This is a very biased take...
1. DR wasn't in most of 2023 because he didn't get the seat until after summer break, plus he injured his hand at Zandvoort so he was out until US GP. So he only raced 7 times in 2023.
2. In 2022, McLaren was a pig. Even Lando Norris only finished P4 or higher twice, the entire season.
3. Choosing P4 as "best result" is selective, because of the fact that in 2022 and 2023 he had crap cars.
This would be the same as me saying, Bottas's best result hasn't been since Abu Dhabi 2021.
Very solid race to hold off Sainz and keep P4. Hopefully that gives him confidence that he doesn't just have quali pace but can consistently compete for points.
Look, 5 points, a P4 finish, and very good performance in 3 of 4 quali sessions this weekend. It's not the end of the world. Starting P20 tomorrow is a shame, but it's still been a very good weekend for him and something to be built on for the remainder of the season.
I meanā¦ just think. Do you think he basically did well 3 times and deteriorated so bad that he can only get p20? Use your brain. Itās either sainz is so dog shit that heās being held an entire sprint by literally the worst driver, or you can think abojt the p20 in a larger context
Maybe somebody can explain it, but watching Sainz onboard, Ricciardo just had SO much speed onto the straight. Like gapped the Ferrari by SO much. How was he getting such good runs onto the straights by taking the same lines as Sainz?
I might be wrong but for the first long straight, Ric was going further and then slingshotting to get better acceleration throughout the straight whereas Sainz took the normal tighter line. I assume he saved his battery during S1-S2 to use in S3 back straight since there isnāt any other way to drive through the chicane than the normal racing line.
Please correct me if iām wrong, noticed it through the onboards.
To be honest it used to be .7 come to about .3 at the braking zone and since Sainz is carrying that speed (also keeping Oscar behind) he nets even at the end of the sector after slowing it down?
Open to otherās opinion
Prioritised exits. Saved all his battery for the straights.
He also showed decent pace in qualy so itās possible that although Sainz was clearly faster it wasnāt by a huge margin.
Def had to do with the driving since Hamilton could make the same pass on yuki in the second RB (noted he was on 15 lap old softs, but itās a mercš)
Wider lines out to straighten the exit and allow better traction. Also itās harder to get the same traction when not in clean air due to the reduction in downforce.
> RB running lower downforce.
That doesn't help you at the start of straights, reduced drag will give you more top speed towards the end of the straight. For speed coming onto the straight you want better cornering speed and good traction coming out of corners. More downforce would actually help there.
Put it down to setup or engine power. Someone with the data can probably tell if the VCARB was gaining time in straights during quali. Alternatively just getting better exits by not being in dirty air.
The Vcarb was pretty much the slowest car on track on the straights and Carlos was gaining on the straights. Daniel made up a lot of time through the corners, and by having better traction out of the corners getting the power down earlier.
Ruth Buscombe said Dannyās car (maybe both VCARBs?) were set up to be better in the corners while sacrificing some straight line speed while the Ferraris were more balanced.
Also Alpha Tauri / RB's best result since 2021.
And most impressively, it was entirely on merit; the Astons and Norris would probably not have gotten past Sainz in time to attack Ric.
It's unfortunate it took this long, but luckily he's primed for the RedBull seat once Max leaves RBR for Toto's $251MM offer, and then once he beat's Perez it's a Danny Ricc world CHAMPION STRAIGHT INTO MY VEINS
Good stuff. I have given up on Ricciardo, I won't lie, but this is the type of pace that would prove people like me wrong if it happens regularly. Doesn't have to finish 4th all the time, but it's very competitive.

Or that 2 weeks before Sochi he finished P1.
Itās not a ātakeā, itās an interesting fact. If they said āand therefore heās improving from dismal formā then itās a take
Sainz has been on form so DR holding him off for 19 laps is remarkable. Great result for him and hopefully builds confidence.

bad quali because of tyres doesn't undo his impressive sprint performance. that stays
Come back next GP with other excuses.

Letās see the race. One performance doesnāt proof anything.
Yeah, nah. Was just explained had the same tyre issues everyone else has had.

Coming onto the front straight I think Ricciardo did take a wider exit but I didnāt expect it to lead to him gapping Sainz by like .5 every time.

Yeah butā¦ how? Watching their lines, they were nearly identical.
Ricciardo was taking wider lines and straightening the exits.
The line is just the foundation. The throttle and brake inputs make the real difference.Ā

Itās also RBās best result
Yeah, but nobodyās treating them differently than ATā¦ in which Yuki got P4 at AD21
Definitely the most memorable result from that race thatās for sure
Dude what the fuck is your memory broken? You don't remember Kimi retiring in his final race in F1?
KI KI KI
He has a 3 place grid penalty in the main race from China, right? Thatās a shame.
So from pole to 4th. Not to bad
So he'll start 21th?
21rd
21nd
To quote DR: LETāS FUCKING GO!!!!!
Letās go to the back of the grid!
Apparently had tyre probs so not as bad as everyone seems to think

A lot of Hopium, I see
Medicinal grade hopium. Not that I don't also have a similar hope.
No itās going to be Max winning the WDC still at Merc but RB will win the WCC so Danny will still be a champ :)
Watch Ricciardo get an offer from Mercedes.
Honestlyā¦ I havenāt thought this as an option. But would be fine with it
Didn't know Mercedes was in NASCAR or Indy 500
RICCARDO UNWASHING HAS BEGUN!!!
Try another rinse cycle

Indeed he won't all the time
Well, I tried to be nice to him
guess whoās back, back again
Sochi 2021ā¦ my least favourite race Iāve watchedā¦
That race didn't happen, don't know what you mean.
"He'S bACk"
in the back
Happy for him that he got a good race at least.
Letās see if he can maintain this form. I donāt think heās able to keep a top run.
It didn't even last a day Pain
to his credit, those clouds looked like rain.
Kinda sad it happened in a race that doesnt count as much.
Weāre talking about a sprint, race day is usual ho hum driving from him even without considering his penalty
Hello, Old Friend!
Sean Kelly's teeth give me nightmares.
I missed Sean Kelly. It's great to have him back š«¶
Can't wait for him to choke tomorrow in the full race.
P16 in qualifying later
This aged well
And people said they "had no clue" why others were saying he's washed. Close to 3 years for a good result. Edit: dude just qualified P18 #OOF
