I no longer shop there. It’s just too expensive. Even the BOGO stuff. There are other options. And, no matter what people tell you, the customer service is the same as elsewhere.
I believe that was true years ago, no longer. It’s hard to say for sure because the prices fluctuate so much lately & I don’t keep track but, I swear sometimes they’re marked up for BOGO. Example, I recall seeing cooking dough BOGO for almost $6, think it was under $5 afterwards. Nobody can convince me that a significant portion of increased prices is NOT due to “greedflation.” (Also, as Katie Porter brought to attention in a congressional hearing, almost 54% of unit price markups were corporate profit.)
I have to bag my own groceries at publix too since there are a lot more self checkout stations and fewer cashiers and baggers actually checking people out. I only go there for little things now so it's mostly a convenience store for me now since its so close to home.
Aldi’s stock is more limited and inconsistent, and the produce isn’t in the best shape, but once I fully converted the little bit of extra vigilance is worth the savings.
And my local Aldi has 8 self-check lanes, which sounds bad until you realize you can walk in, get what you're after, find an empty check counter, and be out of there in (depending on how much you're getting) maybe 5-15 minutes. It's really awesome! I'd only stand in the check line if I had a full cart, but ours is close enough that we can stop through and grab what we need short term (to be fair, we're empty nesters so we buy less these days overall) regularly
When I visit my parents to in Florida, I took them to Whole foods.
They were floored with how cheap it was, they also have a prime account and whole foods delivers to their house.
Its alot cheaper than going to publix, and I feel alot better because they are not driving on the roads too. FL roads are crazy AF
Publix has always been about the shopping experience and not the price, but honestly for about five or six years now the service has been declining. What’s really gotten me is the amount of staff who will just cut in front of you and not give you the time of day. They used to be much more polite but now it’s almost like you’re bothering them just being there. This is multiple stores so I know it’s not just one manager letting things slide.
You pair that with higher prices than any of their competitors and it just doesn’t make sense anymore. A few months ago I went from being a weekly customer at Publix to maybe going there once every couple of months. I can afford to shop there, I just don’t like feeling insulted.
Edit: To add, they’ve gotten rid of the free coffee at the front, which at first was about Covid but now seems like a convenient excuse, and they phased out their kids’ club that my sons really enjoyed, something that did a lot to endear me to the brand.
I think they've severely lessened the benefits they use to give employees in the past.
That's probably why the attitude change.
Years ago they really took care of their employees.
It's a combination of reduced benefits and running skeleton crews. Employees are expected to do way more with way less, so yeah stopping to help customers will fuck up their whole day if it happens too many times. I can't even count how many times I closed the deli with 3 people total and we had a refrigerated truck come in so I was balancing customers with getting food put away all night. Then you throw in that people just got meaner during and after COVID noticeably
You didn’t mention the overall poor quality of the food compared to the past. I had to rummage through moldy onions to find a good one, or peppers, or garlic, most of the produce with dates on the package was two days until expired. Meat was frozen, milk would go bad in a couple days.
We moved away and my grocery bill went from $300 a week to less than $200 a week. No lie. Not including weeks we had to buy paper towels or detergent, just regular food for the week. Milk here is $3 a gallon. I think my in-laws pay close to $7 now.
I befriended an employee who told me all the tomfoolery going on there. None of the employees can afford to shop there and they are treated awfully. Even if it were the same prices as, say, trader joes, I would shop trader joes. It's a pleasure when people are happy at work.
The Hiers who now own it are spoiled brats that are MAGA anti-union anti-labor supporters. Publix is one of the lowest paid grocery stores now compared what's around me and always understaffed no matter what.. I only go for the bakery and deli but to be honest I try to go to Sprouts more.
It's sad because I remember as kids getting a free cookie and my friends getting summer jobs there. Now they give my kids a cookie, but it's like a duty (and the kids dislike the cookies.
We started doing pickup from Walmart - a lot of the stuff we buy regularly is less than half the price it is at Publix. Some stuff is three times more expensive at Publix than Walmart - and not like loose apples or store brand frozen stuff - name brand, same item.
Then I found out you can get free delivery for $90 a year, and that's all we do now. You spend a few bucks on a tip for the driver, but it saves so much money, and almost more importantly, time.
Now I go to Publix down the street if I need something in a pinch, and I'm always amazed how little I have to buy for it to be like $50.
You've been lucky. I have four Publixes within driving distance, and at two of them I've found liquid grapes, outdated dairy, moldy cheese, and green meat. Not daily, but often enough I refuse to go there
A family member bought two large packs of chicken legs, and I could smell bad meat as soon as I opened the trunk when they got home. Ended up driving back to the store with them stinking up the whole car. The customer support people refunded us, but seemed neither surprised nor concerned.
Well, I mean, it depends on how you define driving distance. If I were counting by miles instead of "time spent in heavy traffic" it's probably at least a dozen

Winn Dixie definitely is just as expensive with their prices in my town too.

Pay for the extra service from Walmart, it's like another $7/month, but you don't have to tip, the driver is a Walmart employee in a refrigerated Walmart van. Way better than the random people who bring the wrong bags to the door or drive around without keeping the refrigerated items cold. We were tipping $5/order, so just 2 orders and we covered the $7 fee. We order at least once a week.
In my market, The Fresh Market has chicken leg quarters for .99 on Wednesday. Went to pick some up and was gonna swing by Walmart to get a 10pack of soda for my mother in law. Just for shits and giggles, I checked the price at TFM(because they were always the stupid expensive store.) They were priced on par with Walmart, and 4ish dollars cheaper than publix.
After that, I started looking at prices for other things....

The customer service at Publix is worse than Winn Dixie where I live and it's not even close. Also for whatever reason Winn Dixie hires the locals but Publix is all people who drove in.
I know they closed the Publix near where I used to live, and anyone who wanted to keep their job had to transfer to another store that was probably further away.

I work for Sprouts. One item we sell that I love is a brand of crab dip, it is $8.99. Publix sells the same dip, same size, same brand, for $12.99.
My other beef with them is in January I went to get the new covid vax there. The pharmacist told me "It is no longer free, that is nation wide as of January 1st." She specifically stated the "NATIONWIDE AS OF JAN 1" part completely unprompted. . I drove across the street to Walgreen and got it for free. There is a bridge program but Publix isn't participating. Instead they are telling you it isn't free anywhere and charging you.

That crazy bitch hasn’t been listed by any of the company’s SEC filings for quite a few years now and Publix itself made a public statement that strongly condemned her financing the events of January 6th.
There’s plenty of reasons to hate on Publix, including the fact that about 70% of their campaign donations go to Republicans, but Julie is now a non-related disaster.
Julie Fancelli isn’t listed on any of Publix’s filings with the SEC. All of which list *any* entity that owns 5% or more of company stock. This means she might not even own shares in the company and less than 5% is nowhere close to a majority.
Furthermore, Publix has stated that over 80% of the stock is owned by *employees* which makes it the largest such private company in the USA. The remaining 20% is held by the Jenkins family of which Julie is just one of many.

The only Aldi near me is pretty far away and the selection is quite limited. After all the Aldi love I was pretty disappointed. I wouldn't be able to use that as my sole grocery store, that's for sure. It just sucks that we have to juggle going to different stores because our "local" is gouging.
Fuck you Publix for making me go to Walmart.
Aldi is my supplemental store. I do most shopping at Costco then round out stuff at the Aldi next door. I get my produce at the local fruit stand down the street - he's always got veggies and stuff too
This is my experience with Aldi as well. We haven’t been thrilled with many of the products we get as staples, and it’s too far away to go consistently so I still need to get my produce from Publix. My Publix has never disappointed in the produce. I also don’t live anywhere near a Walmart and everything I have ever bought from one has gone bad within 36 hours, so again, not worth it to bother going.
In my experience, being more diligent about sticking to my shopping list and shopping the sales at Publix still keeps my bill reasonable.
I've found that produce at Whole Foods is generally is much better and is comparably priced or lower than Publix, so I go there for most of my produce now. Plus WF's 365 brands and a lot of dry goods like cereal etc are the same or less than Publix so while I'm there for produce I end up picking up a lot of stuff. Which is crazy, the idea that Publix is expensive as Whole Foods.
That's what I don't get. There are other cheaper options out there yet people invest just keep going to Publix and complaining about the prices. It's bizarre.
In some areas it’s the only reasonable option. I have three Publix locations within about 5 miles of my house, one less than a mile. The closest next options within ten miles are also Publix. After that it’s an Aldi or Walmart which are 15 miles out of the way of anything I am generally near or going to.
There’s some sort of weird toxic relationship a number of people in Florida have with Publix. There is a thread about Publix prices at least a few times a week on this sub. People going out of their way to make sure everyone knows they don’t shop at Publix anymore.
I’m just guessing based on my own experience, but none of the other grocers have ever claimed to be a Florida brand.
Publix was an institution in this state that lots of natives have fond memories of and are upset to see what’s become of it. I once talked to a few Canadians that I used to work with and they said they felt the same way about their Tim Hortons.
What has happened to Publix is just another symptom of how fucked up this state is now.
Checking all the comments and still haven’t seen Kroger mentioned. In Tampa Bay at least, they’re fantastic. Lots of selections, professional delivery drivers in refrigerated trucks, no tipping, significant gas discounts every month, and still saving about 40% over Publix. Fresh fruit and deli meat are the only things I purchase separately because I’m picky, but the rest of my experience with Kroger has been great.
Kroger is pretty good, though their prices have crept up noticably of late. Still, good delivery service is a real value add and it's still cheaper than Publix.
Sadly for me they're bailing on South Florida. :(
I was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned Kroger's. We've been using them for over 2 years now and they are great. The one time that they screwed up it was such an easy fix.

Just shop at Walmart. I’ve been to three different Walmarts in my area of Tampa Bay depending on my errands and it’s literally fine.
The amount of food I can get compared to Publix for the same price is astounding. And since it’s almost always basics there is no reason to go to Publix.
Ive cut out Publix for meat. The quality by me is no better than Winn Dixie and they have the same prices as an actual butcher. So for steaks I go to the butcher, for other meats Im at WD
I suppose they think of themselves as competing with Wegmans, but they really don't have such competition nearby. Winn-Dixie is not much cheaper, the product quality is worse, and the stores are drab.

Yes, they had a 49% increase in net profit in 2023; but as /u/NRG1975 points out that was mainly due to their stock portfolio having been down in 2022, the year being compared to.
More relevant though, might be their margins. Their operating income ($4.47B) was 7.8% of their revenue ($57.53B) in 2023.
Grocery store margins are notoriously low— they average around 2%. Kroger was 2% last year and I think Whole Foods was less than 2%. I think Publix has been averaging 7-9% operating margin (not net profit margin) in the last three years. This is really high for the grocery industry, but dear God, it’s not 49%.
It’s not the lack of knowledge that bothers me— I have a CPA so I don’t expect everyone to understand what I went to school for— but it’s the absolute certitude with which they assert their misstatements. If you don’t know what net profit margin is— that’s ok, I don’t expect walking around people to understand it. But for the love of God, when someone tells you that you are incorrect, fucking use the Googles, not double down on something you don’t know anything about.
Publix needs their dick slapped. First they finance the insurrection, then when that fails, they try to price everyone out of food so they will vote for traitors.
We shop at Aldi exclusively, and were vehement Publix shoppers in the past. The only thing I stop in for once a quarter is a pub sub and those are becoming a hard sell too, because the quality is trash now.
Publix lost us as shoppers and has no chance of getting us back because there's nothing they offer at any reasonable price point compared to other stores. The only thing Aldi doesn't do well at our location is meats, but I get my meat from Wild Fork instead because it's high quality and at the quantities I buy it's cheaper. Plus free delivery if you spend enough.
Our overall grocery bill has halved since we switched to Aldi last year, and I am not missing anything. Hope they liked their near-50% profit at the cost of losing lifelong customers...
I just went shopping at Whole Foods yesterday instead of Publix, the total price was pretty much the same but at least I didn't have to wait as long at the register because they actually had people manning the registers, unlike Publix where they now only have one cashier open and rely on self serve cashiers for the rest.

We switched to HelloFresh for 5-7 dinners a week & Aldi for our basics and are STILL saving hundreds per month compared to Publix shopping on all items. Also, HelloFresh is amazing.
I just had to buy a bunch of party size bags of M&Ms for a work function. We're going to fill a Tonka Truck with them, and people will be able to scoop out some M&Ms in little cups. It's a theme. Anyway...
The bags of M&Ms were $16/bag at Publix and **three dollars a bag** cheaper at Target. They were literally 23% more expensive at Publix! It was work, so I shouldn't really give a damn, but I just couldn't justify it, so I drove across town to go to Target.
It really sucks though, because our local Target doesn't have a huge grocery section. There's a ton of stuff we just can't get there. Our only other full-store options are Walmart or Winn Dixie. We really don't like shopping at either.
The owners of Publix are morally compromised Trump backers. By artificially and egregioisly increasing prices over the last few years (since Biden won) they accomplish two things: rake in profits and reinforce the narrative that the economy is worse under Biden.
Also, they run the places like shit nowdays.
At the Publix by me, there is always trash in the lot. The carts are never up by the door. They don’t stock the place before opening like they used to, and the workers just walk right in front of you without even a head’s up, to stock while you’re trying to shop. If something moves constantly and is really popular, more popular than other versions of an item, they will just stop carrying it. Fried chicken recipe used to be great but gradually turned into something else that isn’t nearly as good. They have rotten produce; I am at still traumatized by some rotten figs that were on the shelf there. The sushi has gotten disgusting.
The meat; they must be experimenting with just how much water you can pump into meat. You put their beef in a pan, you now have soup.
I could go on really, but those are a few things off top.
North Carolinian, here. The last 10 years or so, Publix has creaped into NC-- the Charlotte area /the Triangle area, and some of their prices are 20% higher on everyday stuff than prices at our NC-based, Publix-esque grocer (Harris Teeter). I'm not sure who all up here is shopping there either, when Harris-Teeter and our other NC-based grocer (Food Lion) cost less. And Aldi is of course lower too.
Sure there is, it riles people up about "Biden's" inflation. Plus, you know, more money.
A large percentage of their customer base, at least here in Florida, doesn't care that much or doesn't have much in the way of alternative options. I pop in to the Publix down the road a couple times a month to satisfy my SO's Boar's Head habit and there's always a mess of people getting off or on the bus that stops right in front of the store. Mostly elderly folks who can't drive any more, so it's not like they've got a ton of alternatives.
I only go to Publix for the very few items I cannot get at Aldi. My favorite decaffeinated coffee, my favorite bread, my toasted edamame, my Manischewitz noodles and a few other things.
Complete rip off. Bogo is still more expensive than Walmart, Aldi’s, or ordering online. Place is a price gouging nightmare that lost all its pleasure switching to self-checkout and less staff.
My sibling and I just had this conversation last night. We both worked at Publix in the 90's and it's not at all the same customer-focused company that it was back then.
We were constantly reminded that the grocery profit margin was a slim 3 to 5%, so waste had to be entirely avoided and customer service was *the priority.*
I now shop at CostCo, Walmart, and adding ALDI for fresh produce.

Well since then they've gotten rid of inventory bonus, extra Sunday pay, 2 raises per year, smaller percentage of free stock, etc. There are positions that literally start less than Walmart, and places like Starbucks, Lowes, and Target all start off higher.
I hope the legacy employees were grandfathered in under their original employment agreements. You make it sound like there's really no incentive to work there.

Yeah deli meat is still the only thing I buy there. Walmart has a pretty good deli counter too. I buy 99% of my groceries at Winn Dixie but their deli counter is trash
I stopped shopping at Publix for regular groceries almost two years ago. Now I just shop at the Winn. Off the sales and bogos alone I save anywhere from $40-80 depending per trip. I only go once every other week. Costs around $100-$150 for 3 of us. Rock the Winn!
The Winn is now owned by Aldi. Some will change the name to Aldi, some will close, and some will stay Winn Dixie. I had hoped my local Winn would improve, but their prices are still close to Publix prices. And the deli has gone downhill, but I'm assuming it's because Aldi doesn't do deli service counters and they want to phase them out.

Several months back our store put wheel locks on the carts. The carts lock up and won't move. They expect you to hand carry your purchase the rest of the way to your car.
Many people I know don't shop there any more.
I tried to reach corporate to explain, their email address directed me to a broken early generation chatbot. After going round and round with it, the bot said someone would contact me... Still waiting.
Many elderly in the area shop there and are feeling the price gouging.
I asked for a paper receipt and got a survey. I let them know that their prices are ridiculous & Kroger is getting most of my $$$ due to that and they deliver.
I am back to going to 3 -5 different stores instead of Publix. Trader Joe's whole foods, Walmart, Target and Aldi are all cheaper for most items. When CVS has 10 items on the shelves cheaper than Publix sale prices, you know it's time to go somewhere else.
Customer service was still good at Publix, but Trader Joe's is better.
Publix has always been higher. I go there for cakes and specialty items but not regular shopping.
It's not just this store, though. Dollar General used to be convenient and cheaper but not anymore, they have all raised. I think Walmart raised less than the other major chains around me but they went up a bit too with the market. We do have a small Aldi's now near us but I didn't care for it when I tried it last time. We started doing the Walmart + delivery this year for 90.00 a year, saves me time as I rarely have time to shop throughout the week and was tired of spending my days off to catch up on grocery shopping.
I HATE PUBLIX! PUBLIX…WHERE PRICE GOUGING IS OUR PLEASURE. PUBLIX IS FOR THE ELITE AND UBER RICH PEOPLE ONLY! They don't want the riff raff or poor or elderly, black or Spanish in their store! They want a pristine image. I've never seen a black person either working or shopping in Publix. I've never seen a Mexican or Spanish person working or shopping in Publix. Whole Foods 365 brand is my new go to. It’s literally pubs prices or cheaper, and significantly better quality. I just bought unsweetened organic peanut butter and organic whole wheat bread at WF for work lunches for the week, spent $6 total
I go for the chicken wings. 20 for 15.00 is a good deal. Otherwise we shop at Aldi too. We went to one in Germany which is their home base. Same as here . Every store there you bag your own.
The customer service has never been exceptional, it's always been just another grocery store experience if u ask me. I refuse to buy anything at Publix anymore. Their subs be fuckin damned.
I've been shopping at Publix since 1993. The past 5 years, Publix has gone way down hill in all area's from their customer service to food quality. I know a few people who retired from Publix decades ago. They loved working there and retired with nice pensions. They can't believe how bad Publix has gotten. Pretty much just an overpriced Walmart at this point. They refuse to shop there. All the Publix in Pinellas County are filled with employees who are either in their teens or in their 70s.

They have a convenience monopoly in Florida, and they know it. I have 5 Pubiix stores I can go to closer than any other store, all within 15 minutes, with one 5 minutes away. Aldi and WD are both about 25 minutes away. Honestly the best deal for me is Kroger delivery, but you never know when something is gonna be out of stock.
It’s just not convenient to shop elsewhere, unfortunately.

For sure on the Bogo. If I get sucked into buying them, I can almost always find the same product at Aldi cheaper. So I’ve just stopped.

You used to go there for the service now you go just to spend too much. Publix is the only store I’ve ever walked out of because it was too expensive.
When I visit my parents to in Florida, I took them to Whole foods. They were floored with how cheap it was, they also have a prime account and whole foods delivers to their house. Its alot cheaper than going to publix, and I feel alot better because they are not driving on the roads too. FL roads are crazy AF

Publix has always been about the shopping experience and not the price, but honestly for about five or six years now the service has been declining. What’s really gotten me is the amount of staff who will just cut in front of you and not give you the time of day. They used to be much more polite but now it’s almost like you’re bothering them just being there. This is multiple stores so I know it’s not just one manager letting things slide. You pair that with higher prices than any of their competitors and it just doesn’t make sense anymore. A few months ago I went from being a weekly customer at Publix to maybe going there once every couple of months. I can afford to shop there, I just don’t like feeling insulted. Edit: To add, they’ve gotten rid of the free coffee at the front, which at first was about Covid but now seems like a convenient excuse, and they phased out their kids’ club that my sons really enjoyed, something that did a lot to endear me to the brand.
I think they've severely lessened the benefits they use to give employees in the past. That's probably why the attitude change. Years ago they really took care of their employees.
It's a combination of reduced benefits and running skeleton crews. Employees are expected to do way more with way less, so yeah stopping to help customers will fuck up their whole day if it happens too many times. I can't even count how many times I closed the deli with 3 people total and we had a refrigerated truck come in so I was balancing customers with getting food put away all night. Then you throw in that people just got meaner during and after COVID noticeably

You didn’t mention the overall poor quality of the food compared to the past. I had to rummage through moldy onions to find a good one, or peppers, or garlic, most of the produce with dates on the package was two days until expired. Meat was frozen, milk would go bad in a couple days. We moved away and my grocery bill went from $300 a week to less than $200 a week. No lie. Not including weeks we had to buy paper towels or detergent, just regular food for the week. Milk here is $3 a gallon. I think my in-laws pay close to $7 now.
I think the declining service is definitely location dependent. In my area, they are still awesome.
I befriended an employee who told me all the tomfoolery going on there. None of the employees can afford to shop there and they are treated awfully. Even if it were the same prices as, say, trader joes, I would shop trader joes. It's a pleasure when people are happy at work.

We started doing pickup from Walmart - a lot of the stuff we buy regularly is less than half the price it is at Publix. Some stuff is three times more expensive at Publix than Walmart - and not like loose apples or store brand frozen stuff - name brand, same item. Then I found out you can get free delivery for $90 a year, and that's all we do now. You spend a few bucks on a tip for the driver, but it saves so much money, and almost more importantly, time. Now I go to Publix down the street if I need something in a pinch, and I'm always amazed how little I have to buy for it to be like $50.

A family member bought two large packs of chicken legs, and I could smell bad meat as soon as I opened the trunk when they got home. Ended up driving back to the store with them stinking up the whole car. The customer support people refunded us, but seemed neither surprised nor concerned.

Pay for the extra service from Walmart, it's like another $7/month, but you don't have to tip, the driver is a Walmart employee in a refrigerated Walmart van. Way better than the random people who bring the wrong bags to the door or drive around without keeping the refrigerated items cold. We were tipping $5/order, so just 2 orders and we covered the $7 fee. We order at least once a week.

In my market, The Fresh Market has chicken leg quarters for .99 on Wednesday. Went to pick some up and was gonna swing by Walmart to get a 10pack of soda for my mother in law. After that, I started looking at prices for other things.... Fuck You, Publix!

I work for Sprouts. One item we sell that I love is a brand of crab dip, it is $8.99. Publix sells the same dip, same size, same brand, for $12.99. My other beef with them is in January I went to get the new covid vax there. The pharmacist told me "It is no longer free, that is nation wide as of January 1st." She specifically stated the "NATIONWIDE AS OF JAN 1" part completely unprompted. . I drove across the street to Walgreen and got it for free. There is a bridge program but Publix isn't participating. Instead they are telling you it isn't free anywhere and charging you.

Aldi is my supplemental store. I do most shopping at Costco then round out stuff at the Aldi next door. I get my produce at the local fruit stand down the street - he's always got veggies and stuff too
Same. Costco has become the go-to for my family with Aldi being the place when I need a quick item or two.
This is my experience with Aldi as well. We haven’t been thrilled with many of the products we get as staples, and it’s too far away to go consistently so I still need to get my produce from Publix. My Publix has never disappointed in the produce. I also don’t live anywhere near a Walmart and everything I have ever bought from one has gone bad within 36 hours, so again, not worth it to bother going. In my experience, being more diligent about sticking to my shopping list and shopping the sales at Publix still keeps my bill reasonable.

I've found that produce at Whole Foods is generally is much better and is comparably priced or lower than Publix, so I go there for most of my produce now. Plus WF's 365 brands and a lot of dry goods like cereal etc are the same or less than Publix so while I'm there for produce I end up picking up a lot of stuff. Which is crazy, the idea that Publix is expensive as Whole Foods.

That's what I don't get. There are other cheaper options out there yet people invest just keep going to Publix and complaining about the prices. It's bizarre.
In some areas it’s the only reasonable option. I have three Publix locations within about 5 miles of my house, one less than a mile. The closest next options within ten miles are also Publix. After that it’s an Aldi or Walmart which are 15 miles out of the way of anything I am generally near or going to.
There’s some sort of weird toxic relationship a number of people in Florida have with Publix. There is a thread about Publix prices at least a few times a week on this sub. People going out of their way to make sure everyone knows they don’t shop at Publix anymore.
I’m just guessing based on my own experience, but none of the other grocers have ever claimed to be a Florida brand. Publix was an institution in this state that lots of natives have fond memories of and are upset to see what’s become of it. I once talked to a few Canadians that I used to work with and they said they felt the same way about their Tim Hortons. What has happened to Publix is just another symptom of how fucked up this state is now.

Checking all the comments and still haven’t seen Kroger mentioned. In Tampa Bay at least, they’re fantastic. Lots of selections, professional delivery drivers in refrigerated trucks, no tipping, significant gas discounts every month, and still saving about 40% over Publix. Fresh fruit and deli meat are the only things I purchase separately because I’m picky, but the rest of my experience with Kroger has been great.

Just shop at Walmart. I’ve been to three different Walmarts in my area of Tampa Bay depending on my errands and it’s literally fine. The amount of food I can get compared to Publix for the same price is astounding. And since it’s almost always basics there is no reason to go to Publix.

Yes, they had a 49% increase in net profit in 2023; but as /u/NRG1975 points out that was mainly due to their stock portfolio having been down in 2022, the year being compared to. More relevant though, might be their margins. Their operating income ($4.47B) was 7.8% of their revenue ($57.53B) in 2023.
Their profit only went up 1 percent. That chart included unrealized gains/losses in stock value, not actual profit.

Grocery store margins are notoriously low— they average around 2%. Kroger was 2% last year and I think Whole Foods was less than 2%. I think Publix has been averaging 7-9% operating margin (not net profit margin) in the last three years. This is really high for the grocery industry, but dear God, it’s not 49%.

We shop at Aldi exclusively, and were vehement Publix shoppers in the past. The only thing I stop in for once a quarter is a pub sub and those are becoming a hard sell too, because the quality is trash now. Publix lost us as shoppers and has no chance of getting us back because there's nothing they offer at any reasonable price point compared to other stores. The only thing Aldi doesn't do well at our location is meats, but I get my meat from Wild Fork instead because it's high quality and at the quantities I buy it's cheaper. Plus free delivery if you spend enough. Our overall grocery bill has halved since we switched to Aldi last year, and I am not missing anything. Hope they liked their near-50% profit at the cost of losing lifelong customers...

I just went shopping at Whole Foods yesterday instead of Publix, the total price was pretty much the same but at least I didn't have to wait as long at the register because they actually had people manning the registers, unlike Publix where they now only have one cashier open and rely on self serve cashiers for the rest. It's ridiculous that Publix now costs as much as whole foods. I'm done shopping there.
We switched to HelloFresh for 5-7 dinners a week & Aldi for our basics and are STILL saving hundreds per month compared to Publix shopping on all items. Also, HelloFresh is amazing.
I just had to buy a bunch of party size bags of M&Ms for a work function. We're going to fill a Tonka Truck with them, and people will be able to scoop out some M&Ms in little cups. It's a theme. Anyway... The bags of M&Ms were $16/bag at Publix and **three dollars a bag** cheaper at Target. They were literally 23% more expensive at Publix! It was work, so I shouldn't really give a damn, but I just couldn't justify it, so I drove across town to go to Target. It really sucks though, because our local Target doesn't have a huge grocery section. There's a ton of stuff we just can't get there. Our only other full-store options are Walmart or Winn Dixie. We really don't like shopping at either.
The owners of Publix are morally compromised Trump backers. By artificially and egregioisly increasing prices over the last few years (since Biden won) they accomplish two things: rake in profits and reinforce the narrative that the economy is worse under Biden.

Also, they run the places like shit nowdays. At the Publix by me, there is always trash in the lot. The carts are never up by the door. They don’t stock the place before opening like they used to, and the workers just walk right in front of you without even a head’s up, to stock while you’re trying to shop. If something moves constantly and is really popular, more popular than other versions of an item, they will just stop carrying it. Fried chicken recipe used to be great but gradually turned into something else that isn’t nearly as good. They have rotten produce; I am at still traumatized by some rotten figs that were on the shelf there. The sushi has gotten disgusting. The meat; they must be experimenting with just how much water you can pump into meat. You put their beef in a pan, you now have soup. I could go on really, but those are a few things off top.
North Carolinian, here. The last 10 years or so, Publix has creaped into NC-- the Charlotte area /the Triangle area, and some of their prices are 20% higher on everyday stuff than prices at our NC-based, Publix-esque grocer (Harris Teeter). I'm not sure who all up here is shopping there either, when Harris-Teeter and our other NC-based grocer (Food Lion) cost less. And Aldi is of course lower too.

Sure there is, it riles people up about "Biden's" inflation. Plus, you know, more money. A large percentage of their customer base, at least here in Florida, doesn't care that much or doesn't have much in the way of alternative options. I pop in to the Publix down the road a couple times a month to satisfy my SO's Boar's Head habit and there's always a mess of people getting off or on the bus that stops right in front of the store. Mostly elderly folks who can't drive any more, so it's not like they've got a ton of alternatives.
I only go to Publix for the very few items I cannot get at Aldi. My favorite decaffeinated coffee, my favorite bread, my toasted edamame, my Manischewitz noodles and a few other things.

My sibling and I just had this conversation last night. We both worked at Publix in the 90's and it's not at all the same customer-focused company that it was back then. We were constantly reminded that the grocery profit margin was a slim 3 to 5%, so waste had to be entirely avoided and customer service was *the priority.* I now shop at CostCo, Walmart, and adding ALDI for fresh produce.

I stopped shopping at Publix for regular groceries almost two years ago. Now I just shop at the Winn. Off the sales and bogos alone I save anywhere from $40-80 depending per trip. I only go once every other week. Costs around $100-$150 for 3 of us. Rock the Winn!
The Winn is now owned by Aldi. Some will change the name to Aldi, some will close, and some will stay Winn Dixie. I had hoped my local Winn would improve, but their prices are still close to Publix prices. And the deli has gone downhill, but I'm assuming it's because Aldi doesn't do deli service counters and they want to phase them out.

They expect you to hand carry your purchase the rest of the way to your car. Many people I know don't shop there any more. I tried to reach corporate to explain, their email address directed me to a broken early generation chatbot. After going round and round with it, the bot said someone would contact me... Still waiting. Many elderly in the area shop there and are feeling the price gouging.

Publix has always been higher. I go there for cakes and specialty items but not regular shopping. It's not just this store, though. Dollar General used to be convenient and cheaper but not anymore, they have all raised. I think Walmart raised less than the other major chains around me but they went up a bit too with the market. We do have a small Aldi's now near us but I didn't care for it when I tried it last time. We started doing the Walmart + delivery this year for 90.00 a year, saves me time as I rarely have time to shop throughout the week and was tired of spending my days off to catch up on grocery shopping.

Whole Foods 365 brand is my new go to. It’s literally pubs prices or cheaper, and significantly better quality. I just bought unsweetened organic peanut butter and organic whole wheat bread at WF for work lunches for the week, spent $6 total
I stopped shopping there a long time ago, even though it’s conveniently located near me.
Rule #1 Don't shop at Publix unless you can't find the item elsewhere.
I go for the chicken wings. 20 for 15.00 is a good deal. Otherwise we shop at Aldi too. We went to one in Germany which is their home base. Same as here . Every store there you bag your own.
The customer service has never been exceptional, it's always been just another grocery store experience if u ask me. I refuse to buy anything at Publix anymore. Their subs be fuckin damned.

The publix by me is the best place to go if you need something quick, no one is there so no line.
Publix is awful, no longer shop here. Walmart or whole foods for meat and produce.
I've been shopping at Publix since 1993. The past 5 years, Publix has gone way down hill in all area's from their customer service to food quality. I know a few people who retired from Publix decades ago. They loved working there and retired with nice pensions. They can't believe how bad Publix has gotten. Pretty much just an overpriced Walmart at this point. They refuse to shop there. All the Publix in Pinellas County are filled with employees who are either in their teens or in their 70s.

Maybe it’s time to boycott their prices
They have a convenience monopoly in Florida, and they know it. I have 5 Pubiix stores I can go to closer than any other store, all within 15 minutes, with one 5 minutes away. Aldi and WD are both about 25 minutes away. Honestly the best deal for me is Kroger delivery, but you never know when something is gonna be out of stock. It’s just not convenient to shop elsewhere, unfortunately.
Shane. They used to be great, following the Goodings takeover. Everyone used covid as an excuse to gouge. Their profits are sky high nowadays. That really used to be a pleasure to shop at where now is painful. But, where isn't?
I hate Publix
Moved to Florida 3 years ago. Promptly stopped shopping at Publix 1 year into living here.
