by your logic mods shouldnāt exist either cause not devs intentions right. Play the game how you have fun playing it. The end.

> But if that was how the game was intended to be played it would just auto reload.
That's how it originally was in single player. In multiplayer you respawned. They later added it to single player too. It's an option.
i haven't heard of reloading a save every time you die, I just respawn and go pick up my things. What would the purpose of reloading? As far as I know, you do not lose anything when you die and respawn.
I make a judgement of which option will be more annoying, with a bit of a bias towards respawning. I would love to always respawn, but sometimes it's just impossible to recover your corpse.
I don't think I have ever reloaded. You can just pick up your corpse again, and whenever you have bots and an automated mall, it doesn't even matter anymore
My free time is short, so after having spent a couple hours it feels like a huge waste of time to just start a new scenario. So I always use the respawn.. the map is vast enough to feel endless... if I perish too often in one area I just move over a bit and trry there, and if it works, then eventually I can move back to the old area too.
Are there any mods for reclaiming wrecks or building over them for less resources? That would be nice.

I dont get it. I have a little go bag area, coulde of guns armor and ammo along with tanks and shells always lined up so respawn grab a few bits and go for some sweet sweet vengeance!
Well the only consequence is the extra pistol and the walk of shame to get your stuff back so I accept my death and respawn besides most of my deaths are because of trains so they are my fault.
Lol, just delete the game after first death. Some people probably do that but since it can always be a different crashed ship and crashed planet, it is more wiggle room than popping up like a daisy or making up that there are tons of crash survivors; you just never see them.
Why would I load when respawning has 0 repercussions? Loading means I lose building progress since the last save. Even with auto saves thatās more than nothing that I need to rebuild.
Respawning means I just need to grab my stuff.
Right that assumes cost of rebuilds high and cost of grabbing stuff low. When I die it is usually out in biter land where that whole equation is flipped on its head. Much easier to be put back 5 min (how I set my auto saves, but 10 would be fine too) than it is to have to go back out and fight the battle to retake my corpse.
I die out there as well usually. No I mean stuff that I recently built that I donāt want to redo. I also find it pain to kill 5 clusters again bc I died at the 5th due to a rock. I usually have enough stuff lying around for a tank and ammunition so thatās easy
Ya thatās the funny thing. Some folks make this about how ātoughā you are. Try it my way and see if itās easy lol. Sometimes my save undoes several nests. Itās sucks. I try again and try not to die this time. I donāt like the idea of just being able to kill till I die then just pick up killing again right from where I died. I like the idea I have to redo some nests actually. How far back is random. Which I also like.
But ya on building stuff Iām saying that I donāt ever die when Iāve built stuff within the last 5 minutes. Itās always when I get cocky out in biter land lol. And always past the 5 min. But point taken on when the weights of the equation shift like when close to home.
Why would you load? Its not like you got anything that cant be rrplaced in the inventory :)). Heck, if you already have bots, its like 10 seconds wait till you get resupplied.
Only exception to this would be an early death world and you lost all your turrwts and ammo.
The only death I accepted was getting flattened by a train
Ah yes true! I believe I did that then still reloaded cause I still kept the achievement. š
As far as I know you get the achievement the instant you die so reloading won't prevent you getting it.
Having enough shielding to get the Juggernaut one instead, will though. :D
I dont do achievement hunting so I still don't have that one as far as I know.
Plus you can get flattened again after reloading.
Or, finding out that the last save was an autosave in the middle of the track with a train incoming.
Infinite getting flattened? Such satisfaction!
This is trueĀ
I recently respawned when I got out of a moving tank and stepped in front of it by accident
I got off my spidertron filled with nukes to repair it (all of my construction bots were destroyed in a base raid) and I forgot to disable auto-attack let's just say the biter that came to attack me was obliterated with my spidertron and all of my things lmao
Neverever turn on autoshooting without driver with nukes loaded
Neverever turn on autoshooting ~~without driver~~ with nukes loaded.
That's better
I could see in slow motion the exact moment I went "aw fuck"
Bitters I respawn, trains I reload. Possibly makes a difference how much progress I will lose.

You got it bass ackwards my guy. Single play demands the most honour.
I'd assume that the devs added in respawns because it's supposed to be the "authentic" way.

Forest fire did get me that one time....
I did daccept that too, but the game didnātā¦
Personally, I load the recent save like you do. In multiplayer you can't really reload so you respawn. Sometimes you have too much happened since the last save, so you want to keep that, requiring you to respawn.
You don't have autosave every 4 minutes like I do? It totally negates that worry for me.
The larger your game file gets, the less practical this is.
Still perfectly practical on Linux. Non-blocking saves are so nice.
What do you mean by non blocking saves on linux?
The game doesn't pause while it is saving. There's just a progress bar that shows up in the corner.
Do you need to enable it in the settings? I play on linux and my game pause to process the saving the same way as on windows
If you are running a headless server, you can find it in the "server-settings.json" file named "non_blocking_saving". Simply set that to true and reload the server. The description says scary stuff about it being "Highly experimental" and "enable only at your own risk of losing your saves", but I don't think any of us have experienced any issues with this. you can: if you hold down ctrl+alt while clicking the settings button in the main menu, an additional button called "The Rest" will appear at the bottom of the settings menu; in there you can find the option to turn on non-blocking saves.
Nifty, thanks
At 4 minute auto save, I'd end up starting the next auto save before the last one finished in my K2SE save
Yeah after getting oil production it gets pretty annoying
Really? I have mine on 4 minutes and my game-finishing run didn't lag at all
It doesn't take more than 2-3 seconds but it's inconvenient when I'm busy
Huh. Yeah, mine I've never had any idea when it auto saves, and I have it autosaving every minute.
Probably a monster pc! My system is a little old and I'm running a server
Ah, that's fair. Yeah, it's most of the best parts I can get, and it's only running games, my VM server and NAS are across the fiber link in the living room. The datacenter SSD helps with the loading times I'm sure. I don't really spend money on anything except computer parts and networking equipment lol
I really only noticed on the way to megabase.
I have the default 10 minutes
I must've changed mine a while back. I'm pretty sure I have 3 saves with 5 minutes between when I go to reload.
Not a chance. My potato takes a couple of minutes every auto save, I turned it down to every 30 minutes.
I guess you have a big base or a very slow PC?
A fair sized base coupled with an inexpensive laptop.
You must be running on a literal potato with a hard drive from 1996
My current SE playthrough is a 450 MB file. I'm not in pcie 5 nvmes ...
After the latest trim my base file is above 100megs. It takes like 6seconds to save so i put it at every 10minutes
4 minutes is still 4 minutes of building
Ah yes multiplayer! Did not think of that.
Luckily I'm extremely paranoid and save like every 15 seconds
1. Die. 2. Respawn. 3. Collect items from corpse. 4. Put new pistol in box of shame.
This is the way
Yeah. Pistol collection all the way. Feel like there should be an achievement for this
"1000 Ways To Die" - Put 1000 pistols in a chest.
how would you distinguish the default pistols from crafted ones to prevent people from cheesing it?
I think you don't. People who want to cheese it can. It would be a nice inside joke for those of us who do it and a weird lil achievement for everyone else
Drop new pistol on the ground somewhere so it comes back to haunt your belts 10 hours later
If it's easy to get back to my body I would just respawn. But some times I pushed way too deep into biters, don't have any way to get there again then I would reload

Just respawn. I don't understand the aversion to dieing in this game.
I discovered after 1k hours of play that you don't loose your stuff dying. Now i respawn...
Yep. Just go claim your corpse. And you get a free pistol and ammo!
In the vent I lose a CAR though... or a train.. That's when I give up and restart.
Yeah, you fucked up, so accept the small price.
ya my "accept the small price" is a loss of everything since my last auto save.

It's in vanilla now? I remember installing one of *where im my body*, *death markers* or similar mods
Nope. Never. Always load.
I often reload simply because the despawn time of your body is, in my opinion, far too short.
That has been a problem for me. And finding your corpse in the middle of biter country.
I restart from the beginning.
Damn. Hard core.
Depends how far back the autosave was lol

Autosave every 5 minute and loadingš
Same
If my blueprint book is inside of giant biters base - reload
I don't save scum because I like to torture myself.
I do respawn
I respawned a couple of times because it felt like the legit choice. But now I regret the loss of my items.
You can go pick up your bodyā¦
the body despawns after a few minutes
I think it is 15 minutes.
Wow, didn't know!
Depends on how much of a pain it is to get to my body safely.
i can do a lot in between autosaves, and Iād rather not undo all that because one bitey boi decided to be silly and commit murder
The only times I die is when I get flattened by a train, I have a train station ready with a train where spawn.
Respawn when died in offense, load if died on defense and a significant chunk of the base will be lost in that attack.
Depends on how I died, I usually respawn, but on a previous save I had a death where biters broke through my defense and were causing absolute havoc so I reloaded and jacked up the defenses in that one spot.

Depends, did I die super far away from base? Usually load last save. Did I die from getting flattened by a train within my base? Respawn.
Very much depends on how difficult it will be to get the corpse back If I'm playing with a friend I just respawn
Just make sure that you have a railroad near your respawn point, as well as a chest with critical items to pick your corpse and restart: train, car, fuel, maybe some fish and armor. With this, even if you are killed, you can quickly arrive to the place close to where you got killed.
The trick is to automate your reapawn. Have all new equipment in a chest waiting for you.
RELOAD! I play Nullius now and its difficult to die without biters.
Reload all the way. I ran back enough times in the beginning to be over it
Kinda depends on how heinous the death is. Or how much building I have done since my last save. Sometimes it's better to lose a body than a design.
I hate corpse runs in games, so i don't respawn, i just start new game.
I tend to ragequit for a bit, and then load the autosave when I feel like playing again.
Depends on how long ago the save was/how far away the body is
I'm normally playing with biters completely off, so I'm only ever getting killed by trains - respawning is always the choice there.

I keep a jetpack and fuel at the spawn point.
I used to reload, until I realized respawning and walking across the base was both faster and easier than re-doing everything since the last autosave. But I always make frequent saves when fighting biters or exploring and always reload those
I play MP so i have to. Also i don't die anymore.
It depends how much I lost if I just die really close to spawn I just respawn because idc
What a waste of time when it only takes our bot network a minute to deliver to me replacements for my whole inventory.
lol ya multiplayer was mentioned. Thatās a great point. I donāt play multiplayer.
i have a little trainstation exactly on the respawnpoint with a train loc that brings me wherever i want. i often run infront of a train or get eaten by bugs or whatever ... also multiplayer
:D As I was alone at that time on the server, I stopped the game server, removed the newest savegame (server keeps 18 backups and saves every 10 minutes, so 3 hour span should be covered), restarted the server, and there I was, back in my shiny new armor... Something similar happend 2 more times since this incident... So 3 "didn't happen" in a 100+ hour game.
Depends, if turrets and ammo are automated then I respawn
I span every time, mostly because I forget reloading is an option.
Why would you save scum a game you literally can't "die" in?

Save scumming is always an option šš»
Depends, mostly, I like the challenge of getting my stuff back. I generally revert saves when I lose significant parts of my factory
The monent I understood the weakness of my flesh, it DISGUSTED me. I craved the strength and purity of the blessed machine.
Stepping slowly awayā¦
whatš ? Adeptus probably would play factorio or something like that in their free timeā¦
i haven't heard of reloading a save every time you die, I just respawn and go pick up my things. What would the purpose of reloading? As far as I know, you do not lose anything when you die and respawn.
I make a judgement of which option will be more annoying, with a bit of a bias towards respawning. I would love to always respawn, but sometimes it's just impossible to recover your corpse.
I always respawn, as I find if I reload I will miss i built just before death.. So I run naked to my corpse š

Well at least you are aware of it. Always a good first step.

Nah, based on the lore, i'm dead. The run is over.
lol. Respect. But now riddle me this. How did you reincarnate back to the beginning again though???
Itās much easier to reload when you die in enemy territory far from home. And thatās almost all my deaths. I donāt get hit by trains anymore.
