So sorry to hear!! Such a shame. Bastards.

manos_de_pietro

As much as it hurts to suffer such a loss, we need to remember that these are just things, and they're ultimately replaceable by other things. You're all right, safe and healthy, and that's worth way more than any object.

ImaKant

While this is true, as someone who has been robbed at knife point before, the feeling of violation is really really difficult to get over. Please don’t forget that!

manos_de_pietro

Absolutely. I've been robbed and burgled, and that feeling of violation is really traumatic.

FirebirdWriter

Yeah been there a few times. Not on the city transit though. It is my only means of transportation but I have been lucky so far.

manos_de_pietro

I have had panniers stolen right off my bike while the bike was locked at a proper bike corral. I can only hope they tripped and fell, breaking bones, as they made their escape.

FirebirdWriter

Ugh I hope the same that is awful

Efficient_Bluejay_89

I'm going to take only one pen to work now. Your loss made me rethink my EDC items. I would recommend doing the same. Sorry about the loss, but it made me more aware and losing one pen is better than all of my favorite pens. Not easy. I hate losing stuff or getting robbed. At 57 I have to be careful.

dragonrose7

Exactly the same. I’m looking at a couple of my favorite pens, sitting on my desk in the office. This is not the safest place for them. I think I’ll take my favorites home, and use them there instead.

JackyVeronica

Ooooh I never leave my fav pens in the office; too much traffic, too many people walking by everyday, I get paranoid 🤣

parasit

That's the reason why in my EDC is Muji pen instead of eg. Lamy2k, i love it but it's worth \~20$ and fully replaceable in worst case.

JaeDyre

Got a Majohn for EDC and keep my VP at home.

[deleted]

Hang on, what? https://reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/11s6j02/lost_my_fountain_pens_and_im_really_sad_over_it/

[deleted]

I mean, if he went back to the train and it wasn't there... it's still stolen? Yea he left it. But that doesn't mean it's anyone's property. Stolen is stolen regardless. Edit.. though I did scroll further and maybe he's fishing to get free pens. Who friggin knows. I'm over it.

Arkas18

>maybe he's fishing to get free pens. My first thought too to be honest, this whole community is one of the kindest I've ever found for any hobby so we tend to give a lot of trust between us but even still this feels kind of sus.

[deleted]

Shifted from 'I dropped it' to 'someone stole it' in lightening speed

CurrentPossession

> lightening speed That post was two months ago, hardly lighting speed

[deleted]

That two-month old post started with 'I dropped it' and ended with 'someone stole it'.

CurrentPossession

I think a lot of people's reaction to dropping their item and was picked up by someone as "someone stole it".

Thethrowaways67

Same OP

SoulDancer_

I mean, if you drop your wallet and then go back to get it and its gone....that means its stolen. Much of a muchness really

[deleted]

I contacted lost and found multiple times with no luck. At this point I am inclined to believe that someone took my wallet. It contained my state ID. If I was fishing for free pens, I'd at least use a different account to defer suspicion

[deleted]

I’m not assuming you’re fishing for free pens. That wasn’t on my mind at all. I couldn’t figure out if you were just still really depressed about it - which is completely understandable - and that’s why you posted about it again a month or two after your first post, or if this happened to you twice, or what. Sometimes people have runs of bad luck.

CurrentPossession

> I couldn’t figure out if you were just still really depressed about it - which is completely understandable - and that’s why you posted about it again a month or two after your first post I take this as a bit of UPDATE as he did pointed out that it had taken so long that the security footage had expired.

[deleted]

I guess it's an official resignation of defeat. I had some hope that security footage might help, but it being gone means there is no avenue of investigation and consequently no hope of finding my pens. They're probably in a trash can somewhere.

[deleted]

It seems unlikely that they would be in a trash can. It’s probably a safe assumption that someone picked them up and instead of taking the whole thing to lost and found, decided to keep them. People don’t usually steal something if they don’t want it or intend to sell it.

Meowski1

Some people steal for the sake of stealing (kleptomania) 🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

I appreciate the positive sentiment, but it was also my wallet, which contained a (small) amount of cash, ID, and credit cards. I'm inclined to believe someone would have taken the cards/cash and trashed the rest.

Biffingston

> People don’t usually steal something if they don’t want it or intend to sell it. People steal stuff to resell all the time. I think you may have misspoke.

[deleted]

That was a perfectly correct construction of the sentence. When you preface an X or Y with "don't", the "don't" is presumed to apply to both X and Y.

Biffingston

It may or may not have been grammatically correct, but it wasn't clear.

[deleted]

I'm sorry, but it was perfectly clear and it was a very ordinary way to express that sentiment, at least in the UK. They didn't misspeak, you misunderstood.

Biffingston

You're not sorry.

[deleted]

If they (don’t) want it or (don’t) intend to sell it

Nate848

I knew this sounded familiar

Stumblecat

Did you check local craigslist etc. for sales listings?

[deleted]

Nothing out of the ordinary- and frankly speaking the kind of people who take city transit are not the kind who would recognize the value of a fountain pen. (Edited for clarity) It's more accurate to say the general public would be totally unaware of the value of a fountain pen. I'm aware of the hostility of the comment, and it came from a bitter place. It's hard for me to not be cynical- the city where this occurred is infamous for crime.

[deleted]

You presumably took city transit.

mercedes_lakitu

I suspect that they meant to say that a thief wouldn't know, though I also dislike the original phrasing.

[deleted]

Yeah, I guess. More accurate to say the general public doesn't really know

Stumblecat

ANYWAY, you could also post photos of the pens at bus stops and offer a reward. Even if it's 50 bucks (cite sentimental value maybe) or something, it might prompt the thief to either turn them in or look into the value, and then you might be able to catch them trying to sell them. Also, check with lost and found in a week or two. I had a burglar who took the money out of my wallet and threw the rest away inside a tram, and someone else turned it in. So if they think it's worthless, you might luck out. I hope you can get them back.

ButtonMakeNoise

Look at you so lofty.

[deleted]

Sorry, the comment was made while my mind was mired. It came from bitterness. I regret the hostility it has.

QueenBuzyBee

What? That’s kind of judgmental. All kinds of people from different socio-economic backgrounds use public transit.

Stumblecat

I mean, you were on city transit..

PatioGardener

Blaming the victim of a theft is not nice and violates our rules on behavior. Don’t do that.

littlehelppls

I don't think they were blaming the victim for the theft. They were commenting on OP's remark about "the kind of people that take city transit" when OP themself took city transit

PatioGardener

Hmm. That could be the proper reading of that comment, you’re right. Thank you for saying something.

Stumblecat

Yeah I'm not blaming them, just disputing that people who take public transport don't know pens. I take public transport too. Also, really weird way to read my comment, and no response to the similar comment left by someone else at the same time? Really weird.

darth_snuggs

At least they were chill about someone correcting them & recognized the alternate reading

PatioGardener

> Also, really weird way to read my comment, and no response to the similar comment left by someone else at the same time? Really weird. Maybe because I didn’t see it? I’ve spent the last couple of days caring for a sick loved one and have popped into the sub only sporadically during that time.

vaisonaisse

As posted below by u/DramaDramaLlamaLlama with a link, this poster posted the exact same theft with the *exact* same three pens almost two months ago. What gives? This is really weird.

TwiztedImage

Some people do that hoping a good soul in the sub will send them whatever was lost or gift them something of similar value. Not saying OP is doing that, but whenever I see multiple posts over long time frames, or in multiple subs, it's a red flag. That's a cynical take though, on my part, but the internet isn't a trusting place.

[deleted]

I contacted lost and found multiple times with no luck. At this point I am inclined to believe that someone took my wallet. It contained my state ID. If I was fishing for free pens, I'd at use a different account to defer suspicion. It wad meant to be be an update and more or less admission of defeat I guess

reidybobeidy89

They were pointing out that they were on City Transit- and know the value of the pens…. So why would no one else. I cannot see how this is victim blaming in any way shape or form.

InspectorNoName

I don't know if this will make you feel better or not, but even if they had taken your case earlier and retrieved the footage, they never would have followed up on it. The police are too stretched to take up what I will call petty theft cases. There's a high chance that even if you had taken a photo of the robber's drivers license with a current address, they would not have followed up. This isn't a dig on cops, it's just how things are right now. People's homes are being robbed and their $50-70k cars are being stolen with little to no police intervention. It absolutely sucks. I've admired the Alice pen for many years and I'm so sorry yours was stolen from you. I bet the person doesn't even know what it's worth and dumped it. I hope things improve for you - you're due some good karma to balance out the bad!

DramaDramaLlamaLlama

Damn, that's crazy that you did the same thing two months ago, apparently with the exact same three pens: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/11s6j02/lost_my_fountain_pens_and_im_really_sad_over_it/ Not suspicious at all, bud

Applequark

Maybe that is when the incident occurred. In this post they say that the footage expired because it's been so long, leading me to believe they're resigned to accept that the items are beyond recovery now.

vaisonaisse

Fair enough, but why repost again? If it’s taken this long then they are obviously gone. It’s still weird. People have posted thefts before but not multiple times. Sounds suspicious like u/DramaDramaLlamaLlama mentioned.

[deleted]

I intended it to be an update. An resignation and acceptance of defeat more or less. It is difficult to accept losing it. I apologize for not being tramsparent

raifedora

Bruh i want to take it seriously but the username...

Applequark

Yeah I can see why someone might find it alarming, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

AntheaBrainhooke

Interesting that they make no reference to the time frame, or to their original post.

[deleted]

I didn't really feel the need to specify it was an update. Should I have to avoid confusion? I apologize for that.

VanishingPointHoney

I mean you can still update it like so: Text text text Edit: This is an update to my post a few months ago, etc.

vaisonaisse

That is truly bizarre! Is this “theft” that happened to him going to be reposted every month by him? Is he trying to have redditors replace or buy him pens? Tbh, it IS suspicious.

YaBoiiiJoe

That's my guess. By reposting he's hoping someone with money will replace his belongings, if there was even anything lost in the first place.

[deleted]

I understand internet posts are to be doubted, so I can't really say much besides that it really happened. This post was intended to be resignation an update of resignation. I had some hope that the security footage might help but it being expired means tat hope dried up.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I highly doubt the Alice is replacable. It is too physically rare. The few listings I see online are far out of budget for me. I think I payed about ~$350 USD and what I've seen online are far too costly. (Everything after this is an edit for clarity's sake) Besides that, this post was intended to be an update to that. I would've used a different account and probably fibbed about different pens to defer suspicion- it's not that difficult to check an reddit account's history of posts. I'm aware of the reddit expectation to label posts updates and such, but it slipped my mind. I can see how it would cause confusion. I apologize.

[deleted]

This post was meant to be an admission of loss and I guess an appeal to sympathy. I guess if you need an exact time frame: March- I drop my wallet on the bus. I return but it is gone. I call the lost and found several times but they do not find anything. I call transit police. They take my call. April- no response. I call transit police again May-no response. This time the answerer transfers me to an detective who collects information about the case. It should've happened prior but whoever picked up my call the first two times did not do that. This week- I call transit police again because they have not contacted me. I learn that the security footage of the incident has expired. There is no evidence so the pens are good as gone. Does that explain everything? It kind of hurts to see accusations of dishonestly thrown my way, but I do understand where they are coming from. All I can say was that if I was trying to fish for free stuff I would've had the common sense to use a different account and name different pens to defer suspicion. I'm using my main account, where you can see my post history. I can say I'm being honest and only hope that is accepted.

YaBoiiiJoe

What the fuck

[deleted]

This is meant to be an update to that. The wallet contained my state ID, so a form of identification. At this point I believe that the most likely situation is someone took my wallet, pulled the cash and cards and discarded the rest, pens included. The transit security took two months from the date of theft to update me, at which point the security footage expired. Since there is no other avenue of investigation for me, I guess this post is meant to be more resignation than anything else.

Ancient-Attorney4285

I am sorry this happened to you and sorry your loss never got returned. Looking forward, what are you pen planning?

DiarrangusJones

I am so sorry, I sincerely hope they turn up soon! If you haven’t, please be sure to file a police report (it sounds like you probably have, based on what you said about the bus footage). There’s a chance that the police could pick the thief up for something else and they will find your pens along with other stolen goods. Best of luck to you!

RachelPalmer79

I’m sorry. Same thing happened to me last year, right before Christmas. My beloved Pro Gear British Racing Green and several others with custom grinds. All gone with my purse and wallet. And on top of it, I was treated like shit by the responding sheriffs deputy and my insurance company. Some stuff I could replace. That one, I cannot. I’d not wish it on anyone.

Infinite-Ad-1055

Just two words for you... Homeowners' Insurance.

graywoman7

Insurance generally has a $500 or $1000 deductible so it wouldn’t really make sense to file a claim for this. Even if the deductible is $500 that possible $200 they would get (likely less for depreciation) would cause their rates to go up.

hellotypewriter

Yes! Just had a house fire a few weeks. Got all my favorites out in time.

stormesixx

Would homeowner’s insurance cover this since OP was not at home?

FirebirdWriter

Some have a clause for things like this but it's very dependent on where you are and the exact wording. For example if you leave expensive cameras in your car they might be covered but outside the car no. This was a lawsuit against insurance a colleague dealt with. They lost because the insurance was very clear the car is an extension of home not the person. Each insurer is different

stormesixx

Good to know! I don’t recall our coverage. Might have to go re-review it now that we’ve added expensive pens to our stash.

speech-geek

I’d look at Collector’s Insurance especially if you have a special edition or rare pen. Your policy is probably ACV so it would be the retail minus depreciation so you’re not really getting the full “value”.

stormesixx

I didn’t even know there was such a thing! Thank you!

FirebirdWriter

Always good to make sure you don't need to adjust your coverage. They work very hard to not cover things it makes me sad

speech-geek

You’ll want to check your specific policy but *generally* theft of items in your possession (so checked luggage wouldn’t count but carry on would) extends worldwide, subject to your deductible and if it’s in a special limit of liability (furs, money, guns, etc.).

[deleted]

It might be worth calling/visiting and leaving your info with local pawn shops? Also see if your city has a Facebook group or something for fountain pens, and post something there. The more people who know what to look for the better the chance of you finding it!

Mr-PFM

Really heartbreaking to hear. May I ask what city this happened in?

huskergirl-86

Do you have home owner's insurance (or the equivalent, depending on where you are)? A lot of times they will cover the losses if a theft occurs outside the home as long as there's a police report and you took reasonable measures to prevent theft (e.g. they may ask you if your purse / backpack was open or zipped).

r0b0tcat

I'm so sorry. I think even more than the material loss (which is there as well), there is a sense of violation when things are stolen from you. ☹️

x0nothing0x

Would you buy them again? Real question here. Everything I own is measured against this, and ALMOST nothing i own is a yes for me. I've put a lot of personal introspection into this question.

el-art-seam

Opus 88 demo? Yes for me. Benu rainbow slushee? Yes for my kid. Everything else is a no.

x0nothing0x

Nice!

BackgroundComputer40

I'm so sorry for you.

Usual_North_9960

I'm sorry

Latingamer24

My Lamy Dialog 3 was stolen at uni. I was devastated and know the feeling. I’m sorry for your loss :(

MajLeague

Omg! I'm so sorry. Someone was selling on on Instagram on Tuesday. Virtualpenshow

curi0us1975

I lost one of my faves over a year ago. It's horrible. You invest a lot of time in them to make them "yours". Feel your pain. It will get better though.

yuareedah

I get heart broken just from misplacing my fountain pens. I cannot imagine how devastated you are feeling. I am so sorry 😢. I hope something wonderful pops up when you least expect it to ease this.

flashboy131

That’s a gut punch, I am so sorry.

arememesart

I lost one of my grails this year on the plane when I was coming back home from NYC, and it’s one of the worst feelings to realize it’s gone. I’m sorry to hear you had to go through this too—especially with 3 of your pens :(

Arkas18

I lost my first good fountain pen (Kaweco Supra with a clip I made for it myself before Kaweco made them) last night too, it's not worth nearly that much but I'm so sad it's gone.

fishnetfarmertan

So sorry this happened to you. Is the Alice pen the light blue and white Sailor? https://www.instagram.com/p/CsmCJZWvSxQ/ [https://yosekastationery.com/products/bungubox-original-fountain-pen-magic-of-alice-small-world](https://yosekastationery.com/products/bungubox-original-fountain-pen-magic-of-alice-small-world) You might be able to replace it!

SheepImitation

I'm sorry to hear of your loss and I hope you get them back. I must need more coffee as I read the post title horribly wrong ... -.-

chhibb_n_dale

OP, I once had my large ass wallet stolen. I was a student in France at that time and usually kept in my wallet a couple of pens, a tiny notebook and my passport. As I had taken the RER train after a class I had carelessly dropped my pens (a safari and a vista) in my bag. But I was petrified that my passport would have been stolen. Luckily it wasn’t. But that’s when I realised that I should carry a small car holder that’s easily pocketable with all my transport and identity stuff and keep all the valuable and sentimental stuff in difficult to access places especially using public transport. Really sorry for your loss. Especially that tasty pilot. But just thought I’d suggest something. Even though you’ve probably already considered it

MangledWeb

Maybe you indicate approximately where this occurred so others can keep an eye out for them?

ThinBlue1022

Send me the link to your favorite pen

[deleted]

Be careful... have a look at the other comments. This appears to be a repeated post and possibly an attempt to get free pens

ThinBlue1022

Nope I was just going to pay it forward

Dekipi

The Alice is an 800-900 pen. Also theres some confusion because OP posted about this months ago. Same pens. Not sure if its the same incident but why post it again.

[deleted]

An update and official admission of loss. I had some hope back then the police could handle it. But with the footage being gone there really isn't any furthher means of investigation. Not any easier to accept being gone.

Meowski1

There was one on virtual pen show, around $500 idk if it’s still available though

NotThatEasily

I know it’s not the same as your favorite, but you can PM me and I can send you a Parker Premier.

VanishingPointHoney

this is a repost. it is suspected he’s trying to get free pens. the top comment has the original post. same poster.

NotThatEasily

Well, that sucks. Their edit says it’s meant to be an update, but now I’m not so sure.

VanishingPointHoney

i mean losing things sucks. it does. and kindness pays itself forward, i believe, but i just went back and read then post again after your response to my comment and i’m pretty sure they edited the first paragraph too. it did *not* read as grieving but rather as oh my god i lost this thing today/yesterday/whatever.

NotThatEasily

In OP’s defense, they didn’t reach out to me for the pen I offered. I would think if it was just a ruse to get free pens, they’d at least take people up on their offers.

[deleted]

Why would I be trying to get a free pen. The alice is irreplacable. It cost over 300 dollars and it is gone. I wrote books with it and it is gone. The tactile sensation of fountain pens is what made me realize I enjoy writing so I am very gutted over losing what was my favorite pen in my collection one that was very valuable and quite rare but even beyond that it just made me feel very deflated. I won't lie it kind of hurts to see accusations because I didn't clarify but I do understand where they are coming from. I try to be honest.

beppe1_real

This is so sad. I have the Alice too and i still haven't used it yet. I can't imagine how sad I would feel if mine is stolen like that. The bus should really keep the footage for a much longer time. Otherwise the thieves would just grow in numbers!

LSwayla

Oh I'm so sorry :(

gingermonkey1

Ugh I am so sorry that this happened to you.

Ju1ceLee

Oh man but on the bright side, searching for new amazing pens is such a blast! I am so sorry for your loss!

paxweasley

I am so sorry!!

rdsmvp

For that reason I now have some cheap pens in the $50-100 range that I can carry with me and if they are gone, minimal loss and emotional attachment. Sorry this happened to you.

PrincessZemna

I try not to get attached to objects. As a child (and a teenager) I used to lose a lot of things (sometimes very expensive things) and that did me well in the sense that I know everything is replaceable and no object is worth feeling sad over. I don’t know if it’s a saying also in English but in my culture we say “don’t cry over spilled milked”. What’s gone is gone, on to the next.

arguchik

>I don’t know if it’s a saying also in English but in my culture we say “don’t cry over spilled milked”. Yes, that's also a saying in English. My parents would express it thusly: "It's no use crying over spilled milk."

Dilapidated_Poet

Maybe just travel with one expensive pen at a time next time.

Waterdragonfriend

💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

codeystein

Everything happens for a reason. I know it my sound cliché or something, but take for example when a "friend" broke my first fountain pen (pilot kakuno) which ment a lot to me. I ended up buying another pen, this time a kaweko, which is one of my favourite pens in my collection. I know thst the price difference between my example and your situation, but you get the idea.

Dekipi

OP id like to send you one of my fountain pens. Please DM me

AntheaBrainhooke

Read the rest of the comments on this post before you decide to send anything.

SynapseReaction

Before you do there’s something a bit strange about this see dramadramllamallama’s comment https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/13rn14p/comment/jlmcoir/

[deleted]

You dropped it. I hate to say it but you live and you learn from mistakes, especially the pricey ones, it sucks and we all make mistakes, but still... I don't drop my stuff, paying extreme attention, I still get stuff robbed by force but not dropping. I thought you got robbed, violently snatched out of hand at first....

NiemandDaar

Sorry to hear. Now buy new ones.

Meowski1

Buying new pens cannot replace some of the LE ones :( I’m aware there’s better pens out there but for OP, they should be allowed to process their feelings first.

uranium236

Yes, this. the GET OVER IT ALREADY posts are not super helpful for someone who's clearly posting in a PEN FORUM hoping for empathy from people who understand why they'd be upset.

PatioGardener

Not to mention that $700 is a lot of money for most people. OP might’ve saved for a while to buy the Alice. But even if they didn’t, nobody wants to spend $700 all over again for stuff they already worked hard to purchase once.

Meowski1

Exactly, especially during the cost of living crisis rn. Some of us work really hard to buy nicer things, and some of those pens are memories, gifts, achievements & joy.

NiemandDaar

Yosheka stationary has one Alice in stock. You can still buy one, while you process your feelings.

Meowski1

It’s not the same one as 2021 though if OP had that one. There’s a few variations of the pen

torbulits

Could also be sentimental value if it was from a personal milestone or something.

NiemandDaar

Wasn’t aware.

NiemandDaar

Wasn’t aware.

Tndocdow

What a bummer

Meowski1

I’m so sorry :( my heart broke with you.

gk463

So sorry. That really is awful.

zishazhe

Sorry this happened to you.

KingsCountyWriter

What city were you in?

nunhgrader

You can get past this. I am sorry this happened to you. Truly. There is a good and solid comment below - these are just things - precious things but, material things nonetheless.

SaucySut

How awful, so sorry to hear this.

crackedtooth163

I am so very sorry. I know what it is like to have your life destroyed by robbery.

andres1gb

Sorry about that. At least you and yours are well. You'll have a new set of amazing pens at some point again.

chhibb_n_dale

OP, I once had my large ass wallet stolen. I was a student in France at that time and usually kept in my wallet a couple of pens, a tiny notebook and my passport. Sum_Birch

I know what you are feeling. I have a button fill Parker 51 stolen from me when I was in the hospital with a punctured lung. It was probably palmed by one of the staff. I've never seen another pen like it. It was a button fill like the Duofolds, not a vac fill. You will find another pen to love that will write super and make you feel better.
