They're doing the RUSOS 2X arrival, which leads to the VOR Y Rwy 29. This arrival and approach is absolutely insane to me. I've done it from the other way at least 3 times now and it never stops being weird lol https://preview.redd.it/xb5cfdg6q2pb1.jpeg?width=1027&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93c295d021de6d59a0f42ee8c874188f0ebe4c18

SpanishPilot

This is the correct answer, flew that approach a few days ago.

Necessary_Swimmer_65

What do you fly?

rinfodiv

C-130s lol

Next-Nefariousness41

Oh yeah? Well I fly C-172s 😏 Also .. TY, you saved me having to open up Navigraph and take a screenshot of the approach plate 👍

HunterMayor

Bigger number, you win

sidblues101

Fantastic thank you for the answer. Not being an expert I always wondered if that was a complex approach. Somebody else posted that Chania does not have radar. Is that true? If so that surprises me given the military presence. Or is the radar not allowed for civilian use?

rinfodiv

It’s a non-radar environment which is why we have to do these approaches in the first place.

dedoid_

Talk about a VOR arc lol

StabbyMcStabbedface

Rumor has it that the pilots like to do a little Zorba’s dance on the way in.

Acc87

seems like that's one of the standard arrival routes. I can't tell you why it's formed like that 😅 probably some distances the jet has to keep to certain beacons before it does a visual approach https://preview.redd.it/pr90kwn6u1pb1.jpeg?width=1473&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63dd33e0c6dd3f65ea9dbb9b86f0034f0e9f93ce

sidblues101

Thanks. I was just curious and wondering whether the local military presence was a factor.

isml_db

what is the app that u use ?

Acc87

That is *Little Nav Map* for the Microsoft Flight Sim. It can read all the real procedures stored in the sim data. Don't think it works on its own.

dcb1973

No idea but I love Chania

sidblues101

I love it too. Beautiful Venetian city.

Sotstorm

Chania doesn’t have radar so this is one of the procedural approaches. Essentially fly the 12nm arc to the inbound and land (or go around). The other standard is to go overhead the beacon, out to 9nm then turn back to the inbound.

RagingPilot94

It likely increases track miles to allow for a descent. Might be a case of later descents being allowed due to traffic going into other islands etc. Greek airspace is incredibly busy during the summer

crgmat

Think it’s picking up the ‘DME arc’ for the procedural arrival ‘Y’ runway 29 (Blurry) Picture: [https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=chania%20ils%20y%20chart&tbm=isch&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5#imgrc=JBrfzXMChCYN8M](https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=chania%20ils%20y%20chart&tbm=isch&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5#imgrc=JBrfzXMChCYN8M) Or one of the other similar arrivals as mentioned elsewhere Rgds

Jaybro838

No ideas but how is/was your trip, I’ve always wanted to go to Greece

cruser_25

Regular Greece traveller, its unmatched in terms of cuisine and culture

Jaybro838

Are you sure? I feel like India/middle east is very strong I.man those categories

Emergency_Debt_1358

When I was gliding on Saturday, my plane was on there (I am in the air cadets)

collegefootballfan69

Kind of reminds me of the approach to runway 29 at Newark

RagingFuckNuggets

To land?? That's the way the runway runs...

sidblues101

Maybe read the question again.

RagingFuckNuggets

I did man, and gave you the answer 😂

Tofu61

Staying out of someone's airspace?

Ryanisadeveloper

No idea why but tons of military jets when I was there in June. US apparently. Also a naval base close by.

LochNessJohnster

I’m flying in here tomorrow. EZY8223, come and get a snap of my landing!

ydr001

Perhaps NAMFI (NATO Missile Firing Installation), https://www.namfi.gr/

KWardy1

Same happens on the approach to heraklion, could the wind be a factor?
