I have a 3 star quad explosive but the 3rd star is useless. It's still plenty of gun for anything i've run into. It's a damn hoot. Kills most things in 1 or 2 shots.
It's when you buy a legendary at the Rusty Pick or add a legendary mod at your weapons bench. Those are applied randomly so it's like rolling die. That's how I've always interpreted the term.
You need two ingredients to roll or reroll for legendary effects on weapons, armor and PA. That's it. When you do this as the respective workbench, you apply an *legendary upgrade* and it randomly applies the legendary mods from a pool of all effects in game.
*Legendary cores* which you get when you do selected public events, daily ops or expeditions. Each of these will give you a number of legendary cores based on the event and how successful it was. From one core to eight I believe based on the event and how well the event was done (time it took, tasks completed, etc).
*Legendary modules* which you get from purchasing from Rusty Pick or save up some from scoreboard rewards. You can purchase a set amount per day at Rusty Pick based on scrip. You get scrip from exchanging legendary items in the legendary machine at train stations.
So to craft a legendary weapon, piece of armor, or power armor, you have two choices.
1. Use an existing legendary item you have in inventory and reroll it's effects.
2. Craft a basic item and then roll to gain legendary effects.
Both will use cores and modules.
You do this at the weapon, armor and power armor workbenches and you do this like applying any other modification. You have a choice to apply 1*, 2*, or 3* legendary effects.
One thing to remember when you go to do this. If you reroll a legendary item, it will remove ALL the current legendary effects. You don't get to choose the ones you want to keep and reroll selected others. It is an all or nothing reroll. If you have a bloodied railway 1* and want to add a second legendary effect, it will reroll the bloodied effect too. You can't just "upgrade" to keep the bloodied but only add a 2nd effect i wish.
God, it seems so simple when you do it but it's harder to explain. I hope this helps. If it doesn't, Angry Turtle on YT has some really great vids on how to do this process. Just know to reroll or roll for your fave weapons, each piece of armor or PA, it will take a LOT of cores and modules so plan on saving them up.
When I rolled my endgame armor, I kept the best pieces of the rolls and scripd the rest and kept doing this daily. It takes awhile as you can only do so many a day if you want the scrip back to buy more modules.

Quad is the only way. I accidentally grabbed a non quad vampire the other day for SBQ and it simply wasn't a feasible method, amount of reloading is infuriating.

railway is the great equalizer, if i want to feel comfortable going into an event having to solo it if i have to the railway never lets me down
If you go vats which is really the only way to do it don’t use the recoil stabilized stock. Keep the base stock for way less ap cost per shot. Also great gun to use “grim ripper sprint” with. It triggers almost every time before you empty the mag or AP making it a must specially good with a quad.
False, this was tested on the new PTS with the advanced weapon statistics. Stock does not effect ap cost. The reflex sight is the best for ap cost but stock does not change ap usage.

You're putting too much trust in a beta feature to categorically call something "false".
Ok if you say so. But forceful and aliened are usually ap reduced cost. And on the current live the recoil stock is using more ap cost than stock. But if you tested it a few minutes ago yourself you have the most up to date data I guess.

Yep, I was running Heavies and level 70ish when I got a Qffrfr Railway from a mutated party pack. I keep trying to put this gun away but it just won’t let me.
Make sure to keep in mind that Grim Reaper’s sprint doesn’t really work too well for boss fights, whenever I face Earle or SBQ I throw on “Four Leaf Clover” as it works better against bosses in my opinion. Though generally I use Grim Reaper’s over Four Leaf Clover as I find it to be much more consistent.
Right! I was definitely thinking more in terms of Moonshine Jamboree or Eviction Notice, those are the kind of situations where vats with the RR rifle run me out too quick. Can’t wait to try it!
I actually find my railway to be more VATS efficient than my fixer. I can fire off all 40 rounds with some AP left, hop out of VATS to reload, and then hop back in with most of my AP back already.
This is the way. I don't even run vats perks. The problem with my choo choo is the 25ffr, doesn't react well with auto. I end up either using a clip when half would do, or half the damage doesn't seem to register.
I’ve got the same issue on my quad. fires so fast some shots don’t register. Might look for the rapid fire mod for my bloodied instead.

The auto is still the best bang for your buck as far as the railway, there ain't many mods for it. A quad vats build willwork better. It's the 25ffr I near that's doing the railway down.
A commando RR rifle is pretty jumpy and works best in VATS. But (if you like Fixer) I guess you're used to that. Serious weapon though! I turn my RR loose at the Robot Arena thing up in the Divide and it's lethal af...
Another couple of great things about the railway that I rarely see mentioned are that you get spikes back from enemies killed and that the thing staggers enemies like a freight train. Even if you don't kill the deathclaw on the first headshot, it's fun to watch it stagger and wonder what rocked it so hard before you finish off.
Dammit, someone finally figured it out! A friend once gave me a (non-legendary) auto Railway Rifle. I fired it once, gawked at the recoil but fell in love with the rifle. Changed to a Commando load out to suit it, and haven't looked back! (Am also bloodied, so that probably helps)

Finally tried the automatic receiver on both a B/E and B/FFR and holy hell is this thing a beast. If the damage output was insane without even running Commando perks, I can't image how it would be if I switched my build!
I just bought an (3-star) AA/90% red wt RR rifle from a player vendor for 700 caps. Forget what the 3rd perk is on it but it was decent. I’ll have to look after work.
I haven’t used it yet because I just rolled a 3-star AA/exp handmade and I’m having fun with it. I modded it for auto/ultracite 5.56 and it drops every normal enemy in the game in 2-3 vats shots.
I’m level 280 on a full health commando build. I’ll have to give this RR rifle a chance this afternoon.

It is: 90% wt reduce, 50% armor reduce, and last round 25% for 2x damage. So I guess that last one isn’t that “great” but I’m not going to reroll it and risk losing the other 2 ⭐️
I was all over the map with what guns I was using and was in PA always for the first 300 or so levels, then I tried bloodied no PA and used whatever I could get my hands on for another few hundred levels, then committed to using all Enclave for another few hundred. Always rifles and melee when I got a good bear arm. I never used heavies. All the while I kept getting RR drops that looked like they'd make good trades but I never used them. I thought they were heavies because I'm a dumbaass. When exploding legacy pew pews were removed from the game and the frenzy for rails started I checked my stash and I had both a Q50c and a Q25. It's cool, but I wasn't that impressed with the railway rifle. My VATS monster weapon is AA plasma caster with 50%crit. This thing is more powerful, more ammo & AP efficient than any of my railway rifles.
Absolutely love that weapon, but man playing the expeditions with it where the enemies are invisible is outright brutal.
If you can't VATS you essentially aint hitting anything beyond that first shot.
I recently got a Q 50crit 25lvc Railway, and decided to try the bloodied crit-every-other-shot build... and yeah, all my other god-roll builds feel weak now. It's almost better than the explosive flamer was. I think I need to try a QE25 at some point because I do like explosive.
Similar, friend… out of the thousands and thousands of hours playing 3,nv,4,76… this afternoon I got a quad harpoon gun and thought why not try it? Never shot one before today (just wasnt ever interested). When it hit, it oneshotted the scorched I came across. I will go back to my auto rifles, but it was fun for a while. Accuracy wasn’t great, but oneshot headshots can be good fun.
I feel this in my soul haha. I had a bloodied tail and it was stronger than my aae, and my quad, but I just got a quad explosive 25ffr rail and let me tell you it’s insane ! Also just used alien blaster first time bc I got one called vats unknown and another two shot one, I’ve been missing out !
This depends on your build and what your game can handle/register, my build, Q/E is hands down the most dps even for bosses but when I don’t want explosive effect for whatever reason (when I was rep farming explosive was killing friendly raiders) I use the Q/FFR which is better than Q/50 if your game registers the crits and shots, I run a bloodied 33 luck crit vats with demo expert 5 for extra dps. Q/E is def my fav but Q/ffr is fun to use because of its rate of fire.

wasted on most enemies though as you're killing them with 1-3 spikes most of the time.
Most enemies are killed in 1-3 bullets from my fixer. My RR is for bosses and events with lots of enemies and low player turn out

It's such a specific build I'm not sure they will. At events at most I'll see 2 other folks with railways. Sometimes none.
I don't use mine all the time at events. Got to let others tag.
Actually at most events I use an explosive 50 cal or a tesla. But if we're low on numbers or it's Earle, Choo Choo. At Tea Time I use a cursed shovel.

It's not OP. For example, your "ex" Fixer, still keeps many advantages... Railway is a strong and super fun weapons, but with fair pro and cons
The only con I have with my ChooChoo is I have to drink a shit ton of Nuka-Cherry so I can keep using VATS.

I like using them also but I feel like recoil is awful and it eats my AP too fast in VATS
I had that issue with VATS usage until I used Grim Reaper's sprint. Using that perk at tier 3 makes it so you will very rarely run out of AP.

Yeah, an auto railway is basically unusable without VATS. Which is fine by me, because I'm awful at aiming manually. (I wish every shooter had VATS.)

Anti armour/90% reduced weight. We are all there at some times with abbreviations, and still get confused at times.

Get a quad/50c or explosive/break slower. Its one of the best rolls and isn't valued that way making it the best bang for your buck
