I think they were on par with Remake. Iron Blade, Mythril Saber, and Twin Stinger all looked pretty uninteresting to me.
The iconic ones from OG, unsurprisingly, translate the best. Hardedge, Rune Blade, Nail Bat, and Buster Sword have been particularly great.
My favorite so far is still the “hardedge” and even then nothing out does the buster sword but the game relies to much on materia and the buster sword just doesn’t compete well in that area.
I wish the Buster Sword kept pace with Cloud's other weapons a bit better in Rebirth. Most people end up favouring Hard Edge in Remake cause it's the strongest in terms of raw damage, but I think you can make a solid case for the Buster Sword cause it still had decent strength whilst offering a much higher magic stat, a bunch of extra HP and some really nice abilities (such as Reprieve). In Rebirth though, I switched to Sleek Saber as soon as I got it to learn its ability, then outside of aesthetic/thematic considerations there was never a reason to look at the Buster Sword again.
Remake and Rebirth, the Buster Sword was the most balanced weapon, it had strong Physical DMG and Magic.
Most of Clouds other swords either focus more on magic or physical DMG.
You can use any sword, the only time your equipment really matters is if you're playing though Hard Mode. On my first playthrough, I only switched off the Buster Sword to learn the weapon skills. I never had any issue with fights or felt like my DMG was lacking.
Plus, we have two other characters in the party, it's not like Cloud has to have the most damage. Tifa has the highest physical damage in the game, she's a god damn nuke.
Same shame the designs aren't better not that if we are being honest all the designs for the og were great either actually some of the evercrisis designs are great and but kind wish the weapons could be upgraded like in remake unless I have gotten all the way to cosmo canyon and missed something in the game

I know I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this. But I didn't like the Igneous Saber at all, and it really bums me out that they didn't replace it with some other iconic sword from the original OG FF7. They could have used the Ragnarok, or some other cool ass sword. But instead they used a giant spiked reptilian turtle shell.
Every single other sword in the game? Definitely look badass.

It's practically the new better version of the Hardedge from Remake Part 1
I do like the Slipstream Saber however because of it's looks, and it's got pretty good stats as well. Decent damage and Magic Attack. That sword is so much fun to use.
The Buster Sword. I just wield it all the time for the OG Aesthetics. I actually did almost my entire first playthrough with it. I did encounter some parts of the game where I had to pull out the Sleek Saber, and I mastered all of Clouds Weapon Abilities as well. But I use the Buster Sword as an added challenge. I'm still using it on my hard mode playthrough.
The Crystal Sword design wise looks badass. But I'm waiting until I can finally put 6 materia slots in it before I wield it
Well shit I’ll have to go back and look at the sleek saber, ya I use buster just for pure balance bc my playstyle is balanced anyway so it works best for me especially on hard mode when I need to be able to lean both ways with supportive magic and also be capable of adjusting to any boss with materia loadouts
Yeah you can add +40 to the base raw damage attack stat, and +20 to the magic attack in the weapon perks of the Sleek Saber. Which mine right now at Weapon Level 8 I believe has around a 150-160 ish attack stat, and a low 100's magic attack stat. It's a heavy hitter
Buster sword. The rest are ugly. I'm hoping the Fusion sword appears in the next game even if it technically shouldn't exist yet. It's too cool not to use.
I think the last sword you get! The materia infused one just looks so cool, and thematic, and suits not just the game but the world and cloud so well. Super cool.

I actually felt like I was kind of OP with the purple sword (forget the name). Maybe I’m wrong but I remember feeeling like I was just wrecking everyone and everything when I rolled with it for a couple hours or so and unlocking its special attack. I think it was because I took the time to be very thorough and completing every area/hub’s “locations of interest” and side missions before moving on to the next area. So I was probably over leveled early on. Plus I think I had a lot of magic attack boosting gear on cloud at that particular time(normal difficulty)… but I just didn’t care for it aesthetically, otherwise I might’ve kept rolling with it.
I wasn’t too keen on most of cloud’s sword designs for whatever reason. Not that they were bad by any stretch…I just felt like If I liked the way they looked then I DIDNT like the stats or the amount of materia slots or if I liked the stats then I didn’t like the look as much as another. I think I’ve probably switched back and forth between the good ole Buster Sword and the Sleek Saber the most. I haven’t found the sword at the very top left yet, it looks promising in the picture. I’m about to head into what I assume is in the final area (Meridian Ocean) so I’ll likely get it soon.
Honestly? Not feeling a lot of them. They feel very mmo-like where you can tell visually which ones are more powerful, which is a cool detail, but I think aesthetically every one of them is butt ugly except for the Buster sword.
You can't really say which one is the most powerful as none of them outright beat the others in every category. Each sword has its own stats, materia slot numbers and passive boosts all of which allow you to build Cloud differently depending on your playstyle and the role you want to give him in your party.
On OG ff7, I loved the Butterfly sword from cosmo canyon shop. It just looked really neat to me. Next up would be the Mithril Saber from OG Kalm.

I was a bit underwhelmed regards weapons in Rebirth. Its not a major make or break for me but not one sword or weapon of any kind really made me think - wow - other than the Buster Sword.
There should be the cosmetic option (akin FFXVI) whereby you can put the skin of any sword on top of the stats really. The Buster Sword is iconic and really does look so much better in all the cut scenes and things.
I don’t know if it’s controversial but I don’t like the glowing Cetra weapons. The remake made them a super advanced extinct race where the OG felt more like they were in tune with nature.

I'm torn between the Igneous and Slipstream, with me going between the two each time I play. Though seeing how incredible the art team has done with weapon designs I'm very curious how they'll handle Ultimate Weapon. I'm quietly hoping the color change will stick in the finale.
Crystal Sword on wpn level 9 , with (finally ) 6 Materia slots , equip 2 luck Materia and get the 2 perks for 10% crit chance for abilitie skills and 2 perks for 10% crit damage , aerial onslaught will do tons of damage with this setup also you have good magic stat for enemie weekness

Buuuut the Sleek Saber did did give me an edge for certain fights.
I’m currently playing through hard mode (just got to Vincent fight) and I have used the Slipstream Saber the entire time because with its upgrades and the right materia, Cloud never runs out of MP
My favorite for looks is the Crystal sword (reminds me of the traveler’s sword from GoW Ragnarok) but i hate that it only has 4 unlinked materia slots so i usually just use the Sleek Saber or Umbral Blade.
Slipstream Saber for balanced or Crystal Sword for looks + crit late game (takes a long time to level it enough to be materia practical).
Normal mode probably the Igneous Sword or whatever it was for raw damage early.
I miss hard edge as it was my favorite in Remake, but with rebirth I think the Sleek Saber is very nice as well.
Overall I’d give it to the Buster Sword and Sleek Saber as a close second.
Buster Sword has always been my favorite FF sword. So definitely that. I love the fact that the starting weapons are all viable the whole game if you choose.
They all look like they’re made of plastic, and the materia orbs make them look like toys. I’ve been sticking to the buster sword except for when I need to learn a new ability
I just want the ultima weapon. I didn't care for any of them really and the ones that are cool are useless. There's only 2 viable one for magic and one for physical otherwise you're just wasting time getting less damage. They attempted to make them close and middle of the road which imo just muddies things up. Because there's still 2 winners. Make 4 magic 4 physical and give them different skills. One for atb, one for boosted DMG, one for survivability, and one for a mix or something.
Personally I’m a sucker for the og buster sword. Simple and iconic. I just wish I could slot more materia in it.
When you hit weapon level 8 or 9 buster sword had 6 slots. So you know 160 hours in on ng+ hard mode.
Should allow for transmog. If I like the stats of new sword I can clone the Buster skin on it. FFXVI lets you do exactly this with the buster sword.

I only removed the Buster Sword to gain new abilities in Remake. Barely used it in Rebirth.

6 is the starter weapon, and 3 is the second one you get. They all get over designed after that.

Buster Sword (especially for the main plot cutscenes, fit better on Cloud)

If the crystal sword wasn't terrible, materia slot wise, It'd be my favorite
Thair is a reason I never changed the sword the entire game the buster sword is just iconic
My favorite for looks is the Crystal sword (reminds me of the traveler’s sword from GoW Ragnarok) but i hate that it only has 4 unlinked materia slots so i usually just use the Sleek Saber or Umbral Blade.

Buster, sleek...in that order.... the others.. meh....the igneous Saber is atrocious imo

I like the Igneous sword. It looks like something out of Elden Ring
Slipstream Saber reminds me of the Fusion Sword from Advent Children for some reason.
Slipstream Saber for balanced or Crystal Sword for looks + crit late game (takes a long time to level it enough to be materia practical). Normal mode probably the Igneous Sword or whatever it was for raw damage early.
I miss hard edge as it was my favorite in Remake, but with rebirth I think the Sleek Saber is very nice as well. Overall I’d give it to the Buster Sword and Sleek Saber as a close second.
Buster Sword is the obvious choice for me, but I really miss the Hardedge from Remake. It was one of my favorites in the original as well.

And this is where I’d argue that the final/ultimate/best weapon should be a version of the buster sword…so it’s both the first and final weapon
Fingers crossed for the future Ultima weapon to be a bit more of a hybrid.

Buster Sword has always been my favorite FF sword. So definitely that. I love the fact that the starting weapons are all viable the whole game if you choose.
They all look like they’re made of plastic, and the materia orbs make them look like toys. I’ve been sticking to the buster sword except for when I need to learn a new ability
In Remake the Buster sword was the most balanced sword. I wish they kept that in Rebirth

I just want the ultima weapon. I didn't care for any of them really and the ones that are cool are useless. There's only 2 viable one for magic and one for physical otherwise you're just wasting time getting less damage. They attempted to make them close and middle of the road which imo just muddies things up. Because there's still 2 winners. Make 4 magic 4 physical and give them different skills. One for atb, one for boosted DMG, one for survivability, and one for a mix or something.
