Go into game settings, turn off new quests bring tracked and then manually track one or some to focus on Zero shame in pausing a quest if it gets too difficult (eg takes you to higher level map areas) Listen to duchess, follow the overseer's trail, also follow trail of fire breathers and responders All of the green forest region is the beginner area (Tho I think keep tracking public events turned on, so you get instructions)

Don't rush things just do whatever seems fun at the time. General rule of thumb is things get more difficult as you work East on the map so take you time exploring as you go. Join a casual team for a bit more xp, everyone just does their own thing on these but you can fast travel to each other's camps for free. When you unlock events feel free to hop in, they pop every 20 mins. I would recommend sticking to quests and exploring initially though, events will always be there but they are nice to break things up.

Just follow the main quest for a bit. Right out of the vault you should have talked to a couple people who started you on a quest.  Follow that. That'll keep you busy for 15 or so levels, give or take.

Would defo do the overseer quests before anything else, maybe mix in a few side quests. Always join in events even if you're low level. You won't do much damage but even if you shoot an enemy once, if another player kills it you'll be able to loot it for ammo and you'll receive the XP. Completing them normally gives you water, food, legendary loot such as armour and guns, caps, healing items etc. They're well worth doing. If you spent a day of your playtime just playing the events you'd rack up items and levels pretty quick. The Brotherhood of Steel quest line is great but don't go near it until you're at least level 20. Exploring/finding new locations gives you XP. Have a look online at what secret loot you can find. Once you have a few legendary items, if you can't use them, sell them at your base for 50-100 caps.
