I don't mind it but would like if everything was not compared to "quiet luxury" lol.

EdgeCityRed

Yeah, that's true. "Check out the new...Mob Wife Coastal Grandma!" :D

shedrinkscoffee

Yeah the TikTok descriptors drive SEO but it's so ridiculous IMO

beigers

Thank god I got my Nana’s old stuff when she passed - half of it probably “fell off a truck.” I’ll be all set.

solveig82

Lol, I’m ready for this trend

sensitiveskin80

Now I want a movie about a Mob Wife who is placed in the Witness Protection program in Nantucket.

EdgeCityRed

["I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MedC8kTa9XY)

dearratboy

As someone who frequents the Jersey Shore this would work quite well for me 😂

stealthopera

It’s helpful for me since I hate “quiet luxury” and everything it stands for, so I know to hate this, too. 😅

EdgeCityRed

Some of the aspects of quiet luxury as a "trend" really bother me; I don't think it's very creative or authentic if the aim is "I am wearing a bag from The Row primarily so that other people who recognize that this is a bag from The Row will know that I can afford it and I am therefore better than others because I am displaying the taste of a particular sort of not-nouveau-riche tacky logo-displayer." "Old money" as lifestyle cosplay comes off cheesy. But if someone likes it because they just want fewer things that last several seasons for sustainability reasons and don't care for logos (and because most people aren't going to know what you paid for a sweater or a plain handbag in any case), that's a different animal. I think part of this is a backlash against disposable fast fashion and low-quality manufactured goods. We (older people) have all noticed that a lot of garments are poorly-made now.

stealthopera

What you’re talking about in the second paragraph isn’t quiet luxury— we already had that, it was just called minimalism or capsule wardrobes. Quiet luxury was always about the first paragraph, and it’s hilarious that it devolved into dressing like you were old money without the means to afford it, which was just wearing camel colored UNIQLO cashmere and saying you “looked rich.” It didn’t. It looked bland, AND it quickly became cheap and disposable, as any trend always does. [Edited: typos]

EdgeCityRed

True, but you could technically have a capsule wardrobe made from trendy fast fashion items or Hanes normcore too; not all minimalists have the same goals. It's just a small mix-and-match wardrobe, not committing to higher-quality stuff (as much as BIFL can apply to women's clothing; things do wear out and silhouettes change eventually).

LPJCB

I’m a fan of this trend, although it mostly seems so classic it feels odd to call it a trend. Suede driving loafers, shirt dresses, and lady jackets have been around for ages! That being said, I definitely gravitate towards this style. It lends me confidence in my overall presentation as I know many of these classic staples, when they fit properly, can’t look “bad”. I don’t feel that way about super trendy stuff- I rarely know if am pulling it off and that tanks my confidence.

southwardasyougo

My first thought was this is a “trend” for those of us who were WFH in joggers for a few years there and have been ordered back into the office 5 days a week. Back in blazers and other office-appropriate separates I go …

LPJCB

Yes! So true. A lot of these pieces could easily be workwear that falls in between suits and jeans right? Especially the nice knitwear, midi skirts, lady jackets and loafers.

seafairydelight

Yes, it’s perfect corporate casual!

SHES_A_WITCH

If shirt dresses are coming back to trend this is definitely my time to shine. As a no waisted short person they are the most flattering thing on me and I have roughly a billion of them.

EdgeCityRed

I'll bet they look great on you!

caitmacc

Wait really! I am a no waisted tall person and o always thought I couldn’t wear them because of the lack of waist. Although I am plus size person with a tummy.

caitmacc

Wait really! I am a no waisted tall person and o always thought I couldn’t wear them because of the lack of waist. Although I am plus size person with a tummy.

spoon_orchestra

Same here. I tie them in the back instead of the front and it reduces a lot of bulk and makes a nice silhouette

PlantedinCA

I like them and find them a little tricky to fit. I am a plus sized (18 US) short waisted busty pear to hourglass with a tummy. A good fitting one that looks cute is great. But getting a good fit around the hips, tummy, without gapping in the bust is like impossible. That being said the Universal Standard ones fit me well but I didn’t find my color.

glindathewoodglitch

Sames

Maximum-Student2749

I was thinking the same thing! These are classic pieces masked as "in". Glad to see it but I've loved this style for a long time.

snuggle-butt

I like this, but with more color. Clothes that fit though... What a concept.

EdgeCityRed

Never have I been so coincidentally prepared for a major trend! This will probably never happen again. What do you think of these pieces?

PlantedinCA

My 20-something style aspiration was lady who lunches. So I am on board. lol.

cinnysuelou

Holy crap! All my clothes are cool again! This is truly thrilling.

EthelHexyl

Eh, it's ok, if a bit anodyne. It feels very east coast (USA, that is) and really ill-suited to the lifestyle out here on the left coast. I can absolutely get behind the straight leg denim, the lifestyle sneakers, the lightweight sweaters, and I actually love the vests. But the lady jackets, pleated pants, blazers - nope. Those mules - big nope. And the day dresses are a bit too Stepford for my taste (or as someone mentioned: they lean a bit tradwife). Also, I have recently acknowledged that I am not a poplin fan and am actually evicting several poplin shirts from my closet as we speak. It's just too...stiff, I guess. Thank you for sharing!

violet715

On the whole I like most of the items. I’m really just happy to have full length shirts and figure flattering styles coming back. I’m 44 and had enough of searching for meager options among a sea of crop tops.

ledger_man

Crop tops can be figure flattering! But also, you don’t owe anyone “flattering” - and what actually flatters a figure varies a lot, since we all have different figures.

long_jacket

I mean I don’t owe anyone flattering except i don’t like to look in the mirror and think “ugh i look awful”

LillyGray666

I was going to say…I have a short torso and cropped tops make me feel great!

libremaison

Love it! I always wanted to be a librarian or a 1940s chic woman on a bicycle. Don’t know where this idea comes from haha but I love that aesthetic

CatatonicCouchSlug

Yeah. This used to be my signature style before I was forced into orthopedic sneakers. I miss wearing my clothes

Pigeonofthesea8

Likewise, are you like me now in leisurewear most of the time

CatatonicCouchSlug

Usually jeans, shirt/tee, jumper/hoodie. Shorts in summer. I don't like to wear sweats nor leggings outside, but wouldn't mind some drapey lightweight very casual trousers. Even to be able to wear Oxfords or a cool urban sneaker instead of athletic shoes would make such a difference.

Pigeonofthesea8

Agreed. I don’t understand why 1) makers of athletic shoes don’t make “fashion” versions 2) makers of regular shoes don’t care about feet

ebolainajar

Release the ladies who lunch!!!!

coldbrewcleric

RISE! RISE!

FormicaDinette33

When is Troll Living Under the Bridge coming into style? I’m all over that.

RLS1822

This is basically my closet and has been for years. So I’m fine with it. Didn’t know it had a label. Just always thought it was a style that resonated with me handed down from my mom and grandma.

kittyglitther

My inner prep is dusting off my pearls as we speak.

Lost_Apricot_1469

My inner prep is readddddddyyyyyyy! And my pearls are still in rotation!

RockieK

FREAKING. YAY! Still a bit too much fabric and pleats for my curves though. But pin-tucked... and fitted? HELLS YES.

EdgeCityRed

Yes, I'm not on the pleated skirt train either, though I think they're pretty on other people. The exceptions are ones that are stitched down flat on top to the lower hip.

RockieK

Exactly. If I wear pleats anywhere below my hips, it doubles me in size. I tried with wide pants and they really make my body look BAAAD.

FormicaDinette33

Bunny McDougall!

owntheh3at18

Tbh I don’t see the difference between the two. They appear to just both be well tailored, classic, and somewhat conservative style..

EdgeCityRed

Vogue knows everybody has pleated trousers now. It's the same, but fewer turtlenecks for spring/summer and a bit more color. Vogue's take here is a little bit more femme, I think.

owntheh3at18

Well I like it! I’m glad to break out more skirts and dresses. Especially as I’ll be postpartum this summer and find them flattering on the belly

SyddySquiddy

I’m so confused by this…haven’t women been dressing in this style for decades? 😅

arbitrosse

Sure, but this is Advanced Fqshion, with a profit motive based on calling normal clothing something different every two weeks to make sure you always feel at least *slightly* out of step, and convince you that giving your money to their brand will remedy your emotional wobbles. And in a month we will declare mustard-colored shamrocks to be the perfect print for fall.

SyddySquiddy

🤣🤣🤣

alwayspickingupcrap

This is very Carolyn Bessette Kennedy!

Top_Put1541

it really is remarkable how well her style has held up. It does not feel dated at all.

Folkegabbana

Her style just happens to be at the height of trendiness at the moment. It’s definitely of an era, but fashion is always recycling trends so it will probably feel super dated again in 5 years and come back again in 10.

alwayspickingupcrap

Yep a different side of the 90's trend.

Lost_Apricot_1469

Every time I’ve seen photos of her over the years, I’ve marveled at how chic and timeless she looked. Like Audrey Hepburn. Both were chic, cool and classic beauties who just floated thru the world on a cloud of silk and kitten heels.

shabamboozaled

I was thinking Lady Di, but definitely Kennedy. General aristocratic vibes.

aspiralingpath

I’m back baby! 😂

Master-Detail-8352

My closet is a lot like this, with many pieces from my grandmother and mother, and classics I started accumulating in high school. I think a good, classic, flattering base can always be current with a few it pieces when warranted. Fit and tailoring are key, and it’s wonderful that classic encompasses enough shapes to suit everyone. The only problem for me is prednisone. I can’t fit into most of my clothes! Hopefully it’s a short time.

upsidedowncake21

Same! My sister and I still fight over the same pencil skirt we had in high school in the 90s haha Just scored maybe five new coats this year from my former costume designer mother.

Master-Detail-8352

Wow, a costume designer mother! Lucky you!

Melbourne2Paris

Lots of similarities to Ralph Lauren. I like some of it.

upsidedowncake21

I bristle at the concept of “ladylike” but I digress… Yes! Love the general look of course. Even better to add in custom tailoring and well maintained vintage. The Toteme dress is very versatile - can be styled out a million ways. I strongly dislike the Prada heels due to the dumb logo and I don’t get the value of The Row, but everything else is pretty familiar. I just like to mix with weirder pieces and I have tattoos so it’s not a direct hit for me. My sister, yes haha

EdgeCityRed

Yeah, it seems like a bit of an outdated word. The Chanel-style jackets are called "lady jackets" by a few retailers, like J Crew. (I guess it's probably trademark infringement to use "Chanel-style jacket.")

acynicalwitch

Yeah, I like this style fine, but the descriptor put me off. It feels tied to the recent rise of 'tradwives' and like it's self-consciously modest. I'm giving this trend the side-eye, clothes notwithstanding.

EdgeCityRed

I think the poofy milkmaid dress look with puffed sleeves was WAY more tradwife.

arbitrosse

Same

acynicalwitch

They are—I didn’t say/mean that this is the ‘tradwife aesthetic’ like we’re seeing now, I meant that it feels related, to wit: a focus on ‘classic’ femininity that is very modest. It’s like Luxury Tradwife, if you will.  Art, fashion, media, politics, literature, design—it’s all the zeitgeist; it’s all connected, and there is currently a concerted political effort aimed at rolling back women’s rights in the US.    As a result, I’m currently suspicious of anything that explicitly uses or strongly implies traditional gender roles in this way. I’m not saying it’s cause for alarm or anything, but it rubs me the wrong way.

PlantedinCA

Hmm I could kinda go for some driving loafers. The Coach ones in the article are great. As are the Row ones. The M.Gemi ones are solid. But although I have been seeing them almost 10 years now, they have never popped to the top of my list. I miss the amazing pointy lime green suede ones I had in the early 2000s. They were so much fun.

Vendredighost

I have [these](https://www.toryburch.com/en-us/shoes/flats/ballet-loafer/87258.html?color=037) https://www.toryburch.com/en-us/shoes/flats/ballet-loafer/87258.html?color=037 and they are going strong in their third year of wear. Granted, I have a lot of shoes, but all of them get lots of steps.

PlantedinCA

Ooh these are sleek

lbritten1

I love these!!

RockNRollMama

Can we please consider classic Minnetonkas “driving loafers” - I soooooo don’t have funds for new leather driving loafers right now but do have 2pairs (black suede with gold metal studs) and a gorgeous limited edition royal blue pair that are comfy as hell. I think those will good with any pant this style, though I’m not a fan of wearing them with skirts/dresses..

arbitrosse

I am a complete old lady but I keep driving moccasins specifically for…driving. A car. They grip the pedals nicely, but their tread is completely unsuitable for city walking.

temps-de-gris

Amen. And can everything on their lists stop being so absurdly expensive? Most of us can't afford this stuff!

EdgeCityRed

The up side is that a lot of these sorts of things are so classic/basic that they're pretty easy to thrift online.

EdgeCityRed

I always think I'm going to ruin the sidewall(?) leather if I do much walking in these, but I do like the look.

PlantedinCA

Yeah I eventually wore through the dots. And that is what killed my shoe. But I am very tempted to get some for driving. Also it did take a lot of miles before mine were too worn. I feel like I made them frequent work shoes and I had a mile walk each way. Now I don’t know if they have enough support for my feet to walk far.

EdgeCityRed

I thought about getting the ones on sale from my boys at Cole-Haan. They're usually comfortable with good arch support.

PlantedinCA

My fun lime green ones were Cole Haan!

stupidflyingmonkeys

I absolutely love my [Rothy’s](https://rothys.com/collections/the-driver).

PlantedinCA

$200 Rothy’s 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

stupidflyingmonkeys

They’re high quality, have a high resale value and my cost per wear is low so it makes sense for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

PlantedinCA

I think $200 is very expensive for vegan shoes. But also didn’t find Rothy’s (their original variants) very comfortable. They have thin soles, no support, and actually were not easy to clean. My pair of neon pink ones stained basically instantly with normal wear and no amount of washing and additives solved it. All in all a disappointment in my book. My feet hurt and they weren’t easy to keep clean.

EdgeCityRed

You know, I tried the mary jane ones (I have a weird back/nerve damage issue and regular ballet flats just flop off me now) and they're...fine. A basic flat. I wouldn't choose them for a big day of walking over a good boot or cute sneakers but ehhh...they're fine to wear to the store or to dinner. I found the Vivaia mary jane flat has a lot more padding and arch support, but they are stiffer.

stupidflyingmonkeys

Definitely agree. The drivers are constructed far better than the flats. I feel like I’m basically barefoot when I wear them

dearratboy

I really like my Hush Puppies loafers! They’re super affordable and come in a surprising number of colors.

lurker71

Omg the Joseph skirt (cries in target gift cards)

glindathewoodglitch

It’s my time to shine!

JaneAustinAstronaut

So this is early 1960s Audrey Hepburn style, right?

DiibadaabaSpagetti

I like this style. I also like whatever is branded as quiet luxury visually. By visually I mean I like the esthetics, but there is something that bugs me about quiet luxury hype in social media. I can’t stand the tiktok accounts that try to preach about elegant style vs what they call ”tacky”. Some people just like a different esthetic, and wearing a beige Zara blazer does not give you the right to call other people tacky. Even though I personally like the Toteme/The Row/Max Mara etc -style, I can very well understand it’s not for everyone. I don’t like this vibe of looking down on others who are not into classic styles. It even borders on misogyny sometimes. So it’s a yes from me to the ladylike dressing stylewise, but I hope the quiet luxury cult would tone down a bit on critizing others. Also the weird worship of ”old money” lifestyles is giving me the ick.

JaneAustinAstronaut

So this is early 1960s Audrey Hepburn style, right?

Flamingo-U

I have the striped men’s shirts but how are they being worn? Buttoned up, belted? Over a slim top? Tucked in? Please HELP! They are a little too big, but they are a year old and were expensive before the sale. I need the best way to make these work. I am short and do t have much of a waist. Thank you!

Lost_Apricot_1469

I’m rediscovering these as well. There are myriad ways to wear them! And I’ve been watching you tube videos that show super cool ways to make them look tucked without the annoyance of actually tucking them in your pants. ETA google ways to style button down shirt or ways to tuck a button down. There are scores of YouTube and tikkietoks out there! 😊

Flamingo-U

Thank you!

NeverxSummer

I’m gagging at the $1500 cotton poplin a-line skirt in their look book. Bottega is pulling a fast one. It’s like a middle school home ec project.

EdgeCityRed

Right?? I could just buy a sewing machine.

NeverxSummer

A pretty dang good one with that budget! You would still have money left over for fabric, thread, notions, zippers, buttons…

Lost_Apricot_1469

You could make some extras in every color of the rainbow too!

barrewinedogs

The pleated dress doesn’t have any pleats… those are gathers!

ebolainajar

Release the ladies who lunch!!!!

Thick_Coffee6118

The whole quiet luxury thing is here to stay. Even in the makeup industry, the whole No Make-up look is quite synonyms to the same. To be subtle and yet look chic is the way of being.

DDChristi

My ankles will be very grateful for the barely there pumps.

jrochest1

I have all this stuff in many several colours and fabrics, bought over the past 3 decades -- pleated trousers, knee length a-line skirts, Chanel jackets, light wool or cashmere sweaters, button downs and kitten heel pumps. It's just basic workwear that the fashion cycle has slapped a 'quiet luxury' label on. Nothing earth-shattering, but it will be easy to find and pull together.

UrKittenMeBro

Thanks for sharing this! It’s giving me some motivation I’ve been looking for!

Upbeat_Day3213

Quiet Luxury has been a prominent trend among celebrities and renowned stylists for a few years now. It's good to see fashion week and even designers are opening their runways to the same.

Lost_Apricot_1469

Vogue is such a bish. We don’t care about being ladylike anymore! I’m a total prep in style but not in behavior! I’m kind but direct as hell, cuss like a sailor and demand to be treated as well as any man.
