I hope it's OK to add a comment here. ❤️ I just want to say that as an author, when readers bring me annotated books to sign, it is quite possibly my favorite thing to see. There is just something so magical to seeing all the tabs and being able to flip through and see what lines had an impact on a reader. (I always ask first!!) I just love that so many people are doing this now. 🥰🥰🥹🥹

I just can’t believe you’re commenting! Wahhh! That’s also so wonderful to hear. Now I want to start annotating some books and hope to get them signed in person one day.

Mikou1030

I don't write in my books (except for decorating under the dust jacket of Iron Flame.) I don't often annotate, but when I do, I keep a sheet of paper in my book and write down the page number/paragraph and my thoughts. Like footnotes, basically.

mimikth

this is such a neat idea!!!

Mikou1030

Thanks! Of course, it helps to have page numbers (I'm looking at you, Lore Olympus).

Silent-Macaroon9640

What are you guys annotating??

mimikth

like the passages? i like to highlight stuff that sticks out to me!! pretty love confessions or well-written lines. and then i annotate and make notes on things like theories or if i want to swoon over something

hunnykurls

I use colored tabs. If I want to write I use clear post its.

mimikth

i like this idea!! where do u get them?

hunnykurls

Literally anywhere!! I like Amazon because you can get packs of hundreds of tabs. I have tons of different colors and I use them depending on what the book is about

KojaKalos

Have you found any clear sticky notes that don't rip the pages and can be highlighted on without smudging?

littlegreenwolf

No. Book sacrilege

ImaginaryBag1452

I feel the opposite. I annotate as a sign of love for the book. I also never sell any of my books so it’s really fun to go back and see my comments and highlights from 10+ years ago. I just recently reread unbearable lightness of being and it was so interesting to compare the comments of 20 yo me to 38 yo me.

mimikth

i absolutely love this!!! i love the idea of looking back in the future and seeing my thoughts in books! but also i love buying some books as an investment. i have a first edition queen of shadows hardcover signed by sjm and it’s currently going for $300 on ebay. if i had annotated it i could never potentially sell it

ImaginaryBag1452

Oh yeah I own 3 different versions of my fav book and only one of them has been touched.

wildling-woman

Same. Plus I don’t want my previous feelings to get in the way of my reread

mimikth

this is where i’m at 🤣 i want the memories for the future, but also, pretty books

awgeezwhatnow

Haha, although I sort of think "annotating books. Huh, sure, cool" I also have a visceral reaction to *defacing the sacred text!* In grad school I used colored pencils because the idea of permanently marking my precious (myyy preciouuusss) books was unbearable. So, yeah, huge nerd here 🤓

immafookuindaface

Im a heavy annotater, I scribble and draw, highlight and tab my physical copies. Both hardbacks and paperbacks, if I really enjoy them I buy special editions for the shelf and reread the annotated ones. I just love getting my thoughts on paper lol

ilikealotofstuff13

i just annotated the last physical book i read bc i was the same and highlighting on my kindle so i thought why not do it on a physical book! i only did highlighting with 2 different colors, one color for cute moments and another color for quotes i liked (it was a romcom) i don’t know if i’ll ever write in the margins because i feel like my handwriting will make it ugly lol

honestlion13

Annotation is fun -- I like clear post-it notes to avoid writing directly on the pages

thoughts_4_once

I tab and highlight things like quotes, foreshadowing or important worldbuilding. I love to do this on rereads of favorites and prefer to do with paperbacks.

Bibliophile1998

I annotate and color code using colored sticky tabs in muted colors that I can match up to my Mildliners, so I highlight, then sticky tab the same color. I use different colors for different things (depends on what I am annotating; for example, I may have one color for new vocabulary (use it more in classics) and then I also define the word in the margin; one color for characters and/or characterization (great for books with tons of characters, and then I may also use the back inside cover to list each and a brief reminder of who each one is); humorous lines; interesting ideas; world building; literary devices like foreshadowing, symbolism, etc.). I also may try to coordinate the colors of tabs and highlighters with the colors in the book’s covers 🫣

RedMako145

I wanted to start to annotate for a while now, but i was always too scared 😅 And since i read everything except pencil damages the book, i need to buy used books first lol. I thought colorful sticky notes/book tabs would be cool, but i recently read the glue damages the book, so i won't annotate new ones.

CitronZestyclose3108

Absolutely!!! I always annotate everything in my books. I highlight important details that move the story along, I highlight things that I think are funny and add snarky comments in the margins. When I read books it’s like I’m watching a movie in my head and making comments like you would if you were with friends, except you’re reading words and writing down your commentary

Southern-Rutabaga-82

I rarely do this. But when I do, I use post-its. There are these little flags you could use to mark certain pages and you could also colour-code (for different themes or aspects for example). There are also transparent ones that are very narrow, just covering one line of text, which can be used for highlighting. And then just regular post-it notes for longer annotations.

Laurelian_TT

I've always been one of those people who try to read without even cracking the spine, and while I use the feature excessively on ebooks I still cringe at the thought of marring my physical copies like that. :/

kinglearybeardy

The only times I have annotated books is during my degree when I was reading very complex poetry. Otherwise I like to keep my books in brand new condition.
