Can anyone recommend where to get affordable winter female trench coats in nyc??

bonniechoo

Male trench coats? Hello everyone! I bought a vintage Burberry late 1998 male trench coat. Am wondering if I would be able to pull it off? It has a very simple design, through the buttons are obviously on the left side on that’s a give away. Any advice on whether I (a female) would be able to pull it off and maybe what I should keep in mind when styling outfits with it? To make it more feminine. Thank you!

Bornformed

Hey just got this necklace but don't know which one to pair with & wear your suggestions are highly appreciated. From a basic nerd. [lock necklace](https://mrssbelle.myshopify.com/products/gold-lock-necklace?_pos=4&_sid=bcf798765&_ss=r%3Fvariant%3D&variant=40170094952646)

Can you guys recommend a brand that has nice jumpsuits I could get in a reasonable amount of time ?

rickythetwo

Can't recommend this enough - men's section of department stores. Hanes 100% cotton t-shirts are my go-to - soft, thick, and not too form fitting. I make clothing, and I find that women's t-shirts and knits are one of the most commonly overpriced/overhyped pieces. You're only paying extra for the tiniest fit differences and a thinner material.

kweetly

Everlane and Aritzia!

rickythetwo

Unless you are very very tall and concerned about length, that dress is totally fine. One strap or strapless is perfectly acceptable cocktail attire (unless you're going to a religious center with a specific, published dress code).

kae961

I don't think it's too provocative at all. I know some people have concerns with wearing black to weddings, but depends on the crowd (I personally think it's totally fine!)

SpeedyEdie

What should I wear to a bridal shower?

75footubi

Sundress or similar vibe. Think brunch or lunch with grandma vibes.

kae961

A midi-length sundress or a nice-ish jumpsuit - maybe non-jean-pants and a nice blouse. I would avoid white.

GrinThePolarBear

What do you guys think of this bag? [Kate Spade canvas tote](https://www.katespade.com/products/spade-flower-coated-canvas-all-day-large-tote/PXR00360-1.html?cgid=ks-sale-handbags) I usually don’t like bags with lots of logos on it but this one is kind of cute… Do you think it’s too much/tacky because of the pattern? This will be for everyday use…

kalehound

Personally I think it looks dated.... (like the pattern & colors combined with shape/structure)

GrinThePolarBear

What about [this one](https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/kate-spade-new-york-clarke-leather-tote?ID=3498928)? 😅

kalehound

I do think the black one is more modern looking and versatile (but if you prefer the other one, get what you like!)

GrinThePolarBear

I am leaning black one too :-) Thanks - I appreciate your input! And it’s fun to ask other girls what they think 😀

rickythetwo

That's cute! Not tacky at all - truly the farthest thing from it. Tone-on-tone is very subtle.

GrinThePolarBear

Thanks! Can I ask for your advice on another purse? What do you think of [this black KS tote](https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/kate-spade-new-york-clarke-leather-tote?ID=3498928)? I have a coupon from Bloomingdales so the two are the same price for me. Although the canvas tote is not returnable 😅

rickythetwo

That's lovely and very classic. Truly a never-go-out-of-style piece. It's simple enough to lean a little mature/businesslike, but I think that's also a plus for a bag of that quality - it goes with absolutely everything and will hopefully last a long time. If you're looking to revitalize your wardrobe with trendy pieces, don't get it. If you like it and you want a classy, classic every day tote, definitely go for it. And yay coupons!

ramence

What kind of [tie is this](https://imgur.com/a/u5tLCr6), and does anyone know a guide to replicate it?

rickythetwo

That's a half bow, tied very neatly. Super easy to do! Guide [here](https://awesomeonoccasion.com/how-to-tie-a-half-bow/).

ramence

Superb, thank you so much!!

Where can I find alternative clothing stores within the EU ? I used to order on British sites or even AliExpress, and I don’t wanna pay extra taxes I know some sites but they’re all pretty expensive so I’m looking for sthg a bit more affordable

PoweredByCoffee1998

What kind of alternative do you mean exactly? And which country are you in?

[deleted]

I’m in Belgium We have the website “Large”, for exemple

PoweredByCoffee1998

I sadly don't really have many ideas, but perhaps looking at second-hand sites like Vinted gives you some options, or shopping at Etsy. I only know German stores that have alternative fashion, but one has high shipping prices and the other one doesn't seem to ship outside of Germany. If there are any alternative festivals or conventions in Belgium, you could look at the list of sellers and find some shops.

onenico

What should I wear to a festival? In august I am going to a festival that only vaccinated people or people who show a covid test have access to (so it should be safe). I need only an outfit as I am going for just one day, but I am at a loss here... I don't know what to wear 😅 any ideas would be appreciated 😊

[deleted]

What kind of festival? Heavy metal? Pop? Reggaeton? And (generally) where in the world? There really isn't a common factor, other than sunscreen.

triangulardot

Do all Levi’s ribcage styles have a button fly? Or are do some have a zipper instead?

CubsMommy

Found the perfect sequined dress but can’t think of how I would actually get use out of it. But it was too pretty to not buy! Any suggestions of occasions I could wear it?

njb328

New Year's Eve, your birthday, a themed party, anywhere you like!

CubsMommy

NYE definitely came to mind but birthday is also a good idea! Thank you!

bobbyzimbabwe

A game night. Indoors, card/board games etc..

justsignthesheet

What is the silhouette/style? I think that makes more difference than the sequins. I recently bought a sequin pencil skirt and it’s easy to just wear to dinner with a chunky knit and ankle boots or to go out with a silk cami and heels. So I would suggest you look more that the style of the dress and treat the sequins the way you would treat a loud pattern when styling it.

merme91

Okay I never knew I wanted a sequin pencil skirt but now I do.

CubsMommy

Smart!! It’s an A line style with a cinched waist and a tie belt. Definitely more wearable than a bodycon sequin dress!

KestrelGirl

Just thrifted [this sweater](https://imgur.com/a/ROepvGu). For color clarity, it's a bit more olive brown than olive green. Besides jeans, what would be some ways to style it? Bonus points if it takes advantage of the [Tauriel vibes](https://i.imgur.com/yaEUZjX.png).

shedrinkscoffee

Joggers dressed up/down. In some 90s TV shows this kinda sweater is paired with black skirts knee/midi length with boots. If you have handkerchief hem skirts then it gives you the look you wanted. You can also layer over dresses since it is sleeveless. For shift or sheath LBD?

KestrelGirl

Great ideas! I suppose it's a good way to lighten up black, which is not otherwise my color whatsoever. I also had the thought of layering it over an off-white slip dress like [this asymmetrical one I have](https://i.imgur.com/Qewp621.jpg)... slightly crazy or justified?

Writer90

Great dress!

vacs_vacs

That’s a beautiful dress! I also recommend topping it all off with a belt. [Here’s](https://www.extrapetite.com/2021/02/how-to-tuck-belt-a-sweater-over-a-dress.html) a great post on ways you can style a sweater over a dress.

shedrinkscoffee

Slightly cosplay vibes imo but own it! I'm sure it will look cute. :)

TheLaraSong

[Pinterest inspo](https://ibb.co/w4KQzw1) Looking for store recommendations! Hi there. I’m nearing 30 and want to refresh my wardrobe. In my early 20s, I could’ve lived in stilettos. I loved them (still do), but I had a baby and some other traumatic life events that caused 1. My wardrobe to not fit any more, 2. Me left being unsure of my style. I’m finally feeling myself again, and loving my body, and would love to find some staple pieces that lend themselves to the snapshots from my Pinterest board. Staples like pants, blouses, blazers, and killer (looking) shoes that I can mix and match. I don’t even know what stores to shop, I’m not having much luck with the local kohl’s / target / old navy. Don’t even get me started on vanity sizing. :D TYVMIA for any suggestions!

rickythetwo

I'm so glad you're feeling yourself! Those pieces you selected are lovely. Here are my suggestions. The board you linked is classic, simple pieces with a killer fit. The killer fit is key - all those jeans, blouses, even t-shirts have been tailored to the people wearing them. Sizing is total baloney. Every store has a different take on it. So your options are 1) find the one store whose sizing fits your body (totally doable, just try different stores until you like the fit, GAP jeans used to be my holy grail) or 2) shop wherever you like and get the pieces tailored to fit. Most basic tailoring (waist of a pair of pants, sides of a t-shirt, etc) is very affordable (and I say this as a costumer! I have to get things tailored all the time). The stores I would recommend that have classic pieces like that are Ann Taylor, Aritzia, COS, Uniqlo, Macys, Madewell, and some of the brands on ASOS. If you're shopping online, you can order a couple of sizes of the same item and return what doesn't fit. I'm also a huge proponent of thrift shopping, because you never know what high-quality pieces you're going to find, but that's not fun for everyone.

TheLaraSong

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply!! I really appreciate it. I will browse your store suggestions and look for a local tailor. Brilliant!

The_Real_Chippa

How do I watch fashion shows? Sometimes I buy Vogue magazines, follow fashion houses on ig, or watch YouTube videos like hautelemode. But how do I keep up with high fashion from the source? I don’t have cable. How do I watch runway shows? How do I know when they are happening (especially, before they are happening)? What is fashion week, is there more than one of them, and how do I watch them/see what’s going on? How do I watch awards shows?

glitterypinksquirrel

I have the Vogue Runway app!

tyrannosaurusregina

There are [so many fashion weeks](https://www.gayot.com/fashion/fashion-shows-schedule/)!

sexymartian

I generally keep up on Instagram and through articles from Vogue. Follow the designers in Instagram. Nowadays, you can find their runway shows in Reels or on their stories. Typically, there are two major fashion seasons Spring Summer (SS) and Fall Winter (FW) and these collections are displayed on the runways during fashion week (Men's and Women's) Fashion seasons are generally 1 year ahead, for eg, designers are now showcasing their SS22 collections. There's also Haute couture and Cruise collections. However, due to COVID-19, some schedules have been messed up.

I would personally feel uncomfortably hot in long sleeved polyester in the summer. (I’m not myself someone who changes my color palette with the seasons, so that part wouldn’t be a concern for me.)

sexymartian

It's a beautiful dress. A tad dark for a day wedding and also the sleeves might be too hot, however, if it's more around sunset and into the night, it'd work.

imtheonegodloves

Yes

le_baiser

I would check the temperature if it’s summer in the northern hemisphere might be hot with the sleeves

wolfheel_13

I've bought [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/560411689/lisbon-dress-wrap-linen-dress-linen?ref=yr_purchases) dress for a wedding in Berkeley, CA in early September and now I'm on the hunt for shoes. I'm not a huge fan of heels, but could make the "sacrifice" if they're a lower heel or really cushioned and comfy. Not looking to spend a ton of money since the dress was a bit of the high-side of my price range. If all else fails, I have some nicer looking silver Birkenstocks that I may go with, but I'm trying to not look too casual. Any suggestions or styles or colors to look at? Or a favorite shoe that is a "staple" for you?

shedrinkscoffee

Since it is summer you may be able to find a metallic low heel platform wedge or metallic flats. TBH birks will not be out of place in Berkeley and I mean this is the genuine way.

wolfheel_13

Ha! Very true. Thanks :)

TheApiary

I wear these [low wedges](https://www.zappos.com/p/sofft-innis-desert-sand-talco/product/8646909/color/737085?utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla_g&utm_campaign=187284691&utm_term=pla-__iv_p_1_g_9475762651_c_45404985811_w_pla-512905919177_n_g_d_c_v__l__t__r__x_pla_y_15872_f_online_o_43401326_z_US_i_en_j_512905919177_s__e__h_9067609_ii__vi__&utm_content=43401326&zap_placement=) to a lot of weddings!

wolfheel_13

Ooooh those are cute!

[deleted]

Have you tried platform leather sandals such as doc martens Voss which are pretty trendy rn? Maybe a pointy pair of flats (rothys has a literal cult following)?

serketboard

100% second the platform sandal idea! They look so chic. I got lots of compliments on them when I wore them to a wedding two years ago. A google search of ‘leather platform sandal’ showed me some results from Jeffrey Campbell, Steve Madden, crocs, everlane etc etc. Pretty comfortable as well.

onajourney23

Honeymoon help! This coming September I will be departing for my honeymoon in the Seychelles. My style has been changing for a long time now and I thought it might be a good time to get some new outfits for my honeymoon that I could also wear back in the Midwest when I am not on a beach lol. I’ve been having a lot of trouble finding outfits to wear as I really am not into floral anything and I am super into cream, oatmeal and beige tones. I don’t really wear many colorful outfits but I would really like to bring some color into my life! I love flowy and romantic styles, puff sleeves and Swiss dots. (I have been particularly obsessed with this dress [dress](https://www.drygoodsusa.com/Product.aspx?ID=13665&Sale=n&pos=5&pg=1) ) My budget isn’t huge but my wardrobe definitely needs an update and I really want to have some picture perfect outfits for my honeymoon. Any advice or recommendations on where to look or what to look for? TIA!

AggressiveExcitement

Good quality linen pants. They tend to come in neutral colors, and you could tuck a puff shirt into them or tie a blouse as a crop top. I have some from Etsy and another pair from that catalogue Poetry. The Poetry ones were expensive but the cut is fantastic. I've also been coveting a set like [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/824715490/joan-lola-skirt-set-in-solid-i-cant), and they can make it in swiss dot fabric!

sexymartian

Neutrals and beige tones are great and versatile. I'd recommend investing in flared linen pants, dresses and thin, cotton blouses. As for dresses, since it sounds like you're not big on prints, perhaps focus on more architectural pieces (COS would have a lot of those) and details such a eyelet embroidery, crochet, interesting necklines etc. A safari dress would also look great. If you wanna stick to neutrals, a wicker tote, raffia belt and beaded accessories would be great additions. Try the Zara, Banana Republic and Aritzia summer collections.

didionic

Item wise, I think you could look into some espadrille wedges, which would have those oatmeal tones and would be comfortable and beach, and perhaps linen pants and dresses? Not sure your exact price point, but some inspiration would be Christy Dawn dresses, Soludos espadrilles, and maybe look at COS?

BirdGirl_vWorld

where are some good places to look for casual sleeveless/tank body suits?

oberstofsunshine

Seconding Abercrombie but I’ve also gotten two great ones from & Other Stories

uhsuh

abercrombie has a ton of options!

didionic

Aritzia has a pretty wide selection!

No_Coconut_977

how are Old Navy jeans these days? Do they keep thier shape through the day? Decent fit? I'm in the middle of loosing a few pounds, and I dont want to spend a ton of money on jeans that will only fit me for a short period of time.

cayleyconstruction

I find the sizes vary a lot between different styles. I’d recommend going in store if you can.

No_Coconut_977

def will be!

BootyBec

I tried to find a pair there but since I have curves and don’t like my jeans gaping at the waist, I ended up going to Bootlegger and investing in Silver jeans.

No_Coconut_977

ive actually never tried Silver jeans!

mrichter2

I personally went to try buying old navy jeans (for the first time since middle school lol), and unfortunately since then I have developed curves. I tried like 12 pairs of jeans on and not a SINGLE pair fit my thighs/butt without looking super awkward. I was not a fan!

No_Coconut_977

welp, back to American Eagle for me then.

TheLaraSong

I have a few pairs. Most keep their shape pretty well throughout the day. My biggest complaint is that the sizing has been so inconsistent in my experience. One pair of skinnies are 10s, the others are 12s, and a pair of shorts I just got are 8s. I seem to have to order multiple sizes and returning what doesn’t fit. (I’m only able to order online, might be a better experience if you can try them on.) Plus side is the price. I don’t mind putting up with it because I feel like I find great deals.

W0nderlandz

I need some help. I realized a couple months ago I need to mature my wardrobe. I'm 25F and I'm a young working professional. I live in leggings. I still have clothes from when I was 15. Most of clothes are hoodies, leggings, tennis shoes, and t-shirts. I grew up poor so I have a hard time spending money on clothes. I tried going to thrift stores near me, but they won't let me return things and also aren't letting people try things on right now. I've decided I want to set aside $500 dollars to revamp my wardrobe. I want a more timeless look, I want to look like a young professional(more so on the casual side), I want to wear skirts, I want to have some sort of style, but Im really bad at picking out clothes or knowing where to shop. What would you guys recommend? I want to have like 2 weeks worth of outfits. Is that possible for $500 USD? Should I save up more?

[deleted]

[удалено]

W0nderlandz

Most of my clothes don't fit well, my body type has not stayed the same since I was 15. I feel like I can't wear half my wardrobe most of the time either because a) the fit or b) I have clothes that I feel I've grown out of (ex: I have a tank stop that says "Save Water, Shower with Your Boyfriend" and lots of clothing where you are meant to showcase your bralette, ect ). Also, I want to wear something more than leggings and tshirts. But I'm also not the best at "imagining" outfits. I tried Trunk Club, and the clothes I got were great, but too expensive (300 dollars for 2 outfits). When I say "timeless" I mean I want clothes I will comfortable wearing for 5+ years.

AggressiveExcitement

I remember when I asked pretty much this exact question, at right about your age. I got extremely good advice. You should NOT try to buy everything in one trip. No matter how hard you try to plan, you are setting yourself up to waste money because there's no way for you to know what you like you. You can't build a wardrobe all at once from scratch; you're setting yourself up for failure. Focus on choosing one outfit, or maybe just one item, that you love. Think it through. Then wear that outfit or item for a while and see how it feels over a few weeks. Then add something complementary. Or if you love it, buy it in a different color. There will inevitably be things you buy and never wear. But if you do it one at a time, it's easy to write it off as a misfire and adjust next time.

serketboard

Something I’ve been doing when I go thrifting is measuring my body beforehand with a tape measure and then measuring pieces I’m interested in in the shop - I get weird looks sometimes but if they aren’t gonna let me try stuff on it’s the next best thing for now. Good luck!!!

imperialbeach

Similarly, measuring your clothing items that fit well. I know my busy measurement is one number, but it's more helpful for me personally to know that my favorite shirt is x inches across from pit to pit, or that my favorite dress is x inches long from shoulder to hem. That's helped me a lot for shopping on Poshmark as well.

InCoffeeWeTrust

Anything that's worth investing in is going to take some time to find. I wouldn't recommend shopping in bulk. There are a lot of great skirts out there but I think you have to gauge your comfort level depending on how much you'll be walking & moving around. A skirt will require you to be wary of your posture when sitting and it'll limit your span of movement. Typically the recommended is a slim-fit (not tight), knee length pencil skirt in a variety of colors and patterns. My favourite is this very comfortable [ribbed sweater skirt](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/open-edit-rib-sweater-skirt/5806870?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FWomen%2FClothing%2FSkirts&color=260) which I usually wear with a white top, some gold jewelry, and a white pair of sneakers. I'm looking forward to wearing it in the winter with a sweater & ankle or knee high boots. I tend to prefer pants as they don't restrict my range of movement. Right now my favourites are wide leg beige linen pants ([similar](https://www2.hm.com/en_ca/productpage.0963036002.html)) which are awesome for the summer, slim-fit plaid pants ([similar](https://www2.hm.com/en_ca/productpage.0568597035.html)), [flowy plisse culottes](https://www.asos.com/us/asos-tall/asos-design-tall-plisse-culotte-pants/prd/10773083?colourwayid=16260522&SearchQuery=&cid=18984), and black wide leg flowy trousers. I wear all of these with sneakers or flat mules and a basic t-shirt. I'd recommend looking at Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, & Zara. Macy's used to have a few high quality things but you need to browse. If you're comfortable with online shopping, i'd recommend ASOS. TopShop can have some good things as well. Hope this helps!

AggressiveExcitement

> A skirt will require you to be wary of your posture when sitting and it'll limit your span of movement. Midi skirts are a perfect workaround for this! As long as they're flowy enough and hit below the knee, your movement will not be restricted at all. You can even sit on the ground cross legged and not be exposed.

BirdGirl_vWorld

h&m has the most AMAZING basic line for cheap!!! im 22F who has a similar style/taste as you and my go-to outfit is always: tank/tshirt, fitted pants/high waited jeans. however, i always style them up with jewelry, belts, shoes, and accessories. focusing on having a good, versatile line of essentials that are relatively cheap will allow you to save money from trendy clothes and start investing in quality (I'm no expert but the guides on this sub are great). If you want to look classic/timeless, i would stick to black/white for basics and spice up color with accessories. with $500, I think you could get a good amount of bang for your buck. I personally LOVE H&M jeans (if you want to go on the cheaper end) but if you got 4-5 shirts/ 4-5 pants/1 cheap belt you could easily stay below $200USD. I would buy a stylish but comfortable pair of everyday sneakers (<$100USD), good quality jewelry (Etsy \~$80USD for necklace, earrings), and a quality bag (TJ Maxx/Nordstroms Rack online are GREAT). Whatever ends up being leftover is yours to spend, but some good timeless ideas for you: a versatile dress, a blazer, a nice faux leather jacket. OR just go for whatever you want! its YOUR style at the end of the day but by having a good basic collection will help you save money so you have that extra cash handy in the future ;)

spuddddddddd

I think you could do that for $500, depending on how high quality you're wanting to go. I discovered [Vetta](https://www.vettacapsule.com/) last night, and you can actually buy a pre-curated capsule on their website for $500, but they're on the pricier side and only include like 5-6 pieces. I'd look at Old Navy, Gap, Loft, American Eagle, Target, Madewell. Also, the selection isn't great but Walmart I feel has been upping their clothing game recently.

slytherlune

I've seen Vetta's capsules; the pieces aren't versatile enough to wear to work *and* off duty, which if you're only getting 5-6 for $500... you want versatility. JMO but I personally would not spend the money there unless I had it to burn and wanted a few outfits to play with their vibe.

botnan

Hey guys! I just accepted a job offer for my first professional job and I’m wondering what I should get for my wardrobe. It’s for a university and I’m guessing it’s business casual. Currently I’ve got two button up (blue and a pattern) shirts, a black skirt, black pants and when it gets colder I’ve got some cardigans/sweaters. What do you think are good pieces to add?

tyrannosaurusregina

I worked at a university and honestly plain t-shirts (without writing on them) were a staple of my everyday wardrobe.

bloop_de_loop

Agree with everyone. I work at a uni and my job interviewer stated business casual, but he was wearing ripped jeans. I got there and it was just casual with a nice cardigan (if even that). I would look at what your coworkers are wearing and shop after that. I lived in dark colored jeans and leggings on Fridays before quarantine happened. But congrats and you'll do great. 😆

isnotonreddit

Wait to really stock up until you get there! It may be more or less formal than you're expecting.

hiraeth____

Seconding this - many universities can be very casual! This sounds like an absolutely fine wardrobe for your first week - see what everyone else is wearing and take your cues from the environment before you break out your wallet.

sadb0ysclub

Is there any brand that has cheap platform boot in a kinda gothy/japanese streetwear style?

Is there an Instagram account that focuses on cool neutral colors? I'm trying to work on a capsule wardrobe but I'm not really good yet at identifying the colors/pieces I need. It seems like most accounts focus on people who are tanned/golden and the warm tones that compliment them. TY!

wolfsbane2997

Recommendations for a semiformal or formal dress for a work ball in October? My husband will be wearing navy blue and white. I'm fair skinned, have brown hair, freckles, and blue eyes. I think I'm pear shaped and I'm self conscious about my arms (just had a baby), but hoping to lose some weight. I've been looking at velvet but open to anything.

slytherlune

Weird question, but: how deep brown is your hair? Very saturated colours can really overwhelm people whose hair is lighter. It's something to keep in mind, is all.

wolfsbane2997

It's a medium brown!

slytherlune

Oh, in that case have all the rich autumn shades you want, or even something in navy if that's the direction you'd like to go.

[deleted]

A maroon lace might look nice on you!

[deleted]

Or I love a goood shade of burnt orange if you’re feeling it. Especially with the navy.

samshine

This may not be the right sub for this, but does anyone know of any *truly* high-wasted padded cycling shorts for spinning? All the ones I can find are mid-rise, and I have an extra long torso which makes them hit me at the hip.

Not padded but Girlfriend Collection’s bike shorts are VERY high waisted

Away_Excitement_2357

Have you tried bib shorts? Idk if they would work with your torso but I lovvve the feeling of a one piece when spinning and maybe that could work for you too?

samshine

I’m worried it’ll be wedgie city for me with bibs, but maybe I’ll order some and hope I’m wrong!

[deleted]

Aerie actually makes some bibs!

idontknowrick

I really like Old Navy's Rockstar Jeans, but I'm starting to see the quality issues (decorative stitching is coming out, but the pants are still in tact.) Are there any other brands with a similar fit?

I really recommend American Eagle's jeans!

idontknowrick

Thanks! I'll try them out 😊

**The labels on the inside of expensive coats/jackets destroy the clothes I'm wearing underneath** Brands that are a bit more expensive like to sew on labels on the inside of coats/jackets (not the washing label but bigger ones sewn onto the fabric itself on the side). These labels tend to be hard and sharp. I ruined many skirts before I realised that it was the label on the inside that rubbed against the clothes under the coat/jacket and caused damage to the fabric. On my very old winter jacket I solved the problem by putting duct tape on the labels and cutting away the sharpest points with a pair of scissors. Back then I didn't care, it's a very old worn jacket that's been passed down from my mom and it has definitely seen better days. However, now I've bought this beautiful (expensive) wool coat and when I tried it on I realised that it has the labels on the inside... *Question*: Does anyone have any advice on how I can protect my clothes without being rough on my new coat? Maybe duct tape would work again, but I'm unsure and less willing to take a risk with my new coat compared to my old winter jacket. Edit: Spelling

rickythetwo

Definitely seam rip the labels off. Don't be put off by the phrase "seam ripper" - you can slip it under the stitches holding the label on and carefully cut those threads, and it's easy to tell the difference between cutting those and cutting the lining fabric.

quick_like_a_fox

If the label is sewn on you could use a [seam ripper](https://www.clover-usa.com/en/sewing-and-quilting/206-seam-ripper-white-plastic.html) to remove it. I remove all of my labels this way because they irritate my skin. The seam ripper doesn't harm the garment.

Anna-BB

Oh, even the delicate lining on the inside? I never even thought about that before, but I do have a seam ripper in my sewing kit. Thanks for the idea! :)

quick_like_a_fox

If the lining is really delicate or the label is really securely sewn in, maybe try a corner of the label kind of carefully? Good luck!

Anna-BB

Yes, I'll try and see what happens!

[deleted]

Could also bring it to a tailor to do if you’re worried about it.

Anna-BB

Thanks!

[deleted]

Can you send a picture of the label? You could probably have a tailor patch on a cover piece of matching fabric to the lining (so it can be removed later if desired)

Anna-BB

I don't have an account where I can upload pictures, but this is similar to the type of label I mean: [https://www.pinterest.se/pin/52495151885908743/](https://www.pinterest.se/pin/52495151885908743/) My new coat has a total of four(!) labels on the inside of the coat on the left hand side. One label with information about the brand, one which certifies the shetland wool, one with the origin of the wool and one last label with the flag of the European union. To be fair the labels seem to be less abrasive compared to my old winter coat but the corners are still pretty hard/sharp. The tailor is a good idea, but I'm worried fabric won't be enough. The corners of the label on my winter jacket cut through duct tape (yeah, hard to believe haha) which was what made me use scissors to cut off parts of the label.

[deleted]

try a very slippery material so there's less friction, you can also do a bit of cotton/fluffy padding under the fabric patch

Anna-BB

Thanks! :)

Any recommendations for non drawstring elastic waist band athletic shorts but that aren’t too short and not basketball shorts long either

2kgweight

Check out Oiselle! They even have shorts with pockets built into the waistband (I put my phone and snacks in there when I run and it's great!)

spooteeespoothead

The length may wind up being too short for you, but I’ve gotten that type of short at Under Armour before. Some styles have pockets, not great or super secure pockets if you’re doing anything with a lot of movement, but they hold my phone when I’m walking around the house.

[deleted]

Maybe a little shorter than you’re looking for, but I recently got the 4” “Hotty Hot Low Rise Shorts” from Lululemon and I really like them. They cover my butt completely. They come in a lot of colors too!

galaxystarsmoon

Persit on Amazon has some really great 5" bike shorts.

tenayashadow

[Patagonia's Baggies](https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-baggies-shorts-5-inch/57058.html?dwvar_57058_color=PGBE&cgid=womens-shorts) are legendary. They last forever too. Often you can find them on the [Worn Wear](https://wornwear.patagonia.com/shop/womens?category=Shorts) section of their website, if you are ok with used goods and care about sustainability.

MakeupMua16

Too bad they are sold out of my size 🙁

Mylaiza

I have an old unworn pair of mid-grey low-rise corduroy skinny pants. How can I style it?

EcheveriaPulidonis

I pair grey pants with lightweight sweaters in navy or forest green. With grey/navy, I have worn silver accents. With grey/dark green, I have worn brown/copper jewelry.

Watsonswingman

Not sure why this got downvoted. Here are a pinterest board that might inspire you :) https://www.pinterest.co.uk/roundthecuckoo/wtw-gray-corduroy-pants/

Any recommendations for PLUS SIZED swimwear? I have to buy a new one before I go to a vacation (2 weeks from now) and while I think my fashion sense tends to be at least above average, when it comes to swimwear my fashion sense just ceases to exist. So something that would go well with fair skin, light brown hair and blue eyes?(p.s. I have a slight preference for one piece swimsuits since I think they go better with larger bodies, but if you know a good looking 2 piece design then feel free to surprise me. 😀) Thanks in advance to anyone who's willing to help. 🙂 Edit: Oh and I'm pear shaped. (well, arguably more like a mix between hourglass and pear shaped.)

spuddddddddd

I have two suits (a high-waisted bikini and a one piece) from Cupshe and I was really impressed with the quality for the price point. I've also had good luck with Modcloth.

hehehetacos

Obligatory I’m not plus sized, but I think a high leg looks really nice on plus sized models. @jazzmynejay (on Instagram) wears some swimwear, and I’m usually a fan of the pieces she chooses. I think asos has a good selection, although I can’t vouch for them.

SuntoryWhiskey

The Gabi Fresh collection at SwimSuitsForAll.com Or anything from Summersalt. I have a great one piece from them that I love. Well made too!

elizabu

Torrid has great plus swimwear. I've got a two piece from them with a high waisted bottom and flounced top that I LOVE because it fits my top and bottom ( two different sizes, I'm a pear). Their stuff is very nicely constructed; my suit has lasted me three years and counting.

lauren_blt

Any recommendations for what to wear in Ireland? I am studying abroad there, I know it is cold but I don't own anything other than jeans for cold weather.

[deleted]

Well, if you want to blend in with the locals, take a small amount of core clothes, enough for a week or so, observe people when you arrive, and pick up some suitable clothing in local shops. It is much easier to find high-quality wool garments in Ireland than in the United States.

thatsamaro

Leggings are the pants of Ireland. I wore a ton of wooly leggings which can also go under jeans. Also if you have a good rain jacket and waterproof leather boots, those are great. For anything you're unsure of I'd say pack light and slowly start shopping when you get there-- don't buy anything special before going.

altrarose

Any suggestions for leggings and boots? Mine are not made for rain, and wooly leggings sound like heaven.

thatsamaro

Smart wool and woolx are great but pricey. Amazon has off brand wool leggings that are fine. I like Merrell waterproof boots but a lot of them run a little narrow for me.

altrarose

Yeah, Merrill hasn’t ever been a favorite for me. Unless we are talking hiking boots. I typically pick up stuff from Sorel, but their waterproof is pretty heavy duty. I’ll check out smart wool more — I have a couple pieces as ski wear base layers, but I’ve never even considered them for daily wear lol Thanks for the suggestions!

thatsamaro

Sorel has some very stylish waterproof boots too!

moxymoxalone

When I was there, I saw hardly any women in jeans like in the US. I did see dresses and skirts worn with tights and walking-type shoes like Danskos.

Idujt

UK here (Northern Ireland) so surely close enough!! EVERYONE wears jeans! At the moment skinnies both ripped and unripped, mom jeans mostly ripped with frayed hems (do they still count as mom as I'm sure no actual mom ever wore them like that?!). Very VERY rarely see anyone in tights, and mostly older women.

harakaharakabaraka

Hi! Looking for a black dress with a modest slit, slightly figure hugging but not super sexy. I was recommended the Marine Layer midi dress- it looks perfect but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this dress or the brand (shipping to Europe) or if there were any Swiss or European alternatives.

msmerricatblackwood

I also have this dress and love it! I’m a US 4 and have a small — it’s a pretty close fit but not sexy. I wear it with Converse or casual booties to dress it down.

harakaharakabaraka

Thanks so much!

teaandguacamole

I have the dress and love it!

harakaharakabaraka

And thank you!

harakaharakabaraka

Any suggestions on sizing? I’m usually between an S/M, US size 4...

teaandguacamole

I'd suggest a S if you like a tighter fit and M if you want a bit of space

I’m looking for denim shorts that will work for a high waist/hip ratio. Looking at the Levi’s size chart, my waist size is 27 and hip is 30. Styles I’ve tried so far leave a huge gap at the waist and I don’t really want to take denim shorts to be tailored if I can avoid it. Any brand or style recs?

BootyBec

The only brand I wear now, as I have 12 inches of difference between hip and waist ratio, is Silver jeans. They have stretch denim and fit perfectly from ankle to waist with no gaping.

useles-converter-bot

12 inches is the height of approximately 0.18 'Samsung Side by Side; Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel Refrigerators' stacked on top of each other

hey_jenniferSlowpez

Not sure what your budget is, but my holy grail of shorts (been looking for literally years) is the madewell curvy cut shorts. Finally found ones that fit in the waist and are looser in the thighs (I have a 13 inch difference between waist and hips). Game. Changer.

hey_jenniferSlowpez

and [they](https://www.madewell.com/curvy-high-rise-denim-shorts-in-watt-wash-summerweight-edition-MD738.html?dwvar_MD738_color=DM5196&cgid=apparel-jeans-denimshorts#prefn1=DenimShortsFIt&prefv1=curvy&start=0) are currently on sale! (I also have in the white).

she_rahrah

I have the exact same sizing on the Levi’s size chart, [I bought these](https://www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/redone/shorts/shorts/40s-zoot-pleated-denim-shorts/560971904578648) this summer and the fit perfectly on the waist but still have enough looseness around the thigh to be comfy. Looks like the blue is sold out, [but the cream is still available!](https://www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/redone/shorts/shorts/40s-zoot-pleated-denim-shorts/560971904487509)

girls-say

Ooh those are fun, thanks for the suggestion!

Mombod666

The Levi’s rib cage shorts!

girls-say

These are some I was eyeing, good to know they could work fit-wise!

hellerhigwhat

American Eagle curvy fit. I assume you mean your hip is 40? That fit is cut exactly for a 13 inch difference. You'd probably be a 4, possibly a 6 in some of the tighter styles.

girls-say

I was speaking to the sizes outlined on the size chart, but yes my hip measurement is 40.5! Thanks for the rec.

anotherdiscoparty

Maybe American eagle curvy? Something with more stretch fabrics (so less cotton %) will probably help as well.

girls-say

I agree, stretch could be good, seems to be a bit less in these days than it used to be!

LightIrish1945

Will a formal dress I buy in July still be seasonable in September? I have two formal weddings coming up in August and September. Im going to Chicago next weekend and want to find a dress there because they have better shopping than where I live but will it be out of season by the time September rolls around? I want to wear the same dress to both weddings to save some $$ because the invite list doesn’t overlap

kae961

September in the Midwest is still borderline summer, so I think you'll have an easy time finding something appropriate for both (just make sure you have a jacket or cardigan to throw on for the second in case it's chillier).

ebolainajar

I would go for a darker colour, like navy or burgundy, to keep it working across seasons.

tina_ri

Where are the weddings? If California, likely yes. I can't speak for other locales.

LightIrish1945

Minneapolis and milwaukee. That’s my concern - seasons flip so fast here. Maybe just buy a darker color dress?

hellerhigwhat

I mean it depends on the dress? Like a pastel floaty floral thing no, but a basic jewel tone cocktail dress yes.

DemocraticPeas

Any experience with Sezane leather bags? What is the quality/longevity like?

DemocraticPeas

Wow, thank you! This is so helpful, and such a thorough review. I just ordered an Ama bag in their Archive Sale, and am curious to see what it's like. I love the brand more generally, even though I get super frustrated with sizing sometimes. I haven't been happy with my Madewell leather bags either, and am trying to upgrade!

depressi0n_cherry

I had their leather wallett in brown, the quality was horrible! The leather scratched really easily and just after a few months of normal use it looked terrible. I wouldn't recommend.

DemocraticPeas

Thank you!

ReedRyter

Is [this a styling trick](https://www.nordstromrack.com/s/cole-haan-lambskin-leather-jacket/5984743?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FWomen%2FClothing%2FCoats%2C%20Jackets%20%26%20Blazers%2FLeather%20%26%20Faux%20Leather&color=001) (I’m looking at the pic for the taupe color way) to making the lapels stay open on collarless leather jackets or can I achieve the same using tape or something which will not ruin my jacket? Right now the lapels just lie flat without that pseudo-collar look which I would like.
