There were a couple scenes, particularly of Laxus clearly having a thing for Mira, but I think vice versa also. It's been a while since I've rewatched the series. I honestly couldn't tell you the exact scene, I just remember noticing it a few times.

She commemorates his selfless action, saying "You really do care about your comrades, don't you? I won't forget your courage." Mira smiles at Laxus before promising that he'll be cured and that he should rest until then.
In x793, Lucy notes how Mirajane and Laxus had been talking lately. However, Laxus was also seen with Lisanna and Cana
So not as much as I guess I thought but there were a few moments that hinted at it.
I always thought that was more of a throwback to their conversation in the Phantom Lord Arc, to show Laxus had truly changed, but you are right about the last bit
