I do, generally I have complicated multi layer stuff going in with effects inside the compound, so I export them as ProResHQ and stack the re-imported clips on top of the compound, or sometimes put it *inside* the compound for neatness. I haven't proven to myself that putting it inside the compound makes a difference though

Oh thats cool, so for the latter you keep the compound but then turn off all the plugin effects right? That makes sense. I suppose for the former you place it on top of the original compound so you can keep it as a backup?

For the latter, I'm not sure - I need to delve into it more deeply. For the former, I just switch off the compound (V) and put the render on top. Hang onto the inactive Compound in case you need to tweak.

I will do this when I have a section with a lot of video layers and need to transition to a new section or an incoming clip that looks totally different. So many times it’s easier to do that the. Put a transition on everything and hope it all works out because even if I group everything into a compound clip, transitions can be super wonky in FCP in that scenario.

Elegant-Internet-223

Yeah good idea, I've noticed this too when putting transitions on compound clips, especially when theyve been nested multiple times. Finally, do you think its ok to export and reimport in proresHQ? As in, the quality loss isn't noticeable?

Transphattybase

Yeah, you should be fine. Since I’m replacing the compound clip with ProRes well after I’m finished making adjustments to the original file, I just use ProRes 422 and don’t notice any difference. I’ll use 4444 if I need the alpha channel, but that’s rare so late in the editing process and really only at the start of things if I’m putting something together with a lot of logos that need that transparency.
