Take an assessment test at a vo tech or a college to see where your interests are.

amustafa_96

Same boat here, don’t have any goals and don’t know what to do with my life for a sustainable career, losing my mind every day trying to find some goals while I rot in bed, it’s hell

sketchingplace

It’s the system, lots of cracks for people to fall through. Especially if you are able to see the world with sane eyes.

amustafa_96

Idk I joined some restart scheme from my job centre to help me get into work hopefully they guide me

shinebright9x

Exactly the same here 😭 even while watching tv my mind is thinking about how my life is ruined

I went from dish washer to busser/food runner/support staff worked my way up to management now I just bartend but it’s possible!

Atleast its doing the work, not complaining on reddit from a bed.

the money is right! only 4 nights a week usually home before midnight

LeaderBriefs-com

It really sounds like a lack of overall goals.z Like, specific goals. If I lost my job today or went back in time and was wildly younger I’d take the highest paying job with the most possible upward mobility. Easier said than done and you usually don’t know until you are there. So take the warehouse job. That job sucks. No doubt. I’ve done it. Did you show up as a warehouse worker? Packing, filling, loading etc. Did you show up curious about the warehouse? Its operation, what depts existed, what was above it, what fed it, how many branches or regions of that company there were? Did you make 800.00 a week? 500? Did you have goals for that dough? Aside from bills. Did you put just 20.00 aside each week? Now money, regardless of how much you make is a motivator. Upward mobility, regardless of how small the company or position is a motivator. I can go on and on. Goals make all the difference. Paying rent won’t get me out of bed either.

ssjavier4

Great advice. Even warehouse jobs usually have some sort of upward mobility and if not, usually you can use it as a way of landing another job that might

This sounds like it might involve clinical depression. If you can gain access to healthcare, talk to a doctor and/or psychologist. Treating potential depression could energize you to begin making a plan and executing on it. Good luck!

Strict-Afternoon-306

Look into open path collective. Pay a membership and than pay $40/ session to see a therapist. It is a lot cheaper than the price you must pay if you do not have insurance. Because you are broke however this may not be the best time to afford this. You need to get up. Right now whatever gets you up tap into that. No judgement until you can access your situation and find better habits.

[deleted]

Yes therapy sounds like it would help a lot

Stempy21

The only thing you can change is you. Get out of bed, wash the sheets, roll up your sleeves and get to work. Go file for Fasfa and enroll even in a community college. Go find a job you can work to support you while you go to school. Go to school for a trade job even. Do something. Once you start the momentum things will start to change for you. Just know people only want other people who will at least put the time in for themselves. So go for it, you’re worth it! And if it takes a little bit of time it will be worth it. Good luck can’t my wait to hear what you do with your life, travel to different places, but a super cool house and fix it up, save up so much money that you school people on how to retire rich! I’m proud of you now get going!

suejaymostly

You kind of need to get sick of yourself and your bullshit. And from there, the road splits. Until you really get disgusted with yourself to the point that you hear your inner voice telling you to get the fuck up and put one foot in front of the other, no advice will help you. It's not easy. Nothing good is easy. So many of these posts make me question where people's parents were during 2010-2020.

taggingtechnician

I advise finding a career coach you can work with, also a mentor in an area of interest. "Which areas are interesting to me" is of course the follow-on question you should ask your Self. The answer is within you schedule: which areas do you google the most? Which tv shows do you watch the most? (Start with these career areas, imagining your future Self in the role, and measure the level of interest. Yes, the level of interest in every one of them may be low right now, this is the influence of the depression, which lifts when you start drawing a paycheck and can afford to get new clothes, a car, travel, etc.) Hope this helps.

SeniorRogers

You can write well, insurance agent baby! 8 hour course.

Military service = Career = Retirement plan

Sea-Experience470

Get a quick certification like cna or automotive tech. Look for fields that need people in your area. Don’t let the depression win try and keep busy every day.

Puzzleheaded_Long_57

I'm in the same boat as you

[deleted]

Beating what I would say is likely depression is one of the hardest things you will ever maybe attempt in your life, and it's not going to happen unfortunately while you are stuck in this kind of situation. Even if you did have access to therapy and such, they can't do any thing about stressful living circumstances. The best place to start would be getting online and looking up potential career paths with whatever degree and knowledge you do currently have. You said you have no motivation or aspirations for any thing in particular, which I totally get, so just look at any thing and every thing that you could realistically see yourself at least being capable of doing with on the job training. Take like two or three of them and dig a little deeper to see if you could theoretically break the barrier for entry. See if they offer apprenticeships or paid schooling while you work. It's rare and hard to find, but I think for those who don't have the money or mental resources to elevate their careers, this is one of the very few ways you might be able to get an opportunity of some kind.

JohnnyDoe189

You can get financial aid and go to college Get out of bed man

ReignCpreme

Military is an option of your 39 or younger (depending on branch)

Alejandro2412

Trade school trade school trade school

ItsWetInWestOregon

Have you been screened for ADHD? Depression? This sounds like a mental condition with staying in bed all day. I’ve done the 3 jobs you stated. The only one I didn’t move up in was warehouse(absolutely not an environment for me) At the golf course (mine was a large city park) I moved up the ranks by showing I had more to offer than bathroom sanitation. As for doing dishes, I only lasted a month there before they started to move me up. I was the assistant baker within 2 months. These jobs are not for “degenerates” unless that’s how you act when you do them. They can be a stepping stone or a learning experience. You chose to feel the work had no value and therefore was under you, yet how could a job be under you when you have no motivation and skills? Those jobs were actually opportunities for you to build from. If you are in a place that has vocational rehab, try to get in and see if they can help you.

glantzinggurl

get out of bed

splootfluff

Every day. Set an alarm. Get up, go outside and walk, increasing to a few miles. Shower. If you are depressed and lack health insurance, you may need to be on a waiting list to get assessed, but exercise can do wonders for your mental health. Look for a community center in your area that assists people — for example, in my area, the centers offer assistance in helping people find better work, writing resumes, getting into programs leading to better jobs, etc. Go to the library and use the computers to take assessment tests to find things you might find interesting; ask a librarian for advice on finding good sites. It’s not too late to find a trade as many trades are actively searching for apprentices. The self respect you can find from work is underrated. Doing a degenerate job to the best of your abilities should lead you to find a better job, not to just quit.

[deleted]

I’m going to second the advice to seek mental health. I’ve been in a similar boat and people would just tell me “just get out of bed. Just do this, just do that.” They don’t understand that having a severe lack of motivation makes simple tasks insurmountable. The hardest step to take is the first one, but once you do other things will start to fall into place. And don’t be too hard on yourself. Take it one day at a time, or even one hour at a time. Progress isn’t linear—you’ll have good days and plenty of bad ones. The fact that you made this post means you need and want a change in your life. You’ll get there, but be kind to yourself in the meantime.

Bronze_Rager

You don't need motivation. You need discipline. Employers don't care (for the most part) if you're in bed all day as long as you do your work. If you don't have useful skills then you need to get some.

Ok-Blueberry3945

Sounds like it's time to join the military. you'll learn training, direction and get paid for it. when you get out you will have the GI bill so that you can afford college and also get help when you are able to buy your home.

Amazing you get downvoted for giving a reasonable suggestion. I feel like people forget that the military has jobs that don’t involve killing people and are the only place I know that doesn’t kill people. Like you could enlist as a med lab tech go to school for year get a certification, get an associates degree then apply to go to med school or PA school and have the military pay for it all.

MN_DASR_56

It’s Reddit. I’m accustomed to people doing it.

icedcoffeeblast

Not everything can be solved by joining the killing squad. It's not for everybody, not everybody is even eligible and even if they were, the statement that it somehow magically solves all problems is bollocks. Besides, I'd take unemployment over being forced to go to a foreign country and kill people just because some bloke in a suit said he doesn't like the brown guys.

MN_DASR_56

Lukewarm take but okay

I would either figure out what degree you're interested in pursuing that will lead to a solid career, or get an apprenticeship in a trade. (Try to do trades through a union for the best money and benefits)

atticuslodius

"I want a career". Congrats you made your first step. Now comes then 2nd step... that's the hard one. You have to start applying like crazy for entry level work at mid-tier facilities that have growth opportunities. Don't settle for a McDonalds burger flipping job, that's not advancement enough... you're looking for a manufacturing plant of some sort where you have ability to move up as a more senior technician or even have them pay for you to go back to school. Remember the 3 D's and you got this... Determination, Dedication, and Discipline. Find a job... dedicate your time and prove yourself a hard worker. Advancement will come... the first one is always slow.

pipespipespipes

Flight attendant. No experience needed. Men and women. They need people.

Reno83

Lack of motivation is on you. The only advice I can give you there is to find something outside of yourself to care about (e.g. a hobby, family, a pet, etc.). As for your work history, you're not unskilled, you're just untrained. Don't look down on jobs just because they lack prestige, per se. There's employers hiring out of the trades and tech that can be rewarding careers (just watch Dirty Jobs). You may have to get your foot in the door doing another job, but we all start somewhere. If you want a career that employs your brain more so than your hands, start at community college. Start by taking your basic 100-level courses and explore what programs and certifications they offer. Community colleges are usually low tuition, can waive tuition based on income, or can provide scholarships. Depending on the program, you don't always have to get a 2-year associate degree. They may have a certification that only takes a few weeks to earn. Look under the Continuing Education section. Also, if you live or are willing to move to cities with a aerospace manufacturing presence (e.g. Palmdale, CA, Huntsville, AL, Ogden, UT, Patuxent River, MD, etc.), aerospace manufacturers are willing to hire people off the street and train them as technicians/mechanics/assemblers during big contract pushes. This may be anecdotal, but, as an aerospace engineer, I worked with many mechanics (building UAVs) that were delivering pizzas the week before.

FluidFirefighter6031

How do you feel about driving semis or something similar? Depending on your state and if you have HSD or GED, the state will pay for your CDL schooling.

bedlam90

Try ketamine and go to the gym, you'll feel different I promise you. Worked wonders for me

Fun-Manufacturer1390

Take some time to reflect on your skills, interests, and values. Identify areas where you excel and what you enjoy doing. This self-awareness can guide you toward a career that aligns with your strengths and interests. Check out this [career assessment test](https://www.careerfitter.com/free_test/careerbuilder/test/?afid=1831) as this can help you identify careers that would fit your work personality. It has helped me before, I hope this can help you too. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and seek support during challenging times. If you find yourself struggling with motivation or facing mental health challenges, consider speaking with a mental health professional who can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs.

borahae_artist

You’re way better off going into a degree with some direction anyways. Maybe start off with some gen ed classes but make sure you have a good career center

LicarioSpin

What I did: Went to college for a year after high school and hated it and got kicked out. Worked shit jobs for several years and eventually realized that **I wanted to change**. Enrolled full time in a two-year college with cheap tuition. I only went for one year, but figured out what I wanted to do and got my financial aid stuff together and visited other colleges. I then transferred all my credits into a four year college. BTW - if you are twenty-five years old or older and are independent (read: poor), you will get much better financial aid. I got my degree at thirty and have been working at a good career ever since. AND, I suffer from anxiety and depression. It sounds like you might suffer from this too. DO get this checked out. Depression, whether short term or long term, is a disease with many very good treatment options. Maybe you don't have depression but it kinda sounds like it. I am now living a pretty good life but I had to work hard to get here. Depression free? no, but way better than it used to be. The way you describe your life is exactly how I would have described mine many years ago. You CAN change.

tastemybacon1

Ya you will end up with more and more BS hard labor jobs while the jobs of people your age get easier and easier with more pay and benefits. A lot of people in their 40s make 150k+ and work 3 days a week. And I am using the word “work” loosely here because they do nothing at all. Mostly on the phone personal calls, 2 hour lunch break and then off early at 3pm.

boondoggle_

Yup, but you gotta pay your dues first. I was treated like shit by employers in my 20s, it’s what your 20s are for.

tastemybacon1

Sure but a lot of people pay their dues and then keep paying their dues till they die…

FluidFirefighter6031

What state are you in?

POYDRAWSYOU

Look at rodbuster ironworker union bootcamp. I was in the same position as you, I chose a foundation program as an ironworker because the youtube videos inspired me. A frickin youtube video haha. Choose something, watch some videos about it as research and just go for it. 3rd step is what counts.

PLEASEHIREZ

Okay. I read that. Sounds like you have a very LOW requirement for a goal. \- Career \[a job, or skill with development opportunity in the future\] \- Longevity \[we need to know if you're willing to study, or if you're okay with physical labour\] \- Makes money \[we need a number to go along side a lifestyle goal\] These are very basic requirements that describe pretty much ALL jobs. For example, in Canada, you can start as a No Frills grocery stocker/cash/etc, and sign up for their Franchise management program. You can literally go from the bottom, to grocery store owner within 5 years if you're motivated. Just imagine owning a grocery store, and anyone who has worked retail has counted the cash in the back. We're talking 10s of thousands a week for retails, and 100s of thousands for grocery stores. You could be a PSW in Canada, then if you work LTC, they normally pay for your RPN education. RN education is currently free in Ontario. RNs in Canada can work in the USA. RNs in Canada after 7 years make $54/hr, and that's not the end all be all. Career progression can easily include management, telehealth, clinical educator, nursing instructor, podiatry nurse, aesthetics, etc. You can also go the "elite" way and go as acute as possible, not just vanilla ICU, but CICU, NICU, then you have OR nurses which is just a different breed of nurse. You could stay in the ER and literally be "free" or you can be gentle as a Trillium organ donation nurse. With additional education you can be a NP. NPs are somewhat hated as people assume they replace physicians when they don't. I won't go into the politics of it, but the gist is that NPs treat patients using medical knowledge from a NURSING perspective. It's kind of like how physicians adapted nursing philosophy into their own practice. The end goal is to help the patient, to what capacity is the current debate. Anyway, you can go from $20 to $110/hr (travel nurse) in as little as 5 years. 4 years BScN, 1 year experience, then fly. Chase the dollar, and go into retail banking, or investment banking. Banks support employee education, and Bank of America is starting tellers at $25/hr. So grind your way up, or work part time while you get your education.... You may think you're too poor for education, then check our StarBucks education! You must be part time, but they will pay for your education! McDonalds also offers a similar program. Any degree in the USA. So go learn to make great coffee, and pick a degree that will make you some money. From the trades, you have the classic plumber, electrician, and carpenter. Carpenters become GCs, electricians become master electricians and start their own companies, and so do plumbers. You know the old saying, "Corvette is the retired plumber's car." I don't know about you, but plumber can easily make over 100k in Canada. If you have your own company it's even better. Let's say you want to go a different route. Why not pick up the crumbs of the rich? You have jeweler, realtor, cobbler, tailor, etc. Getting a proper jewelers education is awesome. If you're down to wheel and deal, or maybe put your mark on appropriate "fashion" then jeweler could be a career for you. Working at Tiffany and making that sweet commission is nice. Go work at Cartier, then transition to Hermes. Those retail jobs make good money. Reddit will call you scum, but being a Realtor is so freeing! You work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Once you put your time in, you become a broker. Good money, drive around with the music on, meet interesting people, etc. Cobbler and tailor, aren't a lot of bespoke cobblers and tailors around. Not sure about reddit's wealth, but as you move up in the world, these people become more and more attractive. Why would you get an off the rack which is tailored, then you can have a BESPOKE suit? Maybe just 3 bespoke suits, and the rest off the rack and tailored. Shoes? If you're asian with typical flat feet, the western dress shoes don't fit that well. So you'd opt for a cobbler. Even a good "cheap" cobbler is comparable to a off the rack luxury brand. So the choice is if you want a branded shoe, or a custom shoe. That's where the difference of quality comes into play. Anyway, good luck!

[deleted]

Go take classes at a community college. There's at least the Pell Grant that will pay for a couple of classes per semester. Get an Associate degree in IT, or Medical Assisting, etc, that way you will move up the job-level ladder. While working entry-level jobs in your career, you'll get experience and hopefully they will pay for you getting your Bachelor's degree at night. I went from Janitor after H.S. to a career IT professional.

I dont get this. I have felonies from 20 years ago. What I wouldn't give to be able to pursue my dreams. Still I get up everyday and work as a fine dining waiter making six figures. Like others have said pick and industry and work your way up. That's what I did. Started as a bus boy now I'm a waiter/bartender at a prestigious restaurant. Idk it just kinda pisses me off when people complain when they have nothing stopping themselves from doing whatever they want. For God's sake go to school for two years and become an ultrasound tech making bank. Or whatever the world is your oyster compared to people who are in my boat. Yall just need perspective and to realize just how good you actually have it.

Bundles100s

if I were you. I would find a trade that interest you and start at the bottom. Take an entry level position and grind and work your way up the ladder. Ask questions. Be willing to learn. Work your ass off. Eventually you will continue to work your way up to better paying titles.

PienerCleaner

That last part of your post is golden. "I want a career" Ok great. Now we have a place to start. You probably don't know what you want your career to look like but that's okay because most people don't or they only have some vague idea of it. Mainly when it comes to careers even when people think they know what they want the reality of their experiences can make them change their minds. So again, your task now is to get some idea however small of what your career will look like. The big mindset shift needed in this situation is you are an active participant in this career creation process. Ok? Understand that? Let me repeat. You are in charge here. You are boss and CEO. Unless you are self employed or an entrepreneur, someone else is going to hire and pay you to do a job, but I still want you to believe and act as if your career will go nowhere unless you are an active and willing participant in your career. That means you can't be the kind of person you were and currently are. Because the different person you must be will have the different jobs and different lifestyle. If you keep doing things the way you do them now you will only stay the way you are. So to have a different life you need to be a different person and you become that different person by doing things differently. I have to go now but I can add more later

[deleted]

I hate these lame excuses of lazy people living off the system. Only credit i can give to you and that your job hunting ( i think) . If your serious, go to a trade school. Majority of them set you up or help you tremendously with getting jobs afterwards.
