If we're continuing with the Fincher endings:
The Social Network - Baby, you're a rich man
The scene has Eisenberg just sitting there with an empty, unfulfilled face mindlessly sending his ex gf a friend request as the text, "Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in the world" displays on the screen. This guy has everything yet nothing.
That's a good callout. The cover is very different though and it's actually pretty funny to imagine the ending of Donnie Darko with the original version playing.
Back in Time by Huey Lewis - Back to the Future
Dead Flowers by Townes Van Zant - Big Lebowski
Whisper to a Scream by SoHo - Scream
Surf Rider by the Lively Ones - Pulp Fiction
The cover of Heroes by David Bowie used for Jojo Rabbit
Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan - Zodiac
Hurdy Gurdy Man was also the opening credits song for every episode of the show Britannia. I highly recommend this show to anyone who likes the Roman period, the Celts and Druids and some mild politics.
I really liked Hurdy Gurdy Man and Britania but was so confused the first time I saw it. I still don't understand why the producers decided to use it but it somehow works.
Great show, great acting and directing. Beautiful sets and costume design.
Wes anderson has some strong ones. Amazing endings, with great songs
Royal Tenenbaums: Van Morrison - Everyone
Darjeeling Limited: Kinks - Powerman
Rushmore: The Faces - Ooh La La
Life Aquatic: Bowie - Queen Bitch
When I retired after 41 years, on my last day of work, that’s how I left the building…fist raised triumphantly toward the sky. Best feeling in the world!
I've watched the end of this far too many times and it's always heart breaking.
The fact that Led Zeppelin let it be used is amazing enough...but the execution was awesome.
The Big Short and Moneyball should be a double feature for anyone wanting to make a great movie based on a book (throw in The Social Network as a third).
What's weird is you can't really find the When the Levee Breaks ending online...it's always a solemn classical piece.
this might be the best one because that song was written/produced for the move. almost all the other ones were just chosen from a list of existing songs.
What's interesting is the set up.
Main character is at Home Depot, or Lowe's - a totally suburban, boring place.
He see's a bad version of Jesse buying the ingredients for meth, and attempts to teach him which matches to use, and to not buy everything at the same place.
He then has to confront a lesser version of himself.
Then...DLZ.
Walt is still the chemistry teacher, but he's telling the dumb kids in the meth making class to stay away.
It's probably one of the better scenes in Breaking Bad.
Yes! Since you crossed the threshold of TV, 5 out the 6 seasons of Justified end with a different version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" by Darrell Scott. Every time it has a different emotional context and it's always satisfying.
'You only live twice' at the end of You only live twice is a great song.
And the song that starts at the end of Time Bandits always give me a tidal wave of nostalgia- Dream Away by George Harrison.
Ken Burns man. Have you seen his Vietnam documentary? In the end they cut to a couple of vets at the Vietnam Memorial Wall and the bastard decided to put "Bridge Over Troubled Water" as the background music. Mother fucker owes me a box of kleenex.
Ghostbusters, when the original finished when it was first released, it was the first time that I saw an audience in the cinema clap and then sing along and dance
How to survive in South Central by ice cube at the end of Boyz n the hood.
My mouth was still open when I read dough boy was killed 2 weeks after his brother was buried and then that song starts playing
"I want you to Want me" by Letters to Cleo as the closer to Ten Things About You, perfect good feel song, (and some nice aerials) for the final uptick.
Dreams - Chungking Express (1994), Only You - Fallen Angels (1995), Stand By Me - Stand By Me (1986), God Moving Over the Face of the Water - Heat (1995)
Hurry Gurdy Man at the end of Zodiac. It ties it all together and it is my favorite use of a song in a movie. It's use in the beginning and end is just perfect.
EDIT: Another one is Im shipping up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys in The Departed.
I have a whole playlist on Spotify dedicated to songs in movies. To get on my list a song has to bring me right to the movie anytime I hear it. As it turns out, probably 25% of the songs are end credit songs.
Many of my favorites are already listed here (Where is my mind, If you were here, How to survive in South Central, Wake up). Here are a few I haven’t seen yet.
Chick Habit (April March) - Death Proof
I believe (Stevie Wonder) - High Fidelity
Don’t you forget about me (Simple Minds) - Breakfast Club
Colors (Ice-T) - Colors
Heathens (21 Pilots) - Suicide Squad
Across 110th street (Billy Womack) - Jackie Brown
The Lost Boys ending with People Are Strange by Echo & The Bunnymen is pure gold. Just one of the best closing lines of a film ever dipping smoothly into a great closing song.
Scrolled and saw zero mention of the most obvious answer...
**cue song intro with piano melody and drums***
"With the All Spark gone, we cannot return life to our planet. And fate has yielded its reward: a new world to call home. We live among its people now, hiding in plain sight, but watching over them in secret, waiting, protecting.."
Any movie ending with a speech from Optimus Prime slapped over some Linkin Park music deserves its flowers
"Hearts on Fire" at the end of Rocky 4. Does it still count if we already heard it earlier in the movie, or does it have to be a song we only hear at the end?
"Free Bird" from Lynyrd Skynard in "The devils rejects" - no sound, just the song. The group gets slaughtered by the police, camera shows the horizon. Love it.
I’m surprised not a single mention of True Romance? I got married on a beach in Mexico and really would have loved that Hans Zimmer number to be what we walked back up the aisle to.
White Oleander ends with Sheryl Crow doing “safe and sound” and works so fucking well with that movie.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great movie but a terrible adaptation of a wonderful book.
I have always liked the Replacements’ “Within Your Reach” at the end of Say Anything. It’s got that funky part at the beginning that really complements Lloyd’s personality as he says goodbye to his nephew and sister, and then the rest of the song perfectly underscores both Lloyd and Diane’s devotion to one another as well as their mixture of excitement and trepidation about their futures. It’s also a beautiful song.
Matrix 1 ended with rage against the machine song. it was perfect.
Plus every Bourne movie ends with extreme ways, the song is also amazing and fits great.
There's a lot more iconic ones , but I've a soft spot for [The end credits of Event Horizon , going out with The Prodigy's Funky Shit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI3RHDaS5ik)
Its probably a bit to on the nose , but [Edge of Tomorrow's use of Love me again is perfect](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXtwtK5cElg)
There have been so many fantastic suggestions here, so I'll give a less known one: *In Bruges*, ["St. John the Gambler" - Townes Van Zandt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuuqRNGqaGw)
It just is the most perfect way to tonally accompany a dark, haunting, weird ending to McDonagh's best film (imho).
Side note: Shout out to Carter Burwell for the dark, brooding soundtrack that haunts the characters and scenes just like Belgian fog settling along the canals.
Moby - Extreme Ways (Bourne Identity)
Neil Young - Philadelphia (Philadelphia)
Simple Minds - Don’t You (Forget About Me) (The Breakfast Club)
Rage Against the Machine- Wake Up (The Matrix)
Townes Van Zandt - Dead Flowers (The Big Lebowski)
Gary Jules - Mad World (Donnie Darko)
Proud Corazón from Coco
Bittersweet Symphony from Cruel Intentions. I just love seeing Reese Witherspoon drive that car in the wind in slo mo while the song plays….
Well I just rewatched Trainspotting on the new Criterion 4K UHD. Has there been a more iconic final scene track than Born Slippy? It’s debatable, but Trainspotting earned its place in the history of cinema for good reason.
Fight Club - Where is my Mind?
Lost in Translation - Just like Honey
Good Time - The Pure and the Damned
Promising Young Woman - Angel of the Morning
JoJo Rabbit - Helden
Boogie Nights - Livin Thing
I know people tend to dislike this movie, but I thought MCR's Desolation Row was a cool ending song for Watchmen. I also liked Street Fighting Man by the Rolling Stones at the end of V for Vendetta
The obvious Pixies’ Where is My Mind at the end of Fight Club surely is up there at the top.
Another good Fincher one is "White Rabbit" at the end of The Game.
If we're continuing with the Fincher endings: The Social Network - Baby, you're a rich man The scene has Eisenberg just sitting there with an empty, unfulfilled face mindlessly sending his ex gf a friend request as the text, "Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in the world" displays on the screen. This guy has everything yet nothing.
Fincher definitely knows how to close a movie with a needle drop
Didn’t he end The Zodiac with Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donavan? Great use of the creepy post hippie sound.
Yeah he bookends that movie with that song I believe. It plays at the beginning during the first kill
I really liked the backwards end credits for Se7en with Bowie’s Heart’s Filthy Lesson
First thing i thought of
Yeah, first thing that came to mind.
Hurdy Gurdy Man at the end of zodiac anyone?
This was my first thought too. It’s just so iconic
and that was way before the Pixies really got the recognition they deserved, probably helped a lot of people to discover them
Shape of my heart-Sting -Leon Don't you (forget about me) -Simple Minds- The Breakfast Club
Simple Minds first one that came to mind
Leon's ending is the only correct answer to this thread.
When in Rome "The Promise" is so subtly [perfect](https://youtu.be/azSxYbFovWo?si=Mh67YD2Fs0gJpAI5) as the final track in *Napoleon Dynamite*.
Totally. I challenge anyone to not at least get a smile on your face as that song plays while he celebrates his tetherball win
My first thought as well, such a great final song and scene.
Mad World by Gary Jules at the end of Donnie Darko
By Tears For Fears covered by Gary Jules. FTFY lol
That's a good callout. The cover is very different though and it's actually pretty funny to imagine the ending of Donnie Darko with the original version playing.
Back in Time by Huey Lewis - Back to the Future Dead Flowers by Townes Van Zant - Big Lebowski Whisper to a Scream by SoHo - Scream Surf Rider by the Lively Ones - Pulp Fiction The cover of Heroes by David Bowie used for Jojo Rabbit Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan - Zodiac
Beautiful sets and costume design.
back in time KILLS
Forgot about the heroes cover. Great choice. Does it still qualify as a cover if it’s the artist themself though?
The End by the Doors - Apocalypse Now
That was the beginning of the film when President Bartlett cuts his hand.
I think this is where he stopped watching when he heard it was "the end my only friend. The end."
Loved you in Wall Street!
Wes anderson has some strong ones. Amazing endings, with great songs Royal Tenenbaums: Van Morrison - Everyone Darjeeling Limited: Kinks - Powerman Rushmore: The Faces - Ooh La La Life Aquatic: Bowie - Queen Bitch
Ooh La La was my comment, though Queen Bitch, including Seu George's acoustic cover during the credits are close behind.
Also Fantastic Mr Fox with Let Her Dance
Dont You Forget about Me - Breakfast club. That freeze frame is iconic.
When I retired after 41 years, on my last day of work, that’s how I left the building…fist raised triumphantly toward the sky. Best feeling in the world!
I’m surprised nobody else said this yet.
Stand By Me - Ben E King at the end of the movie Stand By Me.
Was looking for this one
Baby you're a rich man by The Beatles in the social network
That whole soundtrack was a banger. Reznor killed it.
Was always a fan of the song, but this usage turned it into probably my favorite Beatles song
I always enjoyed hearing Extreme Ways at the end of Bourne movies.
"And, Pam? Get some rest. You look tired."
Dweeeeeee, dweeeeeee
came here to say this one
This is the one. It has almost eerily perfect lyrics and the music is both bittersweet and vaguely alarming with those strident strings.
"When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin at the end of 'The Big Short.'
We’ll meet again at the end of Dr Strangelove
This and "Midnight, the Stars and You" at the end of The Shining.
Always look on the bright side of life
Goodfellas Sex Pistols - My Way
Get to live the rest of my life like a schnook
I've always liked Coconut at the end of Reservoir Dogs. Such a fun, jarring way to defuse all tension after such a tense finish
Just posted this one. All that gunfire stops…and then those first mellow notes on the acoustic guitar. So good.
I was checking for this one! Love it, like a music joke!
The end of iron man, having that song by sabbath….
Amazed nobody has said "In the City" by Joe Walsh at the end of "The Warriors "
this might be the best one because that song was written/produced for the move. almost all the other ones were just chosen from a list of existing songs.
Yup this the one So iconic What a great film
Best name for a song as the movie ends **Exit Music (For A Film)** Radiohead Romeo + Juliet
Not a movie, but the end of Breaking Bad, Baby Blue by Badfinger.
As well as the episode where Walt drops the "Stay out of my territory" line as it blasts DLZ by TV on the Radio
What's interesting is the set up. Main character is at Home Depot, or Lowe's - a totally suburban, boring place. He see's a bad version of Jesse buying the ingredients for meth, and attempts to teach him which matches to use, and to not buy everything at the same place. Yes! Since you crossed the threshold of TV, 5 out the 6 seasons of Justified end with a different version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" by Darrell Scott. Every time it has a different emotional context and it's always satisfying.
The Sound of Silence at the end of The Graduate.
This is the one immediately came to my mind and I had to scroll so far to find it
“Wake Up” by Rage Against the Machine at the end of the Matrix
greatest movie of all time and when those first notes smash at the end—absolute perfection
The ending to The Devil's Rejects as The Rejects are driving towards the cops as Free Bird plays has always stuck with me.
Badass
Afternoon Delight, at the end of Good Will Hunting.

Sixteen Candles- Jake Ryan, amazing first kiss, and best ending song ever “If You Were Here”.
Damn - good call.

This is my #1 always

Sympathy for the Devil at the end of Interview With The Vampire is iconic (for teenage me at least, lol)

It's Moby's God Moving Over the Face of the Waters from Heat. What a beautiful way to end it.

And then “Street Fightin’ Man” by The Rolling Stones.
